Officejet pro 8600 plus Printer failure - there is a problem with the printer or ink system...

Arghhh!  Like so many people on the forum I have today encountered this problem - it was working fine until it needed the magenta cartridge replaced.  (I have replaced the other colours successfully over the last couple of weeks).
Once I replaced magenta the message came up.  I have tried all the suggestions on the troubleshooting pages with removing the print head a couple of times, trying all the cartridges and cleaning the connections.  I am loathe to go down the road of any cost as the printer is just over 6 months old!
Given the cost of it I would expect much better for my money.  I did buy extra warranty from Staples, so will be calling them tomorrow, but I can't really wait the 30 days it could take with a daughter in her final year at University and so on - really disappointed and disgruntled.
I might have to go and buy ink for one of the other two printers I have in the house, but I really liked this and the fact that everyone could connect via wifi.  That has been problematical and I wondered if that was the problem as I can't clean the printheads from the computer software and I can't get any other 'page' on the control panel .
Anyone got any suggestions, please.

Is your printer still in warranty - it should be if only six months old? You can check with HP's warranty tool here.
I would suggest you call HP, 1-800-HPINVENt if you are in North America.  They should be able to either resolve the issue on the phone or send a replacement printer, it should be a lot faster than 30 days.  When I have needed a warranty replacement it was generally a few days.

It seems to be a bad print head, or it needs manually cleaned with lint free cloth and water. If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact HP Support (1800-474-6836).

Will not print. Turn it off then back on; will print one document, but not the last page. Try printing only the last page, but will not print. Will not print one page documents at all. Will not print more than one document without repeating this process.
First Error message: "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If you continue to get this message, contact HP." Out of warranty.

  • Photosmart 7520 error. there is a problem with the printer. turn printer off then on.

I have a photosmart 7520 experiencing the following issues.
Problem #1:   Randomly all the lights start to blink off and on and the display reads the following :
Error . There is a problem with the printer. Turn printer off then on.
I cannot find any one action that triggers this to happen.
Problem #2:  When the printer is turned on and idle,  also at RANDOM times, the printer will "Ding" followed by the  wireless light blinking. Then what sounds like the cartridges being cleaned, then a sound like the feeder spinning or the print head running full track from side to side, then ending with a "Ding" and then returning to normal.
When this occurs, the wireless connection is disconnected then reconnected. Also this Disables the "Scan to computer" function to all the computers on the network and requires manually re-enabling all .
From what I can tell the printer is restarting itself.
It is plugged directly into the wall outlet, no surge protector.
Tech support has already run me through the clean the print head steps, escalated me up the chain, and ultimately replaced the printer with a brand new one.
THE NEW PRINTER IS DOING ALL THE SAME THINGS AS THE PREVIOUS ONE.
This printer is connected wirelessly to a Netgear N900 router. My computers all running Windows 7, all are on the same network and workgroup and all are running Mcafee Total Protection.
If anyone is or has experienced the same or similar problems, I could sure use some help.

    How did you fix this?
I replaced an HP printer recently for a new Photosmart 7520 after a complete ink container emptied into the printer.
The old printer sometimes had difficulties switching it on and the new printer has the same problem.
Also the wireless connection regulary drops and can only be reenabled by switching of the printer and switching it back on, only this sometimes takes more than ten minutes before a simple push on the power button is translated in a power on of the printer.
Since the previous printer also suffered from these "power" issues, I think the problems are power related, but I have to check this first before I can say anything more about this.

  • There is a problem with the printer

Every day the printer comes on (out of sleep) and displays "there is a problem with the printer. Turn the printer off then on. ", why is this happening every day??
    This question was solved.

This problem got resolved, eventually. Although hp tech sent me to HPInstant Ink and they "reset" my printer, the error message returned in a couple of days, and continued daily. Another call to Tech Support/InstantInk advised me to return the printer for an exchange (it is 60 miles one way to return). We decided to install the Instant Ink cartridges as a last ditch effort to resolve the error messages, and it worked. No error messages. I have put the original ink cartridges back in the printer so I could use those up. Still no error messages and this printer is now working fine. PERSONAL OPINION: When we enrolled in instantink, hp tried to contact our printer via wireless (whatever) and when it was unable to an error message occurred EVERYDAY, after installing the instant ink cartridges a connection was made to hpinstantink completing the enrollment process.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus scanner failure

I have an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus all-in-one. When I first got it, all of the features worked fine: print, scan, and copy. A few weeks ago, it started to not scan or copy, and printer was hit or miss. I have managed to resolve the printing issue, but it still wont scan or copy. I have tried uninstalling the printer both from the hp folder and control panel and then reinstalling the driver (I have the full feature one). I have tried the scan and print doctor, and it doesnt make it past the second step. The error message the printer displays is, "scanner failure: unable to scan, copy, or send a fax." I have also followed the steps to go into services, and both of the necessary dependencies are listed for the WIA, and the RPC and shell hardware are both started. Please help.

    Hello ld2hx,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with scanning, copying and faxing.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Please click on the following link for A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus ...paper TRAY wont close all the way?

My Officejet Pro 8600 Plus paper tray will not return to the proper position. This has happened TWICE now, and always about 3 weeks into using it...
I returned the first printer and replaced it with the same because we love the features and ease of use. But now,  AGAIN??
I tried printing with it hanging out this time..it will print, but ....COME ON!  It makes it real hard to pull out the tray that my paper lays on after printing!
I called HP support the first time, he couldnt help me. Just said replace it.  There has to be something I can do a button or something?  I cant see it..does anyone else know?

    Zadora wrote:
Unofrtunately useless information. By trial and error I have found the only way to replace the tray is to lift the entire printer from the front at about a 20 degree angle and then the tray slides in. Very defective design. Never buy another HP.
It is possible you have a defective unit, I would suggest you Contact HP for service.
It may not be any consolation for you, but the tray works fine on my Officejet 8600 Pro Plus.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus: Scan to computer doesn't work with Win8.1 [solved: problem with USB3 Boost]

Since I installed 8.1 (pro), I can't use my 8600 Pro software for scanning to the computer (via USB). It looks like there is no communication with the printer as for the scanning software, but printing works as usual.
Tried to use the HP Printer Assistant: when I click the "Scan a Document or Photo" button, I get a "Scanner Unreachable" message. Also after a restart of the printer.
When I try to scan from Photoshop, the system first finds the printer but then fails to connect to it.
HP Update says that my system is up to date.
HP Print And Scan Doctor 4.2 finds and shows the printer on the Welcome panel and seems to be able to communicate with it, to a point.
It gives me a "Driver error" (sorry if is not called so in English--it takes over my keyboard language, which is French and says "Erreur du pilote") and states that no communication could be established between the scan driver and the printer, and that I should reboot the computer...
So I did and reran the Doctor software, which gave me the very same error message. This time, I clicked "Ignore" and let it do its things. It ran a "Scan Test" twice and indicated that everything was fine or had been repaired. But strangely nothing happened on the printer during those "tests". And at the end, as it offered me to make a scan test myself, I clicked OK and I had the "Scanner Unreachable" error message again.
So I made my scans on an USB key, as I had to do a few times already, and that went very well. But I'd be glad to have that "Scan to computer" function back. How?
    This question was solved.

    Hi ajmch,
I am sorry to hear that you are still having a scan issue. What antivirus program are you running on the computer? Can you try to scan through Paint and Windows Fax and Scan on the computer? When you run the HP Print and Scan Doctor what error message are you getting?
In this document for Windows: HP Scan Software Does Not Open or Scan on a Printer Using a USB Connection are steps  for checking the WIA and for checking software.
You can also Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files that may resolve this issue.
Let me know if this helped.
    Thank you,

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Wireless/Wired Network Sleep Problems

Okay, it's taken me a while to figure out exactly what causes this problem, but now I have, I'm no closer to resolving it.
    My setup is as follows:
Printer connected wirelessly to my Internet switch with a strong wireless signal.
The PCs I print from are on a combination of wired Gigabit connected to the same switch and wirelessly.
If I turn the printer on and print straight away from either a wired or wireless PC, it works.
If the printer goes to sleep, then printing from a wired connection won't wake the printer and causes the job to fail, but printing from a wirelessly connected PC wakes the printer and job prints okay.
After the printer has been awoken by a wireless connection, the wired connected PC still cannot print and I get the message "Unable to Communicate with Printer".
I have installed HP Print and Scan Doctor and checked the printer with it, but it finds no problems, yet if I send a test page from Doctor, it still doesn't print when wired.
I can reproduce this problem on a laptop with both wired and wireless connections by letting the printer go to sleep, turning wireless off on the laptop, and with the wired connection trying to print.  Then when the print has failed, turning the wireless on again and printing again, works.
The printer has a static IP address assigned on the DHCP server, but while I expect having a wired connection to the printer might resolve this problem, the printer is located away from a network port.
The firmware reports to be up to date and all along the printer responds on a browser link from either wired or wireless connections.

Honestly, this is a pretty common problem with this model.  I have found that setting a static IP address outside DHCP range and on the printer can help:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600+ "There is a problem with the printer or ink system..."

I've had mine for a year and a half. All new cartridges. Called HP - they said I probably need a new printer, of course.
I have an Office Depot guarantee that's still good and an HP warrenty  that's good until 2017 - that's how paranoid I am about HP - but both want me to send the printer back. This will take weeks. I am so leery of HP Printers, I kept the box behind my couch since July, 2013!
What printer should I go for next? I noticed HP is not selling the 8600 anymore. I've bought printers EVERY TWO YEARS since 1999. Epson sucks, Brother sucks. HP ink is outrageously expensive. Any ideas?

Thanks for asking, Bob. Prepare for my screed: Saturday night, I was on the phone with an HP tech, Andre. After an HOUR, he told me he'd have to transfer me to another support team which he couldn't access because HP was updating. He said the update would take EIGHT hours. I called back to get another opinion, and that guy said only TWO hours for the update, call back at 9 a.m. EST. I called and was told SIX more hours to go, so Andre was correct. Andre said he would call me back at 6 p.m. EST. He did not call, but when I called HP and asked for a supervisor, he told me that Andre had called me at 12 p.m. Sunday afternoon. He lied. I have caller ID on my phone and on my TV. No call from Andre.
The supervisor then transferred me to "one of his best people, she went to college." Okay, he was right, Ann was exceptional, but she made me do everything I had already done six times: unplug, take out the cartridges, take out the whole printer head, put them back in - nothing. She said that HP could send me a new printer by the next morning, which I thought was very optimistic, but things were looking up UNTIL she transferred me to Cindy who said NO NEW PRINTER just the printer part. I said I had three more years on my warrenty which cost me $47.00 and I WANTED A NEW PRINTER BECAUSE THE 8600 IS A CRAPPY MACHINE THAT HP DOES NOT EVEN SELL ANYMORE AND THERE ARE NO LESS THAN 55 COMPLAINTS ON THE HP FORUM. There was smoke coming out of my ears, I'm sure.
Cindy stuck to her guns and I asked for HER supervisor, but that person/department doesn't work on Sunday. So, I have to call back after 8 a.m. EST Monday.  I will NOT accept any offer except an ENTIRE NEW PRINTER.  I paid $25 for a warrantee from Office Depot, which is where I bought the 8600. They went out of business - just across the street and joined another company. They are now Office Max and the closest store is an hour from home. So, I have paid over $70 in warrantee fees and I'm not accepting just a part that might last only a year or so like this one did. How do they know that the printer itself isn't ruining the printer head? They don't. I also asked for all new ink. There $100 worth of ink in this piece of crap and I don't want to lay out another $100 to replace it.
I've had two PCs since 1999, but this is the FOURTH HP printer that has pooped the bed. I got an Epson when I bought my Dell PC in 1999, which I replaced with an HP.  I bought a new HP PC in 2011 and I've been through THREE HPs and ONE Brother. I got an HP printer THREE times for this PC. When I did my due diligence, I saw that the HP 8600 was selling in some stores for $300, so I thought I was set with this machine. I turned in my old, dead HP to Office Depot, got credit, which I put into this machine. That was in July 2013. What a scam these people have going. This is called PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE, and the public is aware. I HAVE HAD IT!

  • In using my Officejet Pro 8500A Plus I am having on going problems with being able to print document

the print function from the command with any program sets the printer up and it says "printing" but nothing happens.  If I uninstall and re-install and print it will work until it rests and then stops again.  Same thing if I power down and back up - it will print ok and then after it rests - no printing again .  Copy function is now doing the same thing.
I have run the fix tool and uninstalled and unistalled etc. and on and on -  this is nuts.  Any help?

    Ok PC sorted.
A reservation says - I want this PC to be always given this IP address.
To reserve an IP from the DHCP panel.
    (in your list of images)
Enter the Mac number of the PC - alongside the IP number you want to give it.
The Mac number is also called the Hardware Address. Network Utility will give you the number. Be careful, you need the Hardware Address of the Wireless connction - not the Ethernet connection which will appear first.
    (Select en0 en1 etc. )
OK - I have a solution for your games too. But you are not going to like it.
Your gaming devices only support old-fashioned 40-bit WEP. Which is easy to crack.
Your AEBSn supports that too - but it is incompatible with 802.11n.
This is what you can do (if you want)
Click the Airport Icon (in Airport Utility) and go the Wireless tab.
You'll see a pulldown marked Radio Mode. If you click it you see 4 options.
But if you OPTION click. You see 8 options. Select 802.11b/g compatible.
Now if you click the Wireless Security pulldown - you'll get the option of 40-bit WEP.
This will give you a Hex String which will fit into your gaming devices.
But of course, you have sacrificed 802.11n to get it.
Another option is to dig out an old 802.11g wireless box and make a dual-band network.
    I think we are done!!!

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus Wireless DOES NOT WORK with Mac Mavericks Based Network

Replaced my Brother system with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus yesterday.  There are many positive features of the 8600 Plus that prompted me to purchase it...
    Modular Design
    Large legal sized Scanner
    Standard/Legal Paper Printer
    Copy
    E Print Capability
High Yield / Affordable Toner Replacements
Unfortunately, I discovered the Wireless network capability is less than desirable.  After hours of installing, reinstalling, work arounds, internet solution searches, it just will not work.  If you are able to get the printer to work on your network (with router), the scanner will not be visible, vice versa, etc...etc...etc...
HOWEVER, I did discover this solution.  If the unit is near your base computer, install it to your computer with a usb connection.  That allows you to have scanning and printing from that unit.  Then you can connect the unit through its ethernet connection to your router.  From there all computers can print within your network.  It's not the best way to connect a WIRELESS printer, but at least it works.
I'm not certain why HP and Apple can't find a solution, but I never found anything on the net that worked.  The problem seems to stem from the new Mavericks update from Apple, but I'm really not sure.  I wasted an entire day of productivity attempting to make it work.  I'm posting this so you don't make the same mistake.  If you happen to know a verified solution, then I would welcome the information.  Best of luck!!!

It may be a mac driver issue. Try installing the bootcamp update for your version of vista from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
I'm not sure if this is supposed to work since I've never tried mac hardware at 5ghz on windows before...

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (All-in-One) - Incoming Fax but mistakenly answer phone

I have landline phone service.  On this line, I have multiple phones, an answering machine, internet service via wireless Uverse setup, and the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus as a fax.  It's also a printer/scanner - but that uses the wireless Uverse service.
The unit works as a phone, if I answer in fewer than 4 rings.  The answer machine picks up after 4 rings.  If a fax, the fax connects after 6 rings.  (Auto answer function is turned on.)  This works.
If I mistakenly answer a fax call with the phone that the HP 8600 is connected through, I can press: 1,2,3 and the fax will answer.  This works.
Problem: If I mistakenly answer a fax call from one of the other phones in the house (same phone line is ringing as before - but the phone is NOT the one through which the HP 8600 is connected) - 1,2,3, does NOT work.  If I rush to the HP 8600: pressing the "fax" button on the unit does not connect the fax call; nor does the HP 8600 give me the option to "Accept" the call, when the phone as been answered.
Does anyone know what buttons to push to get the fax to connect when the phone line is answered at a phone?  Either at the answered phone OR if I can get to the HP 8600 when I hear the fax tone - buttons I can push on the HP 8600 to get it to respond to the fax tones coming in on the line?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I see that you have some concerns when it comes to answering a fax call by accident from another phone.  Pressing the 1.2.3 on the fax is the proper way to remedy the issue when you answer from the fax, however this feature will not work from another phone.
I do realize that this is an inconvenience.  The only resolution would be to contact the sender of the fax and have them resend.
