OPC communication loss

I have a pretty simple VI that I've written that will allow data acquisition from a remote device that talks via OPC.  While initially I'm okay I loose communication, the patter seems repeatable.  I have tried some techniques with buffering but I'm not convinced this is the issue.  After I stop and restart the VI communication resumes.  I've also used server explorer but it seems to loose communication as well.  The vendor has supplied a sample OPC client and it seems to be fine.  What can I do to solve this problem?
Thanks,

thanks for the response, i didn't realize they weren't included.
The timing seems to be consistently timing out at 80 min.  It was suggested that I just put an internal timer in to stop the VI and restart but it seems to be circumventing the issue.  Also I think it will prevent me from programatically controling the instrument as there is a sequence of commands that must be given.
Any thoughts on that?
Thanks,

  • FieldPointOPC2.exe Driver & Communication Loss

    Background/Environment:
Currently I have a legacy hardware system utilizing older FieldPoint FP-1600 ethernet modules with a couple of Discrete Input & Output modules.  I run a custom desktop Visual C++ application which connects to the FieldPoint array through Ethernet via OPC server through the FieldPointOPC2.exe driver.  The application doesn't run LabView or any other auxillary NI software to perform its work.  The desktop computer (HP Proliant DL380 G4) was originally running Windows 2000 and Field Point Explorer to handle configuration.  The computer was replaced with a HP Proliant DL380 G7 server running Windows Server 2008 SP1.  FieldPointExplorer was replaced with MAX 4.1, the application updated for Visual Studio 2008, and we currently still use the FieldPointOPC2.exe driver (version 4.0.1.15).  I believe the driver may be configured to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 but not certain.  I am not certain what firmware level is running on the FP-1600 but is not likely to be the latest.  No NI additional services are running besides NI Configuration Manager.
    Problem/Questions:
The application seems to have brief periods where a loss of communication to the OPC server occurs.  I suspect this because inputs will seemingly all change state creating warnings/alerts in our application, but very quickly will return to normal operation as if nothing was ever wrong.  The issue occurs very rarely and randomly (maybe once/week) although the system runs almost 24x7 6-days per week.  Network hardware all appears to be ok including cabling.  Is 4.0.1.15 the latest driver version for FieldPointOPC2.exe?  Other forum posts suggest a version 5 may be available but I've had no luck locating it in the online driver packages.
Outside of the random loss of communication, I also experience an occasional application exception which I believe may also be tied to the FieldPointOPC2 driver:
Updating the hardware is not readily an option due to funding issues and I'm hesistant to update FP1600 firmware considering their age, availability, and non-supported status from NI.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I found the following additional information regarding intermittent communication loss for FP-1600 modules from http://www.ni.com/white-paper/4368/en
The referenced links in the white-paper for checking and obtaining firmware are no longer valid however.  I found version 502 available elsewhere on the NI site to try.    The FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module Diagnostic Utility is also unavailable...
    FieldPoint Explorer and Firmware Versions
Most Common Symptom: Intermittent Loss of Communication
National Instruments recommends that at a minimum, firmware revision 0200 be used with the FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module, but it is a good idea to always use the latest available firmware. . For instructions on how to check the current firmware revision, please see our KnowledgeBase entry on Determining the Firmware Revision of Network Modules. To update to the most current release of the FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module firmware, please see our KnoweldgeBase entry on How Do I Update the Firmware of an FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module?. Additionally, National Instruments recommends FieldPoint Explorer version 2.0.1 (or higher) for the most robust communication under various network fault conditions. Please visit our Drivers and Updates Library to download the current version of FieldPoint Explorer.
    Operation with Insufficient Power Supply
Most Common Symptom: Intermittent Loss of Communication
Under certain brown-out type conditions, the processor goes into a halt state that is not cleared until power is removed and re-applied to the module. This can happen if the power supply voltage drops below 11 V (the minimum specified voltage), but briefly remains in a range of ~0.7-10.9 V. However, because the module is operating outside of the specified power supply range, the exact failure mode cannot be guaranteed. To determine if you are suffering from an insufficient power supply, connect a multimeter or oscilloscope to the V and C terminals of the FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module. Verify that the power supply voltage is above 11 volts at all times and under all operating conditions. For example, if the FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module power supply is also used to drive other devices, test the power supply voltage when those devices are active and pulling maximum current.
    Diagnostic Check
Most Common Symptom: Intermittent Loss of Communication
A very small percentage of FP-1600 revision A and B modules had a manufacturing defect that could potentially cause intermittent loss of communication. Additionally, application programs might report errors such as Cannot connect to process and Timeout Period Expired. If this is the problem, power-cycling the module will temporarily clear the problem, but the problem might re-appear later. The revision of a FP-1600 module can be determined by reading the label on the underside of the FP-1600. The label will list an assembly number of the format 185690x-01, wherex is the revision letter. To determine if a revision A or B module is suffering from the defect, please download the FieldPoint Ethernet Network Module Diagnostic Utility. If the test utility determines that the module suffers from the defect, please contact National Instruments Technical Support for a RMA number and upgrade per Engineering Change Order (ECO) 13425.

  • Opc communications problem

When building a replacement SCADA computer, and moving over a working Lookout 6.0.2 (with updates) application, we have been unable to get opc communications working.
The Lookout alarm that we get for the opc is:  "OPC/OLE error (1): Couldn't create an OPC server object (65): Class is not licensed for use (80040112)".  We have an activated full integrator version of Lookout.  Does anyone have any advice on this problem?

problem resolved.  apparently the error message indicated that the RSLinx was not properly activated. after proper activation, the error cleared and communications through opc was functional.

  • Lookout OPC Communication Problems

I am running a Lookout process with an OPC server to connect to a
ControlLogix PLC. My Lookout process will not always reflect the
current state of hardware, i.e. simple Boolean objects do not update
on the display control panel. I can, in some cases cause the display
to change by changing the state of my hardware manually (actuating a
limit switch for example) thus Lookout sees an event and updates the
display. But this does not work in all cases so I have no way of
knowing if the display is accurate.
Similary, changing the position of Lookout switches and pushbuttons
on the control panel will be reflected in the plc ladder logic but not
write back to Lookout to report the change. This is true for both
    local and remote position source
    s. I should add that switching from
OPC1 to OPC2 or OPC2 to OPC1 can cause some signals to reflect what
hardware is doing but there is no definite consistency that one can
point to that will identify the problem.
Finally, communication between the OPC Server and the PLC is fully
functional and verifiable. So there seems to be a fundamental flaw in
my design any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Leo,
Have you tried turning On the Force refresh after write setting?
Also, try polling the device periodically to force the updates.

  • How does labview opc communication with plc affect timing for the actual plc application

    Hi Everyone,
I have a doubt and thus want to start a discussion regarding communication with PLC's from NI OPC server.
Let's imagine you have a production machine like a caping machine for a bottle production line, let's say the PLC on this machine is a Siemens S7300 which according to NI is compatible with NI OPC server.
The PLC would have already been programmed by the company who sells the machine to control it correctly.
The question is, if you'd like to add an interface, and all the capabilities that LabVIEW offers to this machine by controlling/monitoring its PLC, returning its alarms etc...
In that configuration is there a possibility that the LabVIEW application you would devellop affects the PLC's Behaviour and thus the machine functionality or yield and thus would have a negative impact?
Thanks a lot for your answers.
    Best Regards,

    Hi Olivioloyer Good Morning:
The issue here is that if you want to control, display and log data and funcionality from that PLC through LabVIEW you will have to change the program on the PLC to work correctly with your Interface and Alarming program that you will create in LabVIEW. If you develop a well designed architecture and an efficient code there will be no negative impact on yout PLC, on the contrary you will expand the funcionality and capability of your application.
Note: You will need to change your PLC program to achieve correct functionality with what your LabVIEW code will do.(Send and receive control commands). If you just want to monitor your PLCs behaviour, your code will be much more simple and maybe no change will be required on the PLCs program.

  • Labview and Mitsubishi OPC: communication

    Hi,
My problem is I have to communicate between a Mitsubishi FX1N and Labview using OPC.  I have Labview 8.0 is that enough to communicate or do I need the DSC module ? I want to do I so simple as posible, nothing fancy. Maybe use of global variables ?
    Dr. Mackay

    Hi
DSC is not necessary to read OPC tags, but it does have a lot of neat features. You can use Datasockets to read OPC tags. A very simple example that demonstrates this is called NI Demo OPC Client and can be found in NI Example Finder. To find the URL of the OPC tags you want to read, you can use DataSocket Select URL.vi.

  • FP-1600 Communication Loss

I have an FP-1600 module that works fine when initially powered up, then stops communicating after several minutes. The module indicates that the network connection is still there. Any ideas other than a bad module?

    Justin
Make sure you have the latest rev. of the FP-1600. Are you using the ethernet interface? Check what error you are getting. If you are getting error 33163, you can trap the error and recover. In my situation I have noticed these errors occur due to electrical noise.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • ISE 1.2 rejects RADIUS messages from vWLC

    Hello,
I have an ISE appliance with the Wireless license. The Cisco vWLC is configured to send Radius traffic to the device, but is getting the error message:
11054 Request from a non-wireless device was  dropped due to installed Wireless license
The vWLC is showing up under endpoints as a VMWARE workstation, and not a WLC, and so under the licensing requirements will not allow RADIUS to be received from anything other than a WLC. I tried hard-coding the policy to match a Cisco WLC with a condition of matching its MAC address, and even disabled the VMWARE profile policy, but the endpoint then only matches the "Unknown" policy. Any ideas?

Check the Cisco ISE dashboard (
    Operations > Authentications
    ) for any indication
regarding the nature of RADIUS communication loss. (Look for instances of your
specified RADIUS usernames and scan the sy
stem messages that are associated with
    any error message entries.)
Log into the Cisco ISE CLI
    2
and enter the following command to produce RADIUS
attribute output that may aid in debugging connection issues:
    test aaa group radius
    new-code
If this test command is successful, you should see the following attributes:
    Connect port
    Connect NAD IP address
Connect Policy Service ISE node IP address
    Correct server key
    Recognized username or password
Connectivity between the NAD and Policy Service ISE node
You can also use this command to help narrow the focus of the potential problem

  • Receiving a continuous status error with the FP1600 module.

I have 3 banks of terminals. All three banks use a FP-1600 module as the network interface. All three banks operate when I power the modules. However, after roughly 15min to a half hour, bank number 1 experiences a continuous red blinking status error, followed by total communication loss to Labview (there is still power to the terminal). The only way to re-establish communication is to cycle the power. This bank contains 3, AO-200 modules; 1, AO-210 module; 2, AI-111 modules; 1, AI-110 module, and 1 RLY-420 module. All modules are powered the same, and the others have never lost communication.

    Prashant,
I would contact the National Instruments support by phone, as you may need to return the FP-1600 for repair.

  • Connection problems with Vista

I have problem using my Nokia 5320 as modem with Vista (with TIM as mobile provider).
The connection, very often, is lost. Even if the symbol "3.5G" is still on the phone, Vista looses
    the internet connection.
Someone says that is a Vista DHCP problem for mobile connection.
Could you, please, help suggesting some solutions?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi All,
I have checked again and the IP remains set when the internet is lost. (USB connection, no globe icon on the network monitor status) However the system handles the connection in strange way with DHCP for sure. I do not really familiar with it, so it could be normal as well.
I realized the communication loss is related to the baud rate change (increase) of the USB modem under the internet connection period (depends on the throughput of the actual 3G, 3.5G connections). I tried to set various details, parameters under modem settings but without any real success. It looks like the OS cannot really handle the HSDPA modem in the phone. Does not really know the exact working parameters of it.
Maybe I am wrong, I only guessing and trying to solve the issue, because it should work smoothly as works under Linux.
    Any idea from an expert?

  • IPhone 3G (v3.1) Stops Responding - Multiple Daily Restarts Required

Since the upgrade to version 3.1 of the iPhone software, my iPhone3G FREQUENTLY and randomly ceases to communicate. No in-bound or out-bound calls, texts, internet, mail - nothing! I have missed several critical phone calls, since the upgrade! No visible evidence of communication loss - carrier signal appears strong as normal. I find that I am having to restart my phone - at minimum - 3-4 times per day. Very troublesome and highly irregular for an Apple product!
Can anyone help!? Come on Apple Tech folks, can't we get this fixed already??

    A few days later.
Problem has recurred a number of times.
About 30% of the time a hard reset does the trick.
To avoid the problem I've set "Auto-Lock" to "Never" and "Passcode Lock" to "Off".
I'll see about returning it under warranty (unfortunately not purchased in country of above, fortunately not restricted to any carrier).

  • ISE acting as Radius Proxy Client?

    Hi,
I have an issue where a remote company has there internal redius server and I have my ISE radius server.
When there users come to my site, they can authenticate with my wireless and my ISE server proxies the request to there home site to be authenticated and tells me if I should allow them access or not.
So standard radius proxy and it all works well when my ISE server begins the exchange.
However if my staff go to there site the reverse is not working, they are proxying the requests back OK, and I can see on the firewall and router the incomming radius packets destined to my ISE server. But there is no recourd on the ISE server of ever reciving them and it all times out.
Is tehre some thing I need to do to allow ISE to act as the client in a radius proxy set up?
    Cheers.
Oh I am running version 1.2

    Hi Aaron,
Check the Cisco ISE dashboard (Operations > Authentications) for any indication regarding the nature of RADIUS communication loss. (Look for instances of your specified RADIUS usernames and scan the system messages that are associated with any error message entries.)
Log into the Cisco ISE CLI5 and enter the following command to produce RADIUS attribute output that may aid in debugging connection issues:
    test aaa group radius new-code
If this test command is successful, you should see the following attributes:
    Connect      port
    Connect NAD      IP address
Connect      Policy Service node IP address
    Correct      server key
    Recognized      username or password
Connectivity      between the NAD and Policy Service node
You can also use this command to help narrow the focus of the potential problem with RADIUS communication by deliberately specifying incorrect parameter values in the command line and then returning to the administrator dashboard (Operations > Authentications) to view the type and frequency of error message entries that result from the incorrect command line. For example, to test whether or not user credentials may be the source of the problem, enter a username and or password that you know is incorrect, and then go look for error message entries that are pertinent to that username in the Operations > Authentications page to see what Cisco ISE is reporting.)
Note This command does not validate whether or not the NAD is configured to use RADIUS, nor does it verify whether the NAD is configured to use the new AAA model.
The Cisco ISE network enforcement device (switch) is missing the radius-server vsa send accounting command.
Verify that the switch RADIUS configuration for this device is correct and features the appropriate command(s).
