Oracle 10G Upgrade planning

We have various applications (OLTP and DW) on Oracle 9i release 2 databases (RAC and non-RAC). Is there a document for planning the upgrade from Oracle 9i release 2 database to Oracle 10G?
Any document on how to plan the upgrade based on the applications that we have on the databases, impacts and other gotchas? Can someone point me to such documents if they exist.
Thanks.

I had a problem when I was executing Catpatch.SQL (A Postinstallation task), I had to drop the schema XDB, as a workaround to this problem. I used the steps listed by Metalink to migrate from 9.2.0.5 to 10.1.0.2.
The metalink doc id is: 263809.1
Subject: Complete checklist for manual upgrades to 10g.

  • Oracle 10G upgrade and MRP planning problems

We just upgraded to Oracle 10G and are having users complaining about MRP not planning in correct low level code sequence. What has happened is that the MRP is planning component parts before the parent parts. We have never had this occur before and are on 4.6C hot pack 38. Help!!

    Hi,
There are some Post-Upgrade Tasks like set compatible, db stats, check invalid objects, removing some database parameters, etc.  Make sure you perform these if you have not, please refer to your specific Oracle upgrade guide.
    Thanks,

  • Oracle 8.0.6 to Oracle 10G Upgrade Query

    Hi,
I have a customer that has Business Objects Release 5.1.x accessing an Oracle 8.0.6 database. They are planning to migrate the database to Oracle 10G Release 2.0
Will Business Objects Release 5.1.x reports run off their upgraded Oracle 10G Release 2.0 database or will Business Objects have to be migrated as well ?
Any pointers or links on this will be very helpful.
    Thx in advance
    Best Regards

    Hi
BO5.1 is not supported with Oracle10g so the user has to upgrade their BO version too.
You can download the Product documentations from help.sap.com for detailed information.

  • Oracle 10g upgradation.

    Dear Friends,
    We are using ECC6.0 and Oracle 10g (10.2.0.2) and OS is HP-UX 11 v2.
Now I want to ugrade Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g.
If any one has done, please share with me and any document for guidelines.
    Regards
    Ganesh Datt Tiwari

    > Please provide the link from where I can download the same. I have got patch set of 10.2.0.4 but not upgrade DVDs.
Those are the files you need.
    - you install 10.2.0.x
    - you upgrade using the patchset to 10.2.0.4
You can (and should) upgrade to 10.2.0.5. Be aware that the general support for 10.x is ending at the end of july 2011.

  • Procedure execution time difference in Oacle 9i and Oracle 10g

    Hi,
My procedure is taking time on
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 is 14 min.
same procedure is taking time on oracle Release 9.2.0.1.0 is 1 min.
    1) Data is same in both environment.
    2) Number of records are same 485 rows for cursor select statement.
3)Please guide me how to reduce the time in oracle 10g for procedure?
i have checked the explain plan for that cursor query it is different in both enviroment.
so i have analysis that procedure is taking time on cursor fetch into statement in oracle 10g.
    example:-
    create or replace procedure myproc
    CURSOR cur_list
    IS select num
    from tbl
    where exist(select.......
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION SET SQL_TRACE = TRUE';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION SET TIMED_STATISTICS = TRUE';
    OPEN cur_list;
    LOOP
FETCH cur_list INTO cur_list; -----My procedure is taking time in this statement only for some list number. there are 485 list number.
    end loop;
TRACE file for oracle 10g is look like this:-
call count cpu elapsed disk query current rows
    Parse 1 0.00 0.00 0 0 0 0
    Execute 1 0.37 0.46 0 2 0 0
    Fetch 486 747.07 730.14 1340 56500700 0 485

    a) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?
    b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes?
    c) Use Dataguard with 2 different RAC environments (2 nodes each). How would this work? Is it the only possible way? Any steps please?
    Thanks

first of all i would not change several components (OS, database version) at a time. My recommendation is to make small steps and start with the operating system first. Seconds recommendation is to test and test everything in your dev or test environment prior doing the upgrades in the productive environment. Trust me: You will face problems :-) So you better try it beforehand!

  • Oracle 10g Diff in execution plan query with binding var Vs without

We recently did 10g upgrade. In 10g, execution plan differs for query with binding var(thru jdbc etc) Vs without it as given below. For query with binding var,
it chooses poor execution plan(no index is used, full scan is done etc). everything worked fine in 9i. To rectify the problem, we have to hint query with right index, join etc. but i dont like this solution.
I would rather prefer to correct database to choose right execution path instead of eacy query level. but not sure what causes the issue.
Does anybody came across this issue? if so, Please share your experiences. Thanks for the help. Do let me know if you need more info.
    1. Query without binding bar:
    select * from test where col1 = :1 and col2 = :2
    1. Query without binding bar:
select * from test where col1 = 'foo' and col2= 'bar'

I am not an expert but in my humble opinion it is the developer's responsability to ensure the correct explain plan is used before deploying code to production, if the explain plan returned by the DB is bad, then the use of a hint is perfectly acceptable.
    Check this out: http://lcgapp.cern.ch/project/CondDB/snapshot/performance.html
    Excerpt:
Bind variable peeking. If an SQL query contains bind variables, the optimal execution plan may depend on the values of those variables. When the Oracle query optimizer chooses the execution plan for such a query, it may indeed look at the values of all bind variables involved: this is known as "bind variable peeking".
In summary, the execution plan used for a given SQL query cannot be predicted a priori because it depends on the presence and quality of statistics and on the values of bind variables used at the time the query was first executed (hard-parsed). As a consequence of this instability of execution plans, very different performances may be observed for the same SQL query. In COOL, this issue is addressed by adding Oracle hints to the queries, to make sure that the same (good) plan is used in all cases, even with unreliable statistics or unfavourable bind variables.

  • Upgrade steps needed - Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g in RHEL 4

    Hello,
Am in the process of upgrading oracle 10g with 10.1.4.3 IDM,10.1.0.5 DB and 10.1.4.2 portal version to Oracle 11g. Now I see that there are some compatibilities in the OS. I have RHEL 4 and when I check the compatibility guide I see that it is possible to install/upgrade the oracle to 11g. But am worried on the kernel and packages which is needed for Oracle 11g. If there is any step by step assistance on this please guide me. Also I have an another query can I upgrade the OS RHEL 4 to RHEL 5 and then Oracle 10g to Oracle 11g. Will I be seeing any issue after the OS upgrade with product upgrade. Kindly advise me.
    R/Ganesh

This is all about libraries, some libraries between RHEL 4 and 5 had change and this may lead to malfunction of some products, cause they have been copiled using old libraries that doesn't exist now, even I think in the upgradres there are compatibility modes where let you keep old libraries, anyway seems a difficult thing to do. If you plan to move RHEL 4 to 5, I think this is your first step and then install again the Portal in the old version, and then make the upgrade, If you make this step by step, as firts install RHEL 5, install db, install portal, upgrade DB and finaly upgrade portal, would be easier. • Upgrade Oracle from Oracle9i to Oracle 10g

    Hi,
We will be having a project on upgrading the existing version of Oracle 9i to 10g.
Our application uses Java as the front end and Oracle as the backend.
So if anyone has done similar kind of Oracle upgrade from 9i to 10g, could you please tell us –
    1) What are the steps involved in upgrading Java drivers (if any).
    2) Also any other changes to be made on Java front.
    Thank you,
    DNN

    I have the following queries:
    1. Does any third-party application running on Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition need to be changed when we migrate from 9i database server to Oracle Standard One Edition 10g?
    2. What's the difference between Oracle 9i Enterprise and Oracle Standard One Edition 10g?
    3. We are using Oracle 9i Database on a server with Oracle 9i Client on nodes with third-party software. When we upgrade our 9i server to 10g, can we connect to 10g from our existing 9i client nodes? Slowly we can upgrade all 9i clients to 10g clients. Otherwise, all the machines in the company need to be changed to 10g client and work will suffer a lot, as this upgrade job cannot be done in a single day.

ECC 5 is based on kernel 6.40 which is not (yet) released for Windows 2008.
See also note 1054740 - SAP System Installation on Windows Server 2008
I would recommend installing on Windows 2003 and later upgrade your system to Windows 2008 when kernel 6.40 is available.
