Orchestrator and SCCM 2012 integration: run task sequence and install assigned applications/packages?

Dear,
We do not have Orchestrator running in our SCCM 2012 R2 environment. Though I wonder if we could accomplish the following scenario with it:
Task sequence Windows 7 => Orchestrator step which queries assigned installations to the computer object and installs them one by one.
Could you advise?
Kind regards,
Stev.

> > Define "assigned to computer objects". How is this done technically?
Well, computer objects are members of collections via AD memberships, like the collection "W7-Google-Chrome" (exists of 100 computer objects).
Deploy of packages is done to these collections. So a computer member of  "W7-Google-Chrome"  will automatically get Google Chrome.
Some computers are member of 30 collections, some of 80.
Goal is to have the task sequence run all applications/packages assigned (with their reboots if needed).
Kind regards,
Steven

we are having a sccm 2012 sp1 server that used for installation of win 8.1 Enterprise , the task sequence works perfectly fine but when we  run the same task on HP Elite 8300 system having Intel 82579LM Adapter from Windows XP , after the reboot the
task fails as no ip address is assigned the NIC , We did download the WInPE Adapter drivers from HP site and injecting to the x86 Boot Image (6.2.9200) however the task still fails ,
Our environment uses all static ip address , the same task as mentioned earlier has worked fine with Different brands of HP elite 8200/8100 , infact the elite 8200 also uses the same NIC card

    Awating response,
    Hasan Reza

Well Finally I sorted my issue ,
Just want to share the solution, may be it would be helpful to some one else and save some times
The problem was that the Xp images has lot of hidden NIC installed , this would not allow the system to work with the correct NIC card and Ip address (System -> View Hidden Devices) , what I did 2 things
    1) Copied the OSD Script folder from the SCCM Server to the Client pc and ran that ztigather.wsf and captured the output , it was evident that it showed capturing multiple adapters , (There are some blogs that pointed out that OSD can capture only one nic
due to the only one Adapter0 section being defined in the ZTIgather.xml file,)
    2) I open the registry at the xp pc navigated to HKLM-> System ->Current Control Set-> Services-> TCPIP -> Parameters-> Interfaces ->
Expect for the NIC card that had the Ip address assigned I deleted all other nic card's guid,
As then post running deleting the old scanstate (USMTUTIL /rd c:\statestore) , reran the task and VOILA..
All worked fine , below are the two post I followed , though notvery relevant but they were helpful and help me reached the conclusion.
    Thanks,
    Hasan Reza.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 OSD Task Sequence option

Hi, What to have an Install Applications step option that will identify computer record names with embed names for example
embedded name XXX inside a computer record for example:
    Tabletxxx01
    Tabletxxx02
Tabletabc01 - this computer record would skip the TS step.
    Thanks!

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 - OSD Task Sequence - Auto Apply Drivers

I have a basic task sequence created, capture User State, reboot into Windows PE, Apply Operating system, apply Windows Settings, Auto Apply Drivers, Setup Windows and Configuration, Install Applications, Restore User state
The problem I'm having is auto Apply the drivers. My test system is a Dell Opitiplex 3010, with a realtek PCI GBE Family Controller being the only driver added to the driver database.
During the task sequence, I see it down loading the driver, then proceed though the whole sequence. The system restarts and brings up the login. Here is the problem, the network drivers don't install, so the system is still in a workgroup, with no user state
    restore.
I repeat the task, this time during the Setup Windows and Configuration, I press F8, and copy the _SMSTaskSequence folder to C:\temp.
Once the task in complete, I see the network drivers saved in _SMSTaskSequence\Drivers & \contentCache. I able to install the network drivers from this location.
What am I missing, why are the network drivers not being setup correctly in Windows 7?
From the \logs\SMST.LOG, I can see the driver being installed correctly, but one the sequence is complete the driver has not been installed.

  • SCCM 2012 MDT 2012 UDI Require domain credentials to run task sequence

We are in the process of moving to SCCM 2012 integrated with MDT 2012 for OSD from using MDT 2012 by itself. We're trying out UDI task sequences and have noticed a pretty gaping hole in functionality vs MDT 2012 by itself: password protecting a task sequence.
In MDT 2012 there was a built-in feature that required domain credentials to run a task sequence. If one exists using SCCM/MDT 2012, I haven't been able to find it. I've only found stuff like this http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/2336-password-protect-a-task-sequence/ which
would allow you to set a password, but not authenticate against AD. So, I'm wondering if there are any options to protecting a task sequence with domain authentication?
My understanding is that the Refresh and Replace StageGroup only run when you kick off a UDI task sequence in Windows. That means I have to make a task sequence available to the Configuration Manager Client in order for a tech to run a Refresh/Replace. And,
that in turn means that the UDI task sequence will be visible to all users since it needs to be available to their computer. Or, am I completely missing how UDI OSD should flow?  If so, then I hope someone can correct me.
I'd appreciate any help or advice you can give. Thanks.

    Hi,
I am sorry to say that you are correct in your conclusions. There is no builtin way in ConfigMgr/MDT/UDI to require a domain username/password to run a task sequence, your option from Windows-noob.com is one way of solving it.

Thanks for the info. What about workflow? How do you usually handle UDI in Replace and Refresh scenarios? Do you deploy the task sequence to collections that users can access?

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 and MDT 2012 Task Sequence Templates, MDT File/Settings Packages

We're setting up SCCM 2012 integrated with MDT 2012 for our OSD. My main issue is finding actual reference material for the MDT task sequence templates when integrated with SCCM. The MDT documentation has a lot of information on variables and task sequences
    outside of SCCM integration.
One thing I'd love to find information on is what's actually going on during an MDT Client Task Sequence template. I found this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/645a77b2-5be6-431d-818c-57d24b1435cc/understanding-mdt-task-sequence?forum=configmgrosd but
it doesn't delve into the kind of detail I'm looking for. I can dig up information through the MDT reference material on some things, but I just can't find anything out there that actually walks you through an SCCM/MDT task sequence template. For instance,
under State Restore what is being referenced in Install Software with base variable name PACKAGES, vs Install Applications and base variable name COALESCED APPS. And, where are you supposed to put these applications? That's just a specific example, I'm hoping
to find some kind of walkthrough.
Two things I'm hazy on are the MDT packages. What exactly are the MDT Settings Package, and the MDT Files Package? What are they used for? What benefits do you get out of using them? And, how exactly do you use them? I know one of them has something to do
with customsettings.ini, but what's the point of using SCCM with MDT if you still have to muck around in the customsettings.ini file?
Either way, it seems like there are a lot of references to SCCM task sequences, and a lot of references to MDT task sequences. But, not together. Which is a bit annoying since the MDT-integrated task sequence templates are very obviously different than either
SCCM or MDT by itself. Any help would be appreciated, even just information on where to look. Maybe I'm just really bad at finding reference material for SCCM/MDT. Thanks.

When MDT integrated with SCCM, We need the following MDT components to be created:
    MDT Boot image
    MDT Toolkit Files
    MDT Settings
The MDT boot image (for example) gives you extra abilities over the standard ConfigMgr boot image such as the ability to display a HTA Refer here:
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/forum/98-frontends-and-web-services/
MDT Files once created, you will find UDIWizard_Config.Xml file in which you can start User driven Installation OSD using UDI designer.
Refer these links for better understanding:
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5131-using-sccm-2012-rc-in-a-lab-part-16-integrating-mdt-2012-rc1-with-configuration-manager-2012/

    Thanks, Prabha G
Thanks for the quick reply. But, what about the MDT Settings Package? Also, both have a pretty big folder structure for each package. Surely it does more than just provide a couple xml and ini files? I'm not looking for anyone to spoon-feed me the information,
but at least a pointer in the right direction for finding the reference material. It seems for SCCM/MDT integration you have to go all over the place finding scraps of information to put together.
Also, any info on the SCCM/MDT task sequence templates? Thanks.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Task Sequence Step "Install Package" downloads all content

    Hello,
Task Sequence step "Install Package" I have several packages with multiple programs. When I use one of these packages with one of its programs it appears to download all the package content is there a workaround to stop this
    from happening?
    Regards!

    Hi,
You could change it to run directly from the DP, then it will only use the files it needs and doesn't download anything at all. You will have to make sure that all the content needed by the task seqeunce is copied to the package share otherwise it will not
    work in a task sequence.
The other would be to split up the package in multiple packages if that is possible.

  • Failed to run task sequence - 80004005. DNS working though.

I seem to be getting a fairly common generic error but with possibly with a slight difference then some of the other problems/answers I have seen.  Generally it looks like this is a DNS issue but I am not sure in my case.
Let me 1st describe my infrastructure and what I am trying to accomplish.  System Center 2012 R2, trying to deploy server 2012.  We use PKI on the main MPs/DPs.  I have another DP that I will use for OSD content that
won’t use PKI.  I am 1st attempting to use boot media, vs PXE, to image a computer.  I have distributed the content to the DP, created a boot media USB and everything looks good there as far as I can tell.  My boot media
selects the PKI MP and we have created the client cert and I direct it to the non-http DP.  The process seems to accept the certificate and the boot media creation completes.  Next boot off the media on the computer and drop into Windows PE where
I can manually enter the IP information.  When I click next the process fails.
    Error:

-Can I ping the SCCM site servers?  Yes, I can ping, both short and FQDN, the primary, MP, DP.
Looking at the SMSTSLog I see the following lines/errors.
1)Failed to open PXE registry key.  Not a PXE boot.
2)Failed to find the source drive where WinPE was booted from
But then the next line is:  Executing from Media WinPE
These 2 are at the top of the log and the process seems to continue on with the IP and variable information.  These are the lines of information later in the log with the error(s):
    -CLibSMSMessageWinHTTPTransport::Send:URL: (my MP)
-In SSL, but with no client cert
    -Error.  Received 0x80072ee7 from WinHttpSendRequest.
    -Hr,HRESULT=80072ee7
    -sending with winhttp failed, 80072ee7
    -m_pHttp Transport -> (etc….)
    -MPKeyInformation.RequestMPKeyInformationForMedia
-Failed to get information of MP: https//(my MP)
So I am wondering where I start.  I don’t see that unknown host line that seems to indicate that it is a DNS issue.  I see some stuff about the in SSL but with no cert.  Does this mean that the cert we had to create isn’t working correctly?
    We pretty much followed
    http://www.jamesbannanit.com/2012/05/how-to-build-and-capture-in-configuration-manager-2012-using-https/
I have also looked through this
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2009/07/27/a-step-by-step-for-using-osd-through-system-center-configuration-manager-2007.aspx
And I have pretty much everything done there except a network access account.  Looking at my settings I am set to, “Use the computer account of the Configuration Manager client”  However, my computer I am trying to image is a “WORKGROUP” and not
joining the domain.  But.. am I really getting that far in the process?  Would I be failing to get policy because of this or does this just come into play when I try to get the OS from the DP?

    Have you seen this thread?

  • Failed to run task sequence. Error occurred while starting the task sequence (0x8007000E)

    Hi there
Patch Tuesday yesterday (10th June2014). As always we deploy new patches first to a test collection where Windows 7 updates automatically apply.
Upon trying to rebuild any of the machines in this test collection, we were presented with the following error message:
Failed to run task sequence.  Error occurred while starting the task sequence (0x8007000E)
After searching about this, I found this page from Niall Brady, which explained the problem:
    http://www.niallbrady.com/2013/05/17/after-selecting-a-task-sequence-in-configuration-manager-2012-sp1-you-receive-threadtoresolveandexecutetasksequence-failed-code0x8007000e-in-smsts-log/
So I removed some of the machines from the test Windows update collection, and as per the advice in the above link, the error was gone and those machines could be built successfully.
So the problem is there were too many many policies downloaded (apps, packages and most of all updates) for the task sequence ram to store, hence the error.
    Now...
    ...I have a question.
The next logical step to my mind is to patch our OS image with all missing patches, so these do not have to be downloaded at build time. Niall mentions this as one of the resolutions to this issue.
However there seems to be some confusion over whether this would actually make a difference.
    I read through this link:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7e597b44-2586-4063-b6d0-cec48a7c11c7/sccm-2012-task-sequence-failure-0x8007000e?forum=configmanagerosd
There's seems to be no consensus on this.
Is SCCM 2012 clever enough to - when the task sequence is first started - to download ONLY the updates (policies) it detects as NOT present in the OS image...
    or
Will it simply try to download policies for ALL items deployed to it, whether the updates are present in the OS image or not?
I will be disappointed if SCCM 2012 SP1 CU2 isn't clever enough to only download policies at build time for the apps, packages and updates it detects as needed.
I'd be grateful for some clarity on this.
    Regards,
    John, Glasgow.

    Hi Jason
Thank you for replying, I appreciate it.
    1) We currently have 15 or 16 software update groups for Office updates, dating back a month or two. The latest software update group contains all the patches in the previous software update groups plus the patches released on 10th June. Do you recommend
deleting all but the latest software update group?
    2) I'm almost reluctant to ask this, but based on what you have advised, is it the case that when the task sequence executes, it will download policies for each update in each software update group regardless of whether it has already downloaded a policy
for an update in a previous software update group? So in effect it's downloading policies (for updates) it has already downloaded?
    3) I'm not clear on why there would be no policy for an image; in Niall Brady's informative page on the 8007000E error, he writes the following:
"The reason it has run of space could be due to four possibilites: too many applications, too many Windows updates, too many Task Sequence steps, too many referenced packages'.
Can you shed some light on why there isn't a policy for an image?
    Thanks again for replying,
    John.

  • Fails to run Task Sequence (error 0x80008014)

    Hello,
I am facing a strange problem.
The environment is a SCCM 2007 SP2 system.
I am using Task sequences for many years now. For OS deployment and deploying multi application updates.
packages / programs are configured with admin rights and whether or "no user is logged on"
I integrated these packages /programs in a os deployment task. This was successful.
When using the same packages / programs in a task sequence for deploying these software packages the ts faisl.
Checking exexmgr.log I can see the following message "TS Step required to run in user context, targeted to user or requiring user input. Rejecting." Which I don't understand at all.
I stripped down the ts to only one application to install. The error is the same.
In other logs I found these error messages:
Failed to delete registry value HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\Task Sequence\System Health Agent. Error code 0x80070002
failed to invoke execution manager to install software for package id
Í checked the SCCM client on the SCCM server and the one which is installed. Both are version 4.00.6487.2000.
Thanks for your feedback on this,
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • MDT 2012 Replace computer task sequence

    Hello all,
I am using MDT 2012 Update 1 for upgrading over 200 machines from Windows XP to Windows 7.
Some of these machines are going to be REFRESH scenario. I have the task sequence for REFRESH scenario and it is working as expected.
However, I do not know how to create REPLACE scenario task sequence. From what I understand, I need to create two tasks sequences. I have created a task sequence that capture user's data and upload it to a share.
But how do I create a restore task sequence that restores that data to another computer after installing OS? What do I need to in the restore task sequence that either prompts me to select where to restore the data from or knows where the data is?
In SCCM there is computer association, but I have not been able to figure out how to do it purely using MDT.
Any expert help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

Right, you will need 2 task sequences in a replace scenario.  The REPLACE task sequence captures the user state from the running OS.  Then you use a NEW COMPUTER task sequence (I called mine RESTORE) that restores the user state back after installing
the OS, which will boot from media or PXE.  RESTORE gets all of its values from the Default and Jackson sections. My apologies, my customsettings.ini is butchered and has comments and junk in it that I should remove to clean it up.  And you will
have to edit the code as described in the settings per task sequence thread for my cs.ini to work.  And, I set my OSDComputerName=%assettag%.  I set my Dell asset tags in the BIOS with the Dell CCTK tool.

  • Download content locally when needed by running task sequence functionality with Windows PE.

I am trying to understand what happens when the "Download content locally when needed by running task sequence" option in chosen on a task sequence deployment. My assumption is that any needed packages would not be identified
and downloaded until task sequence is kicked off.
Using task sequence boot media, it looks likes a package has been obtained before any task sequence has been selected. I am assuming the package was acquired during the WinPE boot process. Can anyone confirm that this is
the correct behavior when using the "Download content locally when needed by running task sequence" option? If not, how would WinPE be obtaining the PS100292 SCCM package?
This specific package contains and HTA file. Only one of  several task sequences deployed to the All Unknown Computers make a call to the HTA file. The one that does, the HTA call is the very first step of the task sequence.
    --Tony

Hi everyone! I figured what was going on here. I was using an ESX VM and the package was stored on the c:\ from previous attempts and troubleshooting. Long story short, I had to rip the HDD from the VM and add a new one to set every thing back.

We had a SCEP ADR applying definition updates to All Systems, we applied the ADR to a different collection, removed all the SCEP updates to All Systems and successfully re-imaged the workstation. Following article was of great help in identifying the problem
