Order of software installation on new MBP

I have ordered a new Mac Book Pro, plus Windows and Parallels. I also need to load new Mac software on the MBP, plus some Windows apps like Explorer 6. I am wondering about the order to do the installs.
For example, should I handle the Windows stuff first, since that will partition the drive, and then follow up with installing my Mac applications?
I'm new to Windows, and the packages haven't all arrived so I haven't read the manuals. But I'm trying to make a plan. Should I install Windows before Parallels, or should Parallels go first?
Should I install Boot Camp at all if I'm planning to use Parallels? Is it Boot Camp that actually partitions the drive?
Please excuse my ignorance. We are a Mac family but my son has encountered college applications that are Windows only, or will only run on Explorer 6 (not avilable for Mac). He's already suffering and I need to get the MBP up and running Windows quickly. I doubt I'm any good at troubleshooting Windows.

You can't install Windows without Parallels.
Of course you can, using Boot Camp. Once it is installed by Boot Camp then you also have the option of running it under Fusion or Parallels.
Installing in Fusion or Parallels without using Boot Camp is just one option.
If you plan to use Boot Camp it makes sense to do it first, before you load a lot of OS X applications, just to make sure that you have room to create the Windows Partition.

  • Software transferrable to new MBP?

I have an early 2008 MBP with Parallels/Windows 8 and a lot of software on the Mac side. Is this software, both the Mac and Windows 8 (no programs operating in windows, just the OS) transferrable to a new MBP if I decide to buy a new one? Thanks all..

You would do better if you check your older software on the App Compatibility Table website to see if it will work with Mountain Lion -

  • New MBP and transferring software

I've just ordered a new MBP w/ retina and want to transfer all my sofware to the new computer from my older MBP. Will migration assistant move software as well as files or only files to the new computer. Is there an easy way to move my software (office 2011, aperture and CS3) to the new computer?

I would have both your new and your old computer on the same network, via Ethernet cables, and when you first start-up your new machine elect to use Migration Assistant to tranfer everything from your old machine to the new. It will transfer you user data, your settings, your apps - everything except the 'old' system files. I've used this technique a number of times with no problems. It's what MA is supposed to be used for and works quite well.
    Good luck,

    Check out a site: freemacware.com
They have a lot of great things.
Basically if you google search something, you can find whatever you want for mac.
Another great resource is going to www.apple.com, click on the MacOSX tab, then click downloads.
This shows you new releases of many apple products: Demos, Freeware, Shareware, and Updates.
You can also check out versiontracker.com for the latest versions of 3rd party software.
Congrats on your purchase. If you're into Video editing I would try out Final Cut Express HD, it is initially difficult to use, but very powerful once you figure it out.
    Good Luck!

  • Just Got New MBP and need to reinstall Software

I just got a 15inch MBP and installed Final Cut Studio 2 which I did not know was 55 gigs. I want to install it on an external HD so I want to reinstall Leopard with my disc I received when I bought my MBP from Apple. Will I still get all of my extras such as ilife with my install disc and will it restore it to factory (as I received it when I first bought it?) Thank you!

An 'erase and install' will remove EVERYTHING from your harddrive, and if you've already got Leopard installed, that's your only option.
Reintalling Leopard will NOT install iLife; to my knowledge there are no Leopard+iLife 08 install DVDs. . . just Leopard DVDS. I may be wrong, as I have an old Mac and not a new one, which may come with a software package I've never seen (but I'm getting my GF a new MBP for Christmas!!). I think you need to (and should have) a seperate iLife 08 disk with which you can reinstall iLife.
A couple of questions and some advice:
-I assume you have at least a 120gb harddrive. Why do you want to install FCP2 onto an extrnal DVD? If you plan to use that space to store media, it would be a better idea to store the media (i.e. the video footage, etc) on an external drive and keep your FCP application on your internal HD.
-Also, if you are going to run FCP on an external HD, get a FIREWIRE 800 external HD. They are quite a bit more expensive, but I had a LOT of problems just using FCP1 to edit footage stored on an external USB HD . .. I can't IMAGINE the problems you would have running FCP2 off of a USB external HD.
-Thinking about it again, where are you going to store your footage? On the same external HD as FCP? I think that will work . . .
    Looking forward to hearing more!

I have iWork 09 with a family license. I am unable to install the software on my new Macbook Pro (the message is simply "Installation failed"). I wonder if I need to remove an old computer from the family license, and if so, how?

Yes, gladly. I am trying to install on a 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.3. I insert the disk into the SuperDrive. The I work '09 window pops up with two icons: one Tim install and one that says "Read before you install iWork." I double-click on the "Install iWork '09" icon, and a window appears that says, "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed." I click "continue" and see "Welcome to the iWork '09 installer." I click on "Continue." The "read me" bullet on the left lights up, and I see "Read before you install. . . ." I click "Continue," then see the software license agreement. When I click on "Continue" again, I am asked to agree, and I do. The window then says, "Standard Install on 'Mackintosh HD" and indicates how much space the program will take.
I click "Install," enter my password, and the installation begins. It goes through a validating phase and begins "writing files." It indicates that installation will take about 30 minutes (although that number fluctuates). After about four minutes it goes to "cleaning up." Then after just a few seconds, the "Summary" bullet on the left lights up and this message appears: "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing again." There is a large yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, and a bold "The installation failed." Below that appears "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
At that point, a "Close" button is pulsating blue at the bottom of the window.
Sorry for the tedious detail. Anything revealing there?
    Thanks!

I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

  • New MBP 15", Windows installation fails with error 0x80070570 or 0x80070570D

    Hey guys!
I finally got a new MBP a few weeks ago, and I wanted to install a Windows partition for some games. I have tried this with several different windows copies (both legal and illegal, and both of windows 7 and windows 8), but to none avail. The exact error message I keep getting is:
    Windows 7:
"Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or mossing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070570"
    Windows 8:
"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070570D"
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I've let the bootcamp utility put the disk images on the USB. As I mentioned before, I got the Windows installation images through various legal and illegal sources and made several attempts with each and evere disk image, so that should not be the cause.

The YouTube app is not included in iOS 6. You will either need to try one of the YouTube apps from the store (there is an iPhone optimised app from google), or try accessing it via Safari : http://m.youtube.com (you can create a home screen shortcut for the site)

  • New MBP, how to transfer software/data from old MBP

I'm picking up a new MBP in a few days. I've upgraded in the past but it's been five yrs. What are the current best practices for moving from old to new MBP's?

Use the Setup Assistant in the new computer. First, connect the two computers using a Firewire cable. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode. Boot the new computer normally for the first time. You will be greeted by the Setup Assistant. Follow the on-screen instructions until you are asked about migrating from another computer or Time Machine backup. Opt for another computer and go with the instructions. You will be guided to migrating your old computer's Home folder, third-party applications, support software, and system preferences.
Now, this process will take quite some time so be patient.
The following may be useful reading although it is about using the Migration Assistant. This tool is exactly like the one used in the Setup Assistant. How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac.

Hi Carolyn thanks for your help, is 10.7.3 the latest software.
It is the latest point release of the Lion operating system. This does not contain any other softeware updates.
Check that the clock is set correctly. Check that your region (country) is set correctly. Reboot and try Software Update again.
I will disagree here, use the combo updater, in fact, always use the combo updater.
So the Combo updater updates all software also? itunes, iphoto Garage band and all other included software?
Funny I can't find that info anywhere on the Apple release notes for Combo updaters.

  • My very new MBP 13" freezes. Not a software issue.

    Hey,
My brand new MBP (Lion) has a great time for a while, but then freezes with three alarms sounding.    (see pic - I also have video if people want to see.)
The Apple Care people "have not heard of such a thing", have been very helpful, but believing it to be a software compatibility problem, have given me some assorted solutions to try.  They mean well.
I run Adobe CS5.5, Filemaker Pro 11, Microsoft Office 2011 and Firefox.
I have deleted StartUp items, (same result), in fact, almost every day I have had the computer home, this has happened.
I have backed up with Time Machine and erased the entire HD, downloaded and clean installed Lion.   Three and a bit Gig later, the same thing has happened, with no software installed except the Lion system software.
This is clearly NOT a software issue and I need a solution very soon.  My company purchased this interstate.

That's the strange thing.   Trying to run the Apple Hardware Test after a reboot with 'D' pressed and it ignores the request.
Solution found.    It was bad RAM chips.
Chadstone Apple Store in Melbourne replaced the chips and turned it around for me in under 20 minutes.
Very impressed.   Running like a trooper now.   Thanks Apple.  Confidence restored.

  • There should be a new System Update like good old Software Installer

I believe that there was once a program called Software Installer that was replaced by System Update. I liked the old one because of its clear layout and information: There was a column with software installed, column with current version and column with most up-to-date version of the software. Then you had checkboxes to indicate which programs you want to be updated, check them and start the update and it worked fine. In fact Productivity center still uses similar dialog for installation
What I don't like about System update:
    1. Half of the time the Package server is unavailable. Everybody who ever used System Update knows that.
1a. While the package server is unavailable the packages (I mean software install files) are available through tthe software.
    2. Dowloading 400kb of update list (or whatever) takes forever. At least its the longest 400 kb I've seen on my internet connection. This is especially ridiculous when you can just go to support website and check the updates yourself in seconds. Why can't System Update just comunicate with the website. It serves the same purpose and?
    3. you can't use any of the information from the previous session: I have downloaded graphics driver and it is on the hardrive but it will install only after System update connects to database. I can install it manually but couldn't system update display it as some sort of avaible file?
    4. There are four tabs to display my 3 updates, couldn't it all fit in one window? Also I have to expand the view to see my current and up-to-date version of software. I just click to install and I never notice which version was installed actually. Later when having problems I can't tell which version of software I'm having problems with.
    5. Sometimes updates just dissapear. I once uninstalled Access Connections and since then System Update never showed it as an available update.
The way I see it the System Update software should rewritten almost fully. There is no way that the software that is suppose to help you update the system is slower and less reliable than a user writing down the updates, downloading and installing them through the website.
Having that said I'm not totally negative, for example it is a great  feature is that an update is unatended for a group of updates. Yet it seems that System Update is somehow on the worng track.
