Offline files - check client mode

Hi, how can I check Offline Files mode on client computer.
I would like to know if the Offline Files are in Online, Slow Link, Auto Offline or Manually Offline mode.
Is it possible to check it with Powershell or something ?
Can I maybe write a script which will ask all my clients in the domain for Offline Files mode ?
Thank you very much.

Hi,
I cannot find a PowerShell command that can achieve this. We can run the “gpresult /h report.html” in the command prompt to check if “Configure slow-link mode” policy is applied on clients.

  • Windows Offline Files / Sync Center - 99GB?? bug?

Currently have a laptop connected to a domain where the user's My Documents folder is set up in Sync Center... while the laptop is on the network everything is fine and dandy, however once the user disconnects a good portion of the files and folder show
a gray X indicating that they haven't sync'd over a local copy. When going into the 'Disk usage' tab for Sync Center, everything shows as 99GB used, 99GB available and the drive size is 999GB. If I do a manual sync I see that it fails due to not enough offline
cache space. Attempts to change it with the 'Change size' button have failed as nothing shows up when I click on that button. Free disk space shows up as roughly 24GB free and Windows Scan Disk reveals nothing wrong with the drive. Help!

    Hi,
Did this issue occur before ? Did the machines in the domain share the same issue with you?
1.If the issue occured occasionally, I recommend you to  manually re-initialize the offline files database/client-side cache following this link:

  • Satellite A50-532: Synchronization / Offline-files

    Hi,
I am using a Satellite A50-532 and I want to make files available locally / offline that are stored on a server. I used to use the XP build-in Offline-files functionality with my old laptop which worked without any problems. Unfortunatley it does not work with the Toshiba as I can't see the data on the server in the tree-structure in the "Synchronization"-window. Right click menu item "Make available offline" is not offered by XP. I already disabled the "Quick user change" as suggested by MS. Firewall and Network problems can also be excluded.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance,
    tobi77

    Hi
Did you configure your Toshiba notebook to use Offline files?
If not you can configure it on this way:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
Select the Enable Offline Files check box, and then click OK.
I hope it will help you. Useful article about this issue you can find under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307853/en-us

  • Checking Offline Files Usage by Domain User - Server Side

    Hello.
Our IT staff is looking for a way to determine which domain users have Offline Files set up on their PCs. I don't fully understand how Offline Files works, but I'm guessing it is mostly a client-side mechanism. That having been said, does anyone know
of a way or a place on the file server which can tell us exactly who in the domain is using O.F.? I'm sure there is some kind of script that can be written to query each PC individually, but we would prefer to check server-side if possible.
Domain Controller OS: Windows Server 2003
File Server OS: Windows Server 2003
Client OS: Some Windows XP, Most Windows 7
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,
It seems that some kind of scrip can achieve this. I suggest you ask for help from The Official Scripting Guys Forum:

  • Possible to delete Offline Files content for a specific user from the Client Side Cache (CSC) ?.

    Hello Everyone,
We would like to implement a script to delete the offline files in the Client Side Cache (CSC) for a nominated user (on Windows 7 x64 enterprise).
    I am aware that;
    1. We can use a registry value to flush the entire CNC cache (for all users) next time the machine reboots.
    2. If we delete the user's local profile it appears that Windows 7 also removes their content from the local CSC.
However, we would like to just delete the CSC content for a particular nominated user without having to delete their local user profile.
In our environment we have many users that share workstations but only use them occasionally. We don't use roaming profile so we would like to retain all the users' local profiles but still delete the CSC content for any users that haven't
    logged on in a week.
Any ideas or info would be appreciated !
    Thanks, Makes

    Hi,
I don't think this is possible.
If you want to achieve it via script, I suggest you post it in official script forum for more professional help:

  • Windows 8.1 Client Side Caching - Is it possible to specify the location of the offline file cache?

    Hi,
Is there any approved way to change the location of the offline files cache in Windows 8.1?  I'm asking before moving client systems from Windows 7 where a registry change was required - is this still the way to go?
I believe that if the default user-profile directory is moved, this causes problems for updates to Windows 8/8.1 now, is the same true if you move CSC?
Just a bit of background.  The systems I want to do this for have smallish SSD boot drives with a higher capacity spinning disk.  The machines are members of a domain with Folder Redirection setup.  I could setup group policies to disable
caching of some of the larger directories or even disable CSC entirely on the machines which have an SSD boot drive, but would prefer not to do so.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your descryption, In windows 7, the tool is migwiz.exe, namely the Windows Easy Transfer, you can modify the registry in the way listed in the post below:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bbf5890c-b3d7-4b38-83d8-d9a5e025fb2b/how-to-move-clientside-caching-to-a-new-location?forum=w7itproinstall
In Windows 8, Windows easy transfer is also a built in tool to migrate user profiles and user settings, but as for the offline transfer, I suggest to use the USMT for your situation.
Because with USMT you can specify the folder that you want to migrate the files to, by using an offline.xml you can set the path just as the sample listed below:
    <offline>
         <winDir>
              <path>C:\Windows</path>
              <path>D:\Windows</path>
              <path>E:\</path>
         </winDir>
         <failOnMultipleWinDir>1</failOnMultipleWinDir>
    </offline>

  • Offline Files: Win 7 client - Encrypt files only went halfway, now neither?

Hi all.  I was just doing some testing with this Offline Files feature.  This is my first time testing some of the additional management options for it.  Client is Win 7 Pro (64bit), server is 2008 R2 and AD is a basic single-server type design
(a few VMs) at 2008 R2 functional level.
The process seemed simple - a brand new compuer, by default all redirected folders enable Offline Files.  I also picked one network share (the user's home folder on the server, not much space usage).
The issue, and this post, is about the Encryption tab (under Sync Cener > Manage Offline Files).  I can't recall offhand if I had finished the First-time sync or not, but at some point I clicked the Encrypt Files button.  This seemed to progress
for a while, until it popped up a message saying a particular file was already in use by another user.  At this point, it dropped out of the encrypting files progress screen.
Now I had the button changed from Encrypt Files to Encrypt Remaining Files.  I took this to mean it would simply resume where it left off once clicked.  Instead, I click it and nothing happens, no progress screen.  I rebooted, camne back into
Sync Center, and it showed a status of Ready for first-time sync.  Unsure of why since it had previously said "last sync on date/time", I still went to the Encryption tab.
Long story short, when I first entered this Encryption tab, only hte Encrypt button was available, the Unencrypt button was greyed out.  Now when I go in, each tmie, after some reboots, it's always both but they alternate, one saying encrypt or unencrypt
remaining files.  S it's like it i scaught halfway between fully encrypted or not encrypted at all.
I rebooted, looked at Disk Usage, and it says 0MB.  So I did one more "first time sync" and let that go to completion before anything else.  Now it says 1.31GB which is perhaps about right.  Now, I see Encrypt Files, and Unencrypt
Remaining Files.  I click the latter button, I see a progress screen for a little bit, then that disappers and I still see both buttons in the same state.
With this being my first time with this Offline Files stuff I am thinking this is very non-robust.  There should be a way to just start over, a "clear all" type of button.  Can anybody advise on how I should proceed?
    Thank you.

Well it seemed to have worked after all, but it took until the following day to show.  That is, I followed the steps to make that registry key, rebooted and so forth, didn't see any changes, rebooted more, no changes still.  The following day I
went to look at it and it had cleared itself up.  It seems the Offline Files feature just needs some general improvement but that's eomthing I can't control.  Perhaps on the next test system I run into this won't be a problem.
By the way I later learned that the reason this "file in use" error occurred during encryption (thus caused the encryption to mess up and not work anymore) was simply because it was in use by that user on another computer logged in.  This same thing
causes sync errors when sync'ing, if the user is on another machine using that file.  So again this sounds like MS just needs to beef up the management functionality of this feature I guess.

  • Offline Files sync gives Access Denied on Windows 8.1 Enterprise

A small number of our staff have now been issued with Windows 8.1 Enterprise hybrid tablet computers, however there is a problem with using Offline Files on them - when synchronising, it responds "Access Denied".
The tablets have Windows 8.1 Enterprise with all the latest updates on them. Staff users have a home folder on the network under \\server\staff\homes\departmentname\username which gets mapped to U: and their My Documents is redirected there. The server is currently
    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.
    We have tried:
Resetting the Offline Files cache using the FormatDatabase registry key
Using Group Policy Objects to force Offline Files synchronisation at logon and logoff
Clearing the local cached copy of the user's profile from the machine and getting them to log back on to recreate it
Setting up Offline Files event logging to the event viewer - this provides no useful information as it only logs disconnect/reconnect and logoff/logon events
Forcing Group Policy update using gpupdate /force
Forcing synchronisation using PowerShell and https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb309189%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
As suggested by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461 we gave the All Staff security group Read permissions on F:\Staff (which is the one that is shared as \\server\staff) and then blocked inheritance for folders below that
    We also checked the following:
The CSC cache has not been relocated
No error 7023 or event 7023 errors relating to Offline Files are present in the event logs
The Offline Files service is running
The OS is already Windows 8.1 Enterprise, so installing the Pro Pack is not applicable
In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UserState\UserStateTechnologies\ConfigurationControls  all the values are set to 0 and not 1
We do not use System Center Configuration Manager
No errors were found in the Folder Redirection event logs
None of these solved the problem, does anyone have any suggestions?
Here is the error we are seeing:

    Hi,
Generally speaking, this problem is most probably occurs at File Server Client.
Firstly, please check the sharing file Sync Settings.
    Shared file properties\Sharing\Advanced Sharing\Caching
Also check shared file user list, make sure these problematic user account have full permission.
On the other hand, could you able to access to the shared file directly in Windows Explorer?
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help, and unmark the answers if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]
Yes, the user can access the shared folder in Windows Explorer. The user has the following permissions:
    Traverse Folder/Execute File
    List Folder/Read Data
    Read Attributes
    Read Extended Attributes
    Create Files/Write Data
    Create Folders/Append Data
    Write Attributes
    Write Extended Attributes
    Delete
    Read Permissions
Here is a screenshot of how the Caching settings are set up on the top-level Staff share.

  • Under Windows 8.1, Adobe Drive crashes on File- Check In... when invoked from an Adobe creative application.

I am testing my drive connector on Windows 8.1 (64-bit) using Adobe Drive (5.0.2) with Photoshop CC (15.1.0.148) and Bridge CC (6.1.0.116), and I find that if I use File->Check In... from the creative apps (I checked InDesign too), the application crashes inside of AdobeDriveUI.dll.  The crash happens as it attempts to display the dialog that solicits a Check In comment.
I have tried using both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of Adobe Drive, but both exhibit the same issue.  I am quite certain that my connector is not involved, as the crash happens in native code that collects the version comment *before* my ICheckInHandler instance gets called.
I am interested in any insight or work-arounds that might exist.  Thanks for any help!

    this issue.
    1. went to SAFE Mode and tried to run the application from USB

some more info on setup :
we have a micro controller on board, some part of memory (present on board) is used to keep application and server. we can open this memory via USB connection to PC. then we can see all files present at this memory on PC (behaves like externally connected
    USB Drive) .
When we start this application . it will start the server . server will send 'request file' to controller soft. (this part is working fine), and controller will send back response , as soon as response file(RSP.txt) will appear in USB drive it will get corrupted
.(here RSP.txt file is present in controller USB decided memory but to open this we are using PC RAM). crashing of RSP.txt file will crash whole application. This RSP File is of FAT Type.
i have copied application in another external drive and tried to RUN application. it will not crash  . but USB can not receive the "RSP.txt" (as it is not in communication with controller soft). and problem is in response file.

  • Win 7 Offline Files and Captivate

We save files to "My Documents" so that we can use Windows Sync to enable offline files (portability and server backup). Adobe products don't like pointing to network locations for output (published files and such). If I publish to a sync'd folder, it looks like a network file and Adobe products seem to hesitate or complain about this. I can point published files to the hard drive (C: for instance) but I lose the functionality of offline files (sync, backup). I have "aliased" a drive (for instance the L: drive) which Captivate thinks is a local drive (and not a network drive) and that works pretty well. The "aliased" drive points to the sync'd drive (read: networked drive).
Any suggestions for more suitable implementations are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Michael

    Hi,
Do you configure “Always available offline” on the clients? If so, disable it to check if the issue still exists. The Offline Files feature must be enabled on the client computer for files and programs to be automatically cached. Additionally, the
Optimized for performance option does not have any effect on client computers using Windows Vista or newer.
For more detailed information, please refer to the articles below:

  • Drive with Offline Files folder not available for 2 minutes after being connected to the network.

    Hi
We use Windows SP1 with one folder from the User HomeDirectory set to be available offline.
The problem we encounter is that when going from Offline to Online via VPN, there is a 2 minutes delay for the drive where the offline folder is located to be available again. Other drives mapped at VPN connection time are available immediately
after we applied KB2705233. Only the drive that contains the folder that we make available offline has this delay issue.
I found out KB2663418 but it does not apply as we have Windows 7 SP1. However the symptoms are the same:
< This issue occurs because the client-side caching (CSC) interface tries to reconnect to the source before the network is actually available. This behavior causes the SMB cache to enter a negative state. In this situation, the CSC interface tries to
reconnect to the source on the next 2-minute retry interval.>
Does one know how to force a check of the connectivity or if there is another fix available ?
    thanks in advance
    bruno

    Hi,
Why KB2663418 didn't applied to your computer? It applied to
Windows 7 Service Pack 1, when used with:
    Windows 7 Enterprise
    Windows 7 Professional
    Windows 7 Ultimate
Did you use Windows 7 Home Basic or Home Premium?  However, Windows 7 Home Basic and Premium does not support Offline Files.
    Thus please try that hotfix.

  • Offline Files (Background) Sync makes File Explorer and other programs responding slow

    Hi TechNet,
I have a problem with Offline Files and
    especially with VPN users.
    For VPN users, the slow-link
policy is activated with a background
sync interval of one hour. But, when Offline Files is syncing, their File Explorer is hanging (not responding) by creating new files/folders, deleting files/folder, or rename files/folders. This happens only in their (redirected)UserData
folder or with other DFS shares which are cached locally. In other programs (Outlook or Office 2010) when they save data in the UserData folder exactly the same things happens (not responding).
This problem occurs in both the
internal network and via VPN, so bandwidth is
not the problem. When the sync is finished, everything is working fine again.
    I've tested:
    - Offline mode with scheduled background sync: problem occurs
    - Online mode with manual sync: problem occurs
    - Rebuild offline cache database: no effect
    - Tested with fresh Windows 8(.1) installations and user profiles: problem occurs
    - Monitoring SMB traffic with WireShark: no result
    - Montoring Windows 8(.1) clients with procmon: no result
    - Tested with full DFS paths: problem occurs
    - Disable IPv6: problem occurs
    - Disable Windows Search: problem occurs
    - Browsing in the Offline Files folder (Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> View Offline Files) is very slow (with +- 200 files). This occurs also when Offline Files is not syncing.
Does anyone have an idea how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Bas

      Hello Steven,
First, sorry for the late response, I have tested a few things for you:
Offline mode with background sync over a VPN connection: During scheduled sync File Explorer hangs. When bypass the cache by using a UNC path (State: Online) there is also a delay, but this is caused by bandwidth.
Online Mode with Manual Sync over a LAN connection: During sync File Explorer hangs in (redirected)UserData Folders (They are always available offline, maybe this is a problem?). With UNC paths, there is no delay…
The first folder/file is created slowly, but the second is fast.
    It's like csc
    still
    must initialize
    the cache…or something…
    I m  I made some
print screens, but I can not upload them because my account is not verified.......
    trT  Thanks,

  • Problem to make able Offline File Windows 7

Hi, I need your help to solve this problem whit the offline files.
This is the step-by-step of what i done:
I opened the control panel in windows 7
I Clicked on the sync center icon
I Clicked on the manage offline files link
I Clicked on the enable offline files button
    I Restarted the pc
But it doesn’t work out: when I go back to the start on the control panel I find the button “Enable Offline Files” instead of the “Disable  Offline Files”.
Can someone tell me why? I need to know what I do wrong.
    Tks

    Hi,
Did you enable offline files by using an administrator account? Just a confirmation, thanks for your understanding.
In addition, would you please let me know whether the problematic Windows 7 client computer joined to a domain?
If it’s in domain environment, please contact your administrator and confirm if disable “Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files feature” policy setting (the path in GPME: Computer Configuration-> Policies-> Administrative Templates->
Network-> Offline Files). If disable this policy setting, Offline Files is disabled and users cannot enable it.
Please also refer to following TechNet article and check if can help you.

  • Make offline files accessible after profile update

    Hi altogether,
is there anybody out there who has a deep understanding of the Windows 7 offline files feature? I would really like to know how users are granted access to the offline cache. I found the files in C:\Windows\CSC, but this folder and its subfolders do not
have any ACL structure (just one: Local System). Where are the access permissions stored? And is it possible to adapt this if we change the profile owner?
Here is the background for my question:
We are about to perform a AD migration using the Quest Resource Updating Manager. The offline cache is consisting of system files, that you can just access either taking ownership or using scripts executed as Local System. So the RUM is not possible to grant
the updated profile access to this offline cache and the cache has to be rebuild. We do not want every user to rebuild his offline cache. The problem is mentioned here:
    https://support.quest.com/SolutionDetail.aspx?id=SOL9359
Still this is not a Quest only problem.
For Windows XP there exists CSCCMD.exe which is contained in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tool. These tools are not compatible with newer Windows versions (I installed, had to replace the cscdll.dll and it didn't even recognized that CSC was enabled)
not to talk about 64 bit. Is there any way to imitate CSCCMD.exe /RESID? This article aims in the same direction but concerning another problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977229  . I did not figure out how to solve our problem using the Offline Files WMI Provider.
Here are more information about CSCCMD:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884739
Can anybody help me? I am really curious about this!

    Hello,
        1 create tablespace TS1
        2  create restore point RP1;
3 drop tablespace TS1 (datafile  '/c:/ts1.dbf')  including files
        4 restore database to RP1
5 alter database open resetlogs failed with this error :
            ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01245: offline file 7 will be lost if RESETLOGS is done
      ORA-01110: data file 7: '/c:/ts1.dbf'
Can you help me please to fix this issue and to understand why it's occured.

    Hi,
If you check the alert log you will get message similar to
Recovery deleting file #7:'<Oracle_Home>/db/dbs/UNNAMED00007' from controlfile.
    Now you have 2 option
    1. If you have backup of that tablespace TS1  then you can restore and recover it
If you don't need that tablespace then you offline drop that datafile 7 . Open the database in resetlogs mode and then drop tablespace TS1
    Thank you
