Organizing with PSE9 Organizer

Hi All,
Does anybody know how to sort/organize photos by date (I want chronological order instead of most recent first) or by file type (I want to sort JPEG from RAW).
Gimme back my Bridge.
Many thanks in advance!!

If you liked Bridge, then you need a mental shift to use Organizer, because Organizer is NOT a file browser. Do not think it is a file browser, or that you can use it as a file browser, because with those thoughts, Organizer is useless. If you insist on using Organizer like you used Bridge, as simply another way to view files and folders, then you are heading down the wrong path.
Organizer is a database, it offers you superior tools to file names and folder names/locations; specifically I am referring to tags, captions and notes. If you use those tools, Organizer will allow you to find photos quickly and operate smoothly.

  • PSE8 Organizer with PSE9 Editor

I'm trying to use the PSE8 Organizer with the  PSE9 Editor (don't like what they did to folder view in PSE9 Organizer).   I've tried to do it two ways: by setting the PSE9 Editor as a  supplemental editor and by replacing all the files in the Photoshop  Elements 8.0 directory with the files from the Photoshop Elements 9  directory.
The supplemental editor method results in:
a new  version of the file being opened is created in      the organizer each  time and that file is what is pulled into the editor (it's named  _edited_# and added to a version set of the original each time)
can only get into edit from the edit menu  (ie,      supplemental editor doesn't appear in right click drop down) -  can learn      to live with this if item 1 can be corrected.
Files don't get locked in the Organizer when they get      opened - can learn to live with this, too
Replacing the files in the directory results in
The  PSE9 editor opens when selecting "Edit with      Photoshop Elements"  from right click drop down (or from Edit menu) but it doesn't bring a       file into the editor.
If I use the open command from the editor, it brings      the file in but doesn't lock it
Same problem with not recognizing the Organizer as      above.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Note: I poked around in the registry a little but nothing jumped out at  me immediately (adding the key for "CurrentCatalogPath" in the 9.0  section of Elements Organizer under the CURRENT_USER software key  stopped the message that the organizer wasn't being used but still did  not allow me the options to save changes in the Elements Organizer or  add to version set)

I agree with your view point about PSE 8 Organizer. I also like it better for the same reason.. My work around is having 2 monitors. I keep PSE8 organizer on the left and PSE9 Editor on the right. Then I drag across. My catalog paths and settings in Both organizers is the same. Edited items from PSE9 will show up in 8....make sure your "watched folders" settings are set and the same in both organizers. Its a bit clunky...but it works for me...but I'm just a new guy to PSE.

  • PSE9 Organizer with Win7 - Really That Bad???

I've just ordered PSE9 hoping to upgrade from 7. However, after reading the nightmare threads on this forum about the organizer (my primary purpose) I want to write "return to sender" on the package and not even open it! Is anyone having a GOOD experience with the organizer and Win7? I'm hoping I just hit a sour patch of experiences. However, I went to look at the reviews and even someone giving it 5 stars said.... a lot of features stop working after the first use, but I don't care..... Nice.
Should I just send it back and wait for 10 or switch to something else? Thanks for your opinions.
    ECabber

First a caveat:  "I know virtually nothing about everything"  !!!
I am not (what I would call) a sophisticated user of PSE9. I have a long way to go....
    For what it's worth....
I was running PSE6 under Windows XP on an older Dell Inspiron laptop w/ only 40gb drive and an external WD 500 gb passport essential.
I am replacing that with a  Dell 17R laptop w/650 gb drive running Windows 7.
I first inquired (via chat) about the converstion process, and was initially advised, the convertion with all metadata could not be done. With thousands of file containing keywords, ratings and captions, my response was "you gotta be kidding"...
I started the switch around Jan 5th.  I then really commited to using the Organizer.  (I had been utilizing only the editor).
Long story short: "ultimately" with the assistance of Adobe tech support, a "full PSE backup" from old system, and a "PSE restore" to new system, it seemed OK. but the "folder view" seemed to go flakey with out-of-sequence files within a folder.  Support connected to "both" of my systems such that they could view (and discuss) what I had been describing.  While support was arriving at a technical solution, I re-built my catalogues and re-entered metadata manually.
Support came back with a solution in a few days, but in the meantime, I was running the organizer on my new system with NO apparent issues, and from what I can tell the organizer is solid in all respects.
Now  in my conversations with tech support, they DID indicate that the migration under my circumstance had technical  problems. And I would assume that some technical issues have been worked on or resolved.    But as of now, I have moved passed that.

  • Is PSE9 Organizer compatable with PSE6 Bridge?

I've just bought PSE9 to update my PSE6. When I install PSE9, will the files in PSE6 Bridge transfer to PSE9 Organizer or will I lose them?
    Thank you, Steve

No files are "in" Bridge. Bridge is just a file browser: it shows you the current state of any folder you point it at. If you mean will you lose your metadata keywords, no those are written into the files themselves, so no worries there. You will lose any stacks, though. You can continue to use PSE 6 bridge with PSE 9 if you don't like organizer, also. You just won't have a button in PSE itself for launching it.
If you want to remove PSE 6, it's maybe best to do that first before installing PSE 9, since the way the installer for PSE 6 is written, it removes some shared files, so if you decide to remove it later, you'll need to reinstall PSE 9 afterwards (this won't affect your photos in any way, though).

  • Black images in PSE9 organizer?

I recently scanned some old B&W prints to TIFF files but they only show as black images in PSE9 organizer although they appear normally in the editor. Files that don't appear are all less than 1Mb file size. Any suggestions about how to have these images appear properly in the organizer would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Here are the release notes for PSE9:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86152.html#main_Photoshop Elements Organizer notes
    Specifically, this section (emphasis added):
    Organizer thumbnails:
If an image has been rotated in an application other than Photoshop Elements 9, update the thumbnail before printing or using the image in a creation to ensure that the images appear properly rotated. To update the thumbnail, select the image(s) and choose Update Thumbnail or Update Thumbnail for Selected Items in the Edit menu.
Some TIFF files and files that use uncommon color profiles may appear black or as generic thumbnails in the Organizer. To fix this, select the file, and choose File Export As New File(s). This will save the file with the supported set of file tags required by the Organizer to show the thumbnails.
Very large files appear with generic thumbnails. For example, panoramas created with Photomerge Panorama return multiple layers, which, when saved, creates very large files. To make thumbnails visible in the Organizer, consider saving panorama files as flattened JPEG images
Files that are not supported in the Organizer look like broken thumbnail icons. You can import these files by saving an album containing a file in an unsupported format, using the Photoshop Elements Editor, or importing files not supported by the Organizer, using Premiere Elements.

  • PSE9 Organizer is very slow

The organizer is very slow and take over a minute just to page from one screen to another.  I took off facial recognition but that only helped minimally.  Is this an improvement?  Previously used PSE 6 which worked fine.
This is test of the trail version on a Vista SP2 Intel 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of memory

After a couple of days of testing I've decided to pass on PSE9 :-
Don't like the Organiser color - the light grey is far to light and don't like the grid around the photos
The font for filename, tag name etc is far too small
The organiser performance is slower than PSE7 - doesn't render photos instantly like PSE7, things like adding tags and anything done on multiple items seems to be slower in PSE9 than PSE7.
Yes the new features are OK - but I cannot work with PSE9 so I'm passing on it.

  • QtNetwork4.dll missing so PSE9 Organizer won't start

I downloaded a trial copy of Photoshop CS5, which worked fine. However, I decided I was happy with PSE. Unfortunately, when I tried to open PSE 9's Organizer I got the message "Program can't start because QtNetwork4.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." First thing I did was uninstall CS5, but the missing message still appears when I try to open the Organizer. I'm not real keen on uninstalling and reinstalling PSE 9, but I'll do it if necessary. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can replace QtNework4.dii without a reinstall? Many thanks.

I don't know if anyone cares (and why would one if one is not experiencing the same problem?), but what I did to solve the problem was go to a friend who also has PSE 9 on his computer and copy the QtNetwork4.dll file, which is buried in C://Program://Adobe://PSE9 Organizer. I then installed the file on my computer in the same place and Organizer opened again. Et voila!

  • Multiple Libraries: DON'T MESS WITH MY ORGANIZATION!

Many music/audio fans are obsessive about how they organize their collections (see the movie/book "High Fidelity"), and I am one of them. I've spent HOURS organizing my iTunes Library, and I'm very protective about my genres.
About 50% of my iPod use is listening to audio books from Audible.com. I've always kept these books in a genre called Spoken Word, along with other spoken files (podcasts, etc.)
Low and behold, I install iTunes 7, and my Audible files are gone. I try to re-import them, and noting happens. I spend a couple of hours searching around online but turn up no info.
Finally, I notice that iTunes 7 has created a new Library called "Audiobooks" and moved all my Audible titles into it.
Well, I'm relieved that they aren't gone, but I'm still really ****** off. I don't want two Libraries. I want my titles to be organized the way I organized them. Why is Apple pushing their organization on me?
And, as-far-as I can tell, there's no way of changing this. If iTunes is going to create multiple Libraries, I should be able to drag titles from one to the other. Or I should be able to right-click a title, choose Info, and be able to switch Libraries, just as I can switch genres.
Now some of my spoken content (Audible) is in one Library and some (non-audible) is in another. I HATE that.
Worse, there no way (unless I'm missing something) to search all Libraries. For instance, I listen to "The Ricky Gervais Show." Some I downloaded from Audible and some I got from elsewhere. If I search for Gervais, I only get the items in the currently-selected Library.
This makes me really scared to install future updates. I don't want iTunes to mess with my organization any more. I have thousands of files, and I want to be able to fine them easily.
DON'T MESS WITH MY LIBRARY, APPLE!

Yes, that's what is showing as "modified time" by windows explorer.
In a sense, it is indeed operating system dependent because everytime you write in a file (.doc, .exe, .whatever and in our case .jpeg), the modified date will change in windows.
    Yes, But.
In other applications, such as Irfanview, you can tick "apply original exif time/date" and as a result, even though you have indeed changed the file, windows explorer will still show the original date, meaning when the file was taken.
I am looking for a similar option in Lightroom or a trick to get that result.

  • PSE9 organizer wont start

My PSE9 organizer wont start. When I select organizer from the welcome screen it immediately goes back to the desktop.
I'm running Vista Home premium SP2. The product was working OK until about a week ago but now wont open.
I have renamed the PSA file and the Status.dat file but no help
I have tried to get to catalog manager by CTRL-Shift on selecting organizer from the welcome screen but it just goes back to the desktop.
The Editor appears to work but I can't access Organizer from there either--nothing happens.
    Any ideas for me???
    Thanks

When I go to C>program files>Adobe>photoshop elements 9.0 I can find an .exe file for editor but not for organizer
    where would it be located?
When I hit Ctrl-Alt-del and then click organizer from the welcome screen it just goes back to my desktop
anything else to try--I'm getting a bit frustrated
edit--I did find the organizer.exe file and made a shortcut on the desktop. The program still wont open with that either

  • Time stamp in PSE9 organizer messed up?

    Hi,
I am presently using PSE8 which I like a lot, but am also trying out PSE9 Trial. I have found some anomalies when it comes to the time stamp in PSE 9 Trial.
I know I have a 1 h difference between my camera, Canon 40D, and my computer due to inaccurate daylight savings time in my camera. Normally I shoot in RAW+JPEG mostly except for the sports program when only JPEG is used. I use Win 7 x64 Ultimate.
In organizer the timestamp for Date Time Original and Date Time Digitized are correct for the RAW-files, but when it comes to JPEG I have a mix of correct and 1 h changed time stamps. How can this be?
I have double checked in ACDSee and in Windows Photo Gallery and there the time stamps are correct. Maybe there is an explanation for this behavior, but until then it seems like a bug to me. My plan was to buy PE 9, but this makes me hesitant.
I would appreciate an explanation or a confirmation that this is a bug.

    Hi,
Thank you for your response. I agree with your conclusion. I looked into the changes a little bit more after your mail and found that .jpg files that had not been altered i.e rotated prior importing to PSE 9 did not change. I rotate my .jpg pictures "lossless" in acdsee.
I have used PSE8 with the same procedure, but there everything works fine.
I enclose a few samples, if I can send the raw-files, Canon .cr2, due to size. Views from picture sorting in PSE9/ACDsee/Windows Live Photo Gallary are also enlosed.
    Best regards,
    TK

Subject: Time stamp in PSE9 organizer messed up?
    Hi,
Organizer handles the daylight savings time and hence it would make corrections automatically. So if a file is present in the catalog that has date stamp which falls under the day light savings period, then Organizer make the corrections automatically. So the 1 hour gap may be happening because of the same reason.
Though the problem which appears to me is that the same should happen for raw files as well.
It would be good if you could give some more information any set of files X.jpg and its corresponding raw file , say X.nef. Please share the date time stamps of both raw and jpegs for the same images files (Date Time Original and Date Time Digitized).
Also share your timezone information and if you have taken any of those pictures from a different timezone.

  • Pse9 organizer tag filter error

When I filter for a given tag (a person's name in the case in question) the Organiser throws up masses of images which do not carry the tag I am using for my search/filter. I've looked at the filenames and metadata of the erroneous 'hits' but cannot find anything which would explain these mis-hits apart from the fact that they are photos taken around the same time. I've fiddled with the 'Options/Hide best match' criteria without success.
How can I force the PSE9 organizer to simply show me the photos tagged with the tag I check ?

    Hi Ken,
Will look around and report back. I may start a new thread, e.g. "Alternatives to PSE Organizer" and see whether it whacks anything out of the woodwork. There are numerous threads on this subject but they are all outdated.
Basically I need an organizer which
meshes well with PSE, can thumbnail .PSD files, etc.
    uses a robust database
allows me to store tags, dates, etc in the file metadata as well as in the database (so that the info "travels with" the file if I send it anywhere and is there as a backup if the database becomes corrupted)
    is user-friendly
has good support (I used to use Thumbs Plus but Cerious seems to have relegated its support to the YOYO (You're On Your Own, bud !) category.
doesn't slow down the computer too much with background housekeeping, trawling of folders, etc
doesn't arm-twist me to upgrade every few months ("Upgrade for only $49 !...........Support for legacy versions will be terminated as of 30-Apr-2012....")
is stand-alone on my own computers and doesn't share my images or metadata with the "cloud" or social websites or any other phagocytic or predatory  elements in cyberspace
Windows Live Photo Viewer is (for me) difficult to navigate. Right now I'm looking at ACDSee 14 (www.acdsee.com).
Watch this space, as they say !
    Paddy
A quick P.S. to this. I've been trying out ACDSee 14 today (downloaded the trial version). So far so good. Interface takes a bit of getting used to but that's because it is not dumbed down and allows one to fine-tune searches etc. Editing of metatags is very limited (one has to buy the Pro version for that and the Pro version is $200+) but that's not a problem because Microsoft's free Pro Photo Tools has excellent batch metatagging facilities, including IPTC. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know at this stage that
ACDSee 14 stores thumbnails and database information for images contained on CDs or other removable media as Photo Discs. You can then browse the thumbnails and view the information for those images even when the disc is not in your CD-ROM drive and
ACDSee 14 interfaces with PSE9 in that one can simply drag a thumbnail from ACDSee into PSE and edit the file.

  • PSE9 Organizer has changed completely...need help

I have used PSE9 Organizer for some time....when I opened it tonight there is nothing on the right side, but on the left side is a column with list of all the folders in my Picture Library.  Tags and albums are all gone.  What could have happened?

Thank you…. I found the Organize Tab, along with Fix, Create and Share…and Organize is selected. I could not find any other  tab you mention, but I did find a button, “Display”, and when I changed that to Thumbnail View, all the images come back…but no Tags, Albums or anything on the right side.  The Left Side column disappeared.  So I still don’t have my tags.
My Organizer is a bit of a mess, pictures that I really don’t want in it….I just installed PSE11 and have not done anything with the Organizer in that…just looking at all the changes in the whole program.   Is it best to import the catalog from PSE9 into PSE11, or should I start over and just import those images I want into the Organizer….I want to be able to “Tag” the pictures….I had done hundreds and hundreds in PSE9….I am really at a loss to know what to do since the Tags have disappeared.  Thank you for your help…sure hope I can somehow find the Tags I have done.  I am a “senior dummie” and just learning this wonderful program. Thanks again.

    Hi,
I would first try to repair and optimize your catalog.
From the File menu, select Catalog - that should open the Catalog Manager.
Select you current catalog and click on the Repair button
When that has finished, click on the Optimize button
When that is done, click on Cancel to close the Catalog Manager.
Try doing some work to see if that has cured the crashing.
