Organizing trouble

Im having some trouble organizing music from cds on my ipod. When i import a cd to the library, and then transfer to the ipod.. everything is fine. Then i look at my ipod and i go to albums.. epecting to see album titles but i see song titles, so i go to artists... expecting to see artist names.. but i see song titles there as well. How can i fix this?

"First, for some albums, it will actually separate the songs of the album into two separate albums of the same exact name"
A spelling or punctuation mistake, or sometimes a trailing space usually causes this after the artists and/or song name, which fools the iPod into thinking that there are two different artists or songs. The trailing space is the hardest to spot.
Best way to cure this is to go into iTunes, highlight that artist and/or songs, right click on them and select "get info".
This brings up the multiple song info window. If you see the "artist" field is left blank, then there is a discrepancy with that name.
So to correct this, in the artist or song box retype the name, as you would like it, and then click ok. You should do this even if no mistakes are immediately visible.
Re sync this new artist/song info to your iPod.
If the above is not the issue, try this also. Highlight all the songs for that artist, right click on them and select "apply sort field/same artist".
That often works.

  • Difference between folder and collection in Lightroom

new to Lightroom  - - in organizing, trouble in figure use and difference between folders (and sub folders) and collections.

Folders (and subfolders) represent actual, real folders on a hard drive. Collections are created only virtually within LR and can hold images from across multiple folders or even hard drives. An extension of Collections are Smart Collections that can be built using various metadata criteria and self populate based on the metadata criteria.
So, two very different things, folders are reality, in a physical place, while collections are a LR feature allowing virtual groupings of images chosen by the user.

  • Having trouble organizing things on my iPod

I bought the iPod Classic 80Gb last week. I am having some trouble getting everything organized. First of all, I'd like to have certain subgroups for my music. As it is now, I can select by artists or albums or genre, but I would like to have a layer above that. Right now I am 'abusing' the Genre entry for that, but there should be a better way... I have created a genre Bruce Cockburn that contains all his albums, and a few more for specific artists. All the rest is in various bigger groups called Various and Classic and Praise. This does work as I want it to, but it's a bit weird having to use Genre for this... Playlists for specific artists and groups won't work because playlists won't contain albums but EVERY song. But it does work: I have Genre on my Main menu now and when I click on it I can choose between various artists and various groups of artists and music. Still, this is not what Genre is meant for...
Another problem are movies. I can't make ANY groups with movies. They all show up in one big list, which becomes quite messy. I also have movies that belong together, like LOTR (3 movies), Beatles Anthology (8 movies) and so on. This COULD be solved at first by using playlists, but it soon became a mess in iTunes: I also have all Laurel and Hardy talkies (41) and several other short movies and they are numbered: within no time I completely lost track of what moves belonged to what 'series' because all number come after each other...
I also 'solved' this by 'abusing' the TV-programmes entry: I turned ALL movies into TV-programs because ONLY then they will show up in 1 group (when you edit the episode numbers).
Next problem was that almost all 'movies' showed up on my iPod in the wrong order (41 - 1 in stead of 1 - 41...) So I ALSO had to make playlists for EVERY movie, even single ones, in order to be able to access them easy on the iPod...
I find this al quite confusing and I am disappointed there isn't an easier way to get things done... Having to use Genre and TV-Programmes for OTHER purposes ia a pity... and a bit weird... So I'd like to know if there is a nicer way to get things done... Why can't I make my own groups or even menu-items? It ***** having to select TV-programmes to get to my movies and to choose a Genre just in order to get Bruce Cockburn...

I wouldn't want to mess about with Genre in the way you have, but I too would like to be able to separate one or two sections of the library from everything else. My idea would run thus.
    *User defined “Sources”*
Create a new playlist option flag called, perhaps, “Exclusive source”. When set this would make the playlist appear within the sources section under the built-in sources such as Music, Movies, Audiobooks etc. Any files in one of these playlists would not appear in any other source. Either regular or smart playlists could be used. This feature could be used, for example, to create separate library sections for Classical Music or Comedy. This would make it less likely that totally incongruous pieces would be thrown up during shuffle play modes as Shuffle would work within a source. Such user-defined sections should also be replicated to the iPod and would inherit the same sub-sections as Music, i.e. Cover Flow, Artist, Album, Genere etc.
I'm with you the use of TV Shows to organise videos. If you make use of the episode ID's you should be able to get them to sort in the correct order, at least under firmware 1.1.1. An earlier version sorted strictly on reverse release date. I've bought some of the Pixar videos from the iTunes store and annoyingly the *Video Kind* flag is locked, but otherwise I've been able to group and order my videos sensibly.

  • I am having trouble with my bookmark bar changing order between my devices. I have them organized for convenience, but when I arrange them on one device they change on the others to a different order. how can I fix this?

I have 2 desktops and a laptops connected by Firefox sync which I set up at some time during the beta. I have several folders, dividers, and bookmarks on the toolbar which I try to keep organized based on their use (web design, hardware/tech support sites, personal, etc) but when I arrange them on one computer it screws them up on the others. I would like for it either to keep them in the same order on all machines, or at least have to arrange them on each machine separately without them affecting the other so they stay where I put them. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

This is what I'd suggest get your machines matched. Sync your machines so all data is on both. Then pick one to get all of your organizing as you want it. (or do this before you even setup sync) Then, when you do your initial sync from that organized machine, select: replace all other devices with this computers data. (you can also do that as Manage Account > reset sync.
After that, changes in order on one machine should be reflected on the other. Remember though Sync '''merges ''' the data from your machines. If you work on two machines side by side and make order changes on both without syncing either, once you do sync, Sync will have to again figure out how to merge the incongruities, which may not be what you expect.. Be careful, if order is important to you.

  • Mail 5: Having Trouble not Organizing by Conversation: Annoying

On Mail 5, we have the option of organizing by conversation or not--apparently. I typically don't want mail organized by conversation. So, I tell Mail not to organize in this way. Pretty quickly Bill Gates apparently has turned organize by conversation back on. How can I keep Bill from doing so?

I have about a jillion mailboxes. I took a quick sample, and I think that all my boxes currently are set not to organize by conversation. What has occurred is that I often find my inbox reset to organize by conversation, and, at that point, I set it not to do so again. Pretty soon, but I don't know quite how soon, I find that it again is reset to organize by conversation. I haven't observed closely enough to see if these Bill-Gates changes are systematic. I don't think they are related to restarting since I do so infrequently. I'll work, actually fiddle around, as I usually do for a while and see if I can see a pattern. I'll get back to you if I see one. And, I'll consider your possible solution.
    Thanks much again.

  • Trouble organizing music

ok, i listen to foreign music, and since the music library of those countries aren't so advanced and organized (missing info, mistyped info), i have to edit the info of all the songs manually to keep them organized. After i store my songs to the ipod, it does 2 weird things. First, for some albums, it will actually separate the songs of the album into two separate albums of the same exact name (This happens only on the ipod). I don't know how to fix this. Second, it will place some tracks in random order. For example, for one of the albums, it places track 12 before track 1 and this happens in both itunes and the ipod. I am a super music organizer freak and this is bothering me beyond anything. HELP!

  • Trouble with sync once photos are all organized into folders on iphoto. Help!

I have imported and organized all of my pictures of off my iphone into iphoto. I then went to sync like I always do, only requesting that 2 folders (approx 900 photos) be put back on my phone. When the sync finished, it said that itunes couldnt sync 250 of the photos I asked it to. That's 1 issue. It said that itunes would tell my why it couldn't, then it didn't!
Problem #2 is this...my 2 folders of 900 photos shows up on my phone in the folders, but then all 900 photos are also in photo library. How do I keep these from showing up twice? It's taking up all of my memory with every photo being saved to my phone twice.
I've tried to find tutorials & help with Iphone & haven't had much luck. I've imported, foldered, synced, and gone about my business plenty of times before. Now i'm running out of memory & my phone is telling me it can't completely sync.

Is there an Albums section in the left hand pane?  If so move the cursor to the right of the Album name till Show appears and click on it?
If there is no left hand pane where the Event and Photos icons, albums, slideshows, etc. usually sit move the cursor over the  left edge of the window until it turns into a a cross like this:
then click and drag to the right to open the pane.
If you can't get that to work Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto, reset its various preferences and try again. The left hand pane will be visible.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Trouble with Files organizing into Folders.

I am really frustrated with Itunes today. I am trying to reorganize my library from scratch. All of my music is saved to an external Hard Drive, from which I will be pulling music from and adding it back into my Itunes library. My problem is that I can't stand it when Itunes organizes my music into folders.
Artists > Albums > Songs. I dont want this. I just want all of my tracks to be in one folder, organized by name. Now I when I go to preferences and under te advanced tab, the "Keep Itunes Media Folder Organized" box is UNCHECKED. And it is still organizing my songs into folders when I add my music to itunes.
I am pulling my hair with frustration on this one and I dont know what to do... PLEASE HELP!

I'm suddenly having this problem also. "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" have NEVER been checked.
On March 2, 2012, iTunes updated and now all the songs that were in my Singles folder were renamed and moved into individual Artist folders that never previously existed. I now have 1000s of Artist folders with a single song in each. I also now have 1000s of exclamation marks in front of the songs in my library because iTunes can't find the songs it moved!
I've spent several days reversing what iTunes has done and I'm still not finished. I'm also concerned about the next iTunes update destroying my days and days of work by moving my music again.
How do I prevent iTunes from renaming/moving my music files when I'm not allowing the program to do that in the first place?

  • Trouble organizing files on Zen MicroPh

    <FONT face=Century>
<FONT face=Century>I was trying to re-organize folders on my MicroPhoto and have had some problems. I organized everything the way I wanted it on my PC, then chose Organize Media using MicroPhoto Media Explorer. I followed all the steps, but when I check on my Zen, the file structure is still the same. (For example, I was trying to combine several artists that I only have one song of into a folder called "Various Artists")
    <FONT face=Century>
<FONT face=Century>When that didn't work, I tried using the Creative Media Organizer AND just plain 'ol Windows Explorer but they didn't work either.
    <FONT face=Century>
<FONT face=Century>Can anyone help me? I'm definitely doing something wrong. Help!
    <FONT face=Century>

I have the exact same issue. After ordering my Zen via Amazon, I got a head start on organizing my CD collection my ripping them onto my computer, in an organized folder system, starting with genre, then artist, and then album (if needed). I also had a 'various hits' folder for artists I only had or 2 songs for.
I've tried to synch the files using both Windows Media Player and also Zen Sleek Media Player, but both times my Zen has re-organized the songs in their own system.
I'm hoping there is a simple solution, if not, it will be a very frustating Zen experience to play specific songs with 800 + tracks and growing.

  • Trouble with the organs

OK so I'm a guitar player not a keyboardist. I know nothing about midi. I've been using Mainstage with an Oxygen 49 keyboard for a little while now and I can get everything I want out of it, except the organs using the EVB3 tonewheel don't work. It'll show that keys are being pressed on screen, but there's no sound. If I use the mouse to click a key, it works fine. I've checked on the forum and this seems to be a somewhat common noob issue. Apparently I'm on the wrong midi channel? Someone said the organ only works on midi channels 1-3 and you could go into the EVB3 controls and change it, but I went in there and it looks to me like I'm on channel 1 already so I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in the EBV3 controls click the little round thing under the volume knob (in the middle) and click split for a keyboard mode:

  • Trouble organizing photos when they download in iphoto

I want to control the picture organization when I download from my camera so that different events don't group into one topic. and now I have tons of photos that are not easy to group. i feel like every time I move them I wind up with a duplicate copy. my hard drive is bursting.

I am not sure how to rename the actual pictures and sort them they way I want them sorted.
You can add Titles to Pics using the Info Pane (Click on the ‘i’ lower left. The Name, Date and Description fields can be edited). To change the title of groups of pics use the Photos -> Batch Change command.
So, how do you want them sorted?
The most basic way is to create an Album (File -> New Album) and drag the pics to it. You can put Albums into Folders (File -> New Folder). So, you can have a Folder called, say, ‘Travel’ and within it Albums for your Trip to Paris and your Trip to Rome.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
but iphoto does not allow me to be selective on what photos come in. its all or none and all named to the same description.
When iPhoto sees a card it shows you the contents of the card. Select the pics you want to import (Click on them, Command-click for multiple) add your description and Click on Import Selected.

  • Trouble organizing pictures on my mac

    Hi there,
I have iPhoto and use it quite a bit however I've noticed that I seem to have duplicates all over the place now. What I mean is I upload pictures, they go directly into IPhoto...then someone sends me pictures and i save them in a folder under 'pictures'. The problem now is that I've got pics in iPhoto, modified pics in the library and originals...and then i have other pics stored elsewhere.
I think that maybe I was using iPhoto incorrectly in the first place...When i upload new digital pics, I prefer to edit using another software so can someone explain to me the best way to use iPhoto and store my pictures without having a million duplicates all over my Mac.
    THanks

    storm31
When you import pics to iPhoto the are (by default) copied to the iPhoto Library. This means that the pics that you have saved also in the Pictures folder (but NOT in the iPhoto Library) are duplicates and unnecessary.
Here's the absolute best advice I can give you about the iPhoto Library: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
Here's how the Library is laid out: In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
ALL of these are necessary for the proper running of iPhoto.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.

  • Trouble with organizing VIs to be used in multiple applications? Is there a best practice?

Question...basically, about best practice.     I have made a VI that I use very often in
    many different applications.  (a special
path stripping thing for help with executable stuff)    Right now, I have used it in so many
places always making a copy of it if I use it somewhere else because when I
deploy my code on a CD, I can't always be looking all around for all the VIs and where they are
stored, but the other hand is that I have so many copies of it, and if I make a
change, I have to replace them all, and when they are in different
versions...its' really tough...is there a better way than this?
In summary, say I kept one copy of each VI that I made as the master copy used in various places, when I go to deploy the VIs, is there a way that I can 'gather' all the appropriate VIs so that there are none missing when I deploy the code?  Help would be appriciated...
    James

I have a "Utility" folder where I keep all my often-used in different applications vi's.  I always add these vi's directly to the block diagram directly (using the "Select a vi" button on the block diagram funtions palette.  That way, those utility vi's are automatically included in the build.  Of course, if such a vi is changed, that change will be included in any application that is subsequently "rebuilt".  That's very good.  Means your updates are automatic.

Suggest you post a new topic in this forum on your question about deleting Photostream pictures off your phone. I  I don't use Photostream and don't know the answer to your question (although I do know that for the time being, you can't delete individual pictures from PhotoStream, and the pictures will stay there for 30 days unless you reset it).
As far as photos taken on your phone appearing in a different orientation than when taken, this is a widely discussed issue that may be addressed in a future update.  The exif data isn't always readible by the application used to view the picture, sometimes resulting in a different orientation.  Not sure why you're getting the "issue with photo" error.  That shouldn't be happening.
