Oracle 8.1.7 + RedHat 7.3 installation success
After several days of work, I succeded in installing Oracle 8i on RedHat 7.3.
1)You can proceed like usual for the account + groups creation.
2)Make the oracle directory.
3)This is what i add in my /home/oracle/.bash_profile
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATH
unset USERNAME
unset LANG
unset LC_CTYPE
unset RC_TYPE
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
source /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh
ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product; export ORACLE_HOME
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/lib; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE
ORACLE_SID=LNX; export ORACLE_SID
ORACLE_TERM=vt100; export ORACLE_TERM
export NLS_LANG=french_france.WE8ISO8859P15
PATH=$PATH:/u01/app/oracle/product/bin; export PATH
4)This is the package you MUST have!! (there are all on CDS - 7.3. On my computer there were already installed except the third)
compat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16
compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
compat-libs-6.2-3
compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
5) You must edit your file /etc/hosts and add the line of your global database name. My SID is LNX so my global database name is LNX.mathias.pc because mathias.pc is my domain. This is my /etc/hosts:
[root@lnx math]# more /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 lnx.mathias.pc lnx localhost.localdomain localhost LNX.mathias.pc
192.168.0.2 LNX.mathias.pc
6) I also download jre_1.1.6-v5-glibc-x86.tar.gz and install it in /usr/local.
7) I runed the installer under oracle. Choosed custon installation and didn't select "oracle intermedia component" because it's buguy.
8)Installation OK
9)Link OK
10)Net-8 assistant (default choice) OK
11)execute patchset in $ORACLE_HOME OK
12)Type "dbassist" under oracle to create your database (choosed default copy from cdrom) OK
END
If you do not proceed like this you'll get error ORA-03113 or ORA-03114 & file control error during the database creation assistant.
Have a nice day
Mathias From France
I figured this out by reading the 6.1 installation guide. However, the NLS_LANG variable is not correct for 8.1.7 as the guide was written for 8.1.5.
Looks like I was missing the ORACLE_TERM, ORA_NLS33 variables.
Hope this helps someone else!

Problem installing Oracle 9.2 on RedHat Linux 7.1 and 9.0
Hi everyone,
As the subject line says, I tried installing Oracle 9.2 on
RedHat Linux 7.1 and 9.0, strictly following instructions
written by Werner Puschitz
(http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.shtml). Both
attempts failed with identical symptoms:
- the installer asks for Disk 2
- after the disk is inserted, it hangs. It turns out that
kernel is writing messages similar to these in
/var/log/messages:
Jun 16 02:45:19 boston kernel: 16:00: rw=0, want=317696, limit=149920
Jun 16 02:45:19 boston kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Unless interrupted, this continues until the /tmp filesystem gets full.
Has anyone experienced this? I haven't been able to find
an explanation so far.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Ljubomir ButurovicProviding a thread-bare configuration of your machine on which you are trying to install Oracle on Linux (and mind you - which kernel/distro, coz that's important) would definitely help you elicit more responses to your messages.

Oracle not available on redhat linux 7.0
Hello frineds ,
I successfully install oracle 9iAPS on RedHat Linux 7.0 , My purpose to run oracle 8.1.7
and it was done successfully , But getting a problem while creating database
1. :- dbassist and copy database from cdrom but at the end approximately 80 % to 82%
it give me error oracle not available or end-of-file on communication channel
2:- SVRMGRL while connection as internal/oracle and tried to create database it give me error like
ORACLE NOT AVAILABLEHi
At windows You must create a service to hadle oracle threads. On linux this is not working in same way, You do not need a "service" to bind thread or process to it.
simple set environment variables
and start sqlpus session with create database command, and so on.
Maybe You should read oracle admin guide for linux. -

Hi Rekha,
The format mask 999G999G999G999G990D0000 is the format mask that I selected from the software itself. I also use this format mask for a single record update. If' s ok, no error, but with tabular form with multiple record update, it shows error .I also changed the decimal point to two digits ,select from software pop-up window (this was tested in the workspace provide by Oracle). It still shows error. Last test I put the space like 1 111,111.00 in a single record update it shows error (but if I put 1 in front of 111,111 without space it's ok-no space before). My point is from user point of view.In the first time user input 100000 the software accept it. Opp! it has to be 1100000. The user comes back after submit and put 1 without comma.It shows error (in tabular form with multiple record update not in single row update). While in the first time the user do not to key any comma at all. This may makes some confuses both the users and the developers which had to check error by adding program to checking some where in Page Processing or Page Rendering.
Thanks

Help! to set up Oracle 9i RAC on Redhat Linux 8.0
hello,
we are setting up Oracle 9i RAC on Redhat Linux 8.0.
The problem we are having is at the point of sharing the raw partition and mounting the raw partition via nfs.
so we have two dell systems called linuxa and linuxb.
the partitions are made on linuxa (/dev/hda6...) and the raw command is used to bind the raw partition to the device (raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/hda6)
now when i run the command to mount
(mount -tnfs linuxa:/dev/raw/raw1 /mnt) i am getting an error
i know this problem isn't directly related with oracle but the whole point in doing this is to install oracle 9i on a shared device between the two system.
i have looked online everywhere for documentation and haven't come up with anything.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
saraI don't know that you can use nfs to share a raw partition. This also defeats the idea of the cluster - If a host dies, the disk storage must still be viewable from the other node.
The raw device must be viewable to both hosts. Oracle controls which host is writing to the disk at any instant.
Use the firewire method or use two scsi cards (terminated, with different scsi id's) to a SHARED scsi disk (unterminated).
This works, I have it running here on 2 PC's with Redhat 7.3. The SCSI disk sits in its own external box between the two PC's. NFS is not used at any stage. -
Oracle 11G database for 64 bit windows installation error

Next screen I chose, Desktop Class, when I click next it dies. It does not show me teh next screen. Oracle firewire modules for Redhat Linux 2.6.9-34.EL
Hi,
I need oracle firewire modules for Redhat Linux 2.6.9-34.EL. Can you please help where can I find firewire modules for this kernel.
Thanks
HaranathAccording to http://www.linux1394.org/download.php you should not need any additional kernel module support. You may need to install the libraw1394 RPM packages, but you can get those from your distribution media or from ULN, if your are subscribed.

Need WP implies that Oracle allow/certify 3rd party MML agent installation on Exadata
Hi,
I need WP that implies Oracle allow/certify 3rd party MML agent installation on Exadata.. I know its allowed but where is the paper mentioning this
BR,
AmmarHi Joe,
I configured a monitoring/dba landscape for two SAP Portals and one SAP BusinessObjects system on a SAP landscape by using DBACOCKPIT, at a customer site. These systems are running on AIX, Windows 2003/2008 servers and attached to the central monitoring system with standalone SAP gateway installations.
One another reason to not use OS based commands or 3rd party tools is security. We are stopping and disabling most of the services on OS where SAP system is running on, because of the security reasons. I faced more security gaps on rsh/ssh and the other tools than standalone SAP Gateway installations. As you can figure out that rsh/ssh is getting more attack than standalone SAP Gateway, because of well known by the IT world.
As a summary of it, this depends to point of view and policy of the IT organization. I applied both ssh and standalone SAP Gateway solutions at my customers, but I choose standalone SAP Gateway installation among of them.
Best regards,
Orkun Gedik
