One giant clip to be edited down

I have a HUGE raw footage clip that has over 100 scenes in it and over 45 minutes long.  I want to be able to create individual clips for each scene.  Right now I am editing it in the source window and making in and out points for each clip.  I have only done 10 clips and I am already about to go crazy.  Is there an easier way to cut my large movie into smaller clips?
Thanks

Hi,
Hmmm...so you are basically going from source monitor in out points to project panel and making subclips , renaming and dragging them down to timeline ?
What you're doing in essence is making what used to be called a " print " in film...getting the good stuff out of the whole thing...
Then you'll use THAT stuff to make a rough or final cut...
Maybe do this instead....make several sequences called " print1-1st-10minutes", "print2-2nd-10minutes", print3-3rd-10minutes, etc ....
Then you'll also have a sequence called "roughcut"....( eventually you will take the best parts of the prints and put into roughcut sequence...)
Instead of making subclips ( where you have no handles to expand the video toward head or tail....for minor adjustments later )...just drag the in out points to your "PRINT" sequences, without renaming....
Since it's in 10 min sections it won't seem quite so retarded....tedious...etc...the timecodes can be your " filenames" in essence...no need for subclips.
As you take the "PRINT" sequence stuff into your "roughcut" sequence raise that video clip up one level of video on the timeline of the "PRINT" timeline..so you know visually what you've USED ....dont have to scrub through the whole thing to find new stuff...easy to see what you moved into "roughcut" just by looking at the video tracks...  video 2 is used already, video 1 is not used yet...

  • Can't import hourlong clip - how to edit down?

I was going to import an hour long clip but apparently I can't import anything over 10 minutes. So, how do I edit the video into manageable segments without having to forkout for Final Cut Pro as recommended on the pop up?
I only want a bit of shareware...
    thanks

You should still be capable of importing a lengthy video - iMovie just has a tendency (I don't know why) to break up long shots into 10 minutes clips that are still useable. Just drag all of the segments of the clip into the timeline - it should still play continuously without hiccups - just as it would had you split a video clip at the playhead.
If there are a great many segments, you can select them all (or a select number of them simultaneously) and bring them down into the timeline together in one shot.

  • Live effects such as Drop shadow and blurs convert to flatten images with giant clipping masks preventing edits?

Without reason and at great costs, live effects convert to unusable web style graphics. This is not photoshop. Is adobe moving to kill Illustrator in favor of PhotoShop style web graphics? Suddenly every time I open a template the drop shadow or Gaussian blur has been converted to transparent overlay with a giant opacity mask applied. In trying to repair the damage by releasing the opacity mask the whole graphic jumps to a black square? Not all of the effects do this, just newer templates. I first thought because a fellow artist creates her graphics in RGB work space that this was the cause. It is not. Now randomly this happens. What am I doing wrong that causes this.

No they are ones my company creates for products we carry. We print on the items. I need to center logos on the items and not the items and the shadow. I also need to update the items as time goes by. It used to be as simple as open the file and make the needed changes. Now I have to start from scratch on the items that self convert. Any time a computer file self converts to a different type of file you have a problem. Only certain templates have morphed like this. I'm sure it's something I'm not catching.

  • I have been trying to create a movie from a project that is primarily stills and one video clip.  I cannot successfully create the movie without iMovie shutting down unexpectedly.  Any ideas for the cause of the problem?

I am getting an unexpected shut down of iMovie when I try to share a movie from a project that is made up of still pictures, one video clip and music.  Have tried to create the movie several times with different formats and continue to get the message.  When I removed all music I was able to create the movie without a problem but when I added the music back, I was unable to create the movie.  I'm using iMoive 11' version 9.0.9
    Thanks.
    Bill

I'm no expert in iMovie, but I've found that processing memory (as well as sheer hard disk space for the project to 'turn around in') can be a big issue with constructing, editing, and distilling projects in iMovie. I've improved the success by moving 2gb of image files off to an external drive, but only really got moving again on an hour-long project by doubling RAM and again freeing up h/d space.
Some tunes are also an issue, but if you can see it in the iTunes list to place in your project, it should work okay... Does the project run with any other piece of music, or does just that one tune mess it up?
    Good luck,
    Laura

Multiple motion edits and opacity edits were made. When project manager moved the project, the actual video content of 0002.MTS to 0005.MTS was missing(source clips are still there but they were playing and working as part of that 0001.MTS timeline clip before). Those parts of the 0001.MTS clip in the timeline were Danger Striped and can be relinked but now have no edits anymore. The edits are apparently only linked with the original 0001.MTS source clip but extend beyond the actual range of the actual source clip. At the time I thought it was weird that premiere displayed the whole string of clips as one (with one name and no breaks) but it all works in the original project file but cannot be transferred to another location without multiple clips showing Danger Stripes.I need to move it and preserve the dozens of motion and opacity edits linked to the apparently oversized timeline clip. HELP!! any ideas?
I did not nest any clips or sequences, premiere just seemed to combine the clips under one name when I moved them to timeline.
    I am using CS5.

    Hi Stephen, thanx...
Yes, we are talking about FCP X...this is the thing:
I worked on a project a few days ago and went to share - export movie.
Today, i opened the FCP again, to make some changes, and when i enter to the project, it shows me as one big clip.....i dont see it says compound clip....and i tried anyways pressing break appart clips...but nothing....could it be that i made it compound before exporting it..? if so how can i recover the un-compound version >?
I tried to import the saved .mov file, but it opens the same....as one long clip...
    Pls help...thanx.

  • IMovie 08 to 09 import problem - one big clip

I had a lot of projects in iMovie 08 and they have appeared ok in 09 but all seem to have been imported as just as one large clip instead individual clips. This means that re-editing is very difficult and defeats the object of importing iMovie 08 projects rather than completed videos. Does anyone know of a way to break the project back down into its original clips?

YOu are in "Project Library" view. If you pick a project and click on "Edit Project", you will see the individual clips you are used to.
The "Project Library" view is basically eye-candy so you can quickly find your projects.

  • How do I sync multiple audio clips to one video clip?

I have video (with stereo audio from a camera mic), and for each take, there are also four additional mono audio tracks that line up with it. It was footage shot outdoors in the city, so I guess the filmmakers just wanted to have as many options for sound mixing as possible given how much background noise there would be. I have tried selecting the video clip and the four audio clips at once and selecting "synchronize clips," but it doesn't work. It spits out a synchronized clip that seems to have converted two of the mono tracks into one stereo track... and then disregarded the remaining two mono tracks. It's a mess. It's likely someone else will fine tune the audio once I'm done cutting the video together... but I'd like to get all the audio tracks properly synced from the start. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Do you mean manual syncing? I've been reading this thread about workaround, which aren't working for me: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/21236
But the question they are asking is the same one I am asking. Isn't this a typical situation, having multiple mics for one camera? For example, if someone filmed a concert with one camera but used both the camera audio, and ambient mic, and a mix from the board, then that would be 3 audio tracks with 1 video track. I'm in a similar situation, and I'm finding it hard to believe that FCPX isn't equipped to edit this way. There must be some way to get one video clip (with reference audio) to sync with four audio tracks.

  • Importing tape into Imovie 11. How do I import all the clips as one long clip?

How do I import all the clips as one long clip? I have 45 min of footage and I want it as one long take I can edit in Final Cut ProX. When I import, all the clips are split up when the scene cuts. I just want the 45 min in one long video.

iMovie will import the tape as if it is direct from the camera. It will sense the scene breaks and put all the clips in chronological order.
If you want to import it as one long clip, I suggest you load the tape into the app that you edited the tape with. Then export it out as a QuickTime movie in the DV codec. You can import this MOV file into FCPX or iMovie.

  • How do you link two audio clips to one video clip?

    Hi guys,
I want to think multiple audio clips to one video clip and aint know how to do it! I found this page on Adobe knowledge base:-

It says you can do it but I don't think it explains how? Can anyone provide me with the simple steps required to link two audio clips to one video clip? Many thanks.

I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (e.g. .m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing), all I want QuickTime to do is export the file in a compressed format. Bizzarely, if I shutdown and open QuickTime many times I can occasionally export a clip as another format (maybe one in 10 times). I have seen that other users have had a similar problem after clipping files in QuickTime but this seems to be a slightly different bug in that all I do is open the file and then try and export the file as is - either way, this is a very annoying bug

@Z_B-B, thank you for taking the time to respond to my cry for help. However, the link you supplied does not address the problem: I am not trying to export from Final Cut Pro to QuickTime, I am trying to export from QuickTime to the rest of the world (like people's iPhones and Ipads) in .m4v format (so I am not emailing my freinds such huge files).
If I were to spend hundreds of Dollars on a copy of Final Pro I could export directly from there and not have to bother with QuickTime, but I do not take enough video clips to justify the cost. I must say that I never had any of these problems before I decided to switch from Snow Leopard to Mountai Lion.

  • Premerie Pro CC - have sound on timeline, yet when I export file i am missing sound in one tiny clip. Can I be related to working with Merged clips?

    Hello Premerie Pro CC community,
I need help, I am working with merged clips (the video footage shoot with a DSLR and different audio recorders). I have a timeline in premerie with sound all finished. Everything was fine until I when and fine tuned some of the audio, just added key frames to correct and now when I export my sequence I am missing sound in one little clip of the entire mov.
Does it have to do with sound and editing with a merged clip?
I have tried to export in several different settings and still the same result, and when I look at my timeline the sound is all there.
I have until the end of Monday to figure what I have done incorrect
    thanks

In case it is a phase problem, try adding fill left effect to the faulty clip.

  • Group Two Adjacent Clips Into One Single Clip?

It seems like there ought to be an easy way to do this, but I can't seem to find it.
I'd like to take two (AV) clips that are adjacent on the time line, and group/merge/copy (not sure what term to use) them together into one single clip. That so that I can then apply a single continuous movement, rotation, opacity changes, and so forth to the resulting single clip.
If any of you are familiar with The audio-editing program called Digital Performer, what I'm looking for would be the AV analogy with Performer's "Merge Soundbites" operation.
Anybody know how to do that?
    Thanks folks!

Yes, nesting is the answer. select the clips you want to nest go to Sequence / Nest items / give it a name and there you'll got your nested sequence as a separate file in the browser.
What a coincidence! I just nested a series of stills in order to be able to animate their size over time.

  • In imovie 09 can you make one continuous clip

in imovie 09 can you make one continuous clip
canu u download video in HDV to imovie 06 from a    SONY HDR-Fx 7 video camera as one clip

No. iMovie 09 (and 11) is designed to import movies from camcorders. Every time it detects a start/stop it will make a different clip. They will be in chronlogical order, rather than edited order.
If you still have iMovie 06, you can load the tape there as one continuous clip. Then EXPORT USING QUICKTIME choosing HDV as your codec. This will produce an MOV file that iMovie 09 or 11 can read, and which will be in the edited order.

  • Merging video clips -- join through edit

I was trying to solidify a video that is composed of numerous smaller parts by using the "Join through edit" feature. I am able to do it from time to time, but generally it is grayed out. Does this have anything to do with the way that the files are accessed, or the nature of the video itself?
Not sure why I can do it sometimes and not others. Working with 20 short clips was fine when I wanted to edit them one by one, but now that I'm done I wanted to merge them into a single longer clip.

Are you sure you want to "join through edit"? Perhaps you are wanting to nest your clips?
A through edit is an edit added to a continuous piece of media. By default, FCP will display red triangles on either side of the edit. When you select the edit point (not the clip), you can select "join through edit" (KB shortcut = delete). If the option does not show up (is grayed out), then the two adjoining clips are not part of continuous timecode within the same master clip.
But it sounds like you want to create one long "clip" in your timeline from all the little clips. Select all the clips you want to include and Sequence -> Nest Items (shortcut = opt-C)
