  • Oracle Active Dataguard 11g - Passwords

    Hi all
    Environment description: Production database, 11.2.0.3 version, standalone running on Solaris and an Oracle Active Dataguard database in read only mode, same version and operating system.
    Question: The users passwords and sys/system passwrod (orapw ) could be different in the ADG environment? I mean, could the orapwd file and user password be changed in the Dataguard database ?
    Thanks a lot.

    Please suggest a good step by step guide to implement Oracle Active Dataguard on Oracle 11g, OS : RHEL 5.4
    Have searched a couple of documents, but ending up with physical or logical dataguard setup guides...
    Please suggest end to end steps guide for Active Dataguard Implementation

    ThanksHi,
    Active dataguard is option after configuring dataguard.
    You can put standby database in Open(read only) mode also you can enable Recover(MRP) while open so this can be used for reporting purpose too.
    Please refer below links for configuring them.

  • Concept about Query Scn in Dataguard in Oracle 11g

    What are the details concepts behind the’ query scn’ in Dataguard in Oracle 11g. I read the concept from Oracle Datagaurd 11g Handbook but it was not clear for me.

    It's the highest SCN to which data is synchronised between the primary and secondary in a way that the secondary guaranteed read-consistent. It's therefore not possible to query an active standby for data modified after that SCN. At any given time, there might be transactions committed on the primary but not yet shipped or applied to the standby. You're not allowed to see those on the secondary. Not sure how much more detailed you want to get, really.

  • Oracle 11g RAC on Windows 2008 R2 VMware EXS 3.5 virtual machines

    Hi,
    We are planning to Install Oracle 11g R2 RAC on two VMware EXS 3.5 Windows 2008 R2 servers.
    Having trouble while assigning the storage to the servers, the Raw Device Mapping feature in the VMware is greyed out and we cannot assign the disks to the Virtual servers, the disks are allocated to the Vmware Host machine from the SAN (HP EVA).
    Please guide me the best approach for the RAC configuration on VMware EXS 3.5 Win 2008 R2 Guest servers.
    any help will be highly appreceiated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Is this implementation to production environment?
    Be aware:
    Is Oracle RAC on VMware supported? No, we do not support Oracle Software including Oracle RAC on VMWare.
    Aside from the support restrictions for the database on VMWare outlined in Metalink Note 249212.1, there are technical restrictions that prevent the certification of Oracle RAC in a VMWare environment.

  • Rebuild Oracle 11g R1 clustered DB

    I have oracle 11g R1 clustered(two nodes) on Linux boxes, with ASM. Now the cluster is down due to lost connection to SAN. We might not be able to restore the SAN the way as it was, meaning we lost all datafiles(diskgroup). I can not start cluster, asm and DB.
    We have backup(rman and export) from production. I'm trying to find the best way to rebuild this clustered database.
    Thank you for your help!

We might not be able to restore the SAN the way as it was, meaning we lost all datafiles(diskgroup). I can not start cluster, asm and DB.Where the backup is exist? is it also in disk groups or local file system?
    We have backup(rman and export) from production. I'm trying to find the best way to rebuild this clustered database.After setting up everything like, creating disk groups, You can go with two options. However you have backup of RMAN & EXPORT
    1) export/import
    You can create a RAC database using DBCA and then import the dumpfile.
    2) RMAN.
    You can restore the database on one node, later you can covnert this database as RAC

  • Requeriments OS for installation Oracle 11g RAC  in Windows 2003

    I plan to install Oracle 11g Standard with RAC in Windows 2003 Server.
    I will use 2 nodes with the same OS.
    I will use a SAN with fibre channel, to store the DB.
    It is possible to install Oracle RAC in W2003 Standard ?
    I need obligatory W2003 Enterprise?
    The cluster of the 2 nodes is made by OS or by Oracle Clusterware?
    Thanks in advance.

    You can install on Windows 2003 Standard, it works with this OS. On the other hand the cluster is configured by the oracle clusterware. You need to make absolutely sure you are able to write from both nodes to the shared storage. Specific details on the regedit parameters you have to configure and specific OS issues are detailed at the above reference Werner posted.

  • Oracle 11g R2 Instance Caging on Linux 64-bit? Good, Bad, Ugly.

    Hello everyone
    I hope this is the correct forum, if not please advise best place to post this question.
    I am thinking of using Oracle 11g R2 Enterprise Edition running on 64-bit Linux server (Oracle Linux 6.x or Red Hat Linux 6.x) with Resource Manager Instance Caging feature enabled to consolidate about 20 databases on one larger Intel-X64 server (40 cores, 512RB RAM, SAN). RAC is not needed but RAC One Node may be one other possible option as will also be Data Guard 11g R2 for HA/DR.
    I am looking for opinions from those who have used and implemented Instance Caging feature in production on 11g R1 or 11g R2 on Linux/UNIX 64-bit OS - please share your experiences - good, bad, ugly ?
    Any recent whitepapers and studies on 11g R2? I have seen some information dating back to 11g R1 (~2009), hoping there are some 11g R2 updates on this topic for 2010-2012.
    Please provide pointers if you know of any.
    Has anyone implemented Instance Caging on RAC One Node (or full RAC)? Opinions?
    thanks.

  • 11g DataGuard

    Hi all,
    I followed "http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/oracle-database-11g-top-features/11g-dataguard.html" to setup 11g standby database. In point 9, it required to start standby database in NOMOUNT mode. However I got the following error:

    Hi,
    Check for the Listener Status... and also for the entries in litener.ora files
    Also at the same time check for entries in the tnsnames.ora and check whether they are correctly mentioned or not..
    tnsping <service_name> see if it is able to resolve the alias.....

  • How to deploy oracle 11g under cold failover cluster

    Hi,
    I am trying to install oracle 11g under failover cluster environments. I am trying to find some oracle documentation about it. But not able to find one. Can anyone help me. Please i need it badly.
    we have two servers sun solaris 10. on which we have failover cluster being installed. one is active while one is passive. How can i install oracle 11g on this failover clusters. did i have to install oracle of shared SAN. what are the extra configuration i have to do please help
    Also is it wise to install 11g warehouse with fail safe or use RAC.
    regards
    Nick

    thanks alot for reply.
    I am of the same point of view. but the machine i am working on is sun solaris 10 with two partitions finance and accounts which have been protected by a failed over machine having two partitions finance and accounts and i think you are right these are the same shared storage folder which are mounted on active machine as well as on passive machine.
    Now my question is if i install oracle 11g on one machine without oracle cluster then sun cluster should be able to mount the database in case the primary machine fails.
    I have tried hard to get some documentation on this top but nothing so far. please help

  • Oracle 11g benefits

    Hello Guys
    Oracle 11g new features notes as found on web very generic
    if i want to convince my client to switch from oracle 10g to oracle 11g,this information will not be useful
    if you had migrated to 11g and worked on it,please reply practical reasons from dba point of view
    how customer will be benefited from migrating from oracle 10 g to 11g
    like if i mentioned to him ADR feature it doesnt makes sense to him
    Active dataguard may be one of feature but will be have any benefit where dataguard is implemented
    still to application guys also it will give any advantage
    say for example i am discussing this with Application team head ,how will he benefit from migrating to 11g
    what feature will be benefitted to him and how
    will this feature will be appealing enough to efforts in migration
    thanks
    cheers

    In my opinion, the best way to convince them is to do an assessment for their particular environment, based on the specifics.
    For example, I've done such one for a database and here are some of the points:
    1. Almost 30%(as reported by Grid Control) of frequently executed queries are on tables like XX.XXXX and YY.YYYYY. These tables are relatively small and statements , and functions on them are good candidates for modification to use :
    Query Results Cache and PL/SQL Function Result Cache (Oracle 11G Enterprise Edition option, no extra cost needed).
    2. From time to time we experience sudden execution plan changes and get worse plans. This degrades applications' performance orders of magnitude. Oracle 11g has a new built-in feature called "SQL Plan Management". As described in the docs:
    "SQL plan management prevents performance regressions resulting from sudden changes to the execution plan of a SQL statement by providing components for capturing, selecting, and evolving SQL plan information. If you are performing a database upgrade that installs a new optimizer version, it can result in plan changes for a small percentage of SQL statements, with most of the plan changes resulting in either no performance change or improvement. However, certain plan changes may cause performance regressions.
    With SQL plan management, the optimizer automatically manages execution plans and ensures that only known or verified plans are used. When a new plan is found for a SQL statement, the plan is not used until it has been verified by the database to have comparable or better performance than the current plan. This means if you seed SQL plan management with your current (pre-11g) execution plan, which will become the SQL plan baseline for each statement, the optimizer uses these plans after the upgrade. If the 11g optimizer determines that a different plan should be used, the new plan is queued for verification and will not be used until it has been confirmed to have comparable or better performance than the current plan."
    I don't expect this to be perfect but at least it will decrease the number of such problematic periods.
    3. 10g Recovery Manager doesn't support parallelism per datafile. In our environment we have several 30+GB datafiles and since our storage system is not very fast for such type of operations, non-parallel restore of a single datafile will take much more time compared to the same activity on 11g. 11g supports RMAN datafile restore in parallel.
    4. Several optimizations in optimizer work. One of them is better handling of full scans:
    We've done some tests 10g/11g and were surprised because of this direct path read/db file scattered reads thing. Our tests are:
    Two databases - one 11g and one 10g with same sga_target,sga_max_size(500MB) and pga_aggregate_target(200MB), everything else is as it is set during install by DBCA. These two databases run on one host.
    The storage is a NAS(6 discs) managed by 11g ASM (one normal redundancy diskgroup ) which is used by the databases.
    I imported a 3GB table on every database and gathered stats. To not go in detail as of now, the results are:
    three consecutive runs on 11g.
    average execution time - 50 seconds
    three consecutive runs on 10g.
    average execution time - 125 seconds
    The statement is:
    select /*+ full(t) nocache(t) */ count(1) from zz.zzz t;
    and there is no other activity on the host and the storage.
    Same number of logical and physical reads during 11g and 10g runs.
    During the above runs while run on:
    11g, iostat reports ~14MB/s per disk
    10g, iostat reports ~5MB/s per disk
    After tracing these sessions we figured out that on 11g direct path read is used, while 10g uses db file scattered read.
    5. We can use AUDIT_SYS_OPERATIONS in conjunction with XML,EXTENDED for auditing purposes. 10.2.0.4 has a bug for this that is fix in 11.1.0.6 onwards.
    6. Database Resident Connection Pooling(Concepts guide 11g documentation)
    "Database Resident Connection Pooling (DRCP) provides a connection pool in the database server for typical Web application usage scenarios. DRCP pools dedicated servers, which comprise of a server foreground combined with a database session, to create pooled servers.
    A Web application typically acquires a database connection, uses the connection for a short period, and then releases the connection. DRCP enables multiple Web application threads and processes to share the pooled servers for their connection needs.
    DRCP complements middle-tier connection pools that share connections between threads in a middle-tier process. DRCP also enables you to share database connections across multiple middle-tier processes. These middle-tier processes may belong to the same or different middle-tier host.
    DRCP enables a significant reduction in key database resources that are required to support a large number of client connections. DRCP reduces the amount of memory required for the database server and boosts the scalability of both the database server and the middle-tier. The pool of readily available servers also reduces the cost of re-creating client connections.
    DRCP is especially useful for architectures with multi-process, single-threaded application servers, such as PHP and Apache servers, that cannot do middle-tier connection pooling. The database can scale to tens of thousands of simultaneous connections with DRCP."
    It will help us to improve dedicated server usage(currently we use shared server).
    7. A lot of bug fixes for bugs that don't have 10g patches , fixed in 11g only and affect us - examples XML,EXTENDED and AUDIT_SYS_OPERATIONS bug, FGA bugs, job system on logical standby database , "ORA-12569: TNS:packet checksum failure" during sqlplus login and so on.
    It's for sure that there are much more such convincing points, but a several days assessment will make it possible to identify the most important ones from performance/availability/security perspective for their environment. As it is often the case - the devil is in the details. It's all about the way they use the database.

  • Major performance trouble Oracle 11g  RHELx64, HP 8100 storage

    Hi hope some one can help me with this.
    We have a datawarehouse with this configuratuion
    Database
    RHEL5 u5 on 2* intel 5700 cpu, 36gb ram, emulex 4gb dual port hba, HP EVA 8100 san.
    Oracle 11g 11.1.7.
    Database 8 kblock
    Disks are
    /data 2.0TB 72 disks formated with ext3 4k block.
    /log 100GB 72 disks formated with ext3 4k block.
    ETL
    Informatica Power Center 8.6 on similar machine.
    My problem is vhen we try to load the database with data it takes forever so we tested this stuff
    iops script run
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    DECLARE
    lat INTEGER;
    iops INTEGER;
    mbps INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    -- DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CALIBRATE_IO (<DISKS>, <MAX_LATENCY>, iops, mbps, lat);
    DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CALIBRATE_IO (72, 10, iops, mbps, lat);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('max_iops = ' || iops);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE ('latency = ' || lat);
    dbms_output.put_line('max_mbps = ' || mbps);
    end;
    Results
    Warehouse database about 600GB data in it
    max_iops = 82
    latency = 11
    max_mbps = 204
    LOW!!!
    I installed a new database with just the exaple schemas on same disk /data and got theese results
    max_iops = 25665
    latency = 8
    max_mbps = 517
    Any one have some ideas what i should test or change?
    /Jens Bäckström (Noob)Dba

    The second database IOTEST is a small test db.
    This is how i did the test
    i stopped the DWRPD01 wich is the dw database.
    i start the IOTEST DATABSE and run the iops script.
    after the run i stoped IOTEST and started DWPRD02 and run the same script.
    i am sure the database files was on the same san disk group . but ofc i can not besure that the data be on the same physical disk in the SAN cabinett.
    Ill check ur other questions as soon as i have some ansvers
