Oracle on Linux (getting started)
Hello, i've just installed Oracle EX on linux (Fedora Core 5) and I did some initial configurations:
http port: 8080
listener port: 1521
and password for database accounts.
I had my system rebooted and now i can't connect to http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex.
This is my first posting and I'm a very beginner at this (never used a DBMS).
I appreciate anyone's help!
hey guys,
my oracle_env. sh didn't run in the first place, but i've already fixed that.
Now my lsnrctl status is this:

But all vain... Its working off the VPN but not on.

For the time being work is being done. but i'd love to know the reason n case with 11g.

Getting started with java is dead link
otn home page > click 'Java' under 'Technologies' in left frame. > click 'Java' in the 'getting started box'. That link is broken.
Fixed; the correct URL is:

MuralyHi,
you start all your oracle services except "OracleOraHome81ManagementServer". Specially try to start "OracleOraHome81DataGatherer", "OracleOraHome81TNSListener" and service you have created for your database.

Hi Guys!
Thanks for your advises. I still working toward a resolution.
But I encountered another issue from Enterp Manager :

My connection has this format:

bfc6d000-bfc6e000 rw-p bfffe000 00:00 0Hi,
Please check Oracle support id : Troubleshooting ORA-3135 Connection Lost Contact (Doc ID 787354.1) -
How to Install emacs, openssh and start oracle database and get a connect?
As suggested by another poster, I installed the prebuilt appliance at [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html] and [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html] with the intent of running oracle database in a linux vm as a guest on windows 7 and connecting to it using JDBC from the windows host.
This is running but I don't know how to install other stuff. I tried "sudo yum install openssh" and "sudo yum install emacs" and "sudo service sshd status" and none of these worked (it could not find these packages). I could not get apt-get or app-get or aptget to work either. I was hoping that "uname -a" would tell me if this was fedora or debian or something else but no luck. What command do I use to learn the distro name?
How do I make ifconfig tell me what the ip address so I can use "scp" and "ssh" to get into the box? Ok, /sbin/ifconfig works and I see there is only a loopback address. Ack! How do I create a socket so I can ssh into this little beastie?
How do I disable the firewall or (better yet) punch holes in it so I get use JDBC and ssh, scp and samba from windows 7?
I tried firing up the SQL Developer 3.1 and getting a test connection with username and password of "oracle" with no luck. How do I get a test connection to work?
How do I determine if the database is running? If not, how do I start it and stop it and restart it?
Thanks
Siegfried

Edited by: user8816970 on Sep 15, 2012 6:33 PMThere is no "oracle" account native to the database itself. This is just the default account that owns the application. Log on as oracle/oracle to the OS. (OEL) You can change the passwords of the sys and system account by setting your $ORACLE_HOME and $ORACLE_SID. Default SID is orcl on a database install. Also set a path to the oracle binaries in the form of $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
Then sqlplus / as sysdba
Change passwords of sys and system using the following example.
ALTER USER SYS IDENTIFIED BY [password];
ALTER USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY [password];
The supplied appliance runs oracle enterpirse linux. Not debain or fedora.
Why do you need "emacs"?
I haven't personally load this appliance with Virtual Box but there has to be a readme file somewhere that details all the passwords and etc. -

Getting started porting Linux driver
Hello,
If this question has been posted somewhere else please point me in the right direction.
I'm new to solaris and my goal is to port a Linux driver (vmebus pci device on Redhat) to Solaris (X86 v5.11). The Linux driver is all written in straight C. I've installed Solaris Express Dev Edition 2/07. I see that gcc is there (under /usr/sfw/bin) but it seems like a bare-bones development environment (no enviroment variables set up , etc).
My question is is this the right set of development tools to proceed forward with or should I be downloading something else ? Is there some easier to use graphical 'IDE like' set of tools that is more appropriate for a Solaris newbie like me ? I know Forte is a commercial product, what is the best freeware for graphical C development ?
Regards,
Brent

bbartsonHere's what I would do... go to this website and download an ISO of a live CD. You can burn it, stick it in your CD drive, and start your PC. It will boot to Linux without ever having to format anything, that way you can tinker around with how it feels. After you are happy with that, you can download and install a distro...
http://www.kubuntu.org/special-cds.php
As far as disrtos go, I would choose one of the following for a first time user:
Kubuntu (because it's easy to get started) http://www.kubuntu.org/ or
Fedora Core 5 (because it's easy to download and add packages -- most in the Add/Remove Programs app) http://fedora.redhat.com/
Both of these distributions have a lot of help and howtos when it comes to Oracle as well. If you don't like KDE (I do but that's personal preference) then FC5 gives you the option of Gnome or KDE and Ubuntu is the non-KDE version of Kubuntu.

Unable to auto start database/listener/EM on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5
All Experts
I have install oracle 11g on Oracle Enterprize Linux 5 successfully.
done all post installating steps, but when i restart server oracle listener/database/EM not automatically start.
Please guide what is wron (server dbora error: /bin/sh: :No such file or directory).
1. Log in as the root user
2. Edit the oratab file (SID=Y)
3. Create a file called dbora
4.Run chmod and chgrp on the dbor file
# chgrp dba dbora
# chmod 750 dbora
6.Creat symbolic links to the dbora script
# ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K01dbora
# ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S99dbora
# ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99dbora
7. add service
# chkconfig --add dbora
# chkconfig –list dbora

# ls -l /etc/rc*.d/*dbora

echo "usage: $0 {start|stop}"
exit
esac
exitdoes the script work when you log on to your freshly started system, logon as root and execute /etc/init.d/dbora start?
the script does not have to have group membership of the dba group.
also, do not create symlinks yourself.
by adding the service using chkconfig the script is started and stopped as indicated by chkconfig --list, no need to do additional steps like creating symlinks. -

Getting started with Oracle 11g express edition
I am currently in a college class doin SQL. I have downloaded oracle 11g express edition. I'm trying to get started and when I try to create a new connection it takes me to a screen where I have to sign in. When I use my oracle sign in and pass word it tells me it doesn't recognize it. No I know it works because I can sign in on the web site. But it won't connect me or allow me to make a new connection. I really don't understand what is going on. I can seriously use some help. Something that will take me step by step on what I need to do. I have to create a data base and I'm not sure how to do it.
Thank You
Carl GavinHello Carl,
Something that will take me step by step on what I need to do.Sounds like what you are searching for is the [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/admin.112/e18585/toc.htm]Getting Started Guide.
If you need some advanced knowlege, there would be the "2 Day DBA Guide", which, among other topics, contains a section on [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/server.112/e18804/connecting.htm#CEGIFAHF]Connecting to the Database. I think you'll find all necessary information (background and step by step description) you need.

T420s Linux (Fedora) Video -- Getting Started
I installed Fedora 15 on my new T420s and it works fine so far except that I can only get a resolution of 1024x768 on the built-in LCD, instead of the 1600x900 which the screen supports. It works fine in Windows 7 at 1600x900. I have not tried an external monitor.
I have been trying various things (Nvidia drivers, bumblebee, different BIOS settings) but so far they either did not work or had the same resolution limitation. Before I go into great detail, I thought I should check if anyone has Linux running at all on a T420s at 1600x900. If so, can you post your xorg.conf file and BIOS settings? That way I would have a working base configuration to work from. At this point I don't care if it uses the Intel or Nvidia graphics -- I just want the higher resolution to get started.
BTW, when Fedora installed, it set up xorg.conf to use the vesa driver. The resolution applet lists choices of 1024x768, 960x600, and 800x600. I tried adding modes in xorg.conf, but that had no effect.
Thanks in advance.Well, I already have the system installed, so I would like to just change the settings.
I checked, and the Intel drivers are already installed. So I changed the BIOS to Integrated Graphics and changed my xorg.conf to say 'Driver "intel" ' instead of ' Driver "vesa" '. When I try to start X I get these messages:
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
I also tried removing my xorg.conf and running "Xorg -configure". That tried to load all the drivers (mach64, vesa, etc.), then aborted when it loaded the nvidia driver and there was no nvidia hardware. So I deleted the nvidia driver files and now it complains that it cannot find the nvidia driver. I have not been able to figure out how Xorg knows what drivers (kernel modules) to load when I ask for -configure so I can tell it not to load the nvidia driver.
You know, I have been using Linux since version 0.9 around 1990 and Unix since Seventh Edition() and I still cannot keep track of how the different configuration files keep changing.
Thanks in advance for any insights or suggestions. -
