Oracle 32 bit client to connect to a 64 bit database

Hello Folks,
My problems start with installing Informatica and Oracle in my 64 bit machine, both are 64 bit software.
When I open Informatica to connect to Oracle, it opens with a 32 bit ODBC connector.
So, essentially I want to connect to a 64 bit database.
I was told it is possible using a 32 bit Oracle client.
So, now I downloaded the Oracle 11g 32 bit client.
My question is how to connect to use it to connect to a 64 bit database.
Much obliged

Hi,
configure tnsnames.ora at client side....
example: oracle 11g client 32bit
go to oracle home where you have installed oracle 32 bit clinet and then /network/admin directory and then create tnsnames.ora file...
ex:
PROD1_db1=
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = db1.com)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = prod1)
and then configure sqlnet.ora file as well
create sqlnet.ora file at clinet side
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
once above files creation completion try to ping your prod db
ex: your prod database name prod1
tnsping prod1
go to cmd prompt type below
sqlplus usename/pwd@servicenamethanks,
DBC.

  • Oracle 10g client not connecting to Oracle 8i server

    I have oracle 8i server already installed. I downloaded Oracle 10g client recently. I installed it on one machine and trying to connect to 8i server. I used TNSnames.ora which was already present on the machine. After entering the username, password and service name in SQL plus, I got a error saying server version not suported. Does 10g client not support 8i server or am I doing something wrong ?

    There is an 8.1.7.4 patchset for Windows.
    If you take a look at the Instant Client forum, there are some discussions on this where one of the Oracle product managers (Mr. Jue) has chimed in. At present, only connections to 8.1.7.4 and higher are supported. It is expected that the first 10g patchset will fix this bug and allow connections to 8.1.7.0 and above databases.

    Thank you very much srini.
    Actually the answer is it's a big organization, not that easy to upgrade to latest version. So currently using the old one.
    They didn't find it so difficult to upgrade the OS to a bleeding edge version .... so why do they find it difficult to upgrade the Oracle client?  Are they also running MS Office 95, "because it's not so easy to upgrade"?
    In big organizations, new desktops are built from an image, and that image can just as easily be built with a newer version of Oracle client, if need be.

  • Cannot Install 11g 64 bit client on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit OS

    I am trying to install Oracle 11g 64 bit client on Windows 7 64 Bit Professional. I'm running setup as administrator and all prerequisites fail with Actual Value not Found Expected value not found. I select ignore and press next and the application just silently shuts down. Log is too big so here is an abbreviated log.
    Here is the installation log

    I disagree with your assessment, for two reasons.
    One is the severity for RAM is listed as Severity:IGNORABLE.
    Secondly I just saw this happen to myself just a moment ago (which is how I found this threat) as well using a silent install on a Windows 2008r2 server I can install to using the setup.exe manually. so disk and memory really isn't an issue.
    I suspect something else is going on here. If you read those warnings the Critical they are just the last two about disk space and the PATH variable. Perhaps I am not running as elevated as I thought or the C$ share is not reach able. I am going to keep trying and will report back here when I get my silent install working.

    I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database from Windows 7 OS - 64 bit using
    Access 2010 32 bit and Oracle 32 bit client version 10.2.0.1 installed on PC.
    My user requires a 64 bit Windows 7 OS for other needs.
    Oracle ODBC driver is 32 bit from Oracle 32 bit client.
    In Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ODBC DSN setup software is located in:
    C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe for 64 bit drivers - all DSN types setup and
    C:\Windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe for 32 bit drivers - USER DSN setup
    When I run the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I see the Version number is 6.1.7601.17632
    I setup a User DSN using the 32 bit odbcad32.exe with a 32 bit ODBC driver.
    Our Oracle TNSnames.ora file has our standard entries which have worked for years
    (Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
    So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
    But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
    1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
    2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
    3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
    4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
    ODBC call failed
    [Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0
             [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)
    I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
    I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
    reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
    I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
    Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

    Thank you for your reply.
    I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
    I found this small comment:
    “There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
    It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
    I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
    When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
    We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
    I tried it and it solved the problem!
    With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
    it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.
    Solved.

    12154 means the client couldn't resolve what you filled in for Data Source. What did you fill in for Data Source when configuring the OLEDB connection? It looks like "nitro" should be the correct thing to fill in, based on your statement that the ODBC DSN you configured works with it.

  • Problem in connecting to Oracle 8 database through Oracle 11g client ?

    Database : Oracle 8
    Client Machine :
    Oracle 11g

    Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle
    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 11g client to connect Oracle 8 database using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle but I am getting error when after entered the password
    Run-time error '40002':
    IM006: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed
    I am using VB6 application on Windows 7 and I created DSN using Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle but I got the above error when I try to connect to Database.
    Please help me out on this that why this error is coming
    Thanks
    Amit Panwar

    Provided its a 32-bit application, possibly. Microsoft ODBC for Oracle is discontinued and has no 64-bit version, so a 64-bit application won't be able to use it at all.
    I do see it listed as a 32-bit ODBC driver on my Windows 7. The problem is that I think it relies on having an Oracle client installed on the machine, and you've got the same problem of Oracle client 11 not working with 8 server. You could try it and see if it works I suppose, or try installing an older client and see if that makes it work.
    If it's just for testing purposes though you could throw up an Oracle XE server and test against that.

  • Installing Oracle 11g client 32 bit, on a windows 64 bit platform

    Hi all,
    I was searching the forum and came and found out that PL/SQL developer is only 32 bit for the time being and can only be used with a 32 bit oracle client. I need to use PL/SQL developer so I want to know that will a 32 bit client work perfectly with the 64 bit windows 7? Or will there be any issues?
    Thanks

    hi,
    Thanks for your support, but these notes are not opening up.
    i went to this link https://blogs.oracle.com/db/entry/master_note_for_oracle_database_client_installation_id_11574631
    but whenever i open the note i get the error,
    Failure of server APACHE bridge:
    No backend server available for connection: timed out after 10 seconds or idempotent set to OFF.
    Kindly help me if i'm missing something here.

  • Database connection encryption and integrity with ColdFusion and Oracle thin client

    As ColdFusion datasource we are using the Oracle thin client to  connect with the database. So, basically we are using a JDBC URL such as  jdbc:oracle:thin:@... and as Driver Class oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver. This works successfully however we would like to set encryption and  integrity parameters as well. In Java this is done similarly by setting a  Properties object prior to getting a connection as follows:
    Properties prop = new Properties();
    prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_client", "REQUIRED");
    prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_types_client", "( DES40 )");
    prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_client", "REQUESTED");
    prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_types_client", "( MD5 )");
    OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
    ods.setProperties(prop);
    ods.setURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:main");
    Connection conn = ods.getConnection();
    Is there a way that I can pass these parameters to the ColdFusion  datasource. Ideally, I would love to do this centrally in such way that a  change to all the cfquery or cfstoredproc is not needed.
    I also know that in application servers such as Oracle AS there is an  option when creating a datasource which says "Add Properties". In there  you can add such properties. So, I was thinking of maybe creating a  JNDI DS in the app. server and then magically connecting to it but this  may have some impacts on the app.
    Besides this I was also thinking of communicating with the CF  datasource through the CF admin API (cfide.adminapi.administrator) and  also the option of extending the Oracle driver so that when CF connects  with it these params are already set.
    I would love to have your professional opinion and suggestions on this.

    I believe the thin driver actually needs the IP address (not the DNS name). Also, is "java" the name of the Oracle instance to which you are trying to connect?
    Try the following:String driver = "jdbc:oracle:thin";
    String dbIP = "W2RZ1NXG01's IP address";
    String dbPort = "1530";
    String dbSid = "java";
    String dbUser = "Admin";
    String dbPswd = "apassword";
    String cnctStr = driver + ":@" + dbIP + ":" + port + ":" + dbSid;
    try
        Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
        con = DriverManager.getConnection( cnctStr, dbUser, dbPswd );
        stmt = con.createStatement();
        stmt.executeUpdate(createString);
        stmt.close();
        con.close();
    catch(SQLException ex)
        System.err.println( "The following SQLException occurred: " + ex );
        System.err.println( "Message: " + ex.getMessage() );

  • Deinstall Oracle 11g client hangs on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit

    Hi,
    I am trying to dinstall Oracle 11g client on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit but the process hangs when it reaches the following:
    Removing Windows and .NET products configuration START
    It just hangs there for ever!
    Checking the log file C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs\winprod_cleanup.out and I can see the last thing in there is ""Deconfiguring ODP.NET Component...""
    Any idea what could be the reason?

    I was able to resolve it...Apparently I was logged on as administrator when I invoked deinstall which caused it to hang when it came to the part where it was getting ready to deinstall the .NET components...I logged off and loged in as myself and invoked the deinstall and it completed successfully...

  • Oracle 10g client connect to oracle 11g server

    Hi All,
    In my system, i have installed oracle 11g server(11.1.0.6.0). while i try to connect to this server by 10g client in my friends system,which is in the same network,it is showing
    ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist,
    then i tried with other system (using oracle10g client), its showing
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    then i tried with one another system (using oracle 9i client) -- its is connected.
    what may be the problem. not connecting using oracle 10g client. and also different error.

    Hi,

    If so then which are the client version will connect to oracle11g server(11.1.0.6.0).A 10.2 client will connect to an 11.x database, but the sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files must be configured correctly. The errors you reported are not uncommon and have been diagnosed repeatedly on this forum. Let's not confuse the issue by comparing / copying files from various machines, as that has already created a moving target of error messages.
    On the client that is exhibiting the problem ...
    Do you have a single ORACLE_HOME? A single TNSNAMES.ORA?
    On that machine, at a command prompt, do a tnsping on the service in question. Also try to connect with sqlplus. Copy the entire session -- commands and results -- and paste it all back here.
    On the server machine, log on as the owner of the oracle software, and at a command prompt enter the command "lsnrctl status". Again, Copy the entire session -- commands and results -- and paste it all back here.

  • Conflict between 32-bit and 64-bit clients

    We are running 64-bit Windows and Oracle. We have 32-bit application which is loading data into Oracle. To have it working, we have installed 32-bit Oracle client. It modified PATH environment variable by adding path to 32-bit client in front of it. After that, 32-bit app started to connect to Oracle fine.
    But we also have Java application which connects to Oracle using OCI8 JDBC URL. JRE is 64-bit. It tries to load OCI DLLs and fails because in PATH path to 32-bit client appear before path to 64-bit client. If we will reverse their order, 32-bit application will stop working.
    We have tried setting ORACLE_HOME environment variable locally in command prompt before calling 32-bit app or 64-bit Java, but it did not help. We don't want to create ORACLE_HOME permanently. Modifying PATH locally in command prompt helps, and this is the only solution I see. Any other solution you may think of?

    The only other thing I could think of, which is likely less-elegant, is to create a separate user for the Java-based apps and run them under that user via something like runas. I think it would be easier, as you suggested, to modify the PATH (and other related environment variables like ORACLE_HOME) for just the 32-bit one.

  • 32bit client on same box as 64 bit RDBMS - Windows

    I tried doing this on a 64bit box, but couldn't get the 32 bit client to connect to the 64bit listener. I need the 32bit client for 32bit ODBC and another 32 bit app. Can these coexist on the same box? I used different Oracle Homes. I think all I need to do is get the network config tool to link up to it properly, but I don't know how.
    Any thoughts? Worst case would be database reinstall with 32bits.
    Thx
    Jeff

    Hopefully you installed in separate ORACLE_HOMEs.
    How is your firewall configured? Try turning that off totally while testing.
    Each client (and the database install includes a client) has it's own networking configuration. That configuration is in %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin\tnsnames.ora ... I'm guessing you never bothered to configure the TNSNAMES.ORA in the 32 bit directories.
    By the way, it is only polite to provide real detailed operating system information and Oracle software version information when asking technical questions. For some silly reason I can not see your screen and therefore can only guess whether your problem is in configuration or possibly some incompatibility.

    No installer, nothing ...That's the beauty of Instant Client, just unzip or move a few files, set PATH if needed, and you have client libraries all "installed" and ready.

    You can give advice ?Generally, required lib files are (n Windows) oci.dll, oraociicusN.dll or oraocieiN.dll (N= e.g. 11). Then for Sql*plus add orasqlplusicN.dll and the .exe from ic-sqlplus package.

  • Error: OUI.exe Stopped Working 11g R2 32-bit Client on Win 7 64-bit

    I am receiving an error "oui.exe stopped working" when running setup.exe to install Oracle 11g R2 (win32_11gR2_client.zip for Win 32-bit) client on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I never even get as far as the Oracle installation dialog box. I am trying to install 11g R2 32-bit because it is my understanding the 64-bit version of Oracle client is not compatible with Toad for Oracle.
    I have read numerous posts on the subject and have tried just about everything I can think of to get around the error. When I run the setup.exe -debug I can see that teh files are unzipped and the installer seems to fail when it hit the section where it tries executing java.exe. Once the dialog box appears with the error message, I am not able to get back to the command window to extract the debug results. I can only see it partially in the background behind the dialog box. When I hit cancel to close the error dialog, the debug window also closes, so no way to get the details of the debug results
    I am logged into Win 7 as a member of the Adminstrators group and have verified that the Windows User Access Control (UAC) is turned off. I get the erorr message whether I run as Administrator or not. I have unzipped all the files and folders under the \client directory from the zip file to a folder c:\temp\. So the setup.exe and all folders below it are in the c:\temp directory. I did this because one post suggested an issue with long path names or path names with spaces when executing setup.exe.
    Seems like it should not be this difficult. I never had issues in the past installing Oracle client on Windows XP Pro. This is my first attempt at installing under Win 7.
    Any help or direction would be much appreciated.

    orafad and PavanG,
    First let me thank you both for your multiple attempts to help me. I finally figured out what was causing the issue with the Oracle Installer, oui.exe not running properly. Last night I was looking around into the Windows Event Viewer and found an Error entry for oui.exe that pointed to a program directory and .dll in the \\program files\appsense\ directory path. It seems that in addition to the McAfee virus scan, host intrusion, unwanted programs, group policy manager, etc., there is another application installed on the machine that governs what programs can and cannot run. I don't know much about it other than when the program was temporarily suspended, the setup.exe and oui.exe install kicked off fine without the "oui.exe stopped working" error message. It proceeded happily to the Oracle Client installation dialog. All along our IT desktop support was trying to help me with the install and they repeatedly disabled the McAfee programs to no avail, but not the other utilities. It was almost like even they were unaware of this other application running in the background since they never suggested disabling it.
    Either way, I'm happy to say that I am now able to successfully launch the Oracle Client installer without issue. I've also learned a little about getting the Oracle 11g Instant client to work with Toad while I worked through the issue with the installer. I could almost get by completely with just using the Instant Client if I didn't have to use SQL*Loader (sqlldr.exe) and tnsping.exe. Any suggestions for getting these two functions to work with the Instant Client would be appreciated. I tried copying the binaries and the message files into the appropriate instant client directories, but windows kept complaining about missing .dll's when I tried executing the commands.
    If there is no workaround for getting these functions to work with the Instant Client, and I have to do an Oracle Client install, at least now I can. Do you know if I would need to do the full "Administrator" install to get these functions, or can I do just the "Run Time" install to get sqlldr and tnsping?
    Thanks again for your help
