Options missing from AirPort Utility

I have several Airport Express devices with AirTunes and Printer sharing set up.
I need to turn on the "Share printers over Ethernet WAN port" setting but it is missing from the Airport Utility today. I'm sure I've seen it there before. I can even find it in the "Find a setting" search, i.e. I type "share" and "Share printers over Ethernet WAN port" shows up in the suggestions. When I click on it I'm taken to the tab that the manual says it is on but it just isn't there. Not even greyed out!
Has anyone seen anything like it?

How do you have the AirPort Express (AX) configured?
This setting would only be available if the AX is:
(a) Connected directly via Ethernet to the internet or LAN.
(b) Configured to create a network.
(c) Configured to share a single IP address (distributing IP addresses).
This setting would not be available if the AX is configured to operate as a bridge. In this mode, printing and music streaming services are available through the Ethernet port so there is no need for the option.
This setting also would not be available if the AX is configured to join a wireless network as a client. In this mode the Ethernet port is disabled.

  • "Preferred Network" option missing from Airport tab

My computer was just joining networks, so I switched my MPB to "By Default, Join: A specific network". Now I find that I've got to tell my computer to join the wireless network at work. Since I'd like my computer to join both my home networks without interaction from me I read the help file to figure out how to do it. The help file said to choose "Preferred Networks" from the "By Default, Join:" popup menu, but the popup menu on my computer only had one choice, "A specific network".
Anyone know what might have happened to the other options in that popup menu?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Replying to my own post, bad form...
I don't know why "Preferred Networks" was missing from my "By Default, Join:" menu, but I discovered that I could get the option back by creating a new location and migrating my old settings to the new location.

  • WDS Option missing from Airport Extreme Utility

I'm attempting to connect a non-wifi computer to my network using a Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. I understand that I need to set up a WDS network, and the Express allows me to join one...however, I have no options for setting one up in the "Wireless mode" drop down on the Extreme. Help?
    Thanks!
    R~

If you need more "options", hold down the "option" key while you click on the selection box.
Apple hides the WDS setting because it imposes a huge performance penalty on the network. Everything will drop down to 'g" speeds, even if you have newer "n" devices and the bandwidth will be cut by 50%. That's huge.
If both your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express are newer "802.11n" devices, you can use the "extend a wireless network" setup for much better performance. Hopefully, that might be the case?

  • Join existing network option missing from Airport Extreme

I am resetting an Airport Extreme because of network issues (not the airport side). It used to join an existing network which is still there. but now, when i go to set it up, the only options are Create a Wireless Network, Participate in a WDS network, and Extend a Wireless Network. I can not extend because of the way our network is set up. Can anyone tell me how I can get the plain old Join and Existing Network option back? I miss it...

emcfins, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unlike the AirPort Express (AX), the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have the ability to join a wireless network as a client.
The only way the AEBS can wirelessly join a network is if it is configured to participate in a WDS network (802.11g mode) or extend a Wireless Network (802.11n mode).

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc  if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
    Thanks in advance

You are likely forgetting a step.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
    Click Restart

  • 'Macintosh HD' missing from Disc Utility

Have 2013 MacBook Pro. Had some minor issues, so checked disc utility. Told to reinstall OS X, as the directories weren't reparable. Tried reinstalling via disc that came with the computer, but could never get back to desktop screen. Tried one last time and the 'Macintosh HD' was missing from Disc Utility screen. Called Apple who said the HD might need to be replaced, which is really unacceptable after 2 years of light use. Ran Apple Diagnostics on Hardware, came back 'no problems found." Two questions: can I get back to HD and how do I get from the reinstallation to desktop?  Thanks!!

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.
If successful, you should see a revolving globe.
This will connect you to the Apple servers.
Follow the instructions and you should see a 4 option menu.
Select Disk Utility and then First Aid.  Run Verify and Repair.
Then you can select the OSX reinstall option.  It will reinstall the original OSX that the MBP came with.
If no success, then the best option is an Apple store genius bar appointment.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

Are you using a new 802.11ac Time Capsule - the "tall" one - and are you still using Mac OS X 10.6.8?
You need OS X 10.7.5 "Lion" or later, or an iOS device, to configure an 802.11ac Time Capsule:

  • Where did my AEBS go???  AEBS disappears from AirPort Utility

I have set up my new AirPort Base Station using the Airport Utility but once it is setup it disappears from the utility. I am able to use the AEBS as an ethernet router for my mini HOWEVER my secondary MacBook is only able to "find" the wireless signal periodically. It is not a distance problem since the two computers and the routers are in the same small bedroom!
Any suggestions to improve performance? Reliability? I am beginning to think that I was better off with my not so fast Airport Extreme. . .

Thanks for the quick response! I will not discount the idea that I made a mistake in the setup but I have not duplicated any of the names or passwords in the setup.
I also thought that maybe there could have been that type of issue so I reset the AEBS and used the Airport Utility to set up the router again (it seems like whenever I setup a router at home it takes at least two tries before I get all the steps right. . . so it was not a big deal).
After completing Airport Utility on my mini everything looked great, then without any action on my part the AEBS DISAPPEARED from Airport Utility!!! It makes sense to me that if the utility cannot see the AEBS then the MacBook is going to have problems too. . .
Any other plans of action? My partner, the MacBook user, is voting for taking the **** thing back even though I am really liking the much faster ethernet connection. . .

  • AirPrt Express dissapears from AirPort Utility after working fine for a bit

I got an Airport Express, set it up as connect to existing wifi network. All works fine, and the speakers show up in ITunes. But then suddenly after a couple of minutes of working fine, it just disappears from iTunes, and is also gone from AirPort Utility, although the light is still green on the AirPort Express unit.. I then have to reset and all restart and all sorts before it comes back. And the goes away again after a couple of minutes. This is not dropping out. It completely disappears, BUT the light on the Airport Express is still green?
    Any ideas?

My problem is almost the same. Today i set up my new Airport Express. It worked great. Then I tried to add another computer to the network. And it worked as well. But after one last change (can't remember now exactly which one) the AX resent and never came back. Got a green light but the Airport Utility no longer finds it. Tried soft, hard, factory resets. Green light all the way. But it's like it's not there. Neither computer "sees" it.
Any help would be a godsend.

  • "Deploy" Option Missing from VS

We just finished installing SharePoint 2013 RTM and VS 2012 for development purposes. I also installed the Preview 2 of the Office and SharePoint Dev Tools. The "Deploy" option which was previously present in Visual Studio to deploy SharePoint projects seems
to have disappeared. Oddly, I can however still tell the projects to Debug, which does the equivalent of Deploy + starts the debugger.
This is an extremely annoying issue as it is much faster to Deploy without starting the debugger. If anyone has any solution I'd be very appreciative. Thanks.

  • I have Airport Extreme (802.11ac), which disappears from Airport Utility

Why does it disappear?  I am not further than 50 feet from AE and it flips out!  AE is connected to a switch from ISP located floor below my apartment that only works if set to "Bridge Mode" on network settings tab.  I am trying to use connected 1TB drive to stream movies to AppleTV that is not 50 feet away from AE.  When AE disappears from Airport Utility, I still have connectivity to web via Wi-Fi, but I cannot stream from HD.  Very frustrating!!!!  Running MBA with all software updated.  Any thoughts?

Are you running Yosemite on your MBA? If so, this may be the culprit. There are a number of posts here describing this exact issue. At present there doesn't seem to be a solution. Even the latest OS X build 10.10.1 did not seem to resolve it. One theory going around is that this may be due to a conflict between the Bonjour protocol and the AirPort Utility. Some have tried temporarily disabling their OS X software firewall which appears to work ... BUT not consistently ... nor would I recommend it.

  • Time capsule remote access message from airport utility "An error occurred while reading the configuration"

WHEN I TRY TO ACCESS Time capsule remotely, I receive a  message from airport utility "An error occurred while reading the configuration." It worked before on the same computer with the same setting. I am in a different country now (Afghanistan). Not sure if that can be an issue.

If the TC is at home and in router mode as the main router of the network, get someone at home to give you the current public IP which will be on the summary page of the airport utility.
With the public IP try and access it by typing the IP directly into finder.. go.. connect to server.
    AFP://publicip.
If you have setup WAN access it will. Otherwise no.
For BTMM and iCloud access and its various issues.. this thread may give you some ideas.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3699096?start=0&tstart=0
If the icloud method proves unreliable and you are dependent on access to the TC.. I strongly recommend better and more reliable access methods.. in particular buy a VPN modem or router.. whichever suits your internet type and put the TC in bridge behind it. Direct connect to the TC via the vpn.
You will need either a static public IP which you purchase as an extra from your ISP .. maybe via a business account or setup a dyndns account which are readily available.
