OS9 catalog errors after reboot from OSX
Every time I restart in OS 9.2.2, after leaving OSX (10.3.9), I get a notice from Norton Disk Doctor that my catalog files are damaged or missing.
I also experience dead links in my Apple Menu items in OS 9. My preferences for Stuffit are corrupted, the program can't seem to locate my OS9 desktop, and I have to reset the prefs. Ditto for my IE downloads. Photoshop7, and Freehand8 NEVER return to the "Last Folder Used" (and that always bugged me, and I have never been able to fix it).
I bought the Apple Care Plan for 3 years, and not one of these issues was ever fixed. Now my care plan has expired, I am out $300 and got zero help.
As you can see by my screen name, I really hate OS X, but I have no choice but to use it for some websites who refuse to make things backward compatible, AND for itunes.
Other than that, I try to stay away from it at all costs.
BUT, now it is screwing up my OS 9.
Also, my startup discs will not let me reinstall OS 9. The discs I purchased say "eMac" on them, but I don't have an eMac. I have a G4. The Apple Care specialist told me it didn't matter that my discs say eMac, but I get the feeling they were lying.
I have tried a clean install of OSX, then when I try to install the OS9 package, it says it's not for my computer.
Well??? Any suggestions about the whole cataloging thing?
Thanks, Chris
(my real name was taken already as a screen name, or I wouldn't have been so grouchy with the one I have
When I use Norton Disk Doctor under Mac OS 9, I pretty much ignore the "minor" errors. If it finds a "major" error, I quit and let Disk Warrior have a shot at fixing it first.
Do you use that same Mac OS 9 System Folder for both direct booting and for Classic under Mac OS X? If so, and you switch often from X to 9, you may want to make a copy of the Mac OS 9.2.2 System Folder. Optimize one for Classic and the other for direct booting. To get the one for Classic "out-of-sight," you can actually put it on a mounted disk image. Make a blank disk image (with Disk Utility) that is about 10% larger than the System Folder. Copy the System Folder to the disk image. Once there, use the System Preferences Classic panel to select that System Folder on the disk image for use with Classic. Once you do that, even if the disk image is not mounted, it will mount automatically when Classic is needed. You can then optimize your Classic System Folder as suggested in this excellent article on Low End Mac to make Classic under X faster and more stable.
http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html
Alternately, if you ever need to back up your files and reformat the hard drive, you may want to partition it into two volumes. On one partition, install Mac OS X only. On the other partition, install Mac OS 9 only. If you use Classic, copy the Mac OS 9 System Folder from the 9 partition to the X partition. Change its name to "System Folder (Classic)" or some other name so you do not get confused when selecting in the System Preferences Classic panel. Only use this System Folder for Classic under Mac OS X; never boot directly from it. For direct Mac OS 9 booting, use the one in the other partition; never use IT for Classic, just direct booting. Normally, it is not necessary to separate Mac OS 9 and X, but since you having some unusual issues, it may be worth the effort.
Either way (with a disk image or two partitions), having separate System Folders for X and 9 may reduce your headaches when switching from 9 to X and back.
If your Mac OS 9 installation CD is for an eMac, it may or may not work with a Power Mac G4. Please explain what error you see when you try to do it. Can't really help without more details on how it fails...

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards? -
MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit running on a BootCamp partition on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3. When I first installed 7 last year, I initially had a strange problem in that the Mac wouldn't sleep (default settings) when rebooted back into OS X from BootCamp. If I did another restart in OS X, everything returned to normal. I never found a solution to the problem but after a while it went away and things worked properly. Now, after several months and for no good reason I can think of, the problem has returned. Everything works correctly in both OSs except for this. Any help would be appreciated.
CliveTried repairing BootCamp in 7, no change, don't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place.
Here is a section of the log after reboot from BootCamp and it says "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". This ONLY happens after a reboot from Bootcamp, after another reboot all goes back to normal. What could the "active remote login session" be?

MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows (again!)
This problem originally occurred about a year ago and no solution was found then but after a time, it simply went away. Well, now it's back: after a reboot into OS X (10.6.7) from Windows (7 Ultimate 64 Bit), my MacBook Pro refuses to sleep until rebooted a second time, after which it behaves correctly again. The Console log reports the following message: "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". I've disabled Growl and DropBox (possible suspects last time) to no effect, reset the SMC and PRAM, all the usual things. I've tried when connected to mains power or battery, on wired, wireless or no network at all and still the same problem. Sleep behaviour under Windows is correct. Hopefully the problem will eventually cure itself as it did last time but I would like to discover the reason and find out what this "remote login session" could possibly be. To reiterate, this ONLY occurs immediately after rebooting from Windows.

You may check by supreuser account first to see if you got the same error. If not, it probably just related to user authorization. If yes, it must be a bug.

Kernel Panic Error after last MAC OSX update
Hi all,
My first post here.
Last week, after install the last update of MAC OSX on my intel IMac (last of 2009), when the computer was restarting, a kernel error screen appears...
I've launched the safe mode, and the computer starts fine and I've execute the disk utility to repair HDD and rights. I've done the same initializing from the installation DVD, but the kernel error appears again...
I leave only the usb apple keyboard plugged, and I don't understand why this error still happening, and of course why it occurs after a MAC OSX standard update (no new hardware or software installed in the las month).
I'm little desperate with this issue
kernel error.
Many thanks in advance!
Best regards
Hugo

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
/private/var/run/StartupItems
/Library/StartupItems

It does look like the com.metakine.handsoff.driver, whatever that's about. -
Non-system disk Error when rebooting from Windows Disk
Hello,
I'm trying to run Windows 7 Pro on a partition on my Macbook pro retina display. I have reached the step where through bootcamp you reboot from the wondows disk. I have the windows disk in an external optical drive and have tried both 32 and 64 bit installation disks and still getting the same error"
"Non-system disk
Press and key to reboot"
When I hit any key nothing happends, have to turn off computer by holding power button.
I have also tried turning the computer on and holding cammad R, and selecting the boot disk manually, same error occurs.
Any suggestions?Reboot your Mac while holding down the Alt/Option-key until the Boot Selection screen comes up.
Choose to boot into oSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset OSX to be the default.
Btw.: there are no OSX Lion discs unless you made one yourself.
Lion has Recovery instead OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery

Mac Pro crashes multiple times after rebooting from boot camp
Everytime i reboot into OSX after using Vista in boot camp, i crash within seconds (grey screen takes over saying i need to hold down power button, etc.) i reboot. get back on my desktop in OSX and apple wants me to send the information because the comp shut down improperly, but within seconds, i crash again. this process repeats about 4-6 times till it finally is able to stay on and not have to reboot.
i have a mac pro 8-core with OS 10.5.4. I use boot camp (unsure of version is that matters) and Vista Business Version.
this only happens when i restart into OSX after using boot camp vista. anyone know what may be the problem? i feel reluctant to use boot camp knowing the problems i will face once i return to OSX. not to mention, the wear and tear my comp is suffering from the manual shut downs and restarts.Lol.
I'm sorry but that genius is waaaay off. it has nothing to do with windows, it has to do with the way EACH OS stores the time in the hardware EFI/BIOS
Its a known issue with using two different platforms
OSX reads time for the time zone its selected windows doesnt think it needs to change all the time, so it creates its based off the previous changes in BIOS/EFI
The time should auto-adjust in Windows/OSX or just click Update Time in either
icrosoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems handle your computer's date and time information differently, so the date and time may be different when you switch operating systems. For best results, use a network time server and resync the date and time whenever you switch operating systems. In Mac OS X, use the “Set date & time automatically” option in the Date & Time preferences. In Microsoft Windows, click the Update Now button in the “Date and Time Properties” control panel.

Early Chipset Initialitation error after rebooting
I just bought a K8N SLI Platinum mobo and everything works fine but after rebooting the PC I got an "Early Chipset Initialization Error" .
The only way to shut down the computer is using the power supply switch .
If I turn on the power supply inmediatly, instead of going to standby mode the PC reboots and go back to the same error.
But if I leave it off for half an hour, then it boots fine an everything works OK !!!
Do you think that I am having a power supply issue ???
The main problem is that when the computer hangs or when I need to change the bios configuration I must wait a time before rebooting the system .
The power supply is rated at 500W but it is a generic brand . . . perhaps its real rating is 350W ??
January 3rd, 2006
Last news,
Yesterday I've tryed everythig I found in different forums :
1.- I disconnect all unnecesary devices (CDR - DVDRW - HDs - Fans , etc)
. . . nothing happens
2.- I remove one stick of memory (I was using 2x512 MB Kingston)
. . . nothing happens
3.- I check the BIOS for Sahdow RAM and disable that option
. . . nothing happens
4.- I replace the power supply by another that a friend of mine is using with the same mobo.
. . . nothing happens
But finally,
5.- I see that the small card that MSI use to select Single Video Card or Dual Video Card (SLI) is lose.
I tighten it in place using the plastic clamp and since then the system seems to work OK.
Should this be the cause of my headache ???
Someone suffer the same problem ???
John BishPerhaps we should get back on track and help out jrgbish .
Signature or not .
He already said he has a new "K8N SLI Platinum" running a noname 500w , that perhaps ony is real 350w and gets d-bracket error.
So it looks like a nwe build in process .
My first advice would be to get all power connections from PSU to mobo and gfx all wired up , disconnect
all but one HD and one optical , use plain ps2 mouse and keyboard without any kvm's ,
use one memory stick in dimm slot1 and se if it posts .
If it doesn't get hold of and try with a known good PSU with higher ratings on +12v line . -
Installed Arch on external usb drive: Drive errors after reboot
I installed Arch on my external usb hard drive and everything seemed to be working fine. After rebooting though, I had a bunch of filesytem errors (ext3) and the system was unstable. I am guessing that this has to do with the unloading of the usb modules at shutdown. If this happens to early, then the root drive doesn't have a chance to shutdown properly, hence the filesystem errors.
Anyone know how to solve this?
Thanks!EtreCheck looks at your log files for any kernel I/O errors. That is what it is reporting. EtreCheck just reports what it finds and tries to avoid judgements exception the most extreme cases. The drive might be OK. I am seeing more reports of this than I would have expected. It may just be a problem with Yosemite. It really prefers SSD disks in all cases. On my own machine, I have seen a slow external drive exhibit classic failure symptoms and sounds when connected via USB2. But then when I switched to FW800, it was fine. Other people are reporting that when they downgraded back to Mavericks, their disk errors went away.
So, I don't have a good answer for you. The drive might be bad, and it might be fine. Yosemite is definitely having problems with it. You may experience performance problems with that drive attached. -
After upgrading from SOA 10.1.3.1 to 10.1.4.1 , I cant run any Struts 1 pages from my web application.
I used to have "commons-logging-1.0.4.jar" under j2ee\<INSTANCE_NAME>\applib, and it worked fine before the upgrade, but after I upgraded I get this exception in the application log

I tried moving this jar inside my war module, but problem still occures.
However, if I removed the jar "commons-loging.jar" from "OracleAS_1\webservices\lib", everything works fine!
Any ideas how to solve this problem??It is an old post, but I want to add and ask something anyway:
I had the same problem and solved it through similar steps (didn't get the same errors and added the log4j to my project also) but don't you have the navigation problem?
Now that I have deployed the application the first page that appears after launching the application is my Home.jspx which is not the same page that comes up when I use embedded OC4J to run the application. The Home.jspx is blank and when I enter a link manually:

instead of http://farbod:8888/TestApp/faces/pages/Home.jspx
I get this error:
500 Internal Server Error
Servlet error: An exception occurred. The current application deployment descriptors do not allow for including it in this response. Please consult the application log for details.
I also tried changing the initial address throughout the application:
<% response.sendRedirect("faces/pages/Home.jspx"); %>
but I still get the above error.
Thanks,

Maxdb give Kernel error after upgrade from 7.3 to 7.5
Hi, our DBA is running into problems after upgrading from 7.3 to 7.5. When we attempt to start the DB we get this error:

As said, he performed the upgrade and now we can't start the DB, anybody that had the same issue?
We run on AIX 5.3 and from the unix side, nothing changed. After 7.5 we plan on going to 7.6 but that is in the stars I guess...
We posted a high message with SAP and since over 10 hours nobody picked the message up... we are getting kind of desperate... Any pointers are appreciated...
thanksHello Thomas,
-> If you run the database update using the database update tool, the permissions/ownership will be set correctly for the database software & the permissions/ownership of the database log files will be also changed correctly.
Please check the upgrade log in the /sapdb/data/wrk
-> Please check the ownership of the files in the database RUNDIRECTORY.
For example, if the database owner:group of your database is sdb:sdba, then
-rw-rw---- 1 sdb sdba u2026. knltrace
-> Please update the thread with the output of the following commands :
sdbregview -l
xinstinfo SD3
id sdb
ls -l <runditectory>
< rundirectory is the database parameter value and by default is /sapdb/data/wrk/SD3 >
more /etc/opt/sdb
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina -
I updated from OSX leopard to snow leopard. When clicking on links to open new tabs or windows firefox seems to be activing a certain sound. The sound is exactly like the one used to indicate a snap shot of the screen has been taken. But as far as I can tell no picture is being taken, only that sound is being produced with every new tab or window generated by clicking on links. The sound is very annoying.
Disabling all ad-ons seems to get rid of the issue. After enabling the ad-ons one by one, the only one left to be enabled is iPhotoPhotocast 7.0. I believe this was causing the issue.

Bus/io errors after resume from suspend to ram
Something very strange happened today. When I woke my computer out of suspend today, the BIOS made a bad beep sound (once, high pitched, the error kind of), but booted anyways.
After starting up, I tried starting programs like sonata, gnome-mplayer, but both failed with either an "io error" or "bus error". Strangly, I also tested "df" an it worked.
That happened the first time, but I'm worried it's gonna happen again, because I have NO idea what could have failed.
pm-suspend log looks fine

Any other useful log files to check out?
I just put the system to sleep and woke it up again, no problem. I only notice that yesterday it took way longer than usual to go into sleep mode. Except for funky graphic patterns, all worked flawlessy now.
What could cause bus and io errors after wakeup?
Last edited by Sadface (2010-03-27 10:55:35)Yes, im using systemd. I tried also downgrading xf86-video-intel to a version from some weeks ago, with no result.
PS: no difference between systemclt suspend or pm-suspend from comand line.ùù
PS2: I tried fluxbox session and there was no flickering, so it had to be something kde-session related, and I found it: it was the image pile xscreensaver, just switching to another one solved my problem.
Thanks for your interest, wonderwoofy!
Update: nothing solved, it was just temporarly by case... same issue as before...

[SOLVED]Keyboard and touchpad doesn't work after reboot from Arch
Excuse me, but i'm a newbie. I'm not sure if this is an arch problem, but i will just post it here.
I've beening using Arch64 and it works just fine. However, every time i reboot from arch into Windows 7 (32bit), the keyboard and touchpad will stop responding just when the Win7 splash screen shows, however the mouse works fine. Then when you shutdown the computer (from win7 now) it will take apparently longer time, and sometimes i have to press the power key 5 seconds to make it shutdown.
It seems the correct way (to reboot from arch to win7) is to shutdown down the computer first and start it again, and everything will work fine.
And rebooting from win7 to win7 or arch to arch or win7 to arch will work fine too.
I'm glad to post extra information, but I've got no clue and i'm not sure what to put here.
The laptop is a Lenovo Y450 with Intel Core Dual P7540, 4G Memory, NV GT240M. Kernel version of Arch is 3.0.6 (but the problem existed long since earlier versions) I don't have a swap partition. If you need extra information, please mention the item.
Thanks a lot!

That is indeed strange. Since your external mouse works fine (which probably is connected via USB, right?) it appears that the problem lies somewhere around the internal keyboard/touchpad access. I'm not sure how this works with a Lenovo Y450, but just try to enter BIOS (in case you have not been there, you probably have to hit F1 or F2 during startup - less likely it would be delete or escape ...) and look for your keyboard/touchpad options.
You should probably find something like "... legacy support ...". This is a relic from PS/2 times and emulates your internal input devices as PS/2 devices. So - when found, just change the setting (you cannot mess anything up, and both systems will probably not even pop up a message). My guess is it is set to "enabled" and Arch somehow messes with the PS/2 emulation in your case .... so just turn it off.
good luck
