Office opens hyperlinks first in IE, then in default browser

Hello!
If you have some links saved, for example, in Excel, when you try to follow it, Office first sends the GET-request with IE User-Agent and user's cookies from IE , and only then default browser opens it and sends the same request.
You can check it with some app, like Fiddler.
It causes rare but unpleasant  effects while working with links in Excel.
Could someone explain the sense of this first request with IE User-Agent?
Tank you, guys!

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
When you click a hyperlink in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel in your case), just like what you have detected, it actually runs Microsoft Office Protocol Discovery first to determine if the URL works.
The Office library will make an HTTP HEAD request to the web server for the opening URL. This request is sent with a Windows/Internet Explorer component (it was identified as User Agent Microsoft Office Existence Discovery).
The purpose of the HEAD request is to check that the content exists at the URL location as a document, and not simply as a tempoary resource streamed down for a read-only session.

  • I can open Safari, Finder and Google Chrome ( my default browser) but they do not display on my iMac.  Evidently they are minimized somewhere but I can't figure out how to maximize them.  This has been a problem ever since I down loaded Mavericks.

When I open Safari, Finder or Google Chrome (my default browser) they do not displayanywhere on my iMac.
Tthey are minimized somewhere but  how can to maximize them.
I can't say for sure this is related to Mavericks but the problem began shortly after dowloading Mavs.
    Any suggested fix?

Hope the following helps to make things clearer.
When I left click Safari or Google Chrome in my Dock, neither expands.  When I then right click wither one in teh Dock, a dialog box pops up  which gives me the option to close them, which implies that they are in fact open.
In other words, when I left click on Safari or Chrome in my Dock, nothing visibly changes on my Desktop.  Indeed, neither Safari not Chrome are listed as the active window in the menu bar.  If I do the same with Finder, at least Finder shows up as active in the menu bar but that's all.  Finder itsef is not accessible and so I cannot  use it.
On the other hand, I ahve no problem opening up Paralles 9 for Mac to access Windows/Explorer which is what I have done to send this note to teh Apple Communities Forum.  Nor do I ahve a problem opening up any of my other programssuch as Office for Mac, etc.
I suspect this may be mavericks related but can't say for sure.
Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

  • 3.6.13 OS MAC 10.6.6 - cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

new iMac (March '10) - no problem til last week - as above - when
Firefox is my default browser cannot open url's form within Mail.
OK when I change over to Safari - but going back to Firefox same issue.
Firefox browser opens but the page does not load....
    any suggestions?

I have the same issue. One interesting piece of info is if you quit FireFox (go to dock > right click on firefox icon > quit) Mail will then launch the link into FireFox properly. Somehow though users actions must cause it to fail again. My wife uses our iMac more than I do for email, so I haven't been able to re-create what she is doing to lose the Mail > Firefox functionality. Almost sounds like an OS X bug??

  • Cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

just started happening - Safari as default browser does work - but changing back to Firefox as my default - browser opens but doesn't open page.
    any ideas would be appreciated

Works here, but you should quit Mail before changing in the Safari Preferences, and then relaunch Mail so it will pick up the change.

  • Why won't Links open from e-mail if Firefox is default browser

I still have this problem and now it is starting to affect the browsers functionality and useability. When Firefox is my default browser any link outside of Firefox (like in my e-mail) won't open which is becoming a nuisance. I am running Windows 7 which may be the cause of the problem via a setting but I can't locate the needle in the haystack or it may have happened at a Firefox update. Firefox has been my favorite and only browser since Netscape 1.0 but if I can't resolve this problem I will have to switch to another which I really don't want to do. Help!!!

Thanks for your solution jsher. After updating firefox my links stopped working. I checked all settings and associations but nothing fixed the problem. I had to go into Firefox, options, advanced, and use "check now" that firefox is the default browser. Fixed problem and I can carry on using firefox.

  • I'm using outlook email, Firefox 11 and Windows 7 Home but email links do not open Firefox even though it's my default browser, Fix?

My email links fail to open Firefox 11. They used to last week but IE updated and now links in my outlook emails do not open Firefox 11 even though it's my default browser. When I change to IE as the default the links open IE.
Your assumptions about my browser, operating system and others are correct.
    VERY FRUSTRATING. HELP, Please

    Hi,
Please also try this: Windows Control Panel > '''Default Programs''' > '''Associate a file type or protocol with a program''' > look for '''.url''' > '''Change program''' to Firefox.
edit: You have to restart Outlook or sometimes reboot the system for the change to take effect. Thanks AUnderhill.

In flex panels - if you'd

the page would open up in the user's default browser.
How to do this in an html panel?
    When I try

a custom window opens and I'm not even sure where it comes from,

  • Firefox not default browser when browser not open

I know how to set a default browser settings in Safari, but here's the problem. I have Firefox/Mozilla and unless I am using it and have it open, my computer uses Safari as my default browser. When I open Safari (with no Firefox pages open) and go to the applications list to choose default browser, Mozilla/Firefox is not listed anywhere. I notice when I do open Firefox browser, it opens up like another drive, not in the applications list, but in the drive list where it shows Mac HD etc, creating it's own finder folder and everything, not like an internal application. I think this is why Safari is still set as default browser if I haven't opened Firefox. Once I open Firefox, then open Safari, I can select Firefox, it shows it in the drives window, not applications. So the problem is, if I have not opened Firefox and I click on a link in an email, Safari opens up and not Firefox. Is there a way to get Firefox recognized as an application and pull up in the applications list without it being open?
    Thankyou.

You have not installed Firefox. You are running the application directly from the disk image you downloaded.
Double-click on the .dmg file that contains Firefox. The disk image will mount on the Desktop. A Finder window will open automatically, drag the Firefox icon from the window to your Applications folder. Eject the mounted disk image and delete the .dmg file (or archive it somewhere.)

  • When I create a shortcut to a web page from FireFox to the desktop, how can I force Firefox to open from it when I.E. is default and has to stay that way?

I have a customer that likes to use Firefox browser and does for all they can. Unfortunately they have to also us I.E. with some of their business companies so their browser is set to I.E. by default and must stay that way. Tried changing default for brevity we will just say opened to many other problems. SO, is there a way to create a short cut to the desktop from Firefox and force that shortcut to open with Firefox and not with the default browser IE?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hello,
You can create a new Firefox shortcut on the desktop and add the website address after Firefox. For example:
Under the shortcut tab, the target could read:
    * "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" "www.google.ca"

  • Windows 7 and Microsoft Office installed a series of updates and now I cannot open hyperlinks in emails.

After my system rebooted and I opened my emails in outlook, when I clicked on a hyperlink, it brought me no where. I did not get an error message. I went back in and set Firefox to my default program with all extensions and protocols for Firefox. However, when I click a hyperlink in an email, it still does not open in Firefox. What little trick has IE and Microsoft done now to change my system. Until I updated some files today, hyperlinks in emails opened in Firefox. Please Help. I hate IE!

Windows does not know that it should start Firefox to open those links.
Try this first. Start IE (yes I know) and set it as the default browser. After
close IE. Wait a few moments, then start Firefox. Then set FF as your default.

  • Can I stop ipad from flipping to Safari every time I click a link in an email? I like to open everything first and then go through my Safari tabs.

is there anyway I can stop my ipad from flipping to Safari every time I click on a link in an email. I would like to be able to go through all my email and then go to Safari and go through the tabs that have been opened. Currently I click an email, Safari opens, I go back to mail, delete said email, read the next email, repeat.

No. If you simply click on a hyperlink in pretty much anything, Safari will open since it is the default browser. The only option you have is tap and hold on the link, and then select Add to reading list. It will then be stored int eh reading list in Safari.
