Only 39GB available on 300GB drive, but only 31GB being used...

Hello.
I have an old 300GB hard drive from the old white iBook G4 lap top.
I used it as an external drive.
When i Get Info on this drive from my Power Mac G5 quad, it reads: capacity 232.76GB, available 39.15GB, used 193.61GB
When i Get Info on this drive from my Mac Air....................it reads: capacity 249.93GB, available 42.04GB, used 207.89GB
That is a bit confusing, though i don't see it as too much of an issue.
My issue it that there are only 3 folders on this hard drive which total about 30GB only.
(One computer (G5) says that the 3 folders add up to a total of 31.79GB, and the other computer (Mac Air) says that the 3 folders add up to a total of 29.65GB)
Now, regardless of this discrepancy (which i do want to find out why), I should still have at least 198GB available on this HD.
So, i launched Omni Disk Sweeper, and it says that 193.6GB are used on this HD (on the "Drive List" window before I do the actual sweep), and after I sweep this drive, it says that only 27.7GB are used on this drive, and it shows the breakdown of the 3 folders on this drive.
I'm just wondering how I'm using 193GB on this drive.
Any thoughts?
Thank you!!!

Hello, the dicrepency between the to is due to apple switching to 1K = 1,000 Bytes instead of the old 1K = 1,024 Bytes... as I recall they changed it in 10.6.x
OK, now the missing GBs.
We either have hidden folders/files on the drive and/or Permissions on them betond your right's.
See WZZZ's post here on how to run ODS in root mode...
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2703600?start=0&tstart=0
Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities). Copy the following line and paste it directly into the Terminal window, then type Return:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Enter your admin password when prompted (it will not echo on the screen), and type Return.
This should open OmniDiskSweeper's "Drive List" window. Click inside it and then sweep your HD as you did before. This time OmniDiskSweeper should run with "root" privileges - see what you get this way.

Iphone 4 keeps restarting every 3 min but only when being used, it doesn't matter what I do with it, it has to restart itself during usage, it's so annoying. I have restored but still no luck, currently trying to update the software once I've finished downloading it but I know it will keep restarting when connected to itunes.
Anyways when I do decided to bring it to the apple store would I need to bring the receipt with me?
because i dont have it anymore only the phone, box charger and usb
    thanks

No. The warranty is tied to the device, not the individual & all iphone 4's are still under warranty.

Just purchased a USB Super Drive but unsure how to use it - o instructions provided apart from how to eject a cd.  Each time I put in a cd it just ejects it again. Can anyone help.

USB is rarely bootable under Mac OS X and PowerPC Macs.   Get a Firewire Superdrive from http://www.macsales.com/ if your intent is to boot the machine.   PPC, which is PowerPC, indicates the Mac predates 2006.

  • Data plan used if MiFi connected but not actively being used?

If computer is on overnight but not in use, meaning MiFi connected, with that use up my data plan? Or does it use up with "active" use only? I'm sharing internet with other people so I'm not sure my data plan is being used on purpose or just getting eaten up while we are all asleep? I'm already maxed with 3 weeks to go!!!

As long as you have devices connected to the MiFi there is always a risk that those devices will consume data behind the scenes without your knowledge.  This is how network connected devices work, they are constantly "in use" while connected.  Computers, smart phones and any kind of internet connected devices are constantly backing up content, looking for updates and talking to other network devices.  It has nothing to do with your active participation and all internet communication is held against you on your data plan.
The only way to completely stop data usage is to turn off your MiFi when it is not needed.  This is a common safe practice that you should start using when on a metered data plan.  MiFis are not intended to be left on 24x7 anyways, frequent reboots will help ensure the device stays in proper working order and increase the longevity of its life.
Verizon does provide everyone with a data log.  The data log will provide you with time stamps and the amounts that are consumed at those times.  It should be easy to see when your biggest spikes of consumption are.  Isolate what devices are online during those times and what may have been going on and you can start to build a picture of where the problem lies.
To truly see the network traffic in terms of specific applications, web services or devices you need to find and install network monitors.  Network monitors come in a variety of applications so you need to find and build a monitoring system that fits your environment.  Considering you have other people connected to your MiFi it would not be uncommon for each of you to install a separate monitor specific to those machines.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • HT4848 Is it possible to partition an external hard drive that is already being used for Time Machine backups without it being erased?

I'm want to use my current external hard drive, which I use for Time Machine Backup, as a recovery disk for Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2. From what I have read, the recovery disk assistant will erase all data on the external drive unless it is partitioned. Can I partition my current backup drive without erasing it, even though it is already being used for Time Machine?

It's very simple to test.  Turn off your computer.  Have your time machine backup plugged in.  Hold option and turn it on, keeping option held.  Do you see your time machine drive?  If so, select it and press enter. You'll end up in recovery.  If it works, there you go.  Then just click the apple and restart to get back to your regular desktop.  Then you'll know for when you're ready to do the deed.
    Edit...
I'm not sure if time machine will think it's an entirely different computer, though, when a hard drive changed, making an actual restore not doable.  Either way, you could still reinstall mt lion fresh and then just migrate after, skipping the need for SL.

  • Mail wont send, citing SSL problems, but no SSL being used

    Hi
Mail has suddenly stopped sending mail on my SMTP account. I receive the error:
"Mail was unable to connect to server  using SSL on the default ports. Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct."
Problem is, SSL is not set for this server and never was. SSL is NOT checked on the account settings and never was.I have had extensive support from the service provider and it is clear the problem is not on their side. Testing with Sparrow Lite on the same server, using the same account settings, works perfectly.
Accounts are shown as 'Offline' and selecting 'Take accounts online' has no effect at all. Incoming Mail (POP3) is fine and unaffected.
I have fixed permissions, reset permissons and ACLs, and tried an alternate SMTP sever (which worked fine).
Any ideas on what else I can try?
    Thanks!

Delete the server from the list of outgoing mail servers, then add it back. Any change?

Time Machine makes local snapshots in all portable Macs with Lion or Mountain Lion. They are made in the internal drive and they are removed when your hard disk gets full, so you don't have to worry about it.
If you want to delete them, turn off Time Machine and turn it on every time you want to make a backup. You can also turn them off manually without having to turn off Time Machine, or you can delete those local snapshots > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html

  • Bought MacAir 2 weeks ago. Loaded Parallels; Windows 7 Pro; Office 10. Created a ss but defaults to Office 11 making it impossible to save on an external drive, but worst is my external drive now asks to be formatted (losing all my personal files)

As stated above. So despite attempting to run a parallel windows system it seems like everything's defaulted to Apple. I've tried uninstalling Office 2011 (trash), but then I can't use save an Office 2010 file without it. So, I have to reverse that. Not sure whether I should uninstall the whole lot and try again.
But I have an even worse problem: My external hard drive (Samsung) will not now work and it contains all my personal and work files, but more importantly all my tax files that I need as a Brit expat. It now asks me to format the drive on the Mac or my work PC. Presumably this will mean I lose all my data.
I'm totally underwhelmed and now wished I had never bought the computer because it will cause me huge problems if I have lost my data.

Step 6: Here is where I need help/advice – can I remove the Bootcamp partition on my internal drive now?
To answer my own question in Step 6 above, no, or at least I haven't found a way yet...
Here's what I've done so far:
Used the Bootcamp Assistant to remove the bootcamp partition on my internal drive.
Booted the system with the option (alt) key pressed down and now there was NO Windows drive to choose.
Therefore I used the Bootcamp Assistant to install Windows back onto my internal drive (including installing Bootcamp drivers in the Windows environment). This time I chose the minimum partition of 20GB for the Windows installation on the internal drive.
Booted into the new Windows on the internal drive and installed the drivers for my Thunderbolt drive.
Restarted with the option (alt) key pressed down, chose the Windows drive, but Windows Boot Manager still didn't pop up to allow me to choose the Windows installation on the external Thunderbolt drive.
Booted from the Windows DVD and chose Repair.
Restarted with the option (alt) key pressed down, chose the Windows drive, and now Windows Boot Manager finally popped up, which allowed me to choose the Windows installation on the external Thunderbolt drive again, phew!
So, I can run Windows 7 from the external Thunderbolt drive, but I have to use 20GB of my internal drive for a Windows installation I'll never use. Not the best solution, but at least I've saved 30GB of space compared to my previous Bootcamp partition - and I now have enough space to install the Windows 7 software I need on the external Thunderbolt drive...

  • Drive no longer being used by time machine: delete some files?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write.  Nope.  Tried holding down the option key.  Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it.
Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

    nowsthetime wrote:
It wasnt a dedicated backup and  there's other material on it that I need to keep.
That's a problem (as you've discovered).  Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for details.
Aha!  Just found THIS. I'll post if it works. http://www.celiamania.com/wordpress/?p=1038
That will let you delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items.
If you don't have room to copy the "other" stuff elsewhere while you erase the disk, you can delete the Backups.backupdb folder.  Emptying the trash will take a very long time, and may give you permissions and/or locked file problems.  If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

I have iMovie 09. I just erased my external hard drive, but it is still formatted for the mac. However, iMovie will not recognize the hard drive. It shows the only hard drive available is the computers. How do I get the external hard drive to show up?

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • I backed up with an external drive, but it only backed up part, do I erase the complete back up and start again?

My system is OS 10.8.5 Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, storage available 375 GB out of 500 GB. Yesterday I tried to back up with the Seagate Backup Plus Drive with 1.5 TB using the Time Machine. The backup started, said it would take 3 hours, but ended at 2 hours when the computer went to sleep when I had to leave the desk. When reviewing "About this Mac",it appears under Macintosh HD the amount of GB for Audio 20.53GB, Movie18.66 GB, Photo 4.56 GB, Apps 11.92 GB, Backups zero KB, Other 64.54 GB on the same menu below, appears the External Seagate Back up plus but with Zero KB on Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, Backups 74.48 GB, zero KB in Other zero KB.I believe that for some reason the back up was not finished complete and only copied 74.48 GB. My question is how do I erase this and start over so I can have a complete first back up with everything. If I did something wrong, I do not get where it was. Thank you so much.

You let the computer go to sleep. When it did then so did the backup drive. The first bit of advice is do not use the software provided with the Seagate backup drive. The second bit of advice is to completely re-partition and format the drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Finally, get a good backup utility to incrementally update the clone.

    Thanks

You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed.
