Oracle 11g - How to repair block corruption(on free space) in datafile
Hi,
I have a tablesopace with 3 datafiles, out of which one datafile has corrupted block. But no objects or data is affected as the corrupted block os in free space. This was shown in the alert logs.
Please see below the details:

================================================================
The corruption is being reported in a free space block of the ORDER_DATA_01.DBF.
I’ve checked all the tables (and indexes) in this tablespace and none report corruption.
=====================================================Is there any action I need to take to remove corruption at this point?It is not affected any operation on the database yet.
What is the best way to do get rid of the corrupt block, without dropping and rebuillding the full tablespace(which is around 6 GB -total of 3 datafiles)
Thanks a lot
Can RMAN recover the datablock from this cold backup(which is a week old, the data file was not corrupted then) ?Please note that to do the recovery, you would need the backup and the archivelog files since the backup. Think about what you are asking to do. Its a single block whose recovery you are asking from a week old backup which obviously would be on an much older SCN compared to the rest of the database. How would you make that block consistent with the rest of the datafile. If you don't have archivelog in that db whose block is corrupted, you may forget that block and any data that it might ever had. Also, please read the documentation about the block recovery which explains the requirements very clearly,
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmblock.htm#BRADV89784
From the above link, 1st point,
The target database must run in ARCHIVELOG mode and be open or mounted with a current control file.HTH

Block corruption in Free Space
Hi,
Environment:-
Oralce 10.2.0
Windows platform
I am facing problem of Logical block corruption.
RMAN validate block corruption (DBVerify as well) But no entry in Alert log file.
When I check Which segment has block corruption I found that block corruption are in free blocks of tablespace (DBA_FREE_SPACE).
To Fix it I create table and allocate corrupted block to that table. I confirm corrupted block allocation in table (using DBA_EXTENTS).
But when I insert rows in that table to reuse corrupted block Oracle give error of ora-1578 Block corruption, and I am not able to reuse corrupted block(as many expert suggest to overcome block corruption in free space).
I dropped table and recreate and repeat this process many times but still no success.
So. can anybody help me on this.
I appreciate your efforts and time you spend to read this
ThanksHello,
Please check the link i posted.
Example: Detecting Corruption
The CHECK_OBJECT procedure checks the specified object, and populates the repair table with information about corruptions and repair directives. You can optionally specify a range, partition name, or subpartition name when you want to check a portion of an object.
Validation consists of checking all blocks in the object that have not previously been marked corrupt. For each block, the transaction and data layer portions are checked for self consistency. During CHECK_OBJECT, if a block is encountered that has a corrupt buffer cache header, then that block is skipped.
The following is an example of executing the CHECK_OBJECT procedure for the scott.dept table.
SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
DECLARE num_corrupt INT;
BEGIN
num_corrupt := 0;
DBMS_REPAIR.CHECK_OBJECT (
SCHEMA_NAME => 'SCOTT',
OBJECT_NAME => 'DEPT',
REPAIR_TABLE_NAME => 'REPAIR_TABLE',
CORRUPT_COUNT => num_corrupt);
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('number corrupt: ' || TO_CHAR (num_corrupt));
END;
SQL*Plus outputs the following line, indicating one corruption:
number corrupt: 1 -
Block Corruption In Free Space Chuck Of A Datafile
Hi all,
I have run into this issue where both dbv and rman have caught a block corruption on one of the datafiles. When I checked these blocks, they did not belong to any segments and I was able to verify that this block ID falls in the block_id + blocks range in the dba_free_space where file_id = 41.
My questions are ...
- why is rman complaining about a bad block in free space? It will never need to back it up any way?
- According to note 28814.1, this type of corruption can be ignored and if when oracle needs to use this block, it will simply create/rewrite a new image without the corrupted data. Have you been affected by this issue? If yes, what did you do?
Thank you1. "why is rman complaining about a bad block in free space? It will never need to back it up any way?"
Because it is doing its job.
2. "Have you been affected by this issue? If yes, what did you do?"
In what version? I generally find it helpful to read the docs and check discussions of issues on metalink. -
How RMAN detect block corruption
Hi,
how RMAN detect block corruption( means how RMAN work internally to find corrupted block).
thanks.There are initialization parameters (like DB_BLOCK_CHECKING) which will detect block corruption on block access. Go through the following link also:

And where exactly the spfile will be located?
My instance is EPM11 in my local oracle is present in D folder where can i found the pfile?
In this path i found 1 pfile in my Local Machine

# Archive Log Destinations -benr(10/15/04)
log_archive_dest_1='location=/u02/oradata/cuddle/archive'
log_archive_start=TRUE
Then i have ran the shutdown command.
Database instance is showtdown.
After that i am not able to perform startup.
So please suggest me how to change the mode using SPfile and tell me the path where spfile and pfile should be located?

How do I set aside 1G free space for a game?
Trying to install civ4- how do I set aside 1G free space for a game?
if your son is set as a child under your Family Share settings you should be able to turn on "Ask permission" for purchases. If you do have that on I don't know why it's not prompting him to ask.
Another way to stop in-app-purchases is to set restriction on his iOS device. (Turn off in-app-purchases under General/Restrictions) -

How to repair a corrupted word 2013 document?
Yesterday I was working on a very important Microsoft Word (2013) document, when it suddenly crashed. Upon trying to reopen the file Word said: “The
file is corrupted and cannot be opened”. I have tried all of the other methods of restoring it, such as opening it in a different program, or opening it and choosing "open and repair" in MS Word.When a Word document file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
1. First of all, you can try the recovery function integrated with Microsoft Word, as follows:
1) On the File menu, click Open.
2) In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file that you want to open.
3) In the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the file.
4) Select the file that you want to recover.
5) Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
You may find more information about this at:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-the-text-from-a-damaged-document-HP005189610.aspx (for Word 2003)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893672/en-us (for Word 2007/2010/2013)
2. Second, since Word 2003, it provides a "Document Recovery" or "AutoRecover" mechanism so that when Word is shutdown abnormally, the Word file being edited will be recovered when Word is launched next time, which makes the file recovery possible.
See below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316951/

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-your-office-files-HP010354299.aspx

for more detailed information.
3. If 1 and 2 does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Word Repair at
http://www.datanumen.com/word-repair/
It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.
Good luck! -
How to repair a corrupt VHDX or extract data from it?
I have a virtualized Exchange 2013 server on Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2 virtual disks (C: OS drive and D: Exchange database and log files). After a power failure, the virtual server will not start because the second VHDX drive (the one with the databases
and log files) is corrupt and unreadable. If I remove the second VHDX, it will start successfully but the Exchange DB's are on the corrupt VHDX.
Nothing worked from other posts and some of the stuff will not work for the VHDX that people are posting for VHD's. I have tried mounting it on a host machine but it errors out saying it is corrupt and unreadable. I have tried to convert it to a VHD but
it does not work because it is corrupt and unreadable.
Anyone have any other ideas? I thought the whole idea of the VHDX was to prevent this from happening?!?
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.Hi Purvis13,
Please try to retore the VHD from a backup .
I'm afraid there is not yet a tool to repair the corrupted VHDX file at present .
(maybe some 3rd party software can do that)

How to calculate the percentage of free space for a table in Oracle
okay, I am a little confused here. I have been searching the web and looking at a lot of documents. What I basically want to find out is this, how do I calculate the difference between the number of bytes a table is using and the total bytes allocated to a table space (going that way to get percent free for a particular table). So I need a byte count of a table and total table space and the percentage difference. I have been looking at the DBA_TABLES DBA_TABLESPACES and DBA_SEGMENTS views. I have tried to calculated the space as num_rows * avg_row_len (if I am wrong, let me know). I have been trying to compare that calculation to the number in DBA_TABLESPACES and DBA_SEGMENTS. I am just looking for the total space allocated to the table space that the table sits in (seem logical right now) to make the percentage value work. Thus I want to be able to track the table as it grows as compated to the table space it sits in to see a value as it changes over time (days, weeks, etc.) each time I run this script I am working on.
Can someone get me straight and help me to find out if I am looking in the right places. Any advice would help.

I use this to find the space allocations.
Just read your post again,this is not going to show you the percentage of the free/used space. This is going to be the number of blocks which are free/used. For the growth trend, you can look at (in 10g) Oracle EM. It has added now,Segment Growth Trend report which can show you for each object,comparing to the allocated space to the object,how much space is being used by it.
