OS Uptdates - The proper sequence of installation & Software

Hello Hello
I just did a new fresh install of OS 10.4.4, from my older Black Disc Full Retail OSX, (to a New Hard Drive), and then I downloaded the Apple Updates to bring the OS up to version 10.4.9
I then re-installed iLife 06; iMovie,iDVD,iPhoto, etc., and all went well. Although I haven't actually got back into using iMovie and the other programs - all looks good.
That being said, I'm about to perform the same tasks on my freind's G5, (same identical equipment and new hard drive).
Now just to make absolutely sure, do you guys know if it matters whether we do the OS updates FIRST. Or stick with OS 10.4.4 (intially), then re-install iLife (iMovie etc), THEN after the iLife install, THEN update the OS to 10.4.9?????
Of course the iLife updates will follow as well
Thank you all
Mike

I just did a new fresh install of OS 10.4.4, from my older Black Disc Full Retail OSX, (to a New Hard Drive), and then I downloaded the Apple Updates to bring the OS up to version 10.4.9
Just so you know, when it is a new hard drive it is called "Install Mac OS X for the first time." There is no "fresh install" option.
When installing on the friend's G5, you need to find out if the G5 came out before or after 10.4's as this article explains:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If after, you should use the disks which came with the G5. If before, you need a separate license to install Tiger from retail disks, unless your friend is part of your family and you purchased a family pack.
Once you determine what you can use to install, be sure to follow the tips my FAQ* for upgrading:

  • Installing "Applications" during the task sequence and installation enforcement

    Hello,
Kind of a weird question here, so it seems like I'm seeing that if you install an application on a system during its OSD task sequence, then you later manually uninstall that application, that SCCM considers that system now out of compliance?
And then reinstalls the application as indicated in AppEnforce.log?  Is this true?  If so, how do you get around this behavior?  I guess I thought that this application compliance only took effect when you actually deploy an application to a
system, through an actual deployment.  I didn't realize that it would enforce compliance even if an application was installed during a task sequence.  So if you have hundreds of systems that were imaged with the same task sequence and you have
a small handful of machines that can't have application X on it (so you want to uninstall it), which was installed via the task sequence, how do you disable this compliance enforcement and disable its automatic reinstall?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sorry for the delayed response, thank you both for your input.  To answer both your questions, no these workstations do not have any required deployments for this application directed at them.  I have confirmed that, however, they do have
the OSD task sequence deployment (that contains this application) constantly "available" to them (via only "media and PXE") as this makes it very easy for our technicians to reimage any machine whenever they need to (love that feature
    by the way).
I can only assume that because they still have this task sequence deployment pointed at them is why they continue to attempt to reinstall this application when ConfigMgr finds that it's not installed anymore.  In fact it does it at the same day/time
each week, which I believe is the same day/time of the week that the machines were imaged.  I must have the compliance part of the clients configuration to check every 7 days for stuff like this?  Anyway, that's my conclusion for now.
Since even Wally Mead felt that this must be an actual required deployment outside of the task sequence I'm really curious to see if anyone else sees this behavior.  It would be fairly simple to attempt to recreate, image a machine with a task sequence
that has "application" installs included, where the deployment for it is just "available" and keep the deployment "available" after the machine is reimaged.  Then after that, uninstall one of the apps that was installed
during the task sequence via an "application" and then see if it reinstalls automatically, it may wait a while (may 7 days by default?).  You can see the evidence of our application reinstalling itself in the "AppEnforce.log".
Is it even remotely possible that this is a new "feature" or behavior of ConfigMgr 2012 and "Applications"?

  • Pause Task Sequence, Manually Installs Software

I'm not sure what I need to do but I have a build and capture (SCCM not MDT) task sequence and I would like to pause it and manually install software, no I can't automate it unfortunately and I'm not wanting to use MDT.  Now I know how to pause
a task sequence but I never get to a point where I'm logged in to the OS as a user thus I can't install software.  I have added a reboot command in to the TS and told it to reboot in to the installed OS but that did not work. I 'thought' I configured
the unattend.xml to login to the OS but maybe I screwed that up.
How do i get to a point that I am logged in to the OS and before we need to sysprep....?

I would go down the MDT route.
You are going to save yourself a look of trouble, as this solution already exists.
    http://deploymentbunny.com/2011/05/10/ltipause-vbs-take-a-break-in-deployment/
It doesn't take long to setup a Build and Capture with MDT using a hyper-v machine and then import the WIM into ConfigMgr.
The Build and Capture process in ConfigMgr is desiged to be a zero touch process, which makes what you want to achieve difficult.  My understanding is that even if you do get the T.S to pause and get to the desktop, you will then have issue due to the
custom GINA that ConfigMgr uses to prevent GPO and other stuff getting in the way of builds. The second reason is that you will running as the system account and not as a user per se.  Not sure if this will cause any issues, but why take the chance.
If you really don't want to go with MDT... you will have to work out a way to automate your software.  I agree with Torsten, what is stopping it done being automated?
    Regards, Martin
Because until an AI is integrated with ConfigMgr the software that I need to install can't be automated.  It
requires a phone call to the manufacture with a live human to activate the license.  Stupid I know but this is not something that I can change.

  • Choosing the proper sequence setting??

Working on a small project with a lot of varied media (including PDF's) -
what is the best "Easy Setup" preset or "Sequence Preset" so that the

#50 - Quality difference between Viewer and Canvas
Shane's Stock Answer #50 - Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?
Well... the viewer is just that-- a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.
For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720x480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot.  DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.
Same with picture files.  HIgh res pics now adopt the sequence settings and will render to those specs, and most likely they are not as high quality.

  • What's the proper order of installation/uninstallation for upgrading Elements 12 to 13

I'm upgrading to PE 13 specifically because it's been made Retina-capable.  Otherwise, I'd wait 3 versions between upgrades.  I'm in the peculiar position of having to upgrade PE 12 on a Mac that's just had it's apps and data/documents moved from another Mac on which PE 12 was originally installed.
In the past, especially when migrating from one computer to another, I've ended up with files and photos that need to be "reconnected" all the time, presumably because the catalog is using the file paths from the old computer when the path to those photos in the restored catalog on the new computer is different at some point.  With my last migration from one Mac to another, the catalog opened just fine.  I could see all my photos, but just about all of them from the last 12 years needed to be reconnected before I could backup the catalog.  It was impossible, so I went back to the prior computer to make the backup I'll use for PE 13. I'd really like to avoid everything being "disconnected" this time.
My question is how to upgrade.  I made a backup of the PE 12 catalog, and I'll open that in PS 13.  But should I UNinstall PE12 before I install PE 13 or after I install PE13?
Should I direct PE 13 to place its catalog in the same folder that PE12 used or a different one?  If the same, should I delete that catalog folder and its contents to allow PE 13 to make its own catalog folder?
When the program is restoring from the PE 12 backup and asks if I want to maintain the same directory structure as the catalog had, what's the best option???
I think that anyone using PE for several years will have had to migrate from one computer to another a few times, so my problems probably aren't unique.  I'd sure appreciate tips on how to do it better.

OK, no further help needed, but I do have questions.  I still have no idea why I couldn't restore from a backup of a PE 12 catalog, but I could not.  I found that those backups did not contain a file named PSE12cat.db, but I still don't understand what was going wrong.
FINALLY, from the unconverted PE 12 catalog that was already on my new computer, but NOT in the location I wanted to use, I happened on a subfolder that did contain a .db file.  It did successfully convert then, and I'm back in business with my Retina-enabled (yay!!) PE 13.
I'm sure that that conversion was difficult because of extraneous folders that resulted from so many upgrades and computer migrations over the years.  That's why I wanted to start fresh and let PE 13 create its own folder structure which would be rational from here on.  I just couldn't find a way to do that, but perhaps this current Catalog actually is unencumbered by bad path names for the individual files because it did create a successful backup, albeit it very, very slowly compared to the rate at which PE 12 and prior versions created backup.  But this backup, also, contains no .db file.
1 -- Why wouldn't PE 13 convert the Catalog backups from PE 12
2 -- Why would PE 13 claim that backups were "not valid" when PE 12 validated the Catalogs and reported successful completion of its Catalog backup?

  • What is the correct sequence preset to choose?

Now a days I shoot AVCHD but I have video from years past that is from several different
Video cameras, on my hard drive, just waiting until I get around to editing it. How do I
determine which of those many presets that are available to choose from, that are offered when you
start a new project, is the right one?
I seem to remember someone telling me once that if you just hit the "OK" button without selecting anything, the software will assign the
correct preset to the project. I don't know if that is correct or not.

    Steven L. Gotz wrote:
Actually, the preset no longer really matters much.
No matter what the preset, if you import 1920X1080 video and drop it on the "New" button, it will create the proper sequence for your video.
Yes, but it's called the "New Item" button.
You could also right click on a clip and "Create New Sequence From Clip"
You could also select the clip and choose File > New > New Sequence From Clip
You could also create any sequence, and edit the clip to that sequence and conform the sequence to the clip settings in the dialog box, as shown.
There's always a number of ways to get from A to B in Premiere Pro.

  • I would like to burn an i-photo album with subtitles to a CD with the photos in the same sequence as they appear in the album and to have the CD work the same on a PC as on the MAC.

I have created several i-photo albums with subtitles and proceeded to burn them to a CD. The CD burned with the correct subtitles, however, the photos did not appear in the same sequence.  I tried another method and the photos appeared in the proper sequence, however, my subtitles did not appear as in the albums. Is there a method that I can burn an album to a CD with the photos in the same sequence and with the same subtitles as in the album?
I would also like this CD to work the same on a PC as it does on a MAC.

sorry but files on a CD have no order - filles are simply bits on the disk - the file viewer used to view them determines the order of viewing - for example using the finder on the Mac you can view files in Alpha order, date created order, date modified order, file size  order, etc, etc, etc
If you expor tthe files to a desktop folder using the sequetial option then the finder (and probably Windows explorer) would display them in the order you want IF the user views them in alpha order
Bottom line is that you have no control over how the end user views files - that they make

  • Changing activity id in proper sequence for entier project (or certain WBS

    Hi,
Presently I am working on a schedule with more then 3000 activities. I need to delete a WBS with 200 activities and then paste another WBS with 200+ activities. The problem for me is that I need to change the activity ID so that the WBS should be align with the entier project. Is there any better way other then manually editing the Activity Id for entier project? I need to change the Activity Id so that it should reflect the proper sequence with the start date. Any help will be apreciated.
    Thank you

    2. you can also use a global change to change all activity id's. (no if line needed), by concatenating any 2 or more existing text columns or udf's you create for this purpose.
    e.g. create 2 text udf's named "Sort" and "Sort_txt".
under edit/ user prefs / dates, uncheck month name and use MM-DD-YY format so that 30-Oct-09 displays as "10-30-09"
in the "then" field of the global change add the following lines:
sort_txt = Start Date (you need this to convert a date field to text)
sort = leftstring(sort_txt,5) (to extract the first 5 characters of sort_txt as defined in the previous step, that is "10-30"
    sort = sort & '-' (to get "10-30-")
sort = sort & WBS Code (to concatenate "10-30-" with WBS Code or any other field for that matter)
you can always use "Start Date" or the newly created "Sort" to sort your activities. I wouldn't mess with Activity ID too much if I were you, but if you must..
keep Activity ID as simple as possible as a project default option (0001, 0002, 000x...) and add a final line in the global change:
Activity ID = Sort & Activity ID (that is because you need a unique Activity ID). you should get something like 10-30-AAA-0001.
it is safer not to play with Activity ID too much in global changes. that's why i use as many udf's i need for intermediary steps and change Activity ID in just one final line.
OR if you feel more comfortable to work with the udf in excel,
export "Sort" as a column in xls
populate it in excel with 0001 to xxxx with the activities sorted by Start Date (as explained earlier)
    reimport the project
run a simple global change such as:
    Activity ID = Sort
    or
    Activity ID = Sort & <any field you want>
caution: there is no undo for this. practise on a backup copy of the project. don't forget you need a unique Activity ID.
    good luck

I had all my software, including my ‘Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium’ removed from my MacPro (OSX 10.10.2) by a Computer technician after I had inadvertently installed some malware.
Now I can’t reinstall my CS4 because the installer software wants me to identify the product from which I am upgrading, but mine isn’t on the list. The old product from which I am upgrading is called ‘Adobe Design Collection’. Furthermore, it has 4 serial numbers (one each for Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and Illustrator), not just one, as the installer requires.
I know this can be done, as I have had it working for a long time. Am I doing something wrong now?

Contact support be web chat and have them generate a working temporary serial/ challenge code for the install.

I could use some help. Apple support walked me through the uninstall and reinstall of all iTunes and Apple files in the proper order with my security software disabled. I still get the following message:

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.

Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.

My Airport wireless is working for my two MacBook Pros and my daughter's iPod, but our iPad, Iphone and other iPod all say they need to set up an Airport Base Station but do not have the proper software.  I'm not sure what to do to remedy this situation.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

I have iWork 09 with a family license. I am unable to install the software on my new Macbook Pro (the message is simply "Installation failed"). I wonder if I need to remove an old computer from the family license, and if so, how?

Yes, gladly. I am trying to install on a 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.3. I insert the disk into the SuperDrive. The I work '09 window pops up with two icons: one Tim install and one that says "Read before you install iWork." I double-click on the "Install iWork '09" icon, and a window appears that says, "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed." I click "continue" and see "Welcome to the iWork '09 installer." I click on "Continue." The "read me" bullet on the left lights up, and I see "Read before you install. . . ." I click "Continue," then see the software license agreement. When I click on "Continue" again, I am asked to agree, and I do. The window then says, "Standard Install on 'Mackintosh HD" and indicates how much space the program will take.
I click "Install," enter my password, and the installation begins. It goes through a validating phase and begins "writing files." It indicates that installation will take about 30 minutes (although that number fluctuates). After about four minutes it goes to "cleaning up." Then after just a few seconds, the "Summary" bullet on the left lights up and this message appears: "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing again." There is a large yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, and a bold "The installation failed." Below that appears "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
At that point, a "Close" button is pulsating blue at the bottom of the window.
Sorry for the tedious detail. Anything revealing there?
    Thanks!
