OS X Tiger - Help!!!!!!

Hi
I've got an old G4 Powerbook which I don't use anymore and I'm planning to give it to my Dad to mess about on now he's retired. Thing is this:
I bought it from my bro 4 years ago without any discs, he bought it from someone without same. An old friend of mine installed a copy of (probably slightly dodgy) Tiger on the machine about 2 years ago. The Machine is running incredibly slowly and wants a wipe clean methinks. Question is, what can I do? I don't have any discs to restore either Tiger or previous OS. Any thoughts? Can you still pick up copies of either (cheaply)? I was planning to take the laptop to my Dad for Christmas so anyone's quick ideas on where I can get a disc or any other possible solutions for 'wiping' the machine I'd be very grateful.

The Discs are really needed, See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9755670&#9755670
Other than that, I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Can't login OS X Tiger HELP. Won't take my password on login

I am getting ready to buy my new MacBookPro next week and wanted to give my old Powerbook Ti to my sister. But she didnt want to get the login screen everytime just want to power up and start working. So after going threw a few forums I deleted the root netuser. Know when it boots it will not take my user name and password I can't login. Is there a default admin password or maybe switch back to my org password? I do not want to reinstall the OS because I have alot of pictures and mp3 that I need to tranf over to my new mac when I get it. I need HELP to get in my mac

How did you delete the user account? How many accounts did you have? The "Accounts" System Preference should not have let you delete the last administrator account. If you still have an administrator account, you can reset its p[password by booting from the Tiger install disk. After setting language, look in the menus for password resetting.

  • Panther to Tiger Help

Hi, I searched the forums and did not find any specific answer for my question so I figured it would not hurt to ask. I recently picked up a brand new copy of Tiger and am a bit confused. Will it not just overwrite my old OS (panther) and leave me access to all my applications and folders and whatever else I have on my mac? After reading the Install guide and going through the forums it seems i have to back up and then re-load all the programs and software etc. after tiger is installed. I just thought it would be easier than this as it seems like a lot of trouble and I definitley don't want to screw up and lose a bunch of stuff especially software and music. I do have most of my stuff, if not all of it backed up on data dvd's, it just seems a little tedious to me to have to reinstall everything. Sorry for my newbness any help would be great.

  • Mail lost when upgrading to Tiger - help!

We finally upgraded to Tiger 9from an earlier version of OS X. When we opened mail, we were prompted to import messages. But only the most recent messages appear in the new mailbox -- we've lost thousands of e-mails!
How can we recover the lost e-mails and import them into the mail program in Tiger?
    Thanks!

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Upgrading OS9 to Tiger - Help!!

I have an iMac G4 (15in flat screen) with 1G of Ram. It was given to me by a friend. I was trying to install Tiger onto it. It previously had OS 9. The problem is that when I put Tiger in, it took out my old OS and then started to install Tiger. Halfway through Tiger there was a glitch and it stopped downloading. It made me re-start my computer and now Tiger will not install becuase my previous OS is gone and it can't find it. I am so lost and have no clue what to do!!! Any help would be great!!!!!

  • Upgrade to Tiger help

    Hello All,
I have a quick question that hopefully has a quick solution. I am trying to upgrade an older G4 tower with 10.2 on it to Tiger. The problem, I have Tiger and the rest of my applications on an external hard drive and is a bootable copy. I trie4d hooking it up to the tower and wanted to use migration assistant to bring over the information from the external, however, there is no migration assistant! How did people running 10.2 back in the day do it? Specifically, what is the easiest way to bring a complete bootable system over from on a external firewire harddrive and load it onto the tower, that is currently running an older OS.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

If you can boot from external drive, a no cost way of achieving your goal would be to boot from the Tiger drive and then use Disc Utility to do a Restore. This will make an exact copy of your external drive onto the internal. Super Duper does basically the same thing, and is a terrific program because it also allows you to do incremental backups - which Restore does not. But if you don't want to spend the money, I have never had restore fail to give me a perfect copy. If you do boot from the Tiger drive, repair permissions and run a utility like Mac Janitor or Onyx before you make your copy. Restore isn't the fastest program in the world, but is very reliable.

    Hi hujaboy;
There was a program for those who bought their Macs during the month of Leopard's release to get it at a reduced price but that has long since expired. Now if you want Leopard you will have to purchase it.

  • Tiger Help Needed Badly - won't start

    Please can someone help.
    My macbook has died!
I was restarting the computer because there was an update and the mac told me too. And then in the middle of restarting it froze. I tried everything (held down the start key, tried it with the option button held down too, reset the battery - the works) but all I get is a black screen. I went searching for my system disc to do the repair thing but I can't find it anywhere. What should I do?? I tried calling apple care but they said they don't sell tiger anymore.
Does anyone know where I could get one?? I bought leapord but I don't want to use it cos' I'm scared it will wipe all my files and give me no option to run a repair/ first aid on it.
    Any suggestions are greatly welcomed.

Hi Louisa, and Welcome to the Discussions!

  • More Heat/Fan Issues with Tiger--Help

I have followed the heat & fan issues for sometime. However, I finally decided it was time to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3.
I upgraded yesterday, first using the upgrade option to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.0 and then installed the 10.4.3 combo upgrade. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the disk directory using Disk Warrior. There were no directory errors and only a couple of trivial permissions changes.
However, my Powerbook's fans are running constantly and my CPU heat is always pegged at about 135 degrees F, which is as hot as it ever gets. This happens within about 40 minutes of starting the Powerbook up cold and it stays that way for as long as I'm using it, regardless if there are any apps being used.
Activity Monitor indicates that the launchd process is using from 18% to 20% of my CPU, even with nothing else running. I've disabled all Spotlight indexing and I've turned Dashboard off. It appears that it's the lanchd process that is accounting for the extra heat and fan use. It simply won't drop below the 18% to 20% of CPU. There is no other process that is using any significant amount of my CPU when nothing else is running.
My processor is set at Automatic, the same as when I was using 10.3.9.
I was using Silk, Application Switching Menu (ASM) and Macaroni, but I've uninstalled them. No change.
I've reset the Power Manager (including deleting the com.Apple.PowerManagement.xml file) and reset NVRAM. Again, no change.
Finally, when I boot back into 10.3.9 (on my backup hard drive), the fan activity and heat return to what I consider normal--much lower than with 10.4.3. Specifically, the heat and fan activity is directly related to CPU use. If I'm not doing anything, the heat drops and all the fans go off.
There is one other curious effect of 10.4.3 vs. 10.3.9. When I'm running Firefox (latest version), all Firefox user-interface stuff (menu selections, opening many tabs in succession, etc.) are MUCH more sluggish than when using 10.3.9. Frankly, I was expecting the opposite.
I would really like some help with this. I've read all the troubleshooing info on MacFixit and Macintouch related to heat and fan issues associated with Tiger.
    12 1.5Ghz Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm the originator of this thread and I appear to have an answer.
I tried an "Archive and Install" of Tiger, on top of my existing 10.4.3 install that was giving me the trouble I described above. I had the time today and figured "what the heck[ll]".
I then installed each additional piece (10.4.3 combo update, airport updates, quicktime updates, java updates, etc), stopping after each one to check CPU temperatures and CPU use in Activity Monitor.
I'm now back to a full 10.4.3 install, with all current recommended Apple software and I don't have the heat/CPU use problems I previously had. There is no significant use of the CPU by the launchd process.
I also re-enabled Spotlight indexing and that doesn't cause a problem either.
Also, my entire system is *MUCH* quicker and responsive. I wish I knew what piece in my previous system install was causing the problem, but hopefully my experience can help someone else. When in doubt, do an "Achive and Install" rather than an update to the previous system installation.
By the way, with heavy Spotlight indexing going on and mild web browsing, my CPU temp is just 112 to 115 degrees F. Previously, with no Spotlight indexing and with NO apps running, my CPU temp was maxed at 135 degrees with fans on full. And if you're reading this thread, you know what max fans sound like on a 12" PB.

  • Os x tiger help - finder crashes all over the place

This is my first mac, I'm coming here for help, I'll try to keep muy internal laughing to a minimum, I bought this thing "because of all the hype" and "macs dont crash.... blah....blah...blah.." (I guess the people doing the pc vs mac commericals DONT visit here..)
Anyways, I just got it back after having to send it in on day 4 for a failed lcd and motherboard (lets not go there)
Anyways, Im still learning my way around the OS, I come from the Unix wsorkstation, and linux laptop world, so please bear with me.
From day 1 I have been having problems with the entire finder system reseting, Im going to call it finder because for instance if I have safari open in the back ground, it doenst restart, but my hard drive icons, and icons on the desktop disapear and then return after a few seconds (Im assuming this is finder restarting). Their is no real madness to the restarting, I can however almost guarentee that it will restart while broswing a NFS or AFS share from my NAS device. Almost ALLWAYS when I click the left mouse button (to pull up info/trash/copy), about 25% of the time it will pause and then bring up the menu, 50% of the time it works with no issue, and 25% of the time it just like flashes the entire screen and repopulates my icons on my desktop. If I was in a couple of subfolders, they are not re-opened. If I had managed to change the view "list" properties, those do not hold either (unless I make the change, close the window, and then reopen) but anything done in that session does not hold.
It started off doing it mostly in my network attached disks, but I think that was because most of my software is there, I started to notice that it does it wihtin the "Mac HD" just as often now, but then again, I wasnt navigating there in the beggining as much.
When I got my laptop back on day 14 after they replaced the video card and lcd, I decided that I would install OSX as when I bought it, it was preinstalled.
With a fresh os install it does the same thing. I then paid to have the 75gb drive replaced with a 200gb drive and re-installed again, it seemed as though it wasnt happening as much, but on day 16, its started doing it again. Its not like I can do something to make it happen every time, its random, my only guess is that something is wrong with the hardware, since it happens with a fresh os install. I have installed a few applicaitons that tie into the OS, like stuffit w/magic menu. I guess I can uninstall all those applications to make sure that they are not to blame. Anyone have any suggestions, are their finder logs some where in the BSD installation I can look at?. I have also been told that my 2 gb ram upgrade and 200gb HD replacement will have to be removed before I attempt to take it to a "genuis" (common man) again. Before I have to pay or do that myself, can someone verify that this is the case?
    Thanks for any help.

Being that you had to have the motherboard replaced, I'd say there might be more "bad" parts in there. There are stories in these forums of people that got lemons and it took a lot of persistence to get them replaced. One bad Apple...
You might find a crashlog in the CrashReporter logs using the Console app (Utilities folder). Since your are not getting a "this app failed, do you want to report..." I don't think it will be written to CrashReporter, but any of the logs may give you a clue (a lot of stuff is written to the console log).
As for replacing the original parts, I don't know if that would be required by Apple, but it would surely give them an "out" to lay the blame somewhere else. It shouldn't be difficult to swap them back out yourself, especially the RAM.

  • Update to Tiger HELP!!

    Hey guys,
A bit of a problem I am in, I am trying to upgrade an old G4 tower (30 gig HD, 466 MHz PowerPC G4 with 10.2 currently installed on it) to Tiger OS. The tower does not have a DVD drive, just CD, so the copy I have does not obviously work. Second, I went into the towers utilites to try and find Migration Assistant, as I could do it this way and hook it up to an external bootable hard drive I have with Tiger, however, there is no MIgration Assistant!!!If 10.2 did not have migration assistant, how did they transfer stuff from old to new computer abck then??
    Any suggestions??
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   120 GB HD, DL DVD, 640 RAM

    1. You can contact Apple for a CD copy of the disk. (but it will cost you more money). 2. Try the option key on boot, and boot to the Tiger External. Then you will have migration assistant in Tiger, and will be able to pull your old data over. 3. Here is my suggestion... IF AND WHEN you get all your data over to Tiger.. use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy and completely clone the external and internal drives. Then Tiger will be on both, but warning, if you dont get everything over, it wont be there when you go back to look for it.

  • Cpu use tops 100% after I load tiger help

My cpu load according to my x-rescource graph has gone out the roof and there is only 1 program running, the heat is is causing fan to come on. I have run disk permission with cocktail and on the disk utility. If this continues I will have to revert back to the panther, help, I fear this could damage my machine as it is running way too hot.

I don't know what an "x-resource graph" is, but if you open Activity Monitor in your /Applications/Utilities folder, and look at the CPU usage, you will be able to see exactly which process(es) is (are) demanding these resources.
Please post back with what you find.

    hi,
i first bought a official copy of os 9.0 then tiger said you need 9.1 so i bought 9.1 and when i hold c at startup no go...so i try booting up in system preferences no go. then when i double click install it says it already had 9.1 installed and i should have 9.2???? but there is nothing in the classic folder.
also i tried dragging and dropping the sytem folder and utilities from the os9.1 cd into the classic folder and then the computer startsup with a question mark over folder and refuses to boot up. so i had to reinstall tiger. help i want classic.
this is a titanium poerbook with the option of os9 startup

    Hi Benjamin,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
There is no need to buy OS 9 retail disks - and depending on what generation PowerBook you have you won't even be able to use them (Macintosh: Some Computers Only Start Up in Mac OS X).
You can reinstall OS 9 (Classic) from the software install&restore disks that originally shipped with your computer: Click on "Support" on top of this page, then type "reinstall classic" into the search field. From the results select the version of your original disks for detailed instructions how to resinstall OS 9.
BTW: No need to buy 9.1 or 9.2 disks. They are free updates and available here: Mac OS 9: Available Updates

This happens not infrequently. When it does I routinely apply Dr.Smoke's remedy of trashing 3 library files and rebooting and Mac Help works again.

I wonder if there is a further treatment that could wake up this help file, or a test to pinpoint the cause of the dysfunction?

    1. You wrote: "tep 3 of Solution 3 of "Help Viewer links do not work" refers to Incompatible Startup or Login Items, for which the recommanded solution is to update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later and then reset Help Viewer"No: that's incorrect. Step 2 refers to the update. Step 3 refers to "Rule out incompatible Startup or Login Items" and refers you to my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ.
Seems you've not performed Step 2, either, which will probably solve the problem permanently.
    2. You wrote: "Quote:To display the toolbar for Help Viewer, click the elliptical button at the far right in the title bar of the Help Viewer window.Unquote
There is no elliptical button at the far right of the title bar. only the Ask a Question field (typing a word in it sets the spinning wheel turning endlessly)
I cannot control click the HelpViewer toolbar to customize it."Once again, you are misreading the FAQ. The item you quote from above is from the section entitled "Help Viewer does not display a search field under Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier" in the FAQ. That's a new section and follows the section on "Help Viewer links do not work". You should be able to tell it's a new section as the title is larger, i.e. its a new heading. There are links to the individual sections at the start of the FAQ, but the sections run linearly throughout the FAQ.
That new section obviously does not apply to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) since it states "Mac OS X 10.3 and Earlier." Under Tiger, Help Viewer's toolbar cannot be customized. That feature was only available in Panther (10.3) and earlier. Likewise, it does not apply to your current problem, but a different problem.
My FAQ covers Help Viewer for Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), and Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). The titles of sections or the details within a section can be version-specific and are noted accordingly.
    3. You wrote: "Should I rebuild the OSX desktop? (I have a utility by that name). or go ahead an update to OS 10.4.7?
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047comboppc.html says it is 145Mb!!! "Neither.
You should update to Mac OS X 10.7 using Software Update, which will download just the changes you need for the update. You do not need to download the Combo Update to perform an update.
Some people recommend always downloading and installing the Combo Update. I do not: I think that approach is a waste of time.
    4. You wrote: "I am a little reluctant to update because it often creates more problems than it cures."That has not been my experience. While there are often many posts here on the Discussions about "problems caused by an update" they are usually the result of self-inflicted wounds:
    • People install updates on already-corrupted systems, making a bad problem worse.
    • They are running third-party software, often hacks and interface modifications relying on undocumented features of the OS, that are rendered incompatible with the update.
Granted, some updates have had bugs, but I've personally found that most post-update problems are the the result of user errors or a lack of maintenance, rather than problems with the update.
If your system is properly maintained and not "hacked-up" then you should not have any problems with Software Updates.
Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!
