Opening DVD in Quicktime

Trying to open a DVD of a movie I made in Quicktime.  I get, "QuickTime Player can't open "name of movie_DVD_130523_T1.mpg" vecause a required codec isn't available."
It tells me to click on "Tell Me More" to see if additional software is available.  Which I have done, to no avail.
As always, thank you for your help.

In most cases QuickTime Player can't open or play MPEG-2 formats without additional software. Depending on your OS you may need the MPEG-2 playback component (sold by Apple).
If you just want to view the DVD contents use the DVD Player app or the free VLC player software.

  • How to play a DVD in QuickTime  first of many questions

Hi, can someone please explain how to play a movie from DVD in QuickTime.
I go to "Ablage" (don't know english word for that) -> open file -> klick on some *.VOB and klick play. But the Movie is very slow and I have no sound.

I also can open *.VOBs from my HD with QuickTime and convert them. They just have no sound and also I can't trimm them in QuickTime.
Since you already have the MPEG2 component, recommend you simply download the free MPEG Streamclip application. It can also load/convert single VOB or entire Title VOB series and allows you to trim, adjust volume, brightness, contrast, and/or saturation levels as well. Quite a handy application whether used alone or in conjunction with QT Pro filters and/or preset options.

  • Cannot open file in QuickTime Pro

I recently installed iTunes and QuickTime Pro on my computer. I would like to put some DVD's that I own onto my iPod, but when I put a movie in the DVD drive, I cannot open it through QuickTime Pro. I tried uninstalling both, restarting the computer, re-installing both, restarting, and still I cannot even play a movie through QuickTime Pro.

QuickTime pro doesn't display the MPEG-2 file format (DVD's) without third party software help. Apple sells the MPEG-2 Playback Component for $20 but it does not allow playback of commercial (Hollywood CSS encrypted) DVD's.
Visit the iPod discussions pages for more answers.

  • Playing dvds with quicktime

i just purchased the component to quicktime that allows me to play DVDs on quicktime but i still cant get my dvds to play in quicktime. when i put the dvd into my computer it doesnt open up with quicktime and when i look at the differnt files there are so many different video files on the dvd and none of them open up with quicktime. how do i get my dvds to play in quicktime now that i downloaded the mpeg2 player for quicktime?

Even though it is not encrpypted it could still be in transport_stream format and the component will not play it. Try this freeware. The Mac version will play transport_stream, so maybe the new Windows version will also. Mpeg StreamClip

  • Can't play a movie on DVD with QuickTime

I can't play a movie on a DVD with QuickTime. With the player open, when I go to File and then Open, I get the two Video and Audio folders on the DVD itself! The Apple Quicktime guide says of how to play video:
"To open a movie on your hard disk, a CD, or a DVD, do one of the following:
    1) In the Finder (or Windows Explorer), double-click the file or drag it to the QuickTime Player application icon.
2)Choose File > Open and select the file."
Firstly, if I double click on the DVD drive in Windows Explorer, it'll open the DVD with my default player (not Quicktime). Secondly what is the 'QuickTime Player application icon?
    Thanks, Trickyf

Thanks QuickTimeKirk. I didn't know that about QuickTime not being able to play DVD movies. However am still interesed re the icon. Where is the icon supposed to be which I drag files to? On the desktop? There isn't an icon in the player.
    Thanks

  • After installing Maverick, my downloaded movies will not play in Quick Time.  It gives me the following error "You can't open the application "QuickTime Player.app" because it may be damaged or incomplete."  What can I do?

After installing Maverick, my downloaded movies will not play in Quick Time.  I receive the following error message:
You can’t open the application “QuickTime Player.app” because it may be damaged or incomplete.  So I tried to unistall QT and I get an error that says, You can not delete this application as it is a requirement for the OSX.
Well I did find a way to delete it, by going into the various components and one by one deleting it.  Now I reinstall it and  the message is that this Quick Time is for an earlier version before Maverick 7.  SMH....Now what.?

    Hello, terrygav.
I would recommend processing a reinstall of Mavericks.

  • New Mac Mini won't open DVD Player, I get an error

This is a brand new mac mini (latest model bought two days ago), just opened and tried to open DVD player without any media on the DVD drive and the DVD Player doesn't open and I get this error:
    There was an initialization error.
A valid video device could not be found for playback (-70017)
    What could that be?
    Wilfredo.

No. The DVD Player always open even if there is no media in the drive.
The problem was the Region. I needed to set the region on the drive, but the error message never told what was the problem, I had to figure it out myself.

  • I can not open itunes without quicktime 7.5.5 why ?

i can not open itunes without quicktime 7.5.5 why ?

You don't provide us with much background infomation such as operating system version you are using, but usually when I see this kind of question it gets answered by:
    QuickTime 7.5.5 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL27
    QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl761
= New version of Quicktime installed but application reports it needs to have that version installed =
Open Application > Utilities > System Profiler and check the Quicktime version in Frameworks vs. the version in Applications.  I recently helped where the person had re-installed their operating system.  It had kept the newer Player application but had reverted to an earlier version of the underlying support framework files which many applications utilize.  Re-installing Quicktime 7.7 took care of the problem.  Do this manually, not with Software Update.
Installation get stuck at "configuring installation" - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2592979?threadID=2592979  - uninstall Quicktime before installing.

  • Folder action - open file in quicktime

I'm trying to do something I think should be simple, but I can't seem to make it happen.
I get voicemails as .wav files in email. I'd like to save these to a folder, and have them automatically open up with quicktime player.
I've verified that I've got folder actions working, as I've tested some of the example scripts for converting files. However, this script fails silently. What clue am I missing?
on adding folder items to thisFolder after receiving these_items
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
    open file these_items
    end tell
    end adding folder items to
    Thanks for any help!
    - Steve

My guess is that what you're missing is that these_items is a list therefore you can't open file <list> since you cannot coerce a list to a file.
(note this is true even if there's only one file - it's a list of one item)
Ironically, you may be able to:
    open these_items
since you're not trying to coerce the list to a file (QuickTime Player will look at each item in the list and work it out).
Alternatively, the typical approach is to iterate through the list:
on adding folder items to thisFolder after receiving these_items
     repeat with each_item in these_items
      tell application "QuickTime Player"
       open each_item
      end tell
     end repeat
    end adding folder items to

  • Sound problems after opening DVD player

When I open DVD player I no longer get sound output on webpages unless I restart safari or firefox
I've got sound outputted through digital output
Everything is fine before but the second that DVD player opens and even after it's closed down I still don't get sound output on webpages until I restart the browser
    Anyone got any ideas ???
    Cheers

Since it's so new, I would call AppleCare Support or bring it into an Apple store. That shouldn't be happening with a brand-new Mac.

  • Dvd will not open dvd player

I just created a new DVD video using iDVD, but after burning the DVD and trying to play the DVD on any computer, it will not open unless I open the DVD Player first (I have my settings on DVD Player to automatically open DVDs). Any ideas?

    Hi
Most common origin to this are
    • Use of Cheap DVD brand e.g. Memorex, NoName etc. - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in them)
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4
    • Use of DVD-/+RW disks - I only use DVD-R as they also play on older DVD-Players (DVD+R don't)
