Online Essbase backup

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me the how do i do the online essbase backup.
IF yes how and can i take backup of database while calculations are executing....
Regards,
Mink

Yes, I've had similar environments. On larger cubes you don't often get savings because the "changed files" equals the "entire database" every day, at least for environments where time is dense. Robocopy is good, I've used it almost everywhere (although they are unrelated, that's why I tried RoboTask in the first place).
The staging area I use is only 3 copies of each database, but that's arbitrary (the batch job supports grandfather/father/son schemes of up to 9 levels, plus any number of "type" qualifiers -- like daily, weekly, special, deep archive, etc...). With restoration just a double-click (and about 15 minutes) away at any point for any "stored" backup. So we also have no need to go to tape unless it's a true D/R.
I don't even have to change anything for new production apps, it's part of the shell script that runs the data load as a single command call (the shell also sends email when finished -- if the script has the meta-tags for it), and creates a daily log of begin/end entries for each process.
The real key is using a standard framework -- which is like skinning cats so there's no point in saying one is ideal or better than another. On the detail level however, being able to fit a new piece into the framework can definitely be done better or worse. :)
To me, the real proof came in our last D/R test (I know, I talk about it often enough) -- but what I didn't say was that *I* didn't even do the recovery. The Junior admin did it with about 3 months of experience in essbase. I was officially dead on the site and only took notes. That tells a lot about system recoverability.

in note 534729 is nothing about ORA-03135: connection lost contact only error ORA-03114 which refer to the note 335199 and in this note in nothing about ORA-03114 I want to say two things: this two oracle errors (ORA-03135 and ORA-03114) are not in alertSID.log on db server or in syslog on backup server. This error are only reported from brbackup which is running on backup server which is "client side". We don't have problem with connection from work processes on all instances to db server, we have only problem with brbackup which lost connection after split disk system. Hi,
I am trying to run an online backup of oracle through db13 to disk on netweaver 710, however, there is no option to set the backup to disk that I can see.  Is there any parameters that needs to be set in order for this to run, or am I missing something obvious?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Is there anything related with the expiration period as i had made changes withthat too.
Kindly suggest what needs to be done?
    Regards,
    Radeesh V

    Hi Radeesh,
    Pls check the following
1)The file to be backed up cannot be read. this can be due to hardware problems on the disk on which the file is stored.
2)The file to be backed up cannot be written to the volume. this can be due to hardware problems with the volume or the backup device.
3)The backup device is not responding, for example if no volume (tape) was inserted in the backup device.
    4) The input or output file cannot be opened. The operating system user is experiencing authorization problems.
    5) The physical end of the tape was reached. However, since a parallel backup is performed or the option -c force was used, cpio cannot request a cpio continuation volume. The tape size (parameter tape_size) must be reduced.
    Hope this is useful
    Regards
    Umesh

  • Essbase Backup

Is this the correct forum to post Essbase questions?
We are using Begin Archive and End Archive (EssCmd) to run file system backups on Essbase applications and databases. We've run into a problem ending the archive. We think it is a conflict with a user running a process. We are looking at embedding it in Java with the API and error trapping. Is there a method that works using only Maxl or EssCmd scripts?

    Hi,
We are using the following steps for back up for around 35 databases in version 7.1
    1.     Login to server.
    2.     Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command
    3.     Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command for all 35 db
    4.     Selecting individual appname and dbname.
    5.     Export data for selected app and db
    6.     Unload Application
    7.     Enable Login for that selected Database.
But we are facing problem like even though all the users are logged out and by the time it selects a particular app and db and exports, if any other user request access to some other app name or database, Essbase allows the complete read/write access for the same. Due to which we get dbname.esm file getting locked out and corrupted.
To avoid the users to have any write mode capability, can we use BEGINARCHIVE and ENDARCHIVE commands?
What I have thought will be the changed steps after we add these 2 commands-
    1. Login to AZ18NT169 server.
    2. Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command.
    3. Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command.
    4. Beginarchive for each db
    5. Selecting individual appname and dbname
    6. Exporting data for that selected app name and dbname.
    7. Unload Application (Stops the specified application)
    8. EndArchive for each db
    9. Enable Login for that selected Database.
Please let me know if I can achieve my goal of making sure that db is completely in read only mode after we log out all users and if any users request access it will be only read only?
    Appreciate your help in advance.
    Thanks,
    Richa

  • What is the best online cloud backup?

I've had carbonate when I had windows laptops, now I'm new to mac and want to back up all of my documents, particularly photos.
I've heard about problems restoring photos when using carbonate on a mac. I'm prepared to pay but I need a cloud backup service that will restore to a mac or windows laptop, does anyone have any good suggestions? Photos are my priority.
I want to get it sorted quickly. Due to theft/breakage cloud storage has saved me two times in as many years so I'm keen to get it again.
    Thanks!

I doubt it is the best but I use Mozy. They have the following information regarding iPhoto. http://support.mozy.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/How-does-Mozy-backup-and-restore-iPho to-and-Aperture-Libraries
Another popular option for online backups is CrashPlan. http://www.code42.com/crashplan/
They also have some information specific to iPhoto. http://support.mozy.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/How-does-Mozy-backup-and-restore-iPho to-and-Aperture-Libraries
My iPhoto Library is very small -- only around 1.6GB and Mozy works for me but you are likely to get some input here about online backup services not being functional or practical for iPhoto libraries.

  • Storing Multiple Essbase Backups

    Hello,
We currently run a nightly backup using the MaxL script below. Due to a change in business practices, we now need to save mulitple days worth of backups instead of writing over the previous night's backup, as we do in this script. Does anyone know of a way to include today's date in the name of the file? Right now we have it named as Plan1BkupLv0.txt but I would like it to read "Date"Plan1BkupLv0.txt, where "Date" represents the date the backup is run. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

    Hi GlennS,
Thank you so much for the response. I am not versed in MaxL or batch scripts so the easier, the better for me. I am just trying to adjust scripts that consultants wrote during our Hyperion implementation. Below is what I now have for the batch script after adding your suggested changes and is not creating the mulitple files. Would you have a suggestion as to what I have done wrong and how to fix it? Thanks again!

  • Automate Application & Essbase Backup

    Hi Gurus
We have done lots of things on different topics in this forum but one thing which i feel lack is Backup & Recovery Procedures. How can we automate Application & Db Backup for Data forms. Anyone have implemented it or have some clue then pls let it share on this forum.
    Thanks in advance
    SNK

For the planning application then I would take a backup of the schema/db, this can be automated and done by your dba.
For essbase then different backup options are outlined in :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_backup_recovery/launch.html
It all depends on your backup method to how it would be automated.

  • Encrypted Essbase Backup

    HI
Currently we are taking backup of essbase into .dat or .txt file...but both file can be changed. As a result, it will loose the security of the backup. Kindly let me know how can i get secure backup from essbase?
    Thanks

Text files are not encrypted, regardless of extension, or even no extension.
Glenn pointed out that the binary files that are Essbase's data on disk are already encrypted.
If this is a BSO database, you could use DATAEXPORT's bin format to give you a measure of encryption, or at least the inability to read an export file in a text editor and see numbers.
Have you looked at real encryption tools? A quick search on the web turns up this Pretty Good Privacy page:
    http://www.cryptography.org/getpgp.htm
I am no cryptologist, to put it mildly, so I think the above is just a starting point.
Surely your IT department does this on a regular basis with other data types -- perhaps they would be a resource to turn to?

  • Recommended online (offsite) backup service for Leopard?

I have searched the Apple Discussions and have only seen mention of Mozy. Does anyone know of any other good online backups? I have an external HD backup but want an OFFsite backup as well.
    Thanks!

    Thanks, but...for instance:
I just signed up for a trial version of dot mac. I have done a sync with my idisk to backup contacts, mail accounts, etc, but don't see anything on my idisk.
This doesn't make paying for dot mac sound that good to me. if i am using it as an offsite backup solution i do need access to my data and if i can't see it that is not good!
I assume these problems are because I am not using the application correctly. Any help appreciated...

  • Online Storage/Backup

My laptop (less than a year old) died last Sunday night! I had over 4000 pictures on there and now they are "lost" because the hard drive was "fried".
I have had Photoshop since 2008, I did purchase online backup storage. How do I retrieve my images that I had on Photoshop???
    Please help!
    Thanks so much!

You should not rely on cloud as a back up of your music FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup
You should Back up to an external drive.
If you have over 25k, you could use Amazon cloud.

  • Online storage/backup and Sync to several systems  - Elements 10

I have paid my money and eagerly await arrival of Elements 10 with the postman
I was enthused to buy it for some of the editing features which are better than v7 i had.
I was even more excited to know all my woes and hates of Google Picasa online storage and syncing were going away!!!!!
    Or so I thought
I had not realised that as I work for an American company I was reading the American website and for some unfair reason they get options to buy more than 2gb storage and they get syncing of online to various PCs and backups and goodness knows what else; while we non-US poor souls in the wastelands get what seems like almost nothing
I know I can't use my 80gbs of Google Space. I have 50Gb on Box.Net that was free because I bought a HP Touchpad (long live WebOS as its awesome compared to the rubbish that is Android my new company phone runs).... sorry I'm digressing...... the Box.Net doesn't have any syncing and i know nothing of its security, but maybe its an option.
    So, I can't be the only working father in the world who wants;
to use his company laptop as the onboarding for all the cameras
then to seemlessly have a secure backup made somewhere in the cloud  and possibly to my 2TB NAS as well?
or  a copy of everything uploaded to online web album but as full size photos (one good thing about Google) which would replace the Backup need maybe?
now the tricky bit, I then want my wifes PC and 2 others used by my children to be able to view (not edit or delete) all our photos, probably the online set synced to their PCs
then i want to be able to see them also from the touchpad
finally I want to be able to 'share' some albums/photos to the rellies and Facebook
As my wife would say "surely it's not to much to ask that this stuff just does what we want?"
How does everyone else cope if we are hoest that I am hopeless as manual backups etc.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
ps. i had thought to try registering my new software with a new email address and giving US address etc.......... would that get me the extras/

    stevew218 a écrit:
Ah... as per my 1st post, I am a new user to Elements.    Apologies,  I have been approaching this from the wrong direction!   I have checked back on my original XP disk and Elements catalog, and it appears that when I set up the original catalog against my existing pics it did not include any duplicate files, therefore the Backup\Restore is correct, it is the original cataloging of my pictures that did not work as expected.     Do I have to do anything specific to get the catalog to include duplicate file names?
    Sorry for the misdirection
    Steve
    Steve,
The basic rule of database management is to forbid duplicates.
In the case of the Organizer, that would mean changing one of the two above criteria (date daken or file size in kB). That would be possible outside of the Organizer by using external tools, but the problem is that you don't know which files are concerned...
Now that you have restored your catalog in your new catalog, a theoretical solution would be to get back to the old catalog, and use the organizer to delete all the files in the catalog. The remaining ones would be the duplicates. Creating a new empy catalog and importing the remaining files would recover all duplicates. You could then restore on the new PC.
    There are still two problems:
    - You can't delete a big number of files at the same time? You'd have to delete by small batches
    - You'll have all your duplicates in your new PC, but you still won't be able to include them in the main catalog even you have now a special catalog with only the duplicates.
So, the final question may be : why do you want to keep duplicates? You can examine the duplicates catalog and see if they are really necessary. Maybe you can live with two different catalogs.
