ORA-01033: Recovering database

Hi,
I have 2 database running on my local system ( Windows-XP, Oracle 10g ).
After abrupt shutdown of the system, one of my DB is throwing an error ORA-01033 ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress.
So I tried with below given things to fix the error.
c:\sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect sys as sysdba
SQL> shutdown
SQL> startup
It gave an error..
ORA-12528:TNS:Listener:All Appropriate instances are blocking new connections
SQL> select status from v$instance;
ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE
So I tried stopping and restarting the Listener.
LSNRCTL> stop
LSNRCTL> start
Then again tried to startup the database
SQL> startup
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
SQL> alter database mount;
SQL> alter database open;
Alertlog file shows....

It would be important to know what kind of backups do you have.
Do you have offline backup?
Do you have archive mode turned on?

  • Error in Recover Database -  ORA-01547 , ORA-01194 and ORA-01110

    Hello folks,
    I am facing a problem when recovering a database..
    I made each tablespace in backup mode, then copied the datafile. I revert back the tablespace status to normal status.Once all datafiles are copied to target location, i created the control file from the source db.
    I started the target db by
    sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
    then i executed the control file
    SQL>@ctrlfile.sql
    Control file got created.
    SQL>recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
    it asked for archives. I gave the path one by one until everything was done.Now i gave 'cancel' as below.
    Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL}
    cancel
    ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
    ORA-01194: file 377 needs more recovery to be consistent
    ORA-01110: data file 377: '<path>/xxfndx01.dbf'
    ORA-01112: media recovery not started
    Could anyone please tell me where I went wrong and how can I move ahead from this stage???
    Later on, when I gave open resetlogs, it gave the same error(as below)
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    alter database open resetlogs
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01194: file 377 needs more recovery to be consistent
    ORA-01110: data file 377: '<path>/xxfndx01.dbf'
    Please let me know the mistake I made, how to avoid that and how to proceed now ???

    Hello Cherrish,
    A very good question you have asked. I hope you realize that you're doing an incomplete recovery. There is some amount of information that is still there in the online redo-log, that would not be applied on your target db. Moreover when you're using backup controlfile, you do not know till which point you need to apply archive logs.
    For incomplete recovery, Oracle for some reason has been very strict about the recover database command. i.e.
    recover database using backup controlfile
    recover database using backup controlfile until cancel
    Is not same. It also applies to the command that you had given. By giving the command 'recover database using backup controlfile until cancel', you're telling Oracle that incomplete recovery is in process, and you would do resetelogs, to make sure all files are in sync. This is required when you have lost the redo-logs
    In case you have just lost the control file. All latest redo-logs, archive-logs and datafiles are okay (or have been restored), then recover database using backup controlfile; would work perfectly okay. and resetlogs would not be required.. and that would be a complete recovery
    I hope this all makes sense to you
    Regards
    Sudhanshu

  • Recover database until cancel using backup controlfile Fails with ORA-01547

    Hi
    First of all, I'm sorry for posting in this community as my issue doesn't have any thing to do with Rman, but I couldn't find any more relative Community to post in
    our System is Oracle EBS 11i and the OS on the production is AIX 5.2 / and the DR is 5.3 / DB version is 9i
    we have our Oracle ERP scheduled using crontab to take a database COLD backup daily using gtar -cvzf .
    yesterday I needed to clone the database only, so I used my usual method witch is
    1) on the source SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace as '<dest>/makecntrlfil.sql'
    then you can delete the Commented header and change the first command from
    "CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE <SOURCE> NORESETLOGS ..."
    TO
    CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE <TARGET> RESETLOGS <NO>ARCHIVELOG
    2) de-compress the tgz files
    3) on the target edit the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<source>.ora, $ORACLE_HOME/environment file
    4)run /ORACLE_HOME/appsutils/clone/bin/adcfgclone.prl
    5) delete old controlfiles
    6) on the database run the script you created on firs t step to create a new control fole
    7)recover database until cancel using backup controlfile
    8) alter database open resetlogs
    add new temp file system
    this way I used to do it
    but yesterday when trying to execute recover database it didn't work, and gave this error
    ORA-00279: change 6450277404 generated at 02/28/2013 02:47:56 needed for thread
    1
    ORA-00289: suggestion : /ERPDEV/DBASE/devdb/9.2.0/dbs/arch1_188462.dbf
    ORA-00280: change 6450277404 for thread 1 is in sequence #188462
    Specify log: {<RET>=suggested | filename | AUTO | CANCEL} >> I gave cancel >> so >>
    ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
    ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
    ORA-01110: data file 1: '/ERPDEV/DBASE/SYS/devdata/system01.dbf'
    nothing strange in the original alert log file in the time of taking the backup
    So can You please tell me what maybe wrong and why it used to work before and now it's not
    take in consideration that we are on archive log mode, but not using Rman or the archived Logs for backup and the sequence it needed ( 188462 ) is too old and already deleted on Production.

  • ORA-01033 and flash back database

    I don't really know how the flashback database work. I enabled the backup recovery option during the 11g R2 installation. It will automatic scheduled the backup around 2:00AM daily. My question is does it automatically restart the database after the backup? Because I got an error ORA-01033 from the EM alert email every day around the same time.
    Thanks for any help!
    - Johnny

    Can anyone help me? I'm still getting this alert every morning around 2AM:
    Target Name=MEDIAMGR
    Target Type=Database Instance
    Host=mediamgr2-db
    Metric=Status
    Metric Value=0
    Timestamp=Dec 28, 2011 2:01:25 AM PST
    Severity=Critical

    Notification Rule Name=Database Availability and Critical States
    Notification Rule Owner=SYSMAN
    Notification Count=1
    This may not related to the flashback backup job , but it did happen when the backup job was running. Also, another application server crashed at the same time when this happened. If I turn off the application server before 2AM, I don't get any error or alert. My question is how do I find out what cause the database to crash? Beside the alert log, is there another log that has the crashing information? How do I troubleshoot the problem? Can that be a memory issue?

  • Manual\DGMGRL Switchover Standby ora-01033 error

    I have created a standby server for my SAP application as a part of test Disaster Recovery scenario. I can see the redo logs getting applied from primary to standby. However when I manually switchover the roles i encounters ORA -01033 error at NEW PRIMARY server and logs are also not getting applied in this scenario.
    When i again changes the roles it works fine. I am not sure what is cause of ORA -01033 error. Here are the detailed tnsnames.ora of both sites.

  • Due to ORA-01033, I could not start my BW 3.5 instance

    Hello Friends,
    I am not able to start up my BI 3.5 instance from SAP GUI.
    Error in the SAP Manager console is
    "Database: > ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress"
    So I shutdown my oracle database,log on as sysdba and applied following commands.
    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL> startup

    ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open
    What is this ORA-01589 error all about?
    I am still not able to start my BW instance.
    Please help me with this.
    Thanks & Regards,
    -Hardik

    Hi Hardik,
               This error normally comes due to the inconsistent data file and can be recovered if you are having the current archive files in your oraarch folder.
                   Shutdown the database first then startup the database as follows:
    connect / as sysdba
    SQL>startup mount
    SQL> RECOVER DATAFILE 'E:\ORACLE\S01\SAPDATA1\SYSTEM_\SYSTEM.DATA1';
    Then open the database as below:
    SQL>ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
    I hope this will solve the problem provided the required archive files are available.
    Regards,
    Vinayak

    hi,
    i think the database is crashed an when i try recover database

    when i try to connect it gives 01033 error.
    would anyone suggest me

    I did both your suggestions
    First of all all clients are working properly till yesterday without any problem. Today I faced this problem in all clients around 10 clients same time. I feel it is may be Host machine database /network setting problem. How we can trace?
    When I restart Listner using lsnrctl command in server , then I can connect from client using SQLplus but a while only. When I Establish another connection in the same client or from any other client, it won't allow me. Also , connected session getting error.
    When I issue lsnrctl status command in server it is displaying like this. Maxnew is the one that have problem.

  • ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress on mounted standby

    Hi we are using Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0
    We have seven different databases on different machines.
    Similarly we also have standby database for all databases on different machines.
    The standby databases are opened as follows:
    Startup mount;
    Alter database mount standby database;
    Alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;
    When we tried to connect on standby database as Non-SYSDBA user we received following message (that I think is correct)

    Both the standbys are on different machines, with same configuration.
    What could be the reason?
    Regards,
    Hassan

    Output for btsouth is correct,when connecting as non-sysdba user. On btnorthn obviously it is tried to execute a query. Is it possible you have sqlplus startup scripts (login.sql and/or glogin.sql) on btnorthn but not on btsouth?

    >> ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress
    This error encounters when the database is already running, so it needed to be shutdown first, that you have done so.
    >>ORA-01113: file 10 needs media recovery
    ORA-01110: data file 10: 'C:\ORACLE\ORADATA\AMINA\XDB01.DBF'
    Oracle Metalink has good solution/steps for this to recover.
    SQL> shutdown immediate

    Database dismounted.
    ORACLE instance shut down.
    By the way, what where you doing on database any changes done?? because when you tried to shutdown the database with immediate option, the database was not open.

  • ORA-01033:ORACLE

    hi,
    i have this error
    ORA-01033:ORACLE INITIALIZATION OR SHUTDOWN IN PROGRESS
    i cant open the database,
    the database is mounted but i cant open it,
    because my tablespace is damaged,
    please help me it emergency

    I tested this scenario before (restore a tablespace without a backup), but Oracle Support may be best as I am not sure you are in the same situation.
    1.     sqlplus /nolog
    2.     connect / as sysdba
    3.     alter tablespace xxx offline immediate;
    4.     shutdown immediate
    5.     startup mount
    6.     alter database datafile ‘/path/file_name.dbf’ offline drop;
    7.     alter database create datafile ‘/original_path/original_file_name’ as ‘/correct/correct_file_name’; (the original file name may have been changed to $ORACLE_HOME/UNNAMEDxxxxx.dbf)
    8.     recover datafile ‘/correct_path/correct_file_name’ (“recover tablespace xxx” can be substituted depending on the number of files affected)
    9.     When prompted for the archivelogs, choose “auto” (assumption: all archivelog files are present)
    10.     alter database open;
    11.     alter tablespace xxx online;

  • Unable to recover database after rman recovery and database open resetlogs

    I am running Oracle 10.2.0.5 on OpenSUSE 9. I have been trying to upgrade the database to 11g, through dbua. I was getting stuck at one point during the Oracle Server install and the upgrade failed and I was forced to restore the database to an earlier backup.
    Below is the current place that I am stuck. As you can see I opened the database multiple times and reset the logs. Now I am afraid that my controlfile and redo log backups are out of sync and i can't get them back on track. Before when I actually got the database recovered RMAN would immediately throw:
    RMAN-06900: WARNING: unable to generate V$RMAN_STATUS or V$RMAN_OUTPUT row
    RMAN-06901: WARNING: disabling update of the V$RMAN_STATUS and V$RMAN_OUTPUT rows
    OPA-00600: ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: ...
    The database would open with ALTER DATABASE RESETLOGS but any query on non-system tables would fail and throw:
    ORA-04045: errors during recompilation/revalidation of LCRS_DEV1.FACILITY_REF
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [17069], [0x1158ED180], [], [], [],

    Thanks for the reply Hemant. I have reset the database for the controlfile that I am using as backup and now I am not able to recover until the correct SCN. I am thinking that my recovery catalog is bad. If I mount with the current controlfile I have this list of incarnations:
    List of Database Incarnations
    DB Key  Inc Key DB Name  DB ID            STATUS  Reset SCN  Reset Time
    *1 1 LCRSDEV 756543625 PARENT 1 22-OCT-05*
    *2 2 LCRSDEV 756543625 PARENT 525876 20-JAN-11*

    However if I restore the controlfile to the earlier version I am getting the following output from the process:
