Offline Recapturing???

Here is my situation... I captured my footage at an offline quality. The tapes were recorded to free run timecode and I captured each tape with an In point at the beginning of the tape and an Out point at the end. Final Cut creates a new clip at each timecode break so for each tape, I have multiple clips.
Well, I edited the project at JPEG quality and when I was done I created an offline project to recapture at full quality. I batch captured all offline clips and was not able to capture all my clips due to timecode breaks.
Is there a way to bypass this problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Verify that the timecode on the tape is the same as the clip, because when you capture the way you did with Free Run (or time of day) code, the proper timecode doesn't always get recorded for each clip. This is where Logging and Capturing each clip would have been your best bet.
If the time code matches, it might be because with free run code, where you have breaks, when FCP wants to recapture, it needs enough PRE ROLL in order to get a running start and capture the footage. When it doesn't have that, if you used footage from the first second (hmmm...that looks odd...first, second. first second...anyway) then FCP doesn't have enough pre-roll to capture that clip. Again, Log and Capture solves this as you know from the start that you need more pre-roll.
What can you do? Well, not having had to solve this issue, I'm not really sure. First off, Media Manage your sequence into a new project, using only the footage in that project, then try to capture the clips in the bin. If you find one with an issue, move on to the next one. When you are done and have all of your problem clips set aside, track down their TC numbers, CAPTURE NOW at those spots, and cut them in manually. That's all I can think to do.

  • Recapturing Offline Logged Mono Clips as Stereo Clips

    Help please!
I captured several of my tapes in mono by mistake and have already edited several sequences. I thought I could easily go back later and recapture them as stereo and they would update themselves in the sequence and relink all subclips from mono to stereo. Well, I tried to do it tonight and it appears the audio field is not changeable. I made the master clip offline recaptured it as stereo but it didn't work. I even tried relogging and capturing a whole new master clip that was identical to the mono version and then relinking this to the subclips but it didn't work.
Why can't use change the logged clip audio settings when the clip is offline!! This seemeingly simple operation will cost me days of extra work if there isn't a solution. Oh Final Cut Guru, show me the way!
    Thanks

    Hey Blissfire,
Thanks for bringing this up. I just got on this forum and this one of the key issues that I've wanted to solve. One time this issue set me back two weeks. A lot of sleepless night...
I'd give major props to Shane or Studio X, or another FCP wiz, if they can answer this. Any seasoned user can answer the easy questions, but what separates one top user from another is these meaty questions.
If not, maybe they'd know an easier workaround than Tony suggested.
Hopefully my prodding will get an answer that will make the sun shine again in tech world!

  • Batch capture logged clips makes subclips that are invisible in sequence

    Any ideas?
I log a series of clips (the icon is the square master clip icon). They are offline until I batch capture. However, once I batch capture, they become subclips(jaggy-edge subclip icon). They can play in the viewer and they are viewable in Quicktime. However, once I put them in the sequence, they are only black, even after rendering. HOWEVER, if I do a capture now off of the SAME tape w/ the SAME settings it will play just fine (after render) in the SAME sequence.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance

Okay, finally able to do a couple of tests. I started a new project w/ settings for capturing good ol' NTSC DV, logged some footage and then batch captured (ntsc footage) -- no problem at all. The clips were clips, not subclips. Then I went into a project for DVCPro HD 720 30p, and pulled some clips from my original low res project into the HD project. Made those offline, then batch captured those at the full HD resolution. Not a problem there either. Then I went back into the original low res project, made a clip offline, recaptured it at full HD res, no problem. Soo.... I think there is some connection between what I've been capturing at my "low res HD" setting and the problem of turning the logged clips into subclips upon capture.
All that said...I think I'm ok. At least I know now when I do need to capture it all in full HD res, I'll be able to, and it will relink into my project correctly as visible clips.
Also, how can you mark somthing "helpful' if it has already been marked "solved"...it is not undoable, correct?

  • Batch Recapture with HV10

I accidentally deleted some footage from an HDV project - footage that was shot on the Sony Z1U and captured with the M1U. I no longer have access to the camera or the deck; but I did manage borrow a friend's Canon HV10. However, I don't seem to be able to Batch Capture any of the lost media with this camera. The camera tries to cue up the tape several times and then I get a "cannot locate Timecode" message. I can do Now Capture handily, so I don't think it is a problem with the camera. Is there some problem with FCP Batch Captures and Canon cameras that I don't know about?
    Please enlighten.

    Thanks Michael,
So how do I export a BL of the selected clips from the sequence timeline? Doesn't seem obvious to me but I'll have another look. I also thought that the BL, when imported, is going to give me a bunch of offline new clips in the Browser which then wont easily be replaced in the sequence.
Don't think you'll be able to reconnect to the original clips (although it's worth a try).
Na I doubt it either cause even with timecode matching the 4ch is gonna be a problem I am pretty sure. Looks like recapture and re-edit is going to be the best option. Urgh!
You can also drag a clip to the log and capture window and change the parameters and then recapture.
Hmmm interesting. Does that leave the clip on the timeline in place, take the media offline and then after capture bring the clip online leaving the edit in place? Cause that would be a great help of course if that is the case.

  • HELP! - Getting RAW footage into Offline RT jpeg project

I hoping someone can write down a brief explanation of the steps needed to do this final step in the edit process.
I imported all my footage as an Offline RT jpeg format so it wouldn't take up so much space on the HD. Now I'm completely finished editing the project and need to send the raw footage back through so it can replace the Low-res jpeg stuff in the chosen cuts.
This is the first time I'm doing this and I just want to do it write, not wanting to risk hurting the project.
(I'm working with Final Cut Pro 4.5)
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

I don't know what RAW footage is. I thought RAW as a digital photo format without compression.
On the chance you mean recapturing footage in it's original format,
    1. take the footage you have now off-line
    2. Open up Log & Capture
    3. Select all your footage in the Browser and select BATCH CAPTURE
    4. In Log & Capture make sure the settings are for the correct format for the footage you wish to capture
    5. Capture
    6. Make sure the settings of your sequence are changed to match the footage you just captured.
There is probably an easier way using media manager - but I never use MM ....
    good luck.

  • Audio Not Syncing After Offline Conversion/Batch Capture from OfflineRT-DV

    WORKFLOW:
    1. Shooting HDV on a Sony HDR-V1U (DF/NDF Timecode setting is AUTO on the camera)
    2. Using the camera to downconvert to DV as I import into FCP 7 (final product will be NTSC DVD).
    3. I first capture and log using the OfflineRT NTSC (Photo JPEG) preset
    4. I make my Edits, and then use Media Manager to create new project and create offline media referenced by duplicated items. (Set sequences to: DV NTSC 48 kHz)
    5. The clips I need are then batch captured using Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
    PROBLEMS:
    A. As I'm initiating my batch capture in step #5 above, the following warning is generated:
WARNING: You are about to capture Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting or configured for Non-Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media, or removal of master clip relationships.
    B. When I playback my sequence, the in/out points are off by several seconds. (like the media within the clip slid ahead several seconds--to fix it, I would have to slide each clip back)
    QUESTIONS:
Q1: How can I properly execute my workflow while avoiding the WARNING above and the problem with the in/out points?
NOTE: The OfflineRT clips in the original project (#3 above) are shown as DF (semicolon in timecode), but the duplicated clips in the DV project (#4 above) are NDF (colon in timecode). I have already tried changing my capture preset to Firewire NTSC NDF, recapturing the clips, and the result is the same.
Q2: Should the capture preset be the same or different when logging the first (OfflineRT) and second (DV NTSC 48kHz) times?

Wish I had a simple answer for you, stay tuned, some folks who actually use those cameras will drop by sooner or later.

  • How to recapture from the timeline?

I had a hard drive crash with 6 hours of footage on it. I need to re-capture the footage from the timeline. The project is only 2 min long but when I try and re-capture FCP wants to digitize all 6 hours of footage. How can I make it only capture what is in the timeline and not entire tapes?

I media managed the project using copy which kept all of the render files. Then I media managed the project as offline. I'm recapturing the segments that were lost with the offline and copy/pasting them into the copied sequence. Seems to be working. I just need to get 2 Betas out and then I can ditch the entire project!

  • Multi camera project, Online/Offline. Major issues reconnect/re-digitize

Ok gang I got brain bender.
3 camera show, Multi camera project shot Digi-beta. Brought the tapes (3@90min) in low res (dv50) and now I need up-res the files or as apple would call it “online/offline”
According to the book this can be done a few diffrent ways. I have explored these ways and I’m failing...very very badly.
    Attempt #1.
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” save the project to new folder in drive with new settings (10-bit). All looks good till you try to recapture at 10-bit. Clip names get changes and numerical extensions apple put on during “make new clip” don’t match. In short I have a show that wont go. FCP wants to digitize everything
    Attempt #2
    - took time line into media manager made the sequence “offline” Selected the clips batches of clips and then re-digitaized. Again clips don’t match and FCP wants to digitize everything.
This is where I need your help. What can I do to make this process work? Below are my next moves...but before I spend another 18 hours in a bay I want to make sure I get some other input.
    Option 1)
Encode all the tapes in 10-bit, Try to reconnect. I would like to stay away from this because the space needed for 10-bit is out of this world and I do have other projects. Again I’m looking for that secret 1,2,3 to making clips only re-digitizing.
    Option 2)
try some other method I haven't tried yet. ( this is the one I’m hoping for)
Thanks for your time an I hope it hear from you ASAP as I’m dying over here. Multi-clip with online/offline it’s exactly in the index in the FCP user guide. If any one has some posting or web pages I could book make for future that would be a big help.
Thank you all for your time in advance
    Jeff

I must playback in Premiere the 4 video streams in real time
Good luck with that.  Many folks have trouble with even one stream.
edit those offline low res copies to get my edit decision list
I'm not sure offline editing with AVCHD will be possible because of the folder structure.  You may not be able to 'replace' the lower res copies with AVCHD.
My output format is Flash F4V 640x360 px square pixels for Internet playback.
Oh, man.  Shooting HD of any flavor is just overkill that adds unnecessary work to the process.  Have your client shoot in DV.

  • Help Recapturing Footage

No doubt this question has been answered several times already, but I can't find an answer that suits my circumstances so I apologise if any one is going over old ground.
I'm cutting tasters for a media company. There are usually about 5/6 tapes to capture for what often ends up as a 3 minute sequence. Sometimes, even months later, I'll need to go back to the project and make another version… so I need to keep my entire capture scratch on an external hard-drive somewhere.
What I've been doing, foolishly, is burning GBs by taking in whole tapes in good quality, expecting to be able to delete the media once the edit is complete. Unfortunately, my employers would like me to keep the capture scratch so I can make tweaks and changes as and when the need arrises.
So what I'd like to start doing is taking in up to five tapes in low quality to keep permanently (RT Offline looks good for this) and then take in only what I've isolated in my sequence in full quality (ProRes422 looks good for this). That way, I can keep going back to the original project file, put together another sequence, and capture it in full quality if I need another version of the taster.
Can someone help me figure out, once I've captured my DV tapes tapes in RT Offline PAL Anamorphic, how to isolate and recapture only what's in my sequence - without disrupting the original offline capture scratch footage?
    A) Do I select my sequence and batch capture? - because Final Cut seems to want to batch capture everything I've already already taken in, ignoring the sequence I've selected.
    B) Do I have to use Media Manager to create new offline media, based only on what's in my sequence, and then take that into a new project file to batch capture only those clips? - and if so, how do I do that?
    C) Or is there some other way that I'm missing?
Thanks a lot for your assistance,
    S

    Hi Michael,
I think I see what you mean - so I'd do a media manage, copying my files and creating a new 'online' project, deleting unused capture scratch for that new project only? Because otherwise I'd be deleting all of the low quality capture scratch I want to keep for later projects!
I just gave it a go, seemed to work - the only issues I had were:
    A) The sequence setting wouldn't update to match the footage in the new project, magnifying my full resolution footage onto the smaller offline sequence, which - had I made zooms and swipes using basic motion keyframes - might have messed up the parameters.
    B) It only seemed I was able to batch capture in DV Pal Anamorphic, even though I can export and convert stuff using ProRes422, I seem to be unable to capture in this format - am I doing something wrong? Am I missing a codec?
Again, thanks a lot for the assistance!

  • Recapture in fcp6. please help.

I have offline files in my sequence that I have to recapture from tape. If I rightclick on the elements in the timeline and select "capture" it captures ALL the sourcematerial. Not only the material used in the sequence. How can I recapture only what is used in the timeline?

You need to use the media manager to 'Create Offline' and delete unused media from duplicated project... this will create a new project that you will be able to re-capture the media only needed for the timeline.

  • Recapture problem - Duplicate Item Filename

I forgot to choose Stereo Pair when capturing my clips in a project. FCP wont send audio clips to "Soundtrack Pro audio file project" if the clip is not captured as a Stereo Pair. If you try making an audio clip Stereo Pair in your sequence, it still wont work. Soundtrack Pro requires that your clip is captured as a Stereo Pair. I want to recapture my clips, but that is for some reason easier said than done.
I ctrl-clicked the clips in my browser, chose Make Offline, and then chose Move to trash. When I choose "Batch Capture" on my offline clips now, I get a window that says "Duplicate Item Filename". It says "A file in use by Final Cut has been found to use the specified filename. Enter a different filename and click Continue or choose one of the options listed below." The options that it lists are greyed out.
I found this problem as an archived thread here in the FCP forums, but the information there did not really help.
Should I just have removed the clips inside the Capture Scratch folder, instead of using the Make Offline feature?
I have emptied the trash, tried rebooting my Mac, repairing permissions, trashing my preferences. Nothing has helped. I am now trying to erase the free space on my media drive (which is as good as empty now).
Where is this filename information stored? Why does my FCP project think the offline clips still are on my media drive?
    Please help

    Thanks Andy.
I have done some more testing now. I made a backup of my project file, before I tried the "Make Offline" feature, and I also have backups of the project file inside my autosave vault.
When opening my project backup file, I get the usual message about offline clips and reconnecting. Batch Capture works great when clips are "missing". I get no message about duplicating item filename or anything like that.
The problem now, is that if I want to modify the clip settings of the missing/offline clips (and make them Stereo Pair), I can't because the clips are not offline but missing. If I check the source column in the browser, I can see it still thinks the clips are supposed to be on my media drive. To be able to modify clip settings, I have to make the clip offline. Once I do that, modifyinig the clip settings works, but when I try to batch capture a clip, I get the message about duplicating the item filename again.
    Man... this bugs me.
    UPDATE:
Wow.... I think I found the problem. Batch Capturing after making the clips offline works fine. This "duplicate item filename" message only appears AFTER I have modified the clip settings, making it Stereo Pair instead of dual mono. How annoying! This was my main goal. Recapturing the clips with Stereo Pair audio

  • Need to Recapture, Can Someone Advise?

Hello all, I've searched this topic but I'm not sure I understand some of your advice as it relates to my problem to I thought I'd better ask my specific question.
I captured about 4 hours of interview footage and stored it on a Lacie external HD and now the HD won't mount and I need to re-capture the footage. I used Capture Now (I'm new to this and perhaps this was not the best way?) and I've been told FCP can recapture the clips from each tape - there's 4). Can someone tell me how to do this? Is it done through Media Manager or Log and Capture? Does it just go through one tape at a time, fast forward to each clip and reconnect, etc?
Any help would be appreciated. The footage is interviews with family members that are all in their 90s and time is of the essence Thanks to all!

I'm hearing a lot of folks with LaCie drives are having problems because the FW port needs a solder... might open the drive and see if there's an obvious broken cable there... I'm having the same problems with my LaCie's and going to open them all up to see if I can't figure out what indeed to solder.

  • P2 media offline.

I've got a project with around 1.3TB of P2 Media. A clip which was a long clip and spanned at that, was made off line and deleted from the disc. I need to get it back and I have the original .mxf on tape back up, so I have the original files available. My question is how do i batch capture this one spanned clip again in some efficient manner. I'm on FCS2 FCp 6.01 and 10.4.10
I've searched in the archives but nothing like this comes up for me

    Mark,
I think if I'm understanding you correctly, you are saying that a quicktime movie, that was originally a .mxf file went offline, and is not on your scratch disk anymore. You say you do have it on a tape backup. Are you talking about DLT or some other type of data backup tape media? Or are you talking about a DVCPRO tape? If it is a data backup, you should be able to use the software that works with your tape backup system to find the file that you need. You will need to locate the entire "Contents" folder, as well as the "lastclip.txt" file, I'm pretty sure. Once you have those, you will need to copy that from the backup tape to a local hard drive. Once copied, you should be able to open FCP, go to log & transfer, and select that folder that contains the "Contents" and "lastclip.txt." Then you can look at the list of files there, and find the one with the same name as the quicktime file that went offline. (Make sure you have the right scratch disk set, and then drag that clip into the media window. It should create the new quicktime on your scratch disk. Then highlight your clip that is offline, right-click and select "reconnect." It should become online.
The key is making sure you get the right contents folder (if its a spanned clip, there very well be two separate "Contents" and "lastclip.txt" that you have to copy over,) setting the right scratch disk, and making sure its named the same file.
HOPEFULLY, when you originally did the log and transfer, you didn't change the clip name from the automatic name that the camera assigns the .mxf file. If so, you would have to try to find ever .mxf file from your project, and re-import them until you got the right clip.
If you did a backup to a DVCPRO/DVCPROHD tape, then its just a matter of putting that tape in the vtr, and recapturing from tape, just as you usually do with timecode. If the timecode didn't match on the tape to the original file timecode, this could be a problem though.
    Hope that helps,
    Chris

  • Recapture issues

    Hi to all,
I just lost all my media from a long conference. Was able to find the edit in th autosave vault but need to recapture the tapes, by using the batch capture command. I am having several issues, and could use a little guidance. i'ms sure this has been answere before, but can't find it....
-tapes have been captured using "capture now" and some don't have enough pre-roll available. I tried changing the pre-roll to 0 in the user preferences.... but it still has trouble finding the TC. Is there anything i can do about this.
-with one of the tapes, about an hour long (which is what is specified in the navigator window) hiting the batch capture command tells me it is 1 hour and 56 min long and will take 26gigs (DV). So when it reaches the end of the tape, i get an error message telling me there is one clip left to capture! the media start and end of the offline clip seem correct. any ideas.
and one last thing. If i ever do manage to recapture theese tapes, will i then be able to reconnect the multiclips that have been created for th edit?
    thanks for your time..
    tee.

    Several problems here...
Never use capture now. If you set ins and outs of all these clips and put in a tape number, you could easily get all this media back by just inserting the proper tape and making some clicks.
Most decks have to preroll. It's physically impossible to get the very beginning of a tape, which is why people put color bars for the first min.
Sometimes FCP will think there's a remaining clip to be captured. This happens a lot. Just click on the one clip you want to get and capture that instead of trying to capture the whole batch (which will include any clips FCP thinks are there). When you are done capturing a clip and it moves on to capture that phantom clip, be careful not to choose the wrong option and close that window or you will lose the clip you ust captured.

  • Workflow Question: 24p (Varicam) Masters, 29.97 down converts for offline

I know in part this question has been raised here before, and I know the Cinema Tools method for getting back to 24p... but I would like to discuss briefly the pending workflow on a project I am about to begin with someone who has tackled this before.
I am cutting a feature, shot on Varicam at 24p. The film has already been rough cut in FCP and I am inheriting the project to re-work the rough cut and "on-line" finish the film. The initial editor did not reverse telecine the clips before cutting, so all the clips and the timeline are in 29.97. I know I could finish the off-line using the DV footage, then reverse telecine the EDL to on-line back to the 24p HD masters, but there are a few other issues.
First, there is over 19 hours of original scenes that currently make up a 2 hr rough cut. This cut needs a pretty extensive re-edit before it's ready for the sound designer to step in, maybe 2-4 weeks of work. The FCP project has not been broken down by scenes, just master clips for each reel (yikes!). I am not confident in the audio that is on these DV tapes and I would prefer to work with the original HD source to finish the job, as the audio editing will fall mostly to me to accomplish. This project will also need extensive color timing as well. From a general workflow standpoint, I feel that if I had all the HD loaded, and re-organized by scene that I could work more efficiently to finish all the aspect of this film.
So the nuts and bolts of my question is this. Can I convert both the timeline AND the already logged master clips to 24p so that I can load in the HD as whole reel clips as they currently are logged and refer back to the timeline? I want to work from the existing timeline, but also have ALL the footage loaded in as HD 24p so I can sub clip by scene and rework the cut.
    Thanks in advance.

HD isn't as simple as SD...not by a long shot. With SD, we captured offline at 29.97, and then onlined at 29.97. The biggest thing to worry about was that our shoot masters were 29.97 NDF but stock footage was 29.97DF, and that tended to mess up EDLs for the online.
But then comes HD. 720p...1080i...1080p. 23.98, 24, 29.97, 59.94. So many options...things got really complex. Now with HD you really need to know what your deliverable is...even before you shoot. Because everything is geared toward getting that final master. You CAN proceed without knowing that, but then getting the proper master will require more hoop jumping. So, at this point, you need to figure out what you want to deliver and work towards that. 1080 23.98psf HDCAM? 720p 59.94 D5? 1080i 29.97 HDCAM? You have to figure this out.
Editing 24p footage from the Varicam (which translates to 23.98) at 29.97 DV was a poor choice. DVCPRO HD 720p24 isn't even twice the file size of DV. DV is 3.6MB/s, and DVCPRO HD 720p24 is 5.4MB/s...so editing native would have been the wise choice. But that is moot. Moving on.
When I edited a 16mm film...shot on 16mm, telecined to HDCAM at 23.98...I captured DV downconverts that ran at 29.97. I asked the post facility doing the online if I should do it at 29.97, or should I reverse telecine to 23.98...they said stick with 29.97, so I did. Then we changed post facilities and they said I really should have been editing at 23.98...because I have now made the online rather tricky. But this is what they had me do. Export an EDL of the 29.97 timeline. Use Cinema Tools to convert that from a 30fps EDL to a 24fps EDL. Then give them this and the final project. They were able to rebuild the cut, with some issues where I had speed changes, but they did it.
So what you need to do now, is find the place that will be doing the online, and get someone there to get this thing where it needs to be. It isn't as simple as recapturing at 29.97 or 59.94. The footage was shot at 59.94, but with flags set to make it 23.98 when captured. If you had a Kona or Decklink capture card, you could capture it at 59.94, but that format won't match up with the 29.97 EDL...different time base. And you cannot capture 59.94 as 29.97...not unless the footag was flagged in the camera as 720p30.
This is a very complex situation and I have barely scratched the surface. THis is why you need help from an HD expert, preferrably someone from the post facility where you will be doing the online.
    Shane
