Backup db using expdb/impdb (Oracle 11g Windows 2003)
Hi Guys,
I'm currently doing backups using expdb/impdb due to problems we have with BackupExec when I use RMAN. But what I want to find out is that would you call expdb/impdb a hot or a cold backup? Or should I say what happens when the user is trying to access the database while expdb/impdb is in progress?
Thank you.expdp is not consider any form of backup. It's just an alternate way to export the data into dump files and import when required. You can not do any sort of recovery with expdp dumps.
depends on number of CPU's you have and number of parallel threads you are using, users may experience spikes in the busy database.

Change IP Address on Oracle 9i Windows 2003/2008 Server
If I will change the IP Address on an Oracle 9i windows 2003 Server, in a client/server environment, will that cause problems in the database.
Ofcource I will change the lisner.ora script IP address and I will make new alias names on the clients.
Thanks in advance
DimitriosDear Dimitrios!
If you have a DNS-Server in your network then it should be very easy to change your IP-Address because Oracle uses DNS-Names in its configuration. Therefore you don't have to change the Oracle configurationfiles tnsnames.ora and listener.ora. If you don't use DNS then there also shouldn't be any problems if you change your IP-Address in the tnsnames.ora and the listener.ora files.
Yours sincerely

Oracle 11g - External Table/SQL Developer Issue?
==============================
I hope this is the right forum for this issue, if not let me, where to go.
We are using Oracle 11g (11.2.0.1.0) on (Platform : solaris[tm] oe (64-bit)), Sql Developer 3.0.04
We are trying to use oracle external table to load text files in .csv format. Here is our data look like.

Our Expernal table structures is as follows
CREATE TABLE P_LOAD
DATE1 VARCHAR2(10),
DATE2 VARCHAR2(10),
POL_PRTY VARCHAR2(30),
P_NAME VARCHAR2(30),
P_ROLE VARCHAR2(5)
ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL

P_NAME CHAR (30) Terminated by "," OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' ,
P_ROLE CHAR (5) Terminated by ","
LOCATION ('Input.dat')
REJECT LIMIT UNLIMITED;
It created successfully using SQL Developer
Here is the issue.
It is not loading the records, where fields are enclosed in '"' (Rec # 2,3,4,7)
It is loading all NULL value record (Rec # 6)
*** If we remove the '"' from input data, it loads all records including all NULL records
Log file has
KUP-04021: field formatting error for field P_NAME
KUP-04036: second enclosing delimiter not found
KUP-04101: record 2 rejected in file ....
Our questions
Why did "REJECT ROWS WITH ALL NULL FIELDS" not working?
Why did Terminated by "," OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' not working?
Any idea?
Thanks in helping.I don't think this is a SQLDeveloper issue. You will get better answers in the Database - General or perhaps SQL and PL/SQL forums.

Send encrypted data from oracle 11g to Ms SQL Server 12
Hi every body,
we want to send encrypted data from oracle 11g to Ms SQL Server 12:
- data are encrypted to oracle
- data should be sent encrypted to Ms SQL server
- data will be decrypted in Ms SQL server by sensitive users.
How can we do this senario, any one has contact simlare senario?
can we use asymetric encription to do this senario?
Please Help!!
Thanks in advance.Hi,
What you want to do about copying data from Oracle to SQL*Server using insert will work with the 12c gateway. There was a problem trying to do this using the 11.2 gateway but it should be fixed with the 12c gateway.
If 'insert' doesn't work then you can use the SQLPLUS 'copy' command, for example -
SQL> COPY FROM SCOTT/TIGER@ORACLEDB -
INSERT SCOTT.EMP@MSQL -
USING SELECT * FROM EMP
There is further information in this note available on My Oracle Support -
Copying Data Between an Oracle Database and Non-Oracle Foreign Data Stores or Databases Using Gateways (Doc ID 171790.1)
However, if the data is encrypted already in the Oracle database then it will be sent in the encrypted format. The gateway cannot decrypt the data before it is sent to SQL*Server.
There is no specific documentation about the gateways and TDE. TDE encrypts the data as it is in the Oracle database but I doubt that SQL*Server will be able to de-encrypt the Oracle data if it is passed in encrypted format and as far as I know it is not designed to be used for non-Oracle databases.
The Gateway encrypts data as it is sent across the network for security but doesn't encrypt the data at source in the same way as TDE does.

Proper installation on Windows 2003 - SQL Server - SSIS Package
We are attempting to access an Oracle 10g database from a SQL Server 2005 installation through SSIS (Windows 2003 x64). Our admin has installed the Oracle 11g client tools, we are developing in VS2008 (on XP x86). We seem to be connecting to the server through VS, but when running the package on the server we get errors as follows:

We suspect the issue is in the initial installation steps. (BTW - we used a TNSNAMES.ORA that worked on our local machines.)
Can anyone help? The errors you are showing are Microsoft errors not Oracle errors. You should take this up with Microsoft support.

10g RAC on Oracle VM/Windows 2003 server
Is there any documentation/thread/blog which describes installation of 10g clusterware on Windows 2003 VM on Oracle VM 2.1.2 using just direct attached storage? I created 2 Windows 2003 VMs. For OCR and Voting disks, I created shared virtual disks. These disks are visible from both VMs. When I try to install clusterware, both VMs blue screen about 50% into install. The error in CRS logs points to OCR disks not being in correct format. I have tested same process with VMWare server and it works fine. Do I need to do something different for Oracle VM?
BTW this is not my first time installing RAC on Windows 2003. I have done more installations than I care to remember but always on physical servers. I followed the same process as I do for physical servers but it seems that Oracle VM does not like the shared virtual disks.
Thanks...Check out my articles at http://dbasupport.com on 10g R2 RAC Clusterware setup. I was able to do that on my vmware BUT I hope to have the very irritating ASM scenario done before my 4th Article.
Check it out. -
Need help setting up DB Link from my Oracle 11g XE to SQL Server.
Hi,
I'm trying to create a DB Link from my Oracle 11g Express Edition in a Windows XP machine to an SQL Server. Here are the steps I've done so far.
1. Created and setup an ODBC Connection for the SQL Server DB. Named it SQLSERVER. Windows Authenticated.
2. Modified listener.ora. See below.
