Organizer - Six Mystery photos

I have six pictures in the first folder of organizer that are duplicates of the next six.  I cannot select the duplicates or get rid of them and it is causing six pictures to be displaced in each subsequent folder in organizer.  These displaced pictures cannot be moved either.  I have tied everything I can think of - any ideas?

This is not something I have encountered (I go back to Album 1) but a catalog repair was a logical starting point. Anything I say at this point is a guess (educated as I am a retired programmer but not for Adobe).
If I were encountering this problem I would try the following which are fairly low risk (I assume you have a current backup):
a)     Optimize. This might fix a bad link although I doubt it.
b)     Rebuild thumbnails. (same)
If problem persists then I would start a new catalog by importing folder by folder.
c)     Write tags to all photos to be sure you don't lose that info.
d)     Create a new catalog
e)     Eliminate watched folders (to avoid complications).
f)     Import folder by folder. Depending on how you organize the folders this might even be one step with subfolders handled automatically.
g)     The tags will be in the imported tax list and re-creating the categories and subcategories is straightforward.
The main problem is photos in the folders that you don't want in the catalog. I keep my folders pretty clean and for me this is easy.
Hopefully you will get better advice from Adobe, but at least this gives a backup plan.

  • Can I back up the organizer, move my photos and still access them in PSE?

I backed up my catalog to an external HD last night and there were about 20 disconnected files.  I was not able to locate them so I allowed the back up to continue without them.  Do you know what the consequences are for that?
Also, several of my photos are on my C drive and several are on the external HD.  My catalog included photos from both places. When I move the rest of my photos from the C drive of my computer to the external HD will the catalog still be able to access them or will I need to back everything up again?
My goal is to free up space on my computer so PSE will stop freezing up.  All I'm intersted in doing right now is getting all of my photos into the organizer and tagged.  I'll edit them later as I begin to create digital scrapbook pages.
Can someone tell me if the way I'm going about this is correct?
    Thank you,

Thank you Ken.  I backed up everything to my external HD, but now I think I'd rather just move everything there and recall my photos from the ext HD to free up space on my C drive.  Is that possible?

When you use PSE to back up your catalog, the actual photos as well as the catalog (database) are backed up. When you restore from a backup, you can specify where the incoming photos will be placed. Ken

  • Can I organize my iPhone photos on my Macbook and transfer them in the new folders to my iPhone?

I have created all the albums I need to organize all the photos in my Camera Roll on my iPhone. There are way too many photos, so I would like to plug my iPhone into my Macbook and use iPhoto and organize all my photos from my phone into those new albums, then have the photos inserted into the new albums transfered back to my iPhone. Is this all possible or am I just better off organizing them all on my iPhone?

If you mean the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings, it's still where it's always been.  In iTunes go to View>Show Sidebar to make the new version look more like previous versions.  Then connect your phone, click on the name of your phone on the left side, and Photos will show on the top right.

  • Is there an ORGANIZER for my photos which I can seperatly store on an external harddrive?

Is there an ORGANIZER for my photos which I can separately store on an external hard drive?

Okay, this is it. I only need the organizer and catalogue (as a kind of archive) separately. I do not want to work with and shop the pictures. Just want to store and find the pics.
I hope you understand what is in the catalog. Pardon me if you already know, but other readers might be misled by this discussion.
A catalog is just like the catalog booklet which holds all the information about the paintings in a museum. A list of all the paintings, their location in the museum, their size, their authors and some history. Plus small images (thumbnails) to show the image and many indexes, by title, author or painting type.
The catalog does not contain the images, only useful information to find paintings and know what is useful about them.
The catalog can be moved: you can take it at home with you. The informations are still valid when you move the catalog.
With the organizer (it's the same with Ligthtroom), you can move or copy the catalog, which is a folder containing the database and associated files and subfolders.
To use the Elements catalog outside of your main computer, you need another computer with a copy of the same Elements program. The catalog itself on an external drive is just a kind of backup, but it can't be read. So you can store a copy on an external drive, but to open the catalog you need Elements. Imagine you plug in the catalog external drive from another computer. Without a copy of the picture files, only the information and thumbnails can be seen. You can do various organization tasks like adding tags, creating albums, rating, adding notes.
If that is what you want to do and you can plug in the external drive on another computer with Elements, that's fine (you can have two copies of Elements 'signed in' at the same time).

  • How can I organize all my photo's in Iphoto

I would love if someone could tell me how I can create less folders in Iphoto to organize my photos. Every time I import something new iphoto puts it into a new folder, from the past 3 years I have way too many folders and would like to organize them in a better way, any suggestions? thank you

    ewarner:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As PhillyPhan warned doing anything within the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder is a big NO-NO.
But if, within iPhoto, you drag and drop thumbnail files from one roll to another that will move those files in the Finder automatically and you can consolidate files into fewer, more meaningful rolls and folders. BUT, it has to be done from within the iPhoto application window only.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Organizer not showing photos in thumbnails...only getting grey square w/hour glass

The organizer is only showing a blank grey square as the thumbnail and not the actual photo.  However, once I click on the thumbnail, the photo pops up and is veiwable.  This is a problem that just recently started.  All of my other photos, in other albums, are viewable as thumbnails in the organizer.

Is the problem specific to some particular images?Does right click>Update thumbnails helps?
It would be good if you could recreate your thumbnials.

  • Icon appearing in Organizer instead of photo

I have Elements 11, using a PC, windows 8.1. I imported some photos from my camera's card and all images appeared in Organizer. I made some minor changes to a few (crop, red eye), and did a "save as," giving the photo a new name, and making the name changes while in Elements. Now, both the original image and the save as image appear in Organizer and Editor as a grayed out box, with an icon of a page with the corner folded over and a jagged line in the bottom right corner. The file name shows in Organizer, as well as the General Information and Metadata Information. If I go to my File Explorer and set it for thumbnails, I can see the original and edited images there. What have I done wrong and how can I correct this?
    Thank you.

It was my understanding that one could not change the language from the purchased edition, so like I say this is odd.
I would reset the preferences to factory defaults and see if that gets it back to English.  To do this close Bridge and then press and hold the Ctrl key and start Bridge.  You should get a  reset window with 3 options.  Choose all 3.

  • Best way to organize a large photo library on a 10.6.8 Macbook?

I have an older Macbook pro- version 10.6.8.
I am looking for the best way to organize my large library of photos (approx. 15,000).  I have both personal as well as professional photos that I would like to organize and keep separately. I currently use iPhoto'09 version 8.1.2 but it has become very slow and I would like to find a solution that uses better organization.  I am considering keeping my personal photos in iPhoto and my professional photos in another organization app.  I was thinking about purchasing Aperture, however it is only available for Mac OS X version 10.7.5 or later and the same goes for the latest version of iPhoto.
I am a little confused about what my options are.  Can anyone recommend anything?  I am looking simply for a good organization tool, I am not interested in photo editing or anything beyond that.

Well now we know that the speed problem is in your old library. Repair it.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Backing Up:
Time machine will back up, yes. Just be sure it's set up correctly.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

  • Organize and browse photos Chronologically

I recently moved from PSE 5 through PSE 7 (2 months using version that came with my Epson Scanner), and then to PSE9. Now I'm coming accross some of fhe idosyncronisities of the Organizer that are discussed in other threads. I'm also seeing where many posters are saying that Folder Location View is very broken and that PSE9 is not intended to be a folder view organizer. There are so many quirks in this version I wish I wasn't so invested in PSE.
Since I like to keep my photos mainly organized by Chronological order and by event or location, I would like to hear how others out there are doing it. I'm finding that the views other than Folder View are no better, and in many ways worse. For example, There are only two ways to view the files in Thumbnail view, Olderst first and Newest First..Well, the photo are all jumbled together without a delineation on date or event. Even if I had the witherall to go through my entire collection and tag them, I don't think the display would seperate them. And the tag isn't readily readable in the display like a folder path would be. Maybe I'm wrong, so if other have accomplished this, I'd love to hear about it.
Another problem in Thumbnail View is the ways that PSE decides the order. I'm gessing here but...  If a photo was from a camera, I then it picks up the Metadata in the file, but if it was scanned in, it uses the scan date or the date the file was created. I'm in the process of scanning a huge number of slides and negatives from times past so these are classified as 'Newer' when in fact I want them to be 'Older'. I think I saw ways to alter the dates, but that means more steps in the process and I still don't get the event organization.
Even if I tagged everything (which is a big effort) I'd still need a  similar organization of the tags. It would be impossible to find things  in Explorer or say another photo browser if I were to use that to  publish my photos online say in Picasa albums.
And the import batch view is totally useless. Who really cares about that? And there seems to be othe quirks there, like the way TimeLine window works.
Well, unless I get an inspiration from some place, I'll continue to limp along with Folder View where I create the folder structure which does give me control of how the files are ordered.
    FYI: My main scheme is:
    My Pictures
      <year>
          <Year-month Event>
<Sets, if this was created from sets of slides or film.>
Also sometimes I have other Folders under this because I have a camera that creates subfolders that I maintain when I use the Panarama assist mode where I can stitch together multiple images into a panarama.
Anyway, I'd like to hear how others are dealing with these issues.
    Thanks,
    DoctorBrown

    >I'm not sure I see any benefit to a tag that says Set-01 and Set-02 as I think I will forget what these mean as the years go by. I would use a descriptive tag, such as "Cruise", "Mountains", "Anchorage" etc.
Again, I am creating my primary order to be by Year-Month and order they were taken. Captions, Tags and Albums will be used to fill in the description, location and make groupings for selected shots. Or if useful, Tags can help with this primary order.
These Sets are older rolls of film or slides (I could call it Roll-001, etc, But the slides are no longer in a roll. ) that I've scanned in and have physically labeled as such (with detailed location) and organized in the order they were taken and grouped by the trip I was on. Therefore I can know exactly where to find the slide if I want to go to it. All the rolls from a given trip are located in a folder that is labled with the trip identifier, with each roll in a subfolder. When I went on these trips I'd use like 25 rolls of film. As like many photographers, I take many more shots than I will ever present in a slide show, print, etc. I probably should delete many more than I do, but I keep them. I do plan to further caption them to add this location info.
I am very aware of ability for multiple heirachial tags. I'm also aware that you can attach multiple tags to each image. I'm spending a lot of time getting these onto my system and debating how much time to spend tagging all these older shots. I'm trying to work with the capabilities of PSE so I can use them the way I want.
    > I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean, but if I understand you properly, tags give you this capability.
In the past, you could set the option so that you see the photos in all the folders and then you could scroll through all your photos. The full path of each folder was displayed in a banner line that separated the folders. Similar to how the Batch View does now. I would click on a folder to get quickly to the starting point and then page up/down review what's near that point to select ones for further use. I found that very useful. Also, I really like keyboard operations (Page up, page down, etc) and want a way to page through multiple tags (or folders as used to be the case). The current implimentation of PSE does neither in a way that's useful.  If I could do the same with the Tag heirachy then the tags would be much more useful.
The Batch view has scroll/page capability but the order is nothing like I want to see them. Thumbnail View displays strictly by date and has no concept of the groupings that I want and I can't configure it to do so. In addition, these scanned images are getting dated as of the scan  date but I want them to be in the order by the year-month and order they  were taken. If I have a specific tag on images in multiple folders, I can only see all the photo with that tag in Thumbnail or Batch View.
I also have a whole host of reasons why the TimeLine window doesn't work for me. (but that's for another thread.)
I do realize that not everyone wants to see their photos these ways. But the product should have sufficient flexibility to accomodate a wide range of preferences. I've spent a great deal of time in earlier PSE versions getting things the way I want and changing to a new organizer would entail huge amount of time. So I'm really not relishing the thought of changing organizers. And I still think the editor is one of the best, if not the best, around.

  • Why does Flip-Pal Scanner's SD card down load photos to Organizer even the photo is already in Organizer?

Why does Flip-Pa Scanner's SD card down load photos to Organizer even though the photos are already in Organizer.  My preferences are to not load again photos already in Organizer.  My camera SD card loads photos only one time.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Is Elements Organizer 9 robust (powerful) enough to organize 10,000 photos without crashing?

I'm scanning literally thousands of photos from my 40 years as a photographer. I'm currently using Elements Organizer 9 to keep them organized using keytags and dates. I want to know if I can trust this basket to hold ALL my "eggs". I'm afraid I may get a "corrupt catalog" error message and all my work will be null and void. I would love to switch to using Adobe Bridge but it's out of my price range right now as I'm home on disabnility with a torn shoulder.
Does anyone know of Elements Organizer can handle 10,000 plus photos without crashing?

I have been using PSE6, PSE10, PSE11 and PSE12 with catalogs containing 50 000 items. There has been posts about users with more than 100 000 items. The organizer offers a good backup scheme.
I'm afraid I may get a "corrupt catalog" error message and all my work will be null and void. I would love to switch to using Adobe Bridge but it's out of my price range right now as I'm home on disabnility with a torn shoulder.
A 'corrupt' catalog is something very rare, but you'll see many posts about catalogs containing 'corrupt' media files (mainly videos). The risk is minimal if you regularly use the built-in tools to repair and optimize the catalog and do regular backups.
One of the main concerns about losing one's organization is about keywords, captions, tags and notes. The organizer lets you save those data to the files themselves, so that they are accessible to any other editing software.
A PSE9 catalog can be read and converted to more recent Elements versions, as well as by Lightroom. I would advise upgrading to PSE12 when you can, but PSE9 is still a valid option.

  • Aperture - how to organize lots of Photos with MBA ?

    Hi,
Apologies if this may be a repeated question (I know this has probably been asked for million times).
I am sincerely looking for some advise to structure and organize my photos, hopefully to get it right at the beginning rather than fixing afterwards.   Thanks in advance.
    - I have around 50k+ photos, taking about 1,000 per month
    - I just got a MBA, so obviously, I can't squeeze all these into the MBA
    - therefore, thinking to go for "Referenced Library" approach to store the masters in an external NAS
Question 1 : can anyone recommend for how should I organize and where to store the Aperture library, the master, and the backup ?
Question 2 : can anyone recommend for a flow and structure I should be following after taking some pictures ?
    For example, should I :
    1. first import all pictures into MBA, removing the unwanted, then relocate the master to NAS ? or,
    2. import all pictures into NAS, then perform the select and deletion .... etc.
As reference, here is what I have :
    1. a 1TB timecapsule
    2. a MBA just bought, with ~170GB free
    3. a NAS (mirrored, connected to the timecapsule), with ~ 1.7TB space
Background : I am not professional.  However, these pictures meant a lot to me so very keen to find a proper way to safekeep and organize them. Any experience / advise would be mostly welcome.  Much appreciated.

  • Mysterious photo in Account ID

How can I find the path to the photo assigned to my account id?
I can't seem to find it in any of my photo files.
I'm not sure how it got assigned to the account, I was playing around with photobooth the other day and when one of the photos mysteriously started appearing on my email and I discovered it had been assigned to the account. I know how to change the image at the account level if I want to assign something else instead, but the trouble is I like the photo and I'd like to use it for other things but it isn't appearing in the photobooth or picture folders. Any ideas?

It must be frustrating trying to locate it without knowing where to look!
If all you want is to be able to use that file for other things, just open your Mail program so that the picture is showing, and then press command-shift-4. Use the crosshair to draw a box around the image. A copy of it will be saved on your desktop.

  • Various organization schemes for photos.

The yearly organization via iPhoto doesn't help me. Many of my photos are imported from the scanner; the year of the scan is not the same as the year the photo was taken. Also I do not want to do a one-by-one date change.
I would like to have all the photos on my drive in one folder using the names I enter for them so I can search for photos by the name and not by the year it was imported. I'm willing to have two folders: Original and Modified if necessary but I would like get away from the year folders.
Is that possible with iPhoto? If so how? If not, is there another application that offers that function?
    Thanks, Alan
G5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Broadband via Comcast

I have scanned in about 12,000 old photos into iPhoto. None of them has the correct date of the photo because the date given is the date I imported it. This does not concern me in the least. I do not mess with the internal file system of iPhoto outside the application.
I manage the photos first by creating multiple libraries by year, using iPhotoBuddy. You can also use iPhotoLibraryManager for this.
For example, I have now about 9 different iPhoto Libraries by years the photos were taken: 1920-1978; 1979-1985; etc with 2007 being the current one. Within each of these libraries, I have created albums with names like Family Photos 1977. Whenever I import the scanned photos for that year, I immediately drag them from the film roll to the album.
I have a film roll also labeled 1977, but sometimes I import the photos and then discover other photos from that same year that get scanned in later. They become film roll 235, but since I want them to be with the 1977 film roll, I drag them into my album first, and then drag them up to the 1977 film roll, where they are joined into it with the earlier-scanned photos.
If ther is a particular occasion that year that I want to find separately, I make another album, titled properly, like Bob's 4th birthday party, and drag the photos from the Family 77 album into that party album. The beauty of the album system is that a photo can be in multiple albums since those photos are aliases. You also can rearrange the order of the photos in the albums; something you cannot do in the fim rolls.
It is a fantastic system once you get used to it.
You don't have to worry about where the photo is, just find it in your album.
You can use the Keyword function to name the photos and when you need to find a particular photo, you can search by keyword.
If you do batch change the dates, you can do a search by dates as well.
