Odd Startup problem, small graphic file always starts

Recently my macbook started having an interesting start up problem. Every time I boot fresh it opens a small file in Preview titled wht_tab4.gif. I can't find this file as it is hidden. I can simply close the file each time, but it is certainly odd. Any idea how to stop this behavior?

Hi,
First get EasyFind...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
You can find, move, delete hidden files.
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go.
Trash this file...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist
Move or trash that gif file with easyfind if you wish.
Check that Preview isn't in System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window.
Reboot.

  • CE Flash files always start at the beginning?

I have had an online Continuing education course designed,
which has the main contents embedded into .asp pages.
The problem is that when customers "log-out", then return and
"log in" again whithout closing thier browser, the fllash file
always starts at the beginning, rather than where my database
    indicates.
I "think" this is caused by the flashplayer plugin "keeping"
the flash file in memory, and starting the "movie" again at the
beginning? Thus if they close thier browser, deleting the flash
file from memory, and re-starting the browser again, and "logging
in" again, it functions correctly, beginning the flash file on the
correct page (which is indicated in the database)
If this IS what is happening, can this be corrected, so that
upon "Log out" the flash file will be automatically removed,
without the need to re-start the browser?

I believe this will work for you. Does for me. Go to SysPref/Speech/Text to Speech. Check box of: Speak selected text when the key is press. Set key. Open the pdf and highlight what you want to hear. Hit key you set. When it's done with it's spiel highlight more text and hit key. It auto erases previous highlight. You'll see. It's not very ideal, but it's what is dealt.

  • Indesign CS5 crash during startup - problem with Graphics.rpln

I work in an architectural company and already several of our computers have experienced this very rare and unusual behaviour. During start up of Indesign (not clicking on any file but just launching Indesign) it crashes with the following error:
"Adobe Indesign CS5 has stopped working"
We use Windows 7 64bit, so the first step I did - I went into Application Log which says, so appears to be a problem with Graphics.rpln.

I have tried everything I could think of - removed and reinstalled Adobe CS5, manually removed Adobe folders under %Appdata%\Local and %Appdata%\Remote folders (why can't Adobe delete those things during uninstallation is always a total mystery), changed video adapter drivers, cleaned Temp folders, everything I knew...
None of the other apps like Photoshop or Illustrator CS5 malfunction - only Indesign. What is going on?
Can it conflict with other software we use? We have Bentley Microstation, 3D Max, Office 2010, Kaspersky Antivirus and LOGMEIN installed on this computer...Any clues, guys?

Looks to me like you've never installed any of the patches. Last patch for CS5 was 7.0.4, so I'd start with that and see if ti helps.

I start Illustrator first time and it start's as it should. In a maximized window, but when i start a second illustrator file in a allready working programm, the file only open in minimized view. I i klick on maximize view it works, but it's one klick more to do :-)
Can someone explain me this error? Can i configure it?

What KDE version are you using ?

  • Two odd startup problems

I have two problems during startup. First, I aways get the folder with a question mark for an icon before it recognizes the startup disk. Its only for a second or two, but it still seems a little concerning.
Second, my computer always locks up when OS X starts. I have to manually powercycle and then I can operate the compy just fine.
    These are my login items:
LittleSnitchDaemon, iTunesHelper, Meteorologist, Microsoft AU Daemon, iCalAlarmScheduler, Quicksilver, witchdaemon, AdobeResourceSynchronizer, and LCCDaemon.
Thanks in advance for any input!

These problems may, of course, be related. Open System Preferences and access the Startup Disk panel. There, select the right startup for your computer (probably OS X 10.4.x on xxx computer), then the next time you restart that question mark should have disappeared.
The other problem may be related; but do you need all of those startup items?
If the problem persists, try and start up in Verbose mode (Command + V keys) and watch closely for any delays or bad reports. Once you have the data, someone may be able to advise.

  • Kernel panics, graphic file corruption with Firewire

I've been having consistent problems with Firewire since I got my Mac Pro last year. I only recently narrowed it down to Firewire so I thought I'd write it up here for the record.
I never actually solved the problem, just started using USB-2 instead and the issues went away.
--I had been getting pretty consistent kernel panics while doing backups or large file transfers to an external FW drive. I tried a few different drives and cables and the panics were consistent.
--I also noticed a strange problem where graphic files I'd backed up (TIFF, JPEG, etc.) would have these single-pixel horizontal streaks running through them. This was a little disconcerting because it wasn't picked up during verification, it was just there when I opened the backup file.
I found lots of people with FW problems in these forums but none mentioned that strange file corruption I got.
I'll try FW again after a future system software upgrade but I'm giving up on it for now.

I do not recommend reformatting your harddrive and reloading your software.  This is a Windows thing. On an older mac it may be difficult to find all your software again.
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • Problem with Struts file upload with small files

For some reason, when I try to upload a file that is smaller than 45 bytes using Struts (took me a long time to find this number), by the time the file is populated in my form bean and I read the size from it, the size is 0. Has anyone encountered this problem before?
I created a file called test.txt, which contained the following text in it: "This is a test.". This file is about 15 bytes in size. When I was trying to upload this file using Struts, and write it to a temp file, my temp file always was of size 0. At first I was convinced it was my code, but then I tried a Word file (about 19kb), and it worked fine. Finally, I added some debug code at the beginning of my execute() method in my action to print out all the metadata for uploaded files, and I saw the the file size was 0 for files smaller than 45 bytes. I printed this just after I cast the form to be the type of form that I needed. What is happening to the contents of the file? Does Struts have a minimum size limit of files that it is able to process?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

AFter some more testing, I found that this is only a problem when using Firefox and Netscape. When using IE, files as small as 1 byte were properly uploaded, and the size was accurate when queried from FormFile.getFileSize().
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be happening in this case? Why it would work fine in one browser and not the other?

    Thanks for you reply.
But actually I don't want to show the \ (backslashes) to the user in my text box.
Ok let me elaborate this problem little more.
I want to show my text box as it is in normal editors e.g. In Matlab editor. There is a text box and on left side the gray bar shows the line numbers corresponding to the text. Further more i want that the user should be able to click on any line number to mark specific line as breakpoint (red circle or any graphical indication for mark).

If I log in my Account on my mac, nodes is always starting. Nodes is not in start objects... Has anybody an idea how to fix this issue?

    See this discussion.
    Apps open after boot
If that doesn't work, try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • 9004 startup problem

    Hi all,
I have a cRIO 9004 system with various I/O modules attached. I have a RT startup app that used to
run properly but after some changes and re-programm of some components the program does
not boot anymore. The strange thing: It runs perfectly when I "deploy" it from my project
(which means I start it with the UI enabled so that I can debug the program while it runs).
However, when I build it and set it to "run as startup" and reboot, nothing happens.
I checked all possible "easy" mistakes like dip switches and config file settings, IP settings, all
    seems find.
I have LED blinking in a loop which dies not blink. There are only few things happening before the
loop is entered: Read a config file /using open g libraries) and configure RT FIFO's and queues.
Is ther something that could go wrong here (e.g. file path settings) even when the program does start
    "remotely"?
    Thanks!
    Solved!

    Hello Olaf,
First of all I just want to say that OpenG libraries are not fully recommended by National Instruments for Real time System. I think problem is related with your building EXE and set EXE as startup. Try building the EXE again and keeping your OPEN G library folder in Source file always include section.
As you mention that its working fine from your project but not working in RT startup. As you are reading the file in the RT make sure file is available in RT on same path or give constant path in RT. May be you are using the building the path function and in RT EXE its different. So for checking gives constant path.

  • A very odd OS problem

I've encountered a very odd problem with a computer at work. It's a G4 733 mhz, running os 9.1.0, and at my insistence, my boss has agreed to let me install os X, but only on an external drive. Right now this thing has all kinds of weird going on. First off, it never remembers the startup disk, it always starts up with a question mark for a minute before finding the internal os 9.1 disk. (This is an old problem, not a result of my attempt to install os x.) It starts up off the tiger disk fine, but it won't recognize the firewire disk as the start up disk. (In OS 9's startup disk control panel it will see the the folder, and it lets you select it, but it always reverts to the internal drive with OS 9 on restart. Same thing when selecting it with the startup disk options from the OS X Install Disk.) To make things weirder, holding down option on startup lets me see the CD System folder, and the OS 9 System folder, but not the firewire drive. I hooked the same drive up to my laptop, and booted up off the drive fine. I tried giving the PRAM a zap just for fun , and then it didn't see anything till I started up off the CD and told it to startup in OS 9. My mind is boggled, anyone have any idea what this is a symptem of?

    Hi, Geoff -
OS 9.1 can be used as Classic with OSX, although OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility in that mode.
However, the original OS 9.1 installs (whether from a CD or the result of a download update) have an issue - the version of Startup Disk control panel that comes with OS 9.1 and earlier can not recognize OSX as a viable Boot OS, hence will not make it available for selection. The solution for that is to update the OS to 9.2.x, or at least update just that control panel. There is a specific download available for just the control panel -
Startup Disk 9.2.1 Document and Software
There may be another problem. You stated -
I hooked the same drive up to my laptop, and booted up off the drive fine.
That would indicate that the install of the OS on the firewire drive may have been done when it was connected to the laptop. If that was the case, it may not be suitable to boot a different model, such as your G4/733.
Most OS installs are specific to the hardware of the machine whose boot OS is running the installer. There is a way to do a universal (boot any Mac) install of OS 9.x, but I don't know if there is a way to do that with OSX.
To make things weirder, holding down option on startup lets me see the CD System folder, and the OS 9 System folder, but not the firewire drive.
Booting up using Startup Manager (which is what appears when you hold down the Option key during boot) will display only those OS's valid for that particular machine, and only one OS per volume (volume = an unpartitioned drive or disk, or the partition of a partitioned drive or disk).
Sometimes Startup Manager does not 'see' all bootable volumes immediately; clicking the Rescan button (the round arrow) will make it recheck all buses for a bootable volume.
First off, it never remembers the startup disk, it always starts up with a question mark for a minute before finding the internal os 9.1 disk.
This could be indicative of a weak or dead internal battery. Since your G4/733 is running a version of OS 9.1 it must be a Digital Audio model (the G4/733 QuickSilver models originally came with OS 9.2, and can not use any version of OS 9.1); this means it is about 5 years old now, which is about all that can be expected from an internal battery even if the Mac is left connected to live power when it is shut down.
When the battery is too weak or dead the Mac will not remember PRAM settings between boots or restarts, and may have difficulty booting to some drives (particularly to external ones).
Suggest you replace that battery - you can get one at places like Radio Shack for about US$15, cheaper on-line.

  • Dual Monitor Startup Problem on MacPro - Solved

I have a model 53135LL/A = mid 2010 MacPro with 8 cores, DUAL monitor cards and monitors, 24GB memory, running Lion 10.7.3.  It is important to note that I am also using the Apple bluetooth Magic Mouse and the smaller, bluetooth keyboard (no numeric keypad).  This unit was supplied with Lion in December 2011 and has had a startup problem from the beginning as follows:
1 - when starting from a cold start the dual monitor positions are reversed from the correct position
2 - additionally the USB and firewire connected devices (e.g. Wacom tablet, 2 card readers) do not function properly.
The workaround for me has been to start the system, wait for the logon screen, then click restart. Upon restart everything comes up and functions correctly.
Specifics on my setup and starting problems:
1 - My main monitor (Monitor #2) is a large gamut monitor that is located to the right. This monitor is connected to card slot 1 as that is the faster card slot (pcx16). The second monitor (Monitor #1) is an ordinary unit and connected to card slot 2 (pcx4). The monitors are set up as an extended desktop.
    2. The Wacom tablet (Intuous 3 wide) is connected to USB port on rear of machine. CF card reader by Delkin is connected to Firewire on rear of machine, and an SD card reader is connected to USB on the rear of the machine.
    3. My dock is positioned on the left side of the left monitor. The menu bar is along the top of the left monitor, and all desktop icons are on the left monitor.  The right monitor has no items on it.
On a typical cold start, as mentioned above, the apple logo appears on the right and then the logon screen appears on the right.
If I proceed to logon at that point, all the desktop items move to the right monitor and the computer thinks the positions are reversed.  In other words, it behaves as though the right monitor (#2) is on the left of the desktop and left monitor (#1) is on the right.
Additionally, the Wacom tablet using either pen or mouse does not map over the full desktop range.  If I use either card reader and then eject the card, no further card insertions will be recognized.
To fix this, I simply restart the machine thru the apple menu and everything comes up correctly.
I had discovered, that instead of completing the logon on a bad cold start, I could simply restart from the logon screen and all would work correctly.
On occasion, the logon screen would come up on the left monitor (as it should do) and in that case, if I log on all works correctly.
I have worked with Apple support on the phone, clearing setup ram etc. Have had the unit in to Apple store for hardware check, all OK.  Next suggestion was reload OS and start over - no thanks.
SO - Here is the latest.
If I turn off my keyboard and mouse before starting the machine, then wait for the logon screen to appear - It starts correctly, with the logon screen on the left.  I can then turn on my keyboard and mouse and all works as it should.
Bottom line - there appears to be a startup issue with Bluetooth devices from a cold start.  Note that once the machine has been used for a bit, I can turn it off for short periods of time (e.g. 30 minutes) and it will start correctly even with the mouse and keyboard turned on.
