Getting started porting Linux driver

Hello,
If this question has been posted somewhere else please point me in the right direction.
I'm new to solaris and my goal is to port a Linux driver (vmebus pci device on Redhat) to Solaris (X86 v5.11). The Linux driver is all written in straight C. I've installed Solaris Express Dev Edition 2/07. I see that gcc is there (under /usr/sfw/bin) but it seems like a bare-bones development environment (no enviroment variables set up , etc).
My question is is this the right set of development tools to proceed forward with or should I be downloading something else ? Is there some easier to use graphical 'IDE like' set of tools that is more appropriate for a Solaris newbie like me ? I know Forte is a commercial product, what is the best freeware for graphical C development ?
Regards,
Brent

Here's what I would do... go to this website and download an ISO of a live CD. You can burn it, stick it in your CD drive, and start your PC. It will boot to Linux without ever having to format anything, that way you can tinker around with how it feels. After you are happy with that, you can download and install a distro...
http://www.kubuntu.org/special-cds.php
As far as disrtos go, I would choose one of the following for a first time user:
Kubuntu (because it's easy to get started) http://www.kubuntu.org/ or
Fedora Core 5 (because it's easy to download and add packages -- most in the Add/Remove Programs app) http://fedora.redhat.com/
Both of these distributions have a lot of help and howtos when it comes to Oracle as well. If you don't like KDE (I do but that's personal preference) then FC5 gives you the option of Gnome or KDE and Ubuntu is the non-KDE version of Kubuntu.

  • T420s Linux (Fedora) Video -- Getting Started

I installed Fedora 15 on my new T420s and it works fine so far except that I can only get a resolution of 1024x768 on the built-in LCD, instead of the 1600x900 which the screen supports. It works fine in Windows 7 at 1600x900. I have not tried an external monitor.
I have been trying various things (Nvidia drivers, bumblebee, different BIOS settings) but so far they either did not work or had the same resolution limitation. Before I go into great detail, I thought I should check if anyone has Linux running at all on a T420s at 1600x900. If so, can you post your xorg.conf file and BIOS settings? That way I would have a working base configuration to work from. At this point I don't care if it uses the Intel or Nvidia graphics -- I just want the higher resolution to get started.
BTW, when Fedora installed, it set up xorg.conf to use the vesa driver. The resolution applet lists choices of 1024x768, 960x600, and 800x600. I tried adding modes in xorg.conf, but that had no effect.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I already have the system installed, so I would like to just change the settings.
I checked, and the Intel drivers are already installed. So I changed the BIOS to Integrated Graphics and changed my xorg.conf to say 'Driver "intel" ' instead of ' Driver "vesa" '. When I try to start X I get these messages:
    (EE) No devices detected.
    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
I also tried  removing my xorg.conf and running "Xorg -configure". That tried to load all the drivers (mach64, vesa, etc.), then aborted when it loaded the nvidia driver and there was no nvidia hardware. So I deleted the nvidia driver files and now it complains that it cannot find the nvidia driver. I have not been able to figure out how Xorg knows what drivers (kernel modules) to load when I ask for -configure so I can tell it not to load the nvidia driver.
You know, I have been using Linux since version 0.9 around 1990 and Unix since Seventh Edition() and I still cannot keep track of how the different configuration files keep changing.
Thanks in advance for any insights or suggestions.

    Problem persists with same errors!
Any other soultion? We are thinking to recreate RCU, re install SOA and recreate domain.
But that also we have done several times but in vain.

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then repair the backup/TM drive.

    Any help is much appreciated!

Not sure I understand what you're trying to do/install and why based on your post. But since it sounds like you're trying to jump right into the middle of it and I "got started using c++ and opengl" without having any clue of anything a week or so ago, here's some random stuff that would have saved me a lot of time:
    - I don't think nouveau is so great for opengl - you're probably better of using the proprietary nvidia driver (which isn't great for development, but still, better / necessary). You seem to be on a laptop? Then you might need one of those bumblebee / optimus things which makes the situation a lot worse. I never had to use those things, but based on various random posts I came across while I was breaking & fixing my own opengl stuff, everything seems to be even more confusing & glitchy/breaky for the people who have to use it on TOP of the whole rest. You might waste a lot of time looking for errors in your code when there are none and it's really just that optimus/bumblebee thing messing stuff up. Which is TERRIBLE if you're just getting started, so you probably should think about using a different machine with a "real / normal" graphics card for this until you have seen "how opengl is supposed to behave" without this additional source of messy breakage.
    - New to c++ and confused with including / linking etc? If so: Try cmake (google "findpackage.cmake" for whatever you need, look at some cmakelist.txt's for programs similar to what you want to write) - that might get you started a lot faster while you're still not sure what you need/want and enables you to learn the boring stuff piece by piece when you really need it (as opposed to all in one giant boring heap before you can even try anything fun).
    - Kdevelop (or any IDE that has some support for cmake + GOOD syntax completion) also helps a LOT in the beginning.
    - For a start, you just need a modern opengl context. The rest  (glew, glut, opengl, etc) will probably somehow fall into place once you made your choice there and just start with that. SFML is probably the most comfortable to offer an opengl context for a beginner (SDL can be a bit stubborn if you're as clueless as I was. I also tried several others and they all seemed rather "brittle", leading to confusing results if you try to use them while not having much of a clue yet).
    - If you already know some C++/opengl, "those pesky :: 's" don't confuse you as much as they did me when I took a first look, and you don't necessarily want to try doing everything very lowlvl (write your own shader class etc) at first until you understand stuff, you can also try to use qt5's opengl context from the start (I'm switching to it now that I need a GUI in addition to raw opengl).
    - After you manage to draw some obsolete opengl stuff (glbegin() tutorials are everywhere) to confirm that you managed to create your gl context, it probably makes sense to forget about "glbegin" again right away and focus on ShaderProgram/VAO/VBO. It might make sense to to create + render a VAO manually first to get a better understanding of what they are/do... but on the other hand, you can also safe a lot of time if you use premade ShaderProgram/VAO/VBO classes (I think qt5 has all of those) instead right away.
    - At the point you manage to get a VAO rendered in your context, you probably won't rely on finding information specific to your framework (p.E.: linux/qt/nvidia stuff/sfml) so heavily any more and can look for general opengl / VAO / VBO / Open Shader Language stuff - which is all over the place and easy to find.
    - Limiting your googling to THE LAST YEAR when you look for opengl/c++ stuff might get you a lot less confusing / obsolete results.
    Good luck!

  • How do I find a "back door" program or process to re-start my cd drive?

    Hi all,
I have an i Mac that I am attempting to update to a Panther in order to be able to install and use some of my more recent program purchases, including Quickbooks 6 and Turbotax Premium 2005, which require at least a 10.2.8 upgrade to install and run. Within the last week, my cdrw drive in my i Mac has died and we have tried everything we can think of to do or could find ideas for in Macos trouble-shooting books to try to get the upgrade to install. Because the drive isn't working, it would not boot directly under any method, including trying starting from shutoff holding the c, or the Control and c, to get it to boot; it would ask for my administrator password, then tell us to start; then back to the password...an endless cyle.
When none of that worked, we tried loading the upgrade to Panther from my external drive Iomega CDRW but it put us into the same cycle; the man who set up my system (he lives out of state and cannot help us to set it up) said that the 10.1 operating system will allow us to only boot or install the upgrade from a working crdw drive in the i Mac itself.
Because of my current financial situation being what it is, I cannot at this time afford to pay a Mac tech at $90.00/hour or more to work on it, that option is a very last choice on my list I need this upgrade to be able to install the Turbotax to bring in some income.
I have been told by people who are computer techs at Intuit that there are back door programs available that will allow us to install or write a temporary program to re-start my cdrw drive in the i Mac for long enough to do the install and programs I need and for us to make sure everything is operating properly. Can anyone help me out with this? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Also, just a couple of minor questions:
    1. Am I able to install regular software programs, such as Turbotax, without issues, from my external cdrw?
    2. How do I get directly in contact with apple tech help (live help, chat) to get their input as well? I'm not sure how to get there.
    Thank you,
    Old Native Soul

There are no "backdoor" programs that will make a defective optical drive work.
If your iMac has a Firewire port you can use an external Firewire optical drive to boot the Panther Installer Disc provided the external optical drive is bootable. Otherwise, you will need to replace the internal optical drive. If your iMac does not have a Firewire port, then I believe you are out of luck unless you can get the Panther Installer Disc to boot from a USB external drive - doubtful at best.
If you can't afford to have someone fix your computer, then you should consider fixing it yourself. You can find repair manuals here: http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/. You can buy a bare optical drive most anywhere on the internet. Other parts resources include www.welovemacs.com, www.applerescue.com, www.shreevesystems.com. You can also find user review information at www.xlr8yourmac.com.

  • Getting started, sort of

A couple of weeks ago I got my Mindstorm NXT and immediately installed the UI so I could play around with things and become familiar with the interface.  I can tell this will be a lot of fun.  I have heard you can go right to the firmware level and start programming the device at a less abstract level, and that is what I am interested in doing.  I found the link for the Labview toolkit for lego mindstorm over at the NI website, downloaded and tried to install, but the install immediately balks with the following message:
LabVIEW 7.1 or greater must be installed prior to installing the LabVIEW Toolkint for LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT.
I assumed this meant I should uninstall all the stuff that came on the Mindstorm CD (and all the updated installs I downloaded from the Lego website).  So I did that, then tried installing the LabView toolkit again; but I get the same message.
I'm already familiar with the ARM7 in the form of the ST-2051 microcontroller from ST-Micro, so I'm not a complete stranger to ARM and thumb instructions and writing embedded firmware.  I've also worked with a couple of different ST-Micro toolchains, and the Cosmic toolchain, Rowley's toolchain, and embedded linux, so I'm at least vaguely familiar with the trouble I'm looking to get into by wanting to get right into the firmware level and do my development in C or C++ .  On the other hand, I'm an absolute beginner with this toolchain and can't get past the installer, so I know I need to raise my hand and ask for help!   I did write this up and send it to the NI support page, but I never heard back.
So how do I install this thing?  Is there maybe a FAQ or other document for getting the toolchain installed?
    Many thanks!

    Hi zzaappp,
The NXT Toolkit was not designed to work with the software that came with your MINDSTORMS NXT.  Instead, the toolkit is for users of LabVIEW, probably NI's most popular product.  While the MINDSTORMS software and LabVIEW have many similarities, you'll need to obtain a version of LabVIEW to use the toolkit.  A good place to get started on that is this page on our website: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4435.
I'm going to venture a guess, though, and assume that you're probably not very familiar with writing code in LabVIEW.  If you're more comfortable writing code in C or C++, you may be more interested in the Fantom SDK.  Fantom is the device driver used to communicate with the NXT, and our developers have published an SDK that will allow you to use the Fantom library in your own C/C++ code.  This is how many other software developers have written their own programs to communicate with the NXT.  The Fantom SDK is available from LEGO's NXT'reme website: http://mindstorms.lego.com/Overview/NXTreme.aspx.  You'll want to download the Driver SDK and the Bluetooth DK.
Hope this helps you get started!  Let us know if you have more questions along the way.

  • Local control center is not getting started

    Hi all,
we have Linux server installed with OWB 10.2 which will act as CLIENT . And a database unix server (oracle 10g) which is doesnt have OWB installed on it which will act as SERVER.
Now we have created the OWB repository through CLIENT in the database server of the SERVER machine, and the server will be our OWB target database.
IN the scenerio we are able to open th design center. but when we are starting the OWB control services manually ( login as OWB repo Owner) through the client machine , it is not getting started. Failes with the error "run_service.sh not found"
And when we run the service doctor it shows the following message....
"There is a problem accessing the service startup script from the database server
Please verify that the disk containing the file is visible to the database server
Please verify that the database server account has access rights on the file " .
It seems to be the problem with acessing the OS file from client machine through the repo_owner(database owb repo user) which is a part of server database.
Please help me in this regard.

The good thing about the oracle db is that you get the owb installed with the database so you dont run into these kind of problems.
When you install the database and owb together and try to run the controlcenter, the controlcenter comes up on its self via a script at <owbhome>rtp\sql\start_service
Now that you dont have your owb installed on your database you need to run that script with some different paramaters
    Host: servername
    port:1521
    service_name: [email protected]
    schema_name: OWB_OWNER

  • Getting started with oracle and jdbc

    i have downloaded ojdbc14.zip from oracle.com
it's documentation only tells you about the api and the packages and nothing about how to configure it.
how do i get started? where do i unzip those files and what to do next?
    please help

"The Old oracle.jdbc.driver Package Will Go Away Soon
If you still have existing applications that use the
    old oracle.jdbc.driver
package, now is the time to convert your code."
And who is so foolish as to use concrete types
instead of java.sql and javax.sql interfaces or embed
driver class names in their code? Well, anybody who's more interested in optimal performance than being generic, and willing to put up with the headaches of that, such as providers of high-performance OR mapping tools or someone tuning a very heavily used bit. Or anybody working in a committed Oracle-only shop. It's not a one-size-fits-all world...
Again, Oracle is evolving the standard. No, the standard is Sun's java.sql interface.Yea, Sun evolved Java, and Oracle is recommending the use of Datasources to keep step with that evolution...
    This still
works, but Oracle is shifting away from <sid> and
using <service name> instead. The alternate syntax
    for the URL is:
    String url=jdbc:oracle:thin:@<host>:<port>/<database>
This has been true for as long as Oracle has had a
thin, type IV JDBC driver. The URL syntax hasn't
    changed.
Yes it has and Oracle says it has, here:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/java.101/b10979/urls.htm#BEIJFHHB
Wherein it is written, in Section 3.2.1 of the Oracle Database JDBC Developer's Guide and Reference, the sesction on the several supported URL formats for Oracle 10.1
    Notes:
    * Oracle Service IDs are no longer supported at 10g Release 1 (10.1).
They go on to list three URL styles supported:
Oracle Net connection descriptor - like an entry in tnsnames.ora (ick!)
Thin-style service name - the most common, what was quoted above.
LDAP syntax - for having an LDAP service resolve the database for you
However, in the old 8.1.7 JDBC documentation, here:
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/java.817/a83724/basic1.htm#1006213
    Oracle lists support for:
Net8 connection descriptor - Net8 is the old name for Oracle Net
Thin-style sid name - what was quoted in the post to which I first responded.
Thin-style sid name syntax has a colon between the port and the sid; thin-style service name syntax has a forward slash between the port and the service name. SIDs and service names are not the same thing, although they serve the same purpose in a URL (connecting you to the right instance) and often have the same value. However, a SID for a database is set at DB creation time, is unique to the DB, and cannot be changed easily. Multiple service names can be configured for a database, and they can easily be changed (if you're the DBA). Oracle is providing an additional leval of abstraction by moving to service names, to support additional features and choices. While many installations don't need all that and have in essence ignored the distinction bewteen SID and service name, some multi-database projects can benefit from it.
    >
StuDerby, I think you should look into this a bit
more. Your advice is far from optimal, IMO.
Yeah, I could've taken the time to write a more generic, newbie friendly repsonse; instead, I lifted directly from the Oracle documentation that was cited earlier since newbies seem to have an aversion to reading documentation.

  • Using the TNT4882 Linux Driver Inside Instrument

I am running Linux as the operating system inside a piece of test equipment I'm designing (embedded application). I am planning on using the National Instruments TNT4882 GPIB IC. The processor is a Pentium class processor. Will the NI Linux driver for the TNT4882 work for this application? Or does this driver make itself the controller on the GPIB bus no matter what?
Anyone have any experince with this? Thanks!

    Hi Crytan,
This is the type of application for which NI-Device was developed. Ni-Device is an instrument side driver that allows you to implement Talker/Listener applications. NI-Device maps the IEEE 488.2 Message protocol state machine, so the device would be IEEE 488.2 compliant. This would be the recommended driver.
There is a DDK for NI-Device 1.4, which is ported to Linux. The driver is written in C++ and the API is also C++.
This is not a free driver. You can get more info at:

  • How can I get started using MySQL?

I'm really new to jdbc and was wondering if someone could offer some help on where to get started with using java and mysql. I'm not sure if I need extra packages or what and resource of info would be great.
    Thanks

    Hi,
if I knew your environment I would have given you a better response, anyway, for now take this as a general guide
All the instructions here are documented either in JDBC Tutorial or MySQL documentation.
    1) download the lastest JDBC Driver from mysql website:
    http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-jdbc-stable.html
You download either one gz or zip files depends on your OS and unzip it.
    2) place the jar file:mysql-connector-java-3.0.9-stable.jar into your CLASSPATH;
    3) Thats it, just follow the direction in the JDBC Tutorial, like normal,
MySQL driver class name is: org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver
    the URL: jdbc:mysql://<host>:<port default=3306>/<database>?autoReconnect=ture
and change the host, port , and database according to your settings!
Note: I really do not recommend you using the JDBC-ODBC bridge, because it is a solution only if you do not have a direct JDBC driver to your database, its overhead anyway.
    Good luck!

  • When trying to work with Agilent 34401A multimeter (serial RS-232 connection), HP34401A Getting Started.vi gives always the message: "Error 1073807369 occurred at Old VISA Open ".

Baud rate and parity are set correctly, RS-232 cable is also connected correctly. My QuickBasic program has no problems to read and write to the Multimeter. It is obviously a software problem: the same error is persistent if I disconnect RS-232 cable.

    Hello,
First off, I am sorry, I did a search and saw numerous posts on this issue, but about all of them either ended their replies after a user asked "Did you do this or that ?" or they just stopped posting... at most I saw some topics where it magically worked later on, but no real step-by-step instructions.
So, the problem: I installed XE 11g, no apparent problems during install (no warnings so I assume everything is OK), tried the GET STARTED link, but it said it can't connect.

AUD: OS Error = 1717 encountered while writing audit recordFrom what I could gather from other posts here (and on other sites) the problem is I don't have anything listening on 8080. Other than that, all seems OK (I think).
So, can anyone tell me\help me on why that one isn't starting ? I reinstalled this 6 times and still can't figure out the problem... (as you saw, I even replaced the tns hostname with 127.0.0.1 out of paranoia). It's seriously driving me mad. Every topic I searched for (from the problem itself to even a step-by-step for dummies) shows an install, then the interface working... I see some questions regarding "I can't connect to..." but most are unanswered :(
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. let me know if I forgot to mention anything relevant

jgarry: I believe what you explained may be related to the fact some reported the DB doesn't work properly when the event log is full (I just emptied mine so it doesn't apply). Normally I disable it but without it started, the DB is not working properly (not that I can get it started anyway).
There was a post on a site I found hinting at 3 things:
    1. ORACLE_HOME must be defined as an env-var
    2. ORACLE_SID must be defined as an env-var
    3. there might be a problem with spfile
    Regarding those:
    1. shouldn't the setup declare it automatically ? I don't have it declared, but I added it (no change)As Orafad pointed out, Windows is different. It does have a search hierarchy it follows to figure out what the environment should be. So first, unset what you set and go into a cmd window and:
    sqlplus sys as sysdba
    Edit: Oops, I meant
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    startup
    2. same as above, except I am not sure what SID to add so I didn't declare it ... The only 2 I have are PLSExtProc and CLRExtProc in tnsnames by default. I tried with each but the only thing that changes is instead of getting the shared memory realm error I get a TNS adapter error... trading one error for another is not funFor XE, the ORACLE_SID is XE (unless you do screwy things to change it). So now that I see you had some other db installed before, I suspect an environment collision. Delve into your registry and see what oracle definitions you have - this is a lot of work, things are spread around some, but searching for oracle is usually a good start. I'm not up on the 11.2 details (or others, really, I just have vague memories of seeing MOS notes that purported to explain clean up entirely, without truly doing so, and I avoid Windows as much as possible). I would uninstall XE, uninstall the other one, then search the registry for any leftover stuff, then install XE and see if it all magically works. But that is a fairly brain-dead way to deal with it.
So that said, you can set up a little batch file to set your environment in a cmd window (specifically ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID), and go into sqlplus / as sysdba and give the startup command. If you get the memory realm error, you have one of those wrong, if you get the tnsnames errors you can fix those following the advice in Ed Steven's blog. You can run tnsping to see which tnsnames.ora you are using, if you use one (which is determined by an @ sign in your connection string, which you should not need to connect locally, but if you do, you need to have XE defined in the tnsnames.ora, and may need to set TNS_ADMIN to get the right one).
Your tnsnames.ora should have an entry like this:
    XE =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Yourcomputer.yourdomian.whatever)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
)You might want to search for any tnsname.ora on your computer, the default correct one would be: C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\network\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
    3. I don't have that file in the folder but I suspect it might be created on a first successful launch of the DBWithout an spfile you need to use a pfile, then create a pfile from spfile. But there should be one at C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\dbs\SPFILEXE.ORA (if you used default installation).

Other than that I didn't find anything helpful in logs (or don't know where else to look), nor on sites.
I did have WAMP installed at a point (uninstalled it) but if it were to conflict I guess SETUP would tell me (since the XE license doesn't let you use 2 DBs at the same time)Is that some mysql thing? That shouldn't interfere. It's only installing multiple Oracle products related some what to the Oracle database that can be a problem, and normally isn't with the more recent stuff.
I swear to god this is killing my neurons :(When you find the solution, you will slap your forehead.
