Oracle 8 and Oracle 9 on linux

Hello,
When I connect to local database on Linux then I see open
tcp ports for 8 database and udp port for 9 database
Is it mean that Oracle don't use unix sockets in local on
Linux and why ?
regards

No.
If I connect with listener, then client connected to port 1521 (client and server are connected in this port) and without listener server listen any port (>30000) - I don't know is it connected

  • Differences between TOAD for Oracle and Oracle SQL Developer?

Does someone know the advantages and disadvantages of using TOAD for Oracle and Oracle SQL Developer?
I work making reports with TOAD, but in a few days I will have to use the SQL Developer (because it´s free) unless I justify the necessity of using TOAD.
Could some that used both compare them?
    Thanks,
    Facundo.

    Hello Facundo,
since we are rolling out new client PCs we switch from Toad to SQL Developer. Therefore I'm doing some training for the "normal" users and our developers.
Most users simply want to have access to the data in tables and views. For those there are 2 main issues:
    - Filters get lost when exiting table while sorting is still applied. Since there is no way to apply filtering before entering the data tab this can become a great performance issue because sorting is applied to many many rows. For views it is sometimes impossible to open the data tab.
    - Exporting date values to Excel needs some know how if you want to sort by this column in Excel, because the date is formatted as "Standard" meaning that the sorting is done as for a text column: 01.01.2009 is less than 02.01.2008. Here you have to use a workaround column with a formula (=1*<datecolumn>)
The greatest Pro is the easy sharing of connections and reports by XML files.
Our developers like the easy debugging in SQL Developer. Though they miss the feature that the source is compiled for debug automatically as in Toad. For this we have distributed a script that compiles any PL/SQL object for debugging.
There are only some Toads installed for DBAs and for users that need access to tables protected by policies that require authentification by OS user since this information is not passed under every circumstance.

  • Differences between Oracle and Oracle Rdb.

My background is mainly VMS, and so I have grown up (since 1984) with DEC Rdb (now Oracle Rdb). I am starting to get into Oracle, and therefore, starting to learn the subtle differences. With this in mind could someone educate me as to the default transaction type when using SQLPLUS (using interactive SQL it's READ WRITE). What is the initialization file called for SQLPLUS, and are there equivalents to the logical names SQLINI, SQL$DATABASE, SQL$EDIT, etc.
If there is someone out there with experience of both, may be you could ease my pain by posting your pearls of wisdom, or tips, here to help me along the way.

OK, I'll try a few, having moved from VAX/Rdb to Oracle 10 years ago.
Oracle's default transaction state is read-write, isolation level READ COMITTED. This means you generally don't need to do a "SET TRANSACTION" at the start of a transaction, and certainly don't need to keep doing commit;set transaction to see the latest values.
In read-write transactions Oracle does not lock rows on read to maintain consistency in the way Rdb used to. Usually people use SELECT ... FOR UPDATE, or update directly (without a separate select) rather than using isolation SERIALIZABLE, which is the equivalent of Rdb's default.
A script login.sql is executed at the start of a SQLPLUS session. On Unix, it looks for this in the current directory, and the home directory.
On UNIX, SQL$DATABASE becomes "export TWO_TASK=dbname"
On Windows, SQL$DATABASE becomes "set LOCAL=dbname"
I strongly recommend Tom Kyte's Expert one-on-one Oracle book to help your transition, and his web site asktom.oracle.com
    Good luck, and welcome.

  • Global transaction problem with JDriver/Oracle and Oracle XA

We are haveing serious problems with Container Managed Transactions on Bea 6.1
and Oracle with EJB having set "Required" for all methods. We have tried in vain
to make it work with JDriver as well as OracleXAClient. Both fail at sometime
during the execution throwing "Not called in cotext of global transaction" (with
JDriver) OR "XAER_PROTO : Routine was invoked in an
inproper context start() failed on resource 'OracleXAPool'" (this one with oracle
    XA).
    1.) Weblogic JDriver-XA:
    DatabaseMetaData metaData = dataSource.getJDBCConnection.getMetaData();
    ResultSet resultSet = metaData.getTables(null, null, tableName.toUpperCase(),
    new String[]{"TABLE"});
This fails immmediately saying that it was not called from global transaction.
Interesting thing is that with OracleXA, it doesnt say this exception at this
    check point.
    2) Oracle XA
Okie, we couldnot read through the CLOB using it so for reading CLOB, we used
direct jdbc connection and then did away with it. Now all next sql queries were
executed against oracle pool using XA data source with OracleXAClient. But at
some point we again ran into the problem "XAER_PROTO : Routine was invoked in
    an
inproper context start() failed on resource 'OracleXAPool'"
    3 Oracle Thin Driver
    everything always works with it.

AFAIR this issue was resoved by moving tx opreations out from non-tx
    methods.

  • Is there any problem for having Oracle and Oracle Express?

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post
is there any problem with having both oracle 10gR2 and oracle express installed on the same machine?
    thanks

There is no theoretical technical problem with multiple Oracle databases on a machine, and I have indeed such an environment on several machines.
Although people have been known to create their own technical problems by not being careful.
You may want to review your knowledge of Oracle architecture, as you MUST have separate ORACLE_HOMEs. The ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID are predefined for XE and it's important to keep things straight.

    Hi,
    Hereby are some answers:
1 : PO is personal version of Oracle RDBMS, and available under
Win95/98/NT. It is the same kernel than a normal Oracle RDBMS
without some advanced feature (object, etc). Lite is another
kernel and originally is a ODBMS (object DBMS). Lite is available
under Win95/98/NT/CE, Epoc32 (coming) and Palm OS (coming). Both
products are actually single user products. There will be a lite
mini-server which will support mutli-user access.
2 - Yes, PO is a full Oracle RDBMS and Lite is a foot-print
database. But both database are mutil-sessions, row-level locking
    etc.
3 - PO supports PL/SQL and Lite support Java Stored procedures.
    Both have database triggers.
4 - For the replication feature, both PO and Lite fully support
basic and advanced replciation. That means: readonly snapshot and
updatable snapshots with subquery and subsettings. They can only
play as snapshot sites. The master site must be Oracle 8 or 8i.
    Hope these can help,

  • Export import - using TOAD FOR ORACLE  and ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS or s

    Hi all,
Could you please kindly help me?
I am using TOAD FOR ORACLE to export a table to flat file A. The tool just supports to distinguish fields by "spaces".
And the web page of ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS to import the data from flat file A to another database. To load data to a table from a text file, the web page bases on "comma" to distinguish fields.
So could you have any suggestion for me? I need to export data via TOAD FOR ORACLE. And then import it to another database by the home page of ORACLE DATABASE 10G EXPRESS or sqlplus.
Thank you so much for your help!

Dont use TOAD for exporting your data. Use PL/SQL. Below is the code given in Asktom.com that does what you want.

  • Sql server - to oracle - and oracle - to sql server

    hi
is there any good tool for Migration from sql server 2008 to oracle 11g - and from oracle 11g to sql server 2008 ?
    thank's in advance

    Hello,
the SQL Developer Migration Workbench does not yet include online migrations of SQL Server 2008 (maximum version is 2005) to Oracle 11g. But an offline migration should work. Please refer to:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html

For the other direction from Oracle to SQL Server you should check Microsoft sites, e.g. start here:

  • Directory Setup for RAC and Oracle Restart

I have three database installations that I'd like some insight on the initial directory structure and permissions. The three installations are:
    1) Prod RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    2) Test RAC - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure, 11.2.0.2 DB EE with RAC option
    3) Single Instance - OEL 5U2, 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Standalone (Oracle Restart), 11.2.0.2 DB EE
The they all have two users GRID (for Grid Infrastructure Software Owner) and ORACLE (for Oracle Database Software Owner).
We had a consultant install the databases. It's very weird since we have an inconsistency in directories and permission. I want to understand the inconsistency between RAC installations as well as Oracle Restart Install.
SEE BELOW: The two RAC servers have different owners for /u01/app/11.2.0.2 directory. The Oracle Restart Installation - Single Instance has the same owner as Prod RAC but different than Test RAC. What the consultant said was that ORACLE_BASE would be /u01/app/oracle for both Grid Infrastructure and Database installations. This was to apply to TEST/PROD RAC (3 node, 3 instances, 1 instance/node) and Oracle Restart installation. The GRID_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/grid and ORACLE_HOME would be /u01/app/11.2.0.2/db_1. It seems like the owners aren't setup correctly. Why? I don't want problems with patching or upgrading. If this setup is technically incorrect what is the best way to setup so there's no owner/permission issues. Is it necessary to have two separate ORACLE_BASE's like /u01/app/grid?

    Hello
I did only check prod, as that is the important one.
i am afraid that setup is not clean. I won't use the work is wrong, but need to be normalized.
grid oracle base need to be separate from oracle oracle base, and the grid oracle home, MUST be outside of oracle base/oracle home of the oracle user.
In a multi user setup, the structure should be as follow.
grid user, group oinstall, asm* groups
oracle user, group oinstall, dba and db* groups
The GRID install, have, grid home and oracle base
the oracle base for grid should be, /u01/app/grid
the grid home should be, /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
the Oracle user have several homes, and oracle base
the oracle base for oracle should be, /u01/oracle
so, for permissions, when I create this, i do as root
    mkdir -p /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/grid
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oraInventory
    chown -R grid:oinstall /u01
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01/app/oracle
then, you install grid .. you have so say oracle home is /u01/app/grid and oracle home is /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
at the end, the root.sh as part of the install will take care of the permissions for oraInventory, and the rest for grid.
when grid is installed, you can move to the oracle db install you use oracle base as /u01/app/oracle and oracle home as /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/dbhome_1
    that will give you
    2 4 drwxr-xr-x 6 root oinstall 4096 Sep 21 03:20 /u01

Each user have to use his own oracle_base, as each oracle_base will store files and folders created for logs, admin, diagnostic with different permissions and different usages, for a reason you have role separation.

  • Replication between Oracle and SQL Server

Does anyone have any experience with replicating data between SQL Server and Oracle database system? If so, I am experiencing time out errors when replicating data. I replicating from SQL Server 2k to Oracle and it time out on the Oracle side.

how to configure my apply process to work with sql server by getway , I want to make replication
    note :
I make dblink between oracle and sql and make insert from oracle to sql
is it sufficient to make replication by OEM between oracle and oracle and then add new apply process to work with gateway for sql server and how ?

  • Using Notes and Oracle Client in the same application on Linux crashes

This thread is copied from a thread of the same name under Database - General, since I cannot get any replies there.
Could someone from Oracle PLEASE comment on this.
Our application on Linux loads the Notes client libraries and then the Oracle client libraries. The application will crashes when connectimg to an Oracle server. This is because the T_* symbols in libnnz11.so get fixed up into libnotes.so rather than locally into libnnz11.so where the functions are defined.

We have circumvented the problem for the time being by making sure that we load the Oracle libraries before Notes, but we cannot go with that as a long term solution.
In my opinion the Oracle library is wrongly linked since all the T_* functions are defined in libnnz11.so. When we load Oracle first, the loader debug trace shows the correct fixups. When we load Notes first, the loader trace shows the incorrect fixups. We are using dlopen(libor9i.so, RTLD_LOCAL) for Oracle and dlopen(libnotes.so, RTLD_LOCAL) for Notes. libor9i.so has a dependency on libclntsh.so.10.1.
An opinion would really be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John Unsworth

    Thanks again.
We don't have an Oracle support contract because we do not use Oracle ourselves. We supply an application that synchronises data between multiple data servers and server types, of which Oracle is one and Notes is another, as well as LDAP servers and many other types.
Producing a full resolved binary is therefore not an option since the types of data server are configured when the apploication is installed, and then the client software for each server is loaded as required.
The end user of the application supplies the client libraries and has a support contract for the servers, in particular Oracle and Notes in this case. So the other option is for the end user to raise a ticket using his support contract, but he is reluctant to do that since he considers that this is our problem as we supply the application that is having the problem. So we are in a dead water area. We do not want to take out a support contract just to get what is an Oracle product problem resolved. I imagine that this problem is something that has not been encountered before, because our use of the client library in conjunction with other client libraries is probably unusual.
So that is why I am hoping, without any success so far, that someone from Oracle will pick this up.

  • Question regarding Oracle and Linux on VMware

    Hello,
I carefuly read the paper on Oracle and Linux on Your Own VMware and I'm missing a point.
The paper explains how to start a cluster on a single host in a single Linux VM on VMware.
So, there are 2 instances of Oracle 10g DB on the same Linux VM inside VMware. What does allow that?
Is it possible to run 2 instances on any (single) Linux box, or is VMware required? If VMware is not required, why this complication in that paper? If VMware is required, what does it bring that make running 2 cluster instances on the same host possible?
    Many thanks for your help.

I have an oracle database (10.2) and I have a query that needs to compare data on the Oracle database to data on a MS SQL server DB. I'm using a DB Link between the two databases.
How would I compare the date fields?
I have a table that has a date as one of the fields and I need to restrict the records where the date is equal to the date on SQL, however the formats are different:
    My query is as follows:
    SELECT mkt_css_name,
    pmv_rqst_corp_id,
    pmv_rqst_source,
    'G',
    pmv_css_acct_no,
    eq.start_date
    FROM power_move@cmdt,
    enroll_que@tcis eq,
    marketer@cmdt
    WHERE eq.css_account_number = pmv_css_acct_no
    AND eq.requestor_type = 'P'
    AND eq.status IN ('A','P','G','S')
    AND eq.marketer_id = mkt_seq_no
    AND pmv_service_type IN ('G','D')
    And Pmv_Gas_Mktr_No = Eq.Marketer_Id
    AND pmv_received_timestamp= eq.enroll_date ;
The problem is that the date is stored in Oracle in the following format: DD-MON-YYYY and in SQL as 'YYYY-DD-MM HH:MI:SSSSSS'
for example: Data in Oracle would be 27-JAN-2012 and in SQL as 2012-01-27 00:00:00.000
I get an error when I compile.
How do you reconcile the formats when the syntax is different between databases?
Thanks, SeanDATE datatypes do NOT have any "format"
DATE datatype is stored in internal binary notation.
use TO_CHAR to display, present & compare the DATE datatypes

    Hello Serge,
You need to check your tnsnames.ora file. You need to very that the service name you are using on the NT client is really connecting you to the linux server.
The Oracle docs cover how to set it up.
    it goes something like this
Also do a search for Jesus M. Salvo's how to on setting it all up. He is on the OTN check back about 2 months or so.
I would send you a copy of my tnsnames.ora file, but I cannot get it (not on server now)
