OS X 10.4.3 Becomes Confused

I have now had several instances in which OS X 10.4.3 seems to become dysfunctional after it has been up and running for a day or longer. It seems to prevent the correct application from executing. For instance, if you try to activate iTunes or Mail, Finder will activate instead. Sometimes, it is no longer possible to activate an application that is running, but minimized. The only way to correct this situation is to restart.
Has anyone else seen this condition, or know how to fix it?
Thanks -

Hi again, Dudley —
Thanks for your reply. Sorry about the questions and general troubleshooting ideas; I'm hoping to minimize making scattershot suggestions.
Nevertheless, here are a few ideas:
    (a)  If "not initially launching applications... is the problem," this may be a problem with the "Launch Services" API — specifically, potential corruption of your Launch Services database. If it is, rebuilding the Launch Services database may address it. Please refer to this recent thread for an ~easy way to do this.
    (b)  Dr. Smoke's Multiple applications... fail to launch FAQ may have some good suggestions — if it's applicable.
    (c)  Although it's a very specific case, the Apple KnowledgeBase Article Some application windows minimized to the Dock do not restore or update properly might possibly apply.
    (d)  If logging-in to a "test user" account indicates this is a problem that's restricted to your user account, please post back and we'll look in a different direction.
Meanwhile, I'll be thinking over why you "have to have [your] iMac G5 running for 24 hours or longer and have opened and closed lots of applications" to replicate the problem. That's puzzling to me... and vaguely suggestive of a potential hardware-related issue. Could it be related to your Energy Saver preference settings? Have you looked to see whether Activity Monitor or your Console logs provide any hints about what's happening at the specific times when this occurs?
Warm regards,
Dean

  • Is it possible for visa/labview to become confused?

I have an application that uses visa serial comms to read  quartzdyne sensors from a Qlink module. Two sensors are used. Each sensor measures both P and T. After approx 30 mins of operation it was noted/logged that Sensor A’s value reverts to sensor B’s labiew indicator, and sensors B’s values reverts to A’s indicators in labview. Like labview has becomes confused and swapped them over!
It reverted when labview was momentarily unable to read sensors A; the value was displayed in labview as ‘0’. I can live with a momentary loss, however i cant live with the values swapping over like that.
Is this something anyone has came across before?

The delay is not the most reliable way to handle such situations.
Does the messages sent from the devices have some identifier?
Or you could read a specific number of characters, or up until a message seperator.

  • Why does my Acrobat Pro 9 PDF print driver either lock up or become confused as to where it should store a file when printing a document from within the Firefox browser?

I use Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4.5 for creating .pdf files on a Windows XP SP3 platform. Firefox 6.0.2 is my browser of choice. This question only applies to the .pdf printing process. All other printer drivers work fine with this version of Firefox.
In attempt to save paper, I choose to print most documents in an electronic .pdf format using the PDF print driver and save them to my USB drive. Before upgrading my Firefox version to 6.0.2 this process seemed to work fine but after upgrading the .pdf print process seems to be experiencing problems. This particular printing process will cause Firefox to lock up when the distiller tries to print the file to what I believe is a temporary folder under the Adobe folder. When it does this I am sometimes able to force it to complete the process but frequently it will only produce a log not a .pdf file. On other occasions the distiller will just lock up mid print without producing any kind of error message. In both cases I will frequently have to use Windows Task Manager to break out of the process which then shuts down the Firefox browser. I don't seem to have any problems when I use Internet Explorer to perform the same function. As far as I am aware I am running the most current drivers as Adobe automatically pushes down updates to me as they become available. Any ideas how I can overcome this issue or is it inherent to the new version of Firefox?

The PDF file itself does not control the "print as image" preference, which should always be turned OFF unless there's a specific need to rasterize the entire page, and is turned off by default in all Acrobat and Adobe Reader installations.
What's the filetype for the ultralight font and what export setting* are you using in ID? If you're exporting to earlier than PDF1.7, OpenType fonts will be converted and may experience some small changes in shape if their hint definitions aren't done right.
*As a side note, bear in mind that InDesign does not use any part of Acrobat when exporting PDFs, so questions specific to that stage in the process should be posted to the InDesign forums.

  • I currently having problems when dialling with my 4S either from the contacts list, or when using the phone through bluetooth to my in-car system. The phone becomes confused regarding what method / route of connection handsfree, normal use or speaker.

Hi each time i use my 4S phone a dial from the contact list, the phone will not select a communication mode, either normal speaker or handsfree (car), I have to force the phone into speaker mode and the back to normal mode before I can speak to or listen to anyone. The annoying aspect is the recipient of my call can answer but cannot hear me nor I them.
What am I doing wrong, or is there an issue with the phone. The same situation occurs when the phone is used with bluetooth in my car, the previous iphone worked perfectly can you please advise.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!

  • Confused about importing images

I'm new to DreamWeaver but I've used GoLive for many years and still do. In GoLive if I want to import a folder of images so as to have them to work with in my site I just select Import, navigate to the folder and click it and the folder of images is copied to the site and appears in the GoLive window.
There is no way to do this in DreamWeaver that I can see. There is nothing I can find in the Help files or in the Missing Manual about importing images except one confusing entry in the Missing Manual. It says an image can be anywhere on your hard drive, but a couple paragraphs later it says images should be in the root folder of the site. I don't see any way to get them into the root folder other than doing so in the Finder which the documentation cautions against because DreamWeaver will become confused if this is done outside of DreamWeaver's Files window.
This has been absolutely maddening for me and I've spent at least an hour trying to figure out how to simply import images. It shouldn't be this difficult? What am I missing?

    Russ.G wrote:
I believe my original question clearly stated that I wanted to import a _folder_ of images into DW and _not_ bring them in _one at a time_ as I use them. This qestion remains unanswered.
No, you cannot IMPORT the images per se, there is no import function available.
Nadia, first you say to bring files into DW via the Files window and caution against doing it another way. Then in your next reply you say you don't use the Files window and so in fact bring the images in another way via Windows Explorer.
I appreciate you trying to be helpful, but I can't imagine being presented with more contradictory and confusing information.
Can anybody tell me how to import a folder of images into DW?
What I was trying to explain was that there are different ways to 'bring in' the images into the defined Dreamweaver site.
    1.  Copy them from anywhere on your hard-drive  into a specific images folder within the defined site.
    2.  Work with an image that may be saved elsewhere, but save it to a folder within the defined site.
As for the confusion.  regarding working with files, you need to understand why you need to define a site in Dreamweaver first.  DW keeps track of all the links as you build a site, but the files - whether html, text or image files - need to be inside the defined site folder structure.  How you get them in there is completely up to you.  More than one way to skin a cat as they say.
    Define a site:

  • Three different albums with the same name is confusing iPod?

I have three albums which go by the name Greatest Hits. There are three artists on my iPod who both have an album called this. If I am listening to Artist #1 and I switch to Cover Flow, then the album artwork for that album will appear, however the name of Arist #2 or Artist #3 will appear underneath with the song and album title of Artist #1.
Similarly, I searched through the albums to find the Greatest Hits album and it automatically assigned the artwork of Artist #2 to it, but the song by Artist #1 was listed in there along with the songs from Artist #2 and Artist #3.
I hope that all makes sense. I was wondering if this is a bug or simply iTunes/iPod becoming confused and merging the albums together because it thinks it is the same album even though there are different artists.
If this isn't a bug, does anyone know a way I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks.

    1) Select (in iTunes) one album at a time.
    2) Get info on all the songs an make sure the Artist name is the same - and unique from the other two albums.
    3) Change as needed.
    4) Do the same for all albums.
    5) Make sure the artwork is correct for each album.
    6) Sync Touch.

  • 10.5.6 - Network System Preferences confuses Ethernet and Airport

Since upgrading to 10.5.6 I'm having odd behavior from Airport (which is the only network connection I typically use). Symptoms include Airport turning off when the MacBook wakes from sleep, and Airport not automatically connecting to my home network (to which it regularly reconnected prior to 10.5.6).
The strangest symptom, however, is how Ethernet and Airport are mixed-up in the Network preference pane. I can't post a screen shot (hey Apple - why not?!) so I'll describe:
    * In the list of Services on the left side, the service named "Ethernet" has an Airport icon, and the service named "AirPort" has an Ethernet icon.
    * When Airport connects, a green dot appears next to the service named "Ethernet".
    * When I select the service named "Ethernet" (with the AirPort icon) I see options to the right mostly related to AirPort. Thus, it looks like the Network pref pane has become confused about the names of the services... BUT when I rename the services to correct, then restart the computer, the names go back to the mixed-up situation described above.
Any ideas of how to fix?

Or somebody's playing a prank on him.
AirPort does turn itself off when the computer is asleep. It takes a few seconds for AirPort to reconnect. If the WiFi signal is weak or if there are a lot of network noise, AirPort may not reconnect for a long time.

  • I am trying to simulate sequential threads ...

    Hi ,
I am trying to simulate a load testing scenario on our Java Connector Implementation ( JCA) through a test class.I would have loved to use a load testing tool like JMeter but unfortunately JMeter doesn't have built in JCA sampler.
Basically I am trying to simulate multiple sessions and each session would be comprising multiple requests to the Application server . I want to simulate multiple requests belonging to a session as multiple threads that run sequentially one after another and uses a common connection object to simulate calls to the connector.
All is ok. I know it will be a Thread within Thread kind of program... But the point where I am stuck is how do I ensure that all threads that are simulating requests to the app server(ie requests within a sibngle session) run sequntially ? I am seeing that all the threads are starting in parallel which I want to stop. Any code snippet will be highly useful.

    subhrajyoti wrote:
If I am not wrong every requests(within a session) from the broswer to an application server is a separate thread . each of these these threads run sequentially .
I want to simulate the same thing. So I need threads .Each request from (the same or different clients) will cause the creation of a new thread ON THE SERVER.
I think this is where you are becoming confused, you have stated that multi-threading is occurring on the browser/client, it is not (necessarily) the case, the multi-threading is happening on the server.
Also please spell-check your text before posting it.

  • Can This Laptop Be Used For Premier Pro CS6?

Developed an interest in learning to edit video but have become confused in reading all of the posts about what is the true minimum hardware requirement/setup, as compared to what is listed as System Requirements by Adobe.  Probably best to start with my initial goals.
Here is what I was looking at doing as this journey begins:
Purchased Creative Suite 6 Production Premium Classroom in a Book(CIB) after reading a review it would be a better start than Premier Pro CIB, which I plan on getting, if one has no experience in this field.  During research feel that I would like to become a subscriber to the Creative Cloud as there are a number of products I would like to learn and use.  Basically, I am hopeful that I may use my current laptop for the beginning of my education and further down the road look at getting a more powerful system as knowledge/skills/requirements increase.  Initial video I wouild like to work with is that received from family members smart phones and will be looking at purchasing a simple video camera for short interviews and brief presentantions.  Will likely desire uploading some completed projects to the web.
    Current Hardware:
    Laptop:  Asus N53SV
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    CPU: Intel i7-2670QM  2.2GHz Cores=4  Threads=8
    L3 Cache: 6mb
    RAM: 6MB
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000, NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1024 MB
    OpenGL: 3.1.0
    Display: 1920 X 1080
Drives: (1) HD, Seagate 500GB @ 7,200 RPM partitioned as C: 186GB with OS and programs,  D: 254GB some documents
                  E: Optical DVD-RW
F: USB 3 connected 2 TB Seagate GoFlex External HD
If this laptop can be used with current hardware, I wouild sincerely appreciate any suggestions for how to best utilize what is available to begin learning Premier Pro CS6.  As I will not have any time schedules that will have to be met I can accept that this may not be the ideal system.  Just hoping it can be a start.
If any further information is required about the laptop please let me know and Thank You for your time with this question.

That's not a bad setup at all to get started with small projects.
We all have different budgets and patience. You may be OK with what you have. And if it seems too sluggish - your rig would be for me , the following would help Premiere Pro performance:
    - increase RAM to 16GB (about $140 per eBay pricing from a seller with high ratings a few minutes ago)
    - add another drive; my favorite choice with your laptop would be a Seagate Momentus 750gb drive installed in a NEWmodeUS.com optical bay caddy (slips into your laptop)

Exactly what I have done, and it is great.
You can get the caddy here:

I had this setup for my old HP and have a caddy ready to install for my new Dell Precision as well. You can either get an external house for your DVD drive, or get an external one - they are quite cheap.

    Hi Matt,
ok, this phase STARTSAP_NBAS is after the kernel switch => you do need the new kernel. But, I would suspect, that the kernel got applied, but you are having issues with the sapinlpgm ...
You do need the NEW kernel. I would suspect, that it started in the new SBS but it still uses the old job-queue R3_15 => you might become confused on that.

  • Fingerprint Reader access to KeePass (from a Thinkpad with Password Manager)

The goal: secure, convenient, automated login to password-protected sites
KeyPass is a great open-source program for secure creation, storage and use of login passwords and other information. With a plugin called KeeForm, it allows very convenient automatic login to password-protected sites by clicking on a KeePass entry. To preclude unintended access to all of your secure information, it is wise to close Keepass after each use, or set Keepass to lock when minimized. But this is less convenient, because a long secure master password then has to be entered before each use of Keepass.
Using a fingerprint reader to enter Keepass can be a big time saver while retaining security. Capacitive swipe fingerprint readers can be very secure, provided they operate through equally secure software. They are available as USB units, or integrated into some keyboards and notebook computers, for example some Lenovo ThinkPads.
Unfortunately, set-up can be a challenge and there may be disadvantages even after the best workable interface between KeePass and a particular biometric system. This example uses the integrated fingerprint reader and software on a Lenovo ThinkPad X61.
The problem: getting secure fingerprint software to use KeePass
ThinkPads can use Lenovo fingerprint software alone for start-up into Windows, but they need additional layers of software (Client Security Solution - CSS, and Password Manager  - PM) to work with other programs including KeePass. PM uses CSS security functions.
    Cautions about Lenovo CSS:
    1. Some organisations advise against CSS because of problems including clashes with antivirus programs. See http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/lenovo/ and
    http://prowiki.isc.upenn.edu/wiki/ThinkVantage_Software_Under_Windows_Vista
These bugs may have been fixed over time - but install at your own risk!
    2. CSS and PM introduce their own system overheads which may slow some operations.
    3. Once tried, CSS may not simply be inactivated while restoring basic fingerprint start-up into Windows. The X61 at least insists that CSS be reactivated for any fingerprint function. If you try a Windows system restore to a time before CSS was first activated, you may experience the ‘blue screen of death'. The security chip evidently regards your desire for a past configuration as a security breach. With luck you may ‘live again' if you can log into Windows in Safe Mode to undo the attempted system restore. After that, I reactivated CSS. I was not game to try uninstall after inactivation of CSS - but see the ncsu link above.
Having decided to accept the ‘risks' of activating CSS and PM, you may want to try PM for all password management. For me it would not recognise some internet logins, could not complete auto-submission in others, and did not allow the manual adjustments that make KeePass so versatile. Unfortunately PM help is very limited. There is no current user manual (old manuals up to v1.4 available on the web do not match the properties of the current v3 of the software). KeePass (or the KeeForm plugin) also struggles with some sites, but it works much better overall. Help on KeeForm plugin syntax is limited, but otherwise KeePass help is great.
So we really want the fingerprint reader (via PM) to work for KeePass master password entry.
This is not so simple for five interacting reasons:
    (i)  It is tricky to register KeePass in PM;
    (ii) PM then gets confused by ‘hidden' entry of a master password during fingerprint login to KeePass, and repeatedly tries to save ****** as a changed master password;
    (iii) PM also tries to automatically register each entry opened for editing within KeePass;
(iv) PM tries to automatically register other logins even if they are managed through KeePass.
    (v) Your KeePass records are now only as secure as your PM login (which is likely to be your Windows login).
The solutions: or workarounds at least
The best workarounds I could develop for these five issues were:
    (i) To register KeePass in PM, first ensure that PM is running (icon in the system tray). Then launch KeePass, click the login window box for unobscured password display (three blue dots turn black), enter the master password and click OK to start KeePass as usual.
If PM does not offer to save an entry for KeePass by this stage, try ‘plan B'. Open a window to edit an entry in KeePass, then click Cancel. PM seems to recognise this more readily as a login window and may offer to create an entry. Accept the offer, and name the entry KeePass. Then open PM to edit the saved entry. You will have to edit several fields to achieve an effective PM entry for KeePass:
The title field must be "Open database - database.kdb", to match the title of the KeePass login window.
The file name field should show the full path to KeePass.exe (something like C:\Program Files\KeePass\PeePass.exe depending on your installation).
The login and password data field is accessed by double clicking the entry. It will need to show only your KeePass master password (in the unobscured text view). In login and password data, delete each line of unwanted text until you get to the final password line (shown as *****), and edit this line to provide your master password.
In the Advanced tab, select auto-fill and auto-submit and the desired security level [see (v) below]. Then select OK to get to the PM front window, and File - Save Changes, then Exit.
Now when you close and re-launch KeePass, PM should automatically intervene (requesting a fingerprint to complete the KeePass login if you selected that security level. Select ‘No' when PM asks to change the password [see (ii) below].
If you had no luck, try ‘plan C'. Close KeePass completely, then launch it again to open the login window. Then right-click the PM icon in the system tray, open the ‘Type and Transfer Tool', click the box for unobscured password display, type in the KeePass master password, drag the cross-hairs to the password field in the waiting KeePass login window, and release the password there. Click OK to start KeePass as usual, then click OK to close the PM transfer window. If there is still no KeePass entry in PM, check that KeePass has not been included in the PM excluded programs list. If this sequence does not work, reboot and check again. Failing all else, any entry that PM succeeds in making from any login page can be edited to an effective KeePass entry by editing fields as described above for ‘plan B'.
PM (v3.00) can be coy to associate initially, but it will accept KeePass (v1.14) as a password-managed program, and thereafter it reliably succeeds to auto-submit the KeePass login after some help described in (ii) below.
(ii) Having sent the correct master password to the KeePass login window, PM becomes confused by the ‘hidden' text now in the password field, and offers to change its record of your KeyPass master password to ******. You can manually select ‘No' in the PM changed-password dialogue box that appears every time you use PM / fingerprint for KeePass login. But Beware: if you ever accidentally select ‘Yes' (the default) your KeePass master password record in PM will be changed to ******. This can be edited to provide the correct password again, but it is more than a minor pain in the AR5E. Unless you know (or have a backup of) your KeePass master password you just lost access to your KeePass database!
To avoid this big nuisance and risk, you can set up to restart KeePass for each use from a desktop shortcut (instead of minimising it to the system tray) and have the shortcut run a batch file with vbs scripts that send the ‘No' message to PM automatically.
Here is an example batch file, with corresponding vbs scripts. You can make all these files using Notepad and save the files with the names indicated, into the KeePass program directory (C:\Program Files\KeePass in this example).
KeePass.bat (This launches KeePass and tells PM v3 not to change the password. Caution: If Lenovo changed PM program design in future, the effect could change; the batch file might send {TAB}{ENTER} keystrokes to another open window on your computer):
    C:
    cd\
    cd "C:\Program Files\KeePass"
    start " " "C:\Program Files\KeePass\KeePass.exe" "C:\Program Files\KeePass\Database.kdb"
    start /w Sleep.vbs 1
    start /w AppActivate.vbs
    start /w SendKeys.vbs
Sleep.vbs (provides a short delay to open the ThinkVantage dialogue window, otherwise the following scripts fail because they are sent too soon):
    Wscript.Sleep Wscript.Arguments(0) * 1000
AppActivate.vbs (puts focus on the ThinkVantage  Password change dialogue window so that Tab and Enter commands are not sent elsewhere with undesired effects):
    CreateObject("WScript.Shell").AppActivate "ThinkVantage Password Manager"
SendKeys.vbs (sends a ‘No' response to the PM request to change its KeePass entry):
    CreateObject("WScript.Shell").SendKeys "{TAB}{ENTER}"
Please substitute ) where you see smileywink: in the vbs scripts above - I can't get this forum window to stop automatically translating the " ) sequence of text (without a space) as an emoticon.
This batch file approach should work with additional startup switches for KeePass, for example the /backup.path: switch used by ‘another backup' plugin (or you can use the db_backup plugin that works from the KeePass.ini file). Quotes are needed around any entry with spaces. But some things that ‘should work' such as just writing "KeePass.exe" instead of the full path in line 4 of the batch file do not give the same outcome for me. This may be an effect on timing of the switch of focus between windows - so if you strike a problem it may be worth experimenting with the delay time set through the sleep script.
If you set KeePass to lock when minimised, you will have to deal manually with the PM changed-password dialogue every time you re-access KeePass. So it is simpler to close rather than minimise KeePass after each use and restart it when needed, via the batch file.
(iii) You have to tell PM ‘No' whenever it offers to save an entry that is edited in KeePass. This is less of a nuisance, because entries rarely need to be edited once set up in Keepass.  There is no way to turn off this requirement. If you select ‘Never' it will prevent use of PM and therefore fingerprint entry to start KeePass (not just the edit window).
(iv) Turn off internet login within PM. This will leave all internet logins to KeePass. Unfortunately you can not set PM to only allow a single program login (KeePass), but you can set it to exclude specific programs, so do that for other programs that you access via KeePass.
    (v) Finally, set PM security within CSS so that a fingerprint (or a password if the fingerprint reader fails) is needed every time PM is launched (not just once per boot). Similarly, set KeePass security this way within PM. Otherwise (if you set the requirement to once per boot) your passwords are open to inspection while you are away from your booted computer.
Caution: How secure is your Windows login password? Most likely this is also your PM login password, so it now allows access to your KeePass database! Make sure that it is a unique, secure and preferably memorable password.
How close are we now to the desired combination of security and convenience?
Click on the KeePass shortcut to the batch file given above, swipe the fingerprint, wait while CSS works, then click on the relevant Keepass entry to access any password-protected site or application in your Keypass list - great convenience.
Security is very strong - both KeePass and PM are extremely secure unless you use a weak or insecure master password or select less secure settings.
Starting (or opening a locked instance of) KeePass without the batch file given above requires a couple of extra carefully-placed clicks in the process to tell PM not to mess up its entry for KeePass, then to complete KeePass startup. This is less convenient, and a mistake could prevent future database access - so the batch file method is recommended.
A final caution (while enjoying secure & convenient logins):
Beware - fingerprint access is so convenient that you may forget your master passwords! Eventually they will be needed! You may click the wrong button in PM, suffer a faulty fingerprint reader or change computers! Then you must recall your master passwords before you can access your password file (and possibly your computer). This could be devastating: loss of all secure password information in KeePass and PM (and possibly loss of all information on a protected computer drive, not to mention need to pay for a computer motherboard and HDD replacement). So:
    1. Choose very secure but ‘unforgettable' master passwords for KeePass and computer (PM) access.
    2. Always set up a secure master password as an alternative to biometric authentication (in case of a faulty fingerprint reader).
    3. Keep your password database backups, and your separate master password backups, in another secure (preferably encrypted) but accessible location!
    Program versions tested:
    KeePass v1.14 (v2 betas not tested) with KeeForm v2 and DB_Backup v1.14
Lenovo CSS v8.20 with PM v3.00
The solutions were tested in November 2008 on a Thinkpad X61 running Windows Vista Business. The tricks to interface with KeePass can vary between fingerprint programs (search the KeePass forum).

I'm reviving quite an old topic here, but I have been unable to find any other good information on this.  I currently use the latest version of Keepass v2.23 and have Lenovo Passoword Manager v4.3 installed on my new W530 laptop.  I can't get PM to recognize any passowords at all, in web browsers or in windows application.
In PM the only thing I can do is create folders and secure notes.  My fingerprint software works great for automated logins to windows.  Does anyone have any experience with using the fingerprint reader with a windows application like Keepass?
How can I get the Password manager to do ... anything?  Recognize a password in windows or a web browser?
I'm open to any other software to be used or I can write scripts if necessary to accomplish this.  It doesn't seem like this should be so difficult, but from what I've learned about Lenovo so far, is that nothing is easy.  After trying to get battery charge thresholds working proplery in Windows 8, I've already lost faith in a company that I thought had a great reputation.

  • Mail routing to wrong mailbox

I run Mail 3.3, with 10.5.4. I today just zeroed the drive and reinstalled.
As is typical, the only persisting issue is Mail. This is one issue I can't recall experiencing before, though.
I have mail that is addressed to two different email addresses - ending-up in the same Mail Inbox. I have trashed the .plist preference file, erased the account folders, and created new ones. So-far, the issue persists. The messages all show going to the username of the given mailbox in which they reside, but the address of some mail is for a different account.
Also, when I delete a message now, they don't go into Trash, but stay in the Inbox, and turn grey.
Anyone have any idea(s) on how I can correct this.

    Hi again,
Mail has always worked superbly for me in all versions, including the current one, and I have 9 accounts.
Mail does not utilize the email address to construct the Username -- the Username of each account must be unique, even if from the same provider (in this case your ISP, apparently). The Username must be correctly entered and will in nearly all cases be the portion of the email address in front of the email address or the entire email address entered in the spot for Username. It does necessarily have to relate to the Login ID given to you by your ISP, although it might be the same for your primary email account if that Login ID is included in your email address. Mail only communicates with any mail server via the Username and Password you enter when setting up the account -- the email address entry can actually be different from that of the account, but then that would normally be problematic in that the From address would not be what you desire. But that is one way alias addressees are handled in Mail since you can have multiple addresses in the Email Address box.
Click on View in the menubar, and see if either Show Deleted Message or Hide Deleted Messages is presented in Black -- it so (and with your report it probably has Hide Deleted Messages) then the preferences have become confused at some point. I would change the Preference to Deselect moving deleted message to a separate folder, immediately Quit Mail, and then change the preference to again move them to a separate folder and test.

  • Serious and rapidly increasing Customer Service Failures...

I have been a "Mercedes Plan/Equipment" user, since April, 2002.
I live in a rural area (Southeastern WA State), and the regional carrier was highly inadequate. I found Verizon to be a superior alternative.
My experience, led many of my fellow citizens (all 500) of us, to purchase Verizon service and phones.
Personally, my "problems" did not begin; until I moved to Whidbey Island, WA, in late 2005. I explored "plan options," with help from several CSP's, and my son in-law...who sold me the plan (he owned his own, independent store at the time).
Shortly after, I assume (I should have  personally monitored my service plan more carefully, rather than trusting that Verizon would keep me advised of plan changes and new, improved plans...back when plans "got better; as opposed to worse!") several less expensive programs became available, to accommodate my needs. Believe it or not, I was paying nearly $500/month?!
Fortunately, in a "routine" call about reception problems, my CSP was SHOCKED to see what I was paying, versus what I was "using." She determined I had paid approximately $242/mo. more than necessary...for 13 months!! Yes, I feel quite the fool...
Verizon was unapologetic; but the CSP FOUGHT to get me at least one month's refund. Sigh...nearly $3000 into the funding of a rapidly deteriorating entity?!
Well, other than some incredibly helpful company store employees (who have become less and less able to assist?!), my "Verizon Experience" has progressively deteriorated into "Verizon Inexperience/Poor experience/Incompetence/Nightmare and FRUSTRATION!"
Anyone else "feel the pain," and sad to see the decline of this (unfortunately) near "monopolistic" entity?
Sigh, if only another carrier provided as strong a coverage map...with caring and competent customer service and support!!
I returned to my "little farm community" in mid-2009; where many of the people I had "sold" on Verizon, sought to "wring my neck!"
Verizon, in order to accommodate "commuter students and faculty" from several institutions of higher education in our area; put in a new, very powerful tower (primarily for data service) about 10 miles east of town.
This has DESTROYED voice service in our community. The good news is, data is actually quite good?!
Verizon has promised a solution (many of us complained...and continue to do so) and have been repeatedly "promised" a solution for 3.5 years.
It seems, since the wavelength for voice is shorter, it is more easily disrupted by obstacles; even weather.
Our phones, first seek a Verizon tower, then switch to a "roaming" tower, if the signal is poor. Unfortunately, just a minor movement of the phone can initiate this action...resulting in the phone becoming confused and dropping the call, or so badly degrading the transmission, it can't be understood.
Last week, in a conversation with a CSP; re, a different issue; I brought up the idea that Verizon should give us all "signal boosters." He kept reiterating I could buy one for $250, so I hung up!
This morning, I checked my Gmail Spam (not sure why I did?)...and discovered to emails from Verizon, sent to MULTIPLE email addresses(??), and regarding a phone number and RIDICULOUS amount of dollars paid on somebody's account?!
The emails appear to be 100% legit.
I am concerned that Verizon e-statements have been "hacked?!?!"
Gmail assures me, my account has not been "hacked."
I am enclosing a copy of the "SPAM" e-mail I received this morning; but with all references to multiple e-mails REMOVED.
    PLEASE BE AWARE and VIGILANT!
This morning, I sent an "incensed" e-mail to Verizon...it might explain a bit more (it does NOT even include all the inconveniences) about my frustration.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am forwarding a copy of the e-mail, and a detailed list of problems to both the FCC and the FTC. It has been suggested that I acquire the services of an attorney...either as an individual, or perhaps, on behalf of the community.
Here is a copy of the e-mail, sent this morning:
{The continued demise of Verizon service, and increasing general incompetence; continue to amaze and frustrate.
Voice service from my home and hometown was "destroyed" in 2009, by a newly installed tower. Promises to repair have been bogus...most recently, a supposed agreement to add a translator or such, to local Inland Cell. tower. HAH!
I pay late every month...as part of my "protest."
Two years ago, YOU switched ownership of my plan; to a person that DID NOT EVEN EXIST! The "Carline *******" was close to that of my then 74 year-old sister, "Carolyn *******." In the process of solving the problem; the original call was "dropped" SIX TIMES! I had to get "Carolyn" on conference call (frightening and confusing her)...to get the account (opened under my name and Social Sec. number in 2002), switched back to me?! The inconvenience was increased, by having to create a BRAND NEW ACCOUNT and new billing cycle.
Last week, I noticed my brother, "Lester *****" has his phone, 509.951.****, STILL LISTED AS "CARLINE *******?!" A phone adviser promised to fix it; but as of yesterday (i reviewed my online statement) it appeared unchanged? I also told the poor young "pawn," Verizon should provide all local customers with free "signal boosters." Yeah, right! He continued to "recite his script;" about my "buying one"...so I hung-up on him.
Back in 2006, a phone adviser, identified that I had been sold the wrong plan...and had paid approx. $242/mo. too much, for 13 months?!
She was able to get me a refund of just "ONE MONTH." Thanks MUCH!
Today, I received in my SPAM Gmail (which I by chance checked); two e-mails from what appears to be Verizon? A "late notice," and a "notice of payment;" both sent to MULTIPLE ADDRESSES, and identifying the last four digits of a phone number I DO NOT RECOGNIZE. I am so sorry to be STUCK WITH VERIZON... THIS EMAIL, THE SPAM will all go to the FCC.
    YOU'RE PATHETIC!!
    Joseph A. *****}
    509.951.****
If there are many of you out there, with similar struggles; perhaps we should "unite and fight?!"
    Thanks,

Just to add to the mix.
We were told today that the wayleaves team had written to 1 of our neighbours asking for permissions and that they were awaiting their response. I have spoken to the neighbour in question (he works away from the poperty) and he has said that he has sent 2 replies already so where have they gone (sat on someones desk no doubt)? They also said they didn't need to contact the middle property as the connection would be overhead (complete rubbish as the lines here are underground). Although, I have subsequently contacted the middle property (who also live away, it's a holiday let) who have told me that they have received a letter from BT asking for their permission and they replied in earnest, and BT have replied to their reply acknowledging thier reply and sending them a cheque of £25 compensation.
Basically no one knows what is going on, and I don't know what to do....

  • Questions about using an external drive as my main drive

This topic has been addressed in discussion threads before, but I'm in search of a few details.
I have a Mac mini 1.42 combo, 512 mb RAM, with an external 250 gb MiniStack FW drive. The external FW drive spins at 7200 rpm, while the internal drive in the mini is a 4200 rpm model. Because of the higher disk speed, I'm considering making my external FW drive my main drive, then reformatting my mini's internal drive to use for backup purposes only. My backups to the mini's internal drive would be bootable, so I wouldn't have to have Tiger installed on the mini's internal drive.
Additionally, I've got my iTunes library on another partition on the same external FW drive. I'm really happy with the result of that move so far.
I've experimented a bit already. I've used SuperDuper to clone my mini's drive to a different partition on the external FW drive, and confirmed that I can boot from it using the external FW drive as my startup disk, so that's not an issue.
I'm planning to move over to the external FW drive and use that as my startup disk and main drive, but keep the mini's external drive as is for a while before I reformat it and use it strictly for backups. I've got some questions before I commit to this, though. (shudder!)
*Updates for applications and Tiger-If I continue to use Apple's Software Update to conduct my software upgrades, will it automatically update the applications on my external FW drive? I'm assuming that Software Update identifies the boot drive and the app's location before performing the update. I'm concerned that Software Update will become confused once it can't identify my mini's internal drive as the 'main' disk, and will lose the functionality to handle my updates.
*Default drives for other applications-For those of you that have already moved to an external disk as your main drive, did you have to change preferences in other apps (like the MS Office Suite) to tell them where to look for files and save new docs/save updated docs? I use Office a lot for a part-time job, and it would be a pain to have to manually update all that info.
*iTunes-As I've already stated, I've moved my iTunes music library over to a partition on my external FW drive and it's worked well so far. What concerns me is the funky way that Apple requires the iTunes management files and folders be on your main drive in your Home folder, but allows the music files to reside on a different disk. When iTunes needs to update itself, or manage the music library, is it going to be happy working from the home folder on the external disk, or will I have problems? In other words, as long as the iTunes management files are on my boot drive, am I OK?
Thanks for wading through this wordy post. If I decide to make the plunge, I'll report back to the list. I'm sure a bunch of mini owners are considering the move to external drives to boost performance. I love the machine, but I can always use more speed!
