OpenGL graphic flash after using side volume buttons

I'm working on an OpenGL game based on the Crashlanding framework in Apple's code examples. I'm experiencing a one frame flash if you use the side volume controls during the game and Apple's graphic feedback overlays on top of the game view. Everything is fine when the overlay is up and begins to fade out but for 1/30th of a second after the fadeout concludes the screen appears to flash black. After further review what is happening is that the underlying game image is being cropped by the bounding rectangle of the OS-generated volume overlay. Anybody have a clue what is causing this and what I can do to prevent it?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
GK

There's a few other posts like this floating around and none of them have any solutions other than it seems to happen on all phones and is a software problem. You can check them out here to see if anyone finds any solutions:

  • Using side volume buttons

I cannot seem to find any information about this, but plenty of games seem to be using it.
How do I set the volume inside my app using the side volume buttons and the mute button?
    Thanks,

In the core audio overview, it says:
iPhone OS has six audio session categories, described in “Audio Session Categories” in System Audio Services Reference. The first and second in this list indicate that your application’s audio is low priority; you intend for the audio to be mixed in with any other audio that may be present:
kAudioSessionCategory_UserInterfaceSoundEffects—For brief sound effects, such as explosions in a game or tap feedback.
kAudioSessionCategory_AmbientSound—For longer-duration background sounds, such as rain, engine noise, or bird songs.
The other four categories indicate that your audio is of high enough priority that you want sounds from built-in applications to stop when your application starts:
kAudioSessionCategory_MediaPlayback—For any audio or audio plus video media playback.
kAudioSessionCategory_LiveAudio—For a live performance scenario, such an application that simulates a piano or guitar.
    kAudioSessionCategory_RecordAudio—For recording audio.
kAudioSessionCategory_PlayAndRecord—For an application that records and plays back audio simultaneously.
Each of the six categories has implications for:
Whether your audio will mix with that of other applications, or silence them.
How your audio will behave when the user adjusts the volume buttons and the ring/silent switch.
How routing changes, and whether audio will stop, when a user plugs or unplugs a headset, or docks or undocks their device.
Your application’s priority for managing hardware parameters including sample rate and I/O buffer size.
The precise behaviors for these facets of an audio session are not under your application’s control, but rather are set by Core Audio. Apple may refine this behavior in future versions of iPhone OS. Your best strategy is to pick the category that most accurately describes your intentions for the audio behavior in your application.
So it looks like you can't directly control audio based on the switch, but can indirectly.

  • I could not turn up the volume on my iPad using the volume button on the side. Is there any way to fix this?

I could not turn up the sound (volume) on my iPad 2 using the volume button on the side. This happens after I have reduced the volume to minimum using the same volume button. The volume indicator does not move up at all. Note: it was not on mute, so the issue seems to be the button.

Try this and see if it works.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

    Hello, try kguy's solution here...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2332457?start=0&tstart=0
First, Go to System Preferences, keyboard, and click on the Keyboard tab
Make sure that the checkbox by "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys" is NOT checked.
Next, click on the Show All button, and select Bluetooth. You should see your Apple Wireless Keyboard listed on the left side of the screen.
Click once to select it, and then click the gear icon at the bottom of the box, and choose Disconnect.
Power off the keyboard by holding down the power button on the keyboard for a few seconds until it show "keyboard Off on your imac screen, then turn it back on again.
The device should appear once again in your bluetooth list.
Try out the volume control buttons now, and see if that cleared things up

    Hi nitramred,
To start troubleshooting this issue where you are unable to adjust the volume after receiving a call, please go ahead and first force close all of the apps currently running on the device, and then reset it by following the steps in the articles below.
iOS: Force an app to close
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    Take care,

  • How do you increase the voicemail volume on an iPhone 4s ( Verizon ). The phone volume is fine. It is when I retrieve voicemails. Even the speakerphone is faint. I have adjusted the side volume buttons and the volume control in settings. What am I missing?

How do I increase the voicemail volume on an iPhone 4s ( Verizon )? The phone volume is fine. I have adjusted both side volume buttons as well as the volume control in settings.

Number one - that person has given you false information...the Apple store genius bar supports all Apple products whether in or out of warranty.  Checking is free, service on an out of warranty item is not free.
Try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.
Since you show that you have iOS 7.0.3 you might want to update that iOS to 7.0.4...plug the iPhone in so you are on a solid power source, then while on a WiFi go to Settings > General > Software Update and update to 7.0.4.

I think this may not be a browser problem but rather a Google problem.

  • How to get my lock button to stop turning volume down then locking, and my side volume button to stop locking my iPod?

Recently sent my iPod touch 4 generation into a local place for a battery change, and now it's suddenly swapped the lock button and lower side volume button. The lock button now turns the volume down then locks, and the volume button turns down and locks too. Anybody know how to stop this? It's annoying! Thanks for your help:)

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem take it back to where you got it fixed. They messed up.

  • Side volume buttons only work with phone

the side volume button on my 4S only works when talking on the phone.  It will not work for music.  Does anyone know why?  There has been no water on this phone.

Re-insert a pair of headphones and remove them.  Or restart the phone.

Last time I ran into this problem because the batteries was faulty. It may not be, but you should get a new set of battery to test out.

  • Why does it say headphones when i use the volume buttons

why does it say headphones when i use the volume buttons instead of volume when the headphones are not plucked in?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • Does anyone know why my side volume buttons are not working

My side volume buttons are not working, How do I fix it

i can relate...it's frustrating! i suddenly have that same issue, as well as my off button isn't working....my phone was functioning just fine until my granddaughter played with it for about 5
minutes> that's all it took, the volume & off button didn't work when she gave it back to me. call it coincidental...who knows, and know one seems to know the FIX. but i can tell you that if your sound setting is ON, then that's not going to fix the problem. i've even reset my phone from settings, but that didn't resolve the issue either. the next step would be to plug into itunes & do a factory restore.....but i read someone tried that and it didn't work either,  so good luck getting a resolution for this...:)

  • Side volume button and top mute button

I bought this phone from someone and everything works fine but when I try to push the side volume buttons, nothing happens. I can only change it from Normal to Vibrate on the Applications Menu (?). Also, I tried pushing the top mute button and it entered standby mode. How do I change this?

All the above are correct in the working of the side volume and mute buttons.
For the volume up/down while on the main screen... what is it that you were expecting to occur?

  • IPod touch 3rd generation side volume button (defect?)

I received a 64GB iPod touch as a gift a while back, but I've only just gotten around to using it to replace my 2nd generation 32GB iPod touch. I've noticed a problem with the side volume control however, I can turn to volume down easily, but it is very difficult to turn it up. If I press on the upper end of the button it is completely unresponsive; I can only turn the volume back up if my finger is positioned near the center (but slightly towards the upper end) of the button. While listening to music the volume slider works fine, and I have been very gentle with it. I was just wondering if any others have had the same issue, as this wasn't a problem on my second generation iTouch. It's very inconvenient, especially when I want to use the alarm. It sounds like a hardware issue -- since I received this in December, it's still within the warranty period.
    Thanks in advance!

    Maybe:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
