Oracle DB Can't Survive ZFS SA Controller Failover
We are running two new Sparc T4-1 servers against a ZFS SA with two heads and a single DE2-24P disk shelf. It is configured with a single pool for all the storage. Our servers are clustered with VCS as an active/passive pair, so only one server accesses storage at a time. The active server runs the Oracle Enterprise DB version 12c, using dNFS to connect to the shares. Before deployment, we are testing out various failure scenarios, and I was disheartened to see that the Oracle DB doesn't handle a controller failover very well. Here's how I tested:
My DBA kicked off a large DB import job to provide some load.
I logged in to the secondary head, and issued "takeover" on the "cluster" page.
My DBA monitored the DB alert log, and reported everything looking fine.
When the primary head was back online, I logged in to it, and issued "takeover" on the "cluster" page.
This time things didn't go so well. We logged the following:

your FRA filed up.
you are getting ORA-16038: log 15 sequence# 339 cannot be archived
This means that there is no more space on FRA.
You need to clean up the FRA. Here are some steps:

How can I boot my PXI controller into real-time without a floppy disk?
My PXI controller is in a lab which has intense magnetic fields that could corrupt the floppy disk used to boot the PXI controller into the LabVIEW Real-Time (RT) Operating System. How can I boot the PXI controller into real-time directly from the hard drive?
If you are using LabVIEW 5.1.2 Real-Time (RT), launch Remote System Explorer and select Disks >> Create Format Hard Drive Disk. If you have LabVIEW 6 RT, launch the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and select Tools >> RT PXI Disk Utilities >> Create Format Hard Drive Disk (LabVIEW RT 6 has not be released yet). Once you have created the disk, boot the PXI controller with the Format Hard Drive Disk, and this will format the PXI's hard drive and install the real-time OS boot loader. Now you can reboot the PXI without a floppy disk and configure the PXI using Remote System Explorer or MAX. Be aware that this will remove all information from the hard drive, including other operating systems.

Every few days we see two dialogs with the following messages:
Dialog 1, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller.
Dialog 2, title: Check for Licensing Compliance is Incomplete
The server did not finish checking the license compliance. If the server is joined to a domain, make sure that the server can connect to a domain controller. If the license compliance check cannot be completed, the server will automatically shut
down in 8 day(s) 23 hour(s) 0 minute(s).
The server is not (and never has been) joined to a domain or had any DC roles installed. In fact its still connected to the default Workgroup.
The server was configured in our office and never showed this message until it was installed on site. The main difference from what I can see is that when installed on site it was given a static IP address and does not have any DNS settings in the network
adapter properties.
I have scoured a number of forums on this error but in almost every other instance of this error message the servers are connected to a Domain Controller and the solutions generally are linked to dis-joining and rejoining the domain. Unfortunately this is
not an option for this scenario.
I initially thought that adding some relevant DNS server IP address may resolve the issue, however, we have the exact same model server configured exactly the same running at a different site that does not experience this problem. This server also has no
DNS server configured.
I have seen a post that suggests turning off the servers "Foundation Checking", but I'm unsure how to do this. Thanks for your response Vivian.
I can confirm that this server is not (and never has been) a member of any active directory, it is configured as a Workgroup server. It was initially configured on a network that does have an active directory, but was never joined to it. During that time it
never displayed these messages.
The server was moved into production on a different site and network and setup with a static IP address. The site network does have its own active directory but the server was not joined to it. It is whilst on this new network that these messages began.
Since my original post DNS servers have been added and the Microsoft activation has been verified, however, the messages are still appearing.
There are only 2 user accounts configured on this server. The local admin account and another local admin user.
The remote desktop services roles have been installed but not yet configured. I don't think that has any bearing on this scenario though.
The description of this error in the above "Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Foundation" link states:
This error occurs when the server cannot finish checking the requirements for the root domain, forest trust configuration, or both. It usually happens when the server cannot connect to a domain controller. If the situation persists, the server will
shut down 10 days after the first time the compliance check failed. Each time this error message occurs, it will state the actual time remaining before the server will shut down. If you restart the server after it has shut down because of non-compliance, the
server will shut itself down again in 3 days.
The above description leads me to the following question - In a Workgroup environment, does the server still try to contact a domain controller to establish a level of trust? If this is the case could it be that the server can no longer see the initial DC
on its new network and this is what is triggering the messages?
Am I clutching at straws here? -

Is Oracle Form can read bar code scanner ?
Hi everybody,
I would like to develop an application for a video club with oracle form. Can anyone tell me how can do or just say if it is possible or not
Thanks a lot.
Shafique MahmoodI would like to develop an application with
Oracle form can any one can just tell me
is it possible or not? Depending what bar code scanner you use. If it has a Java
interface, you can develop a PJC (Pluggable Java Component) for
Forms, or even a Java Bean and use a JavaBean area item.
If it has a COM interface, you can use the JavaBean/COM bridges
probably get the same result.
For PJC and JavaBeans, have a look in the Forms 6i/9i docs for
more info.
Hope that helps -
What is maximum amount of memory that oracle db can utilize ?
Hi
Thank you for reading my post
What is maximum number of memory that oracle database can utilize for each of its memory structure like sga, caches....
Thanksps, the following may help too
VLM) Configurations
Oracle Database for Windows supports Very Large Memory (VLM) configurations in Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP, which allows Oracle Database to access more than the 4 gigabyte (GB) of RAM traditionally available to Windows applications.
Note:
This feature is available on Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP only with Intel Pentium II and above processors.
Specifically, Oracle Database uses Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) built into Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP to access more than 4 GB of RAM.
The requirements for taking advantage of this support are:
1. The computer on which Oracle Database is installed must have more than 4 GB of memory.
2. The operating system must be configured to take advantage of Physical Address Extensions (PAE) by adding the /PAE switch in boot.ini. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q268363 for instructions on modifying boot.ini to enable PAE.
3. It is advisable (though not necessary) to enable 4GT support by adding the /3GB parameter in boot.ini. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q171793 for additional requirements and instructions on modifying boot.ini to enable 4GT.
4. The user account under which Oracle Database runs (typically the LocalSystem account), must have the "Lock memory pages" Windows 2000 and Windows XP privilege.
5. USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS=TRUE must be present in the initialization parameter file for the database instance that will use VLM support. If this parameter is not set, then Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) or later behaves in exactly the same way as previous releases.
6. Initialization parameters DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS and DB_BLOCK_SIZE must be set to values you have chosen for Oracle Database.
Note:
The total number of bytes of database buffers (that is, DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS multiplied by DB_BLOCK_SIZE) is no longer limited to 3 GB.
Dynamic SGA and multiple block size are not supported with VLM. When VLM is enabled, the following new buffer cache parameters are not supported:
o DB_CACHE_SIZE
o DB_2K_CACHE_SIZE
o DB_4K_CACHE_SIZE
o DB_8K_CACHE_SIZE
o DB_16K_CACHE_SIZE
o DB_32K_CACHE_SIZE
To select the block size for the instance, use the initialization parameter DB_BLOCK_SIZE. The buffer cache size is set by the initialization parameter DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS.
7. Registry parameter AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY must be created and set in the appropriate key for your Oracle home. This parameter is specified in bytes and has a default value of 1 GB. AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY tells Oracle Database how much of its 3 GB address space to reserve for mapping in database buffers.
This memory comes from the 3 GB virtual address space in Oracle Database, so its value must be less than 3 GB. Setting this parameter to a large value has the effect of using more of the address space for buffers and using less AWE memory for buffers. However, since accessing AWE buffers is somewhat slower than accessing virtual address space buffers, Oracle recommends that you tune these parameters to be as large as possible without adversely limiting database operations.
In general, the higher AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set, the fewer connections and memory allocations will be possible for Oracle Database. The lower AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set, the lower the performance.
8. Once this parameter is set, Oracle Database can be started and will function exactly the same as before except that more database buffers are available to the instance. In addition, disk I/O may be reduced because more Oracle Database data blocks can be cached in the System Global Area (SGA).
Note:
Registry parameter VLM_BUFFER_MEMORY, which enabled VLM configurations in earlier releases, is not supported in Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) or later.
VLM Instance Tuning
VLM configurations improve database performance by caching more database buffers in memory. This reduces disk I/O compared to configurations without VLM. VLM support in Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) or later has been re-written to integrate very closely with Windows. Compared to Oracle8i release 2 (8.1.6), VLM users should see better performance with the newer implementation.
Tuning for VLM is no different than tuning for configurations without VLM. It is an iterative task that begins by selecting appropriate DB_BLOCK_SIZE and DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS initialization parameters for the application being supported.
Note:
Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) or later VLM configurations do not support multiple database block sizes.
AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY, a new registry parameter specific to VLM, tells Oracle Database how much of its address space to reserve for mapping in database buffers. It defaults to a value of 1 GB, which should be suitable for most installations. If DB_BLOCK_SIZE is large, however, the default AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY value of 1 GB may not be sufficient to start the database.
Increasing the value of AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY will improve performance, but it will also limit the amount of memory available for other Oracle Database threads (like foreground threads). Clients may see "out of memory" errors if this value is set too large. As a general guideline, increase the AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY registry value by 20 percent.
For example, if DB_BLOCK_SIZE is set to 8 KB, AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set to 1 GB, and the number of LRU latches is set to 32 (16 processor computer), then database startup fails with out of memory errors 27102 and 34. Increasing the value of AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY to 1.2 GB fixes the problem.
Having a large cache in a VLM configuration may also slow down database writer (DBWR) threads. Having more DBWR threads will distribute work required to identify and write buffers to disk and will distribute I/O loads among threads. Initialization parameter DB_WRITER_PROCESSES enables you to configure multiple database writer threads.
A large cache can also introduce contention on the LRU (least recently used) latch. On symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems, Oracle Database sets the number of LRU latches to a value equal to one half the number of processors on the system. You can reduce contention on such configurations by increasing the number of LRU latches to twice (or four times) the number of processors on the system.

Windows 4 GB RAM Tuning (4GT)
The following Windows operating systems include a feature called 4 GB RAM Tuning (4GT):
· Windows Server 2003
· Windows 2000 Advanced Server
· Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
This feature allows memory-intensive applications running on Oracle Database Enterprise Edition to access up to 3 GB of memory, as opposed to the standard 2 GB in previous operating system versions. 4GT provides a tremendous benefit: 50 percent more memory is available for database use, increasing SGA sizes or connection counts.
Large User Populations
Several features allow Oracle Database to support an increasingly large number of database connections on Windows:
· Oracle Database Shared Server Process, which limits the number of threads needed in the Oracle Database process, supports over 10,000 simultaneous connections to a single database instance.
· Oracle Net multiplexing and connection pooling features allow a large configuration to connect more users to a single database instance.
· Oracle Real Application Clusters raises connection counts dramatically by allowing multiple server computers to access the same database files, increasing the number of user connections by tens of thousands, as well as increasing throughput.

Only 'oracle' account can connect via sqlplus
Currently, only the linux oracle account can connect to the
server via sqlplus. A have put an exact copy of oracle's
.profile script into other accounts home directories, and those
accounts belong to the linux dba group. When another account
starts sqlplus, they are prompted with login and password, and
the the following error occurs:
ORA-01034 ORACLE NOT AVAILABLE
But if I login as 'oracle', i can connect no problem. I always
start the server under the oracle account with the dbstart
script.
I am probably overlooking something stupid, any ideas?
Please email me directly in addition to the post.

nullThere is nothing to do with your .profile, default password, etc.
After Oracle installation via the installer (orainst), have you
run root.sh? Root.sh will set the setuid/setgid bit on for the
file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle. If it is not set, only the owner
(i.e. oracle/dba) can connect.
Fix the problem by rerun root.sh. If it doesn't help, simply run
the commands:
$ chown oracle:dba $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
$ chmod ug+s $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle

Is there any mechanism where Oracle ESB can store messages
Hello All,
Is there any mechanism where Oracle ESB can store messages? like MQ does , Due to any reason if any compoenet goes down or Database goes down messages should not lost.
But not sure if Oracle ESB in Oracle SOA Suite 10g has feature to persist the messages ?
Waiting for reply.
Thanks & Regards
KumarIn 10g, ESB doesnot come with this builtin, you can use AQ/JMS to store the messages.

Oracle Forms can read the DBF files ?
hi,
i have 2 PC : the first with sco-unix and a database d-base with files .DBF
and the second PC with windows xp pro and data base oracle
i want to know if Oracle Forms can read the DBF files from the first PC and load the data to oracle data base.
thank'sLido,
If you can create an ODBC connector for your d-Base files you should be able to use ODBC to read the data from these files. The alternative would be to use TEXT_IO (Forms 6i/Client Server) or CLIENT_TEXT_IO (WebUtils) to read the .DBF files (as I recall, d-Base simply wrote a comma delimited data file). Using this method will require you to understand the layout of the .dbf file so you know which data element is which.
Which method you use depends on which version of Oracle Forms you are using and if your application is web deployed or Client/Server.

Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes
What kind of overhead is involved if we configure Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes? Has anyone performed benchmarks using this scheme?
I've not done it personally with DNFS but I have created a multitude of clusters with NetApp on their NFS file system without ever having an issue other than saving a lot of money.

What time Oracle Spatial Can support text object
Hi:
I want know what time oracle spatial can support text object. it is very useful for
GIS and LBS customer.
nullHi,
I think it is an interesting idea, but there are difficulties when implementing such objects in the database level. For one thing, the placement, orientation of text for a point geometry is often dependent on point geometries stored in other rows in order to acheive an optimal and non-overlapping placement. It also depends on the font and size of the text, as well as the scale and level of detail when visualizing the spatial data. Such contextual information is only available to an application. I hope I understood you correctly and if you have further comments I would like to hear them too. -
Could you please tell me, which oracle commands can get below result?

Controller Failover Scenarios - 5508
I am putting a design together for a resilient wireless network.
I have 2 main data center sites
Site 1 I will have either:
1 x 5508
1 x 5508 + HA
2 x 5508 in N+1 failover
Site 2 will have just one 5508 controller.
What failover models are available to me?
Can I have an option of N+1 with also a failover to Site 2 if Site 1 is down
From my initial research I think I can can only configure AP's to have a primary and secondary controller configured.
So think the best model is an HA pair in Site 1 and the 5508 in Site 2
What I don't understand yet is the controller to controller failover?
I will be running a guest network out of Site 1 and require the controllers there to be the anchor
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
RogerYou can have various designs:
Option 1:
You can have AP's on both WLC's to off load traffic
Site 1:
5508 with license
Site 2:
5508 with license
Option 2:
You have AP's on one WLC and the other is backup
Site 1:
5508 with license
Site 2:
5508 HA sku
Option 3:
You run N+1
Site 1:
5508 with license
5508 HA sku N+1 (Secondary)
Site 2:
5508 HA sku N+1 (Tertiary)
Option 4:
You run AP and Client SSO
Site 1:
5508 license
5508 HA sku AP SSO
Site 2:
5508 HA sku N+1
Option 5:
Run both sites with AP SSO
Site 1:
5508 license (Primary)
5508 HA sku AP SSO
Site 2:
5508 license (Secondary)
5508 HA sku AP SSO
