Office 2008 issue

Hi All,
I recently installed Microsoft Office 2008 in my MacBook, but the applications run pretty slow (only Office), specially PowerPoint. Any suggestions on how to improve the speed of those applications? Getting a new RAM memory perhaps? I installed a 1 GB Ram memory one year ago.
The details of my Mac are:
Machine Model: PowerBook6,5
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
CPU Speed: 1.33 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.25 GB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Thanks in advance!

ibm2: I have Office 2008 running on all the Macs in our house, and it is slow(er) than I think anyone would expect.
The Mac Mini we have runs 1GB of RAM and a Core Duo 1.83 and I see little difference in speed compared to my 2.4Ghz Blackbook w/ 4GB of RAM. My fiancee uses Office 2008 on her MB 2.16 Ghz w/ 2GB of RAM and she complains endlessly about how slow it is.
I posted some time ago on Microsoft's forums about the speed and one of the MVPs said it was because of Leopard, and it runs much faster under Tiger. I don't know if I believe that or not, but if you're curious, here's the link...

As you can see, my original issue was w/ MathType symbols (it isn't out yet for '08), and Microsoft doesn't make a descent Math equation editor for the Mac version of Office. Office 2007 has Microsoft Math which is descent enough but doesn't do series. On the other hand, I've been using Pages '08 almost exclusively for the majority of my work and couldn't be happier. It is not a perfect Word replacement, but it does about 80%-90% of what Word can do (sometimes better, or a lot better), but I still haven't broken that tie to Redmond's Office suite yet. ::baby steps::

  • "There is a problem with the Office database" - Microsoft Office 2008 issue

It was all going so well.
I upgraded a MacBook to SL over the weekend. Everything was working well until yesterday (Wednesday) when, on opening Word I got the above message. The Database Utility reports 'an error occurred while trying to verify your database'
Other issues are that Entourage will not open, with a report that "The Entourage Temp folder could not be found".
I have reinstalled SL and Office and patched Office to 12.2.0. Interestingly the 12.2.1 installer cannot find a version of Office to update.
I've followed the various threads on font issues, but nothing seems to be working. As a temporary fix, I will be re-installing 10.5 but I'd like to know that Office 2008 is stable before going through the upgrade again.

I've had a chance to play around with a few things, mostly by following the advice at http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2009/09/hottopics_using_office_for_mac_with_snowleopard.html
After creating a new user account I noticed that Office worked fine until the next time I logged out/in or rebooted. My MacBook is bound to a 10.5 server so I wondered if something was being reset by the server.
To try this out, I unbound the MacBook, set up a new account, and tested it by multiple restarts and log out/in. This configuration works fine so I guess it's something to do with being bound to an OD. Just one more thing to try if you're having problems

  • Microsoft Office 2008 issues.  Help. Excel not opening and other issues!

I converted to Lion on day one.  I was able to use Microsoft Office 2008 without problem for days, then, just today, every time I go to open an excel file it opens, closes, then gives me the option of sending error reports to Microsoft.  Word opens fine. The program is totally up to date (just did the 12.3 update).  I repaired disk permissions, restarted the computer twice.  Still, the same things happen.  Here is the message I get for the Microsoft Excell Error Report:

    OTHER ISSUES
The other thing that happens is that whether on Word or Excel when I click on a file to open it, it keeps trying to open all the recent files from that program intead of *just the ONE* that I want it to open.  I also notice on Safari that when I reopen the program it opens ALL the websites I recently visited even though I don't have that checked as a preference...  What gives??????????
Any suggestions.  I am freakingout here, really need to get into these documents.

    Hi there.
This sound awfull like an issue with the resume function in OSX Lion.
This can be adjusted in system settings under general.
    See:

    Hope this solves your problems.

  • Office 2008 Word Entourage

Has anyone since installing SL having issues with entourage and word. I am not able to run both applications without them both crashing. Also with both of them open I am not able to insert an attachment in Entourage. I have tried closing both of them and running both of them individual but w/e I do they both still crash.
Anyone have any thoughts to what I should do, is this a SL issue or is this a Office 2008 issues?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Thoroughly Bizarre Excel 2008 Issue

I am having an issue with Excel 2008 that I can not find duplicated anywhere. When I have a workbook with information on multiple tabs, and I move to another tab, Excel opens a new workbook that completely duplicates the information on that tab. The only way I have found to fix this is to quit Excel and restart it. Once restarted, it will work fine for a while, and lull me into a false sense of security. Then, I will be working away (as I am now), and I looked up at my second monitor and saw 8 new, unsaved workbooks stacked up. All duplicates of the tabs I had been navigating to.
I have rebooted. I have thrown out the file "com.microsoft.Excel.plist" from my Preferences folder in my User Library. I have verified and repaired permissions. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.4 Intel running System 10.5.7. My Excel is part of Office 2008, v 12.1.9. Please help. I am really sick of quitting Excel and restarting it!

Hi MHny and welcome to the forums. While someone here "may" be able to help you with your issue, your problem is more of an Office 2008 issue as opposed to a MacBook Pro issue. You may have better luck trying out the Office 2008 support sites:

  • MS Office 2008 Update: fixes some print issues?

I noticed the first update for Office 2008 is out, and one "fix" they list for Word is:
Blank pages are no longer printed when you print to a high resolution printer. This update fixes an issue in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that causes blank pages to print when you print to a high resolution printer.
I know people have struggled with Samsung and other printers and Word since Leopard released. I do not have one of the affected printers so cannot test it.
    The updater is here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
    Offered for your consideration.

  • Office 2008 upgrade install issues

Just installed the upgrade of Office 2008. I could not get the programs to work even though it loaded successfully. I finally called MS and they had me create a new identity on my mac and install the upgrade there. It works. My issue is how to merge the identities or merge the data from the old identity to the new identity? This is for iTunes, iPhoto, Entourage...everything.

*"My issue is how to merge the identities or merge the data from the old identity to the new identity?"*
This isn't an issue with Office and/or Windows compatibility but rather a question better suited for the OS X discussions since you'll be wanting migrate a user account.
Your best bet would be to post your question in the Account and Login section of the OS X forums:

  • About To Install Office 2008 On Leopard 10.5.2; Any Issues Or Tips?

Hello-I'm getting ready to install Office 2008 on my 24" Intel iMac, 2.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 1 500 GB drive, and FW800 external backup drive. (Not using Time Machine)
Just wondering if others have done this with no problems; anything I should watch out for?
I am getting the standard upgrade version; my previous version is Office X (about 7 years old); I currently have the Word only portion of that installed on this iMac.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Office 2008 with 10.5.2 Issues

I want to install Office 2008 but I hear there are all sorts of issues with it; font problems, security permissions etc.
Will Office 2008 mess up my perfectly stable and speedy 10.5.2 system / fonts / system files? Is there a clean way of uninstalling office 2008 if I need to?
Currently I use Office 2007 under Parallels but it is too heavy-weight to boot up windows every time I want to use Office.
Your advice will be well received.
    P

    Greetings,
I'm using Office 2008 with Leopard 10.5.2 and I don't have any issues that I know of. I use Excel and Word nearly all day. I haven't really heard of any issues, until now. I use iWork as well and haven't seen any font issues there either.
I run Parallels and I infected my Mac with Vista Enterprise and Office 2007 - it all works as advertised, for me, the Mac and the Windoze part.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Issue with Office 2008 - won't start

I've just installed Office 2008 and done updating it to 12.1.2. I'm using a MacBook with Leopard 10.5.4 running.
But everytime I open anyone of the Office 2008 applications, the Get Started app pops up and Autoupdate follows. After Autoupdate finishes checking (no updates found), it just stays there.
The Application I selected be it Word, Exel or Powerpoint, won't open. What's wrong?

Since Office is not an Apple product, you should consider posting your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as they would be more focused on the issue than an Apple forum that deals with installation issues of OS X:

  • Issue with new Office 2008 and Leopard

I recently installed Office for Mac 2008 on a new MacBook Pro. Once it was installed, when I launched the program (like Excel or Word) on the application launching screen (where it comes up showing which program you opened and the product key and the name of the registered user) it showed my full administrator password for the MacBook. Then when I went to look at the document properties for the application, under 'company name' is showed my adminstrator password. Not necessarily good when you send files to clients, friends, etc.
I uninstalled Office 2008, changed my admin password, then reinstalled Office. Same thing happened, except it was still my old original MacBook admin password. Obviously, it did not uninstall the entire program.
Does anyone know how I can correct this so it will not show my MacBook admin password everytime I launch one of the Office applications?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
I recently installed Office 2008 on a Leopard Macbook, and don't have these issues. The launch screen shows my name and the registration code only, and the document properties show only my name.
All I can suggest is you go to MicroSoft's Mactopia pages, and access their forums from there.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Licensing Issue

I just got the Home & Student version of Office 2008 that gives you three licenses. If you already have it on three computers do you need to deactivate online if you want to put it on another 3rd computer like with Adobe Photoshop? or can you put it on a fourth computer without problem. I have 4 computers...

Thanks, got my question answered there:
"...Student Teacher includes 3 licenses, not 3 loads - you can load as many times as you want. MacOffice (unlike WinOffice), doesn't require activation, or any other
contact with MS - it uses a local mechanism for license verification."

  • ? about Office 2008...didn't know where else to get help

Microsoft was absolutely no help with this issue I have been dealing with.
I have Office 2008 and was having difficulty with it freezing up, etc. I ran the autoupdate program from Word and it says that I need to install Autoupdate 2.1.1. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to install it! I have downloaded it from their website and also from Word and it is as if I have never installed it. In the meantime, I can't install any of the regular Office 12.1.xxxx updates. Are the two tied together? How can I fix this? Thanks for your help!!!
Why do I keep going back to MS???

    Sadly they rarely are.
Have you considered switching to a real Office Suite like OpenOffice or NeoOffice, either of which are at least 99.99% MSOffice compatible, are free and never have any problems.
I have Office 2008 and was having difficulty with it freezing up, etc.
    Yes, that's MSOffice alright.
Why do I keep going back to MS???
I don't know. As I noted, there are far superior options available.

  • MS office 2008 now crashing when we try to print. No changes to computer; same old software. New printer 9 months ago, no trouble printing until last month. Other programs (adobe, mac) print fine. What can I try?

I have an iMac from 2009. It's running OSX 10.6.8 and we've used MS Office 2008 for Mac all along without any trouble.  We replaced our printer 8 or 9 months ago, and we've had no trouble printing from any program until the last several weeks. Now, when we try to print ONLY from word or excel, the print window appears, but then the spinning rainbow comes up, followed by a Microsoft crash message: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried to trick it into making a PDF, but the crash comes too fast. The only change to our entire Mac ecosystem is the following: We also have a Macbook Pro that has the 2nd allowed installation of the same MS Office 2008 for Mac. Due to liquid damage 6 weeks ago, that computer was replaced and all of the data and applications were moved from the dead one to the new one. Could this possibly be because microsoft detects a "third" computer "using" its software? I'm guessing no because I've seen several threads about problems similar to mine, and none mention licensing issues. In terms of troubleshooting, I've shut down, unplugged, restarted and tried newly created docs as well as old ones. Same results, no matter what.

  • Office 2008 for Mac: Any advice on where to get it cheaper for a student?

I am about to go into my Master's Degree at Dallas Theological Seminary and I need to get Office 2008 for Mac. The Apple store recommended me get it at my school but my school's bookstore does not have it and journeyed.com doesn't support DTS. Does anyone know how or where I can get this program for less than $100 with a student discount? I really need to know.

    Remember... Google is your friend.

Also, be aware that this is a forum for troubleshooting compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows, and that Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products are the best place to post Office related questions. Good luck...
