OSX Lion won't connect to PS3/Xbox - ethernet

My Macbook Pro with Lion isn't connecting to my PS3 or Xbox via ethernet. I want to be able to stream files and share my WiFi connection. I've enabled the appropriate sharing settings.
When hooked to my PS3, when I do a 'test' connection thing the ethernet connection on my Mac displays the ethernet as 'disconnected' and then the PS3 can't assign an IP. On the Xbox, it doesn't seem to disconnect the ethernet, but it always fails during a test.
I know it isn't my consoles as my friend connected his PC to them okay.
I know it should be just plug and play, which is why I'm a bit confused. My Mac is connected to a weird WiFi connection (the university's - 'enterprise', or something) but I don't see why that would make a difference in just making a simple connection.
Any advice, suggestions, anything?

Nothing?  This is driving me insane.   I've scoured Google and an apparent fix is editing bootpd.plist after sharing is turned on, but no such file is created on my Mac (in etc or tmp).
Someone help, please!

  • Why Lion won't connect to Non Apple Timemachine servers via AFP...

so far. Take a look at this. It may go a long way to help folk understand why it's broken.
I wholeheartedly atribute this to a chap on trick77.com but I can confirm that my set up...
HP Proliant 4 x 1 TB drives runing Ubuntu 8.04.2 with 4 shares for my Mac stuff under 'afp' and 1 share under 'smb' ,so my wifes Windows work laptop can be backed up. Since update to Lion on main Mini no Time Machine.
I tried adding the line......uams_dhx_2_passwd.so......in Webmin but it did't work. I am sure a fix will be out soon so for time being I just back up important stuff either to good old cheap DVD discs and a USB drive.

AFP network connections to many Linux-based NAS units aren’t working in Mac OS X Lion 10.7 developer preview. After hitting the connect button a message pops up saying:
The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem.
The Time Machine backup feature present in many NAS obviously isn’t working as well because it’s based on AFP too.
You may say that this is a developer preview, things will change for the final release. That’s obviously true. Source say that this connection problem most likely has to do with Apple discontinuing support for DHCAST128 (or DHX) authentication in Lion because it was considered insecure. Instead, the successor of DHCAST128 should be used: the more secure DHX2 user authentication module. DHX2 is supported since Mac OS X 10.2 and supports up to 256 characters for passwords (**** yeah, that should be enough). It relies on CAST-128 in cipher block chaining mode for encryption.
I checked my QNAP NAS for available afpd/netatalk UAMs and DHX2 isn’t present, so it most likely wouldn’t work with Lion.
Well, if it weren’t for Time Machine, I could always resort to SMB.
    [/usr/local/etc/netatalk/uams] # ls -ladrwxr-xr-x
    1024 Jan 31 23:08 ./drwxr-xr-x
    1024 Feb 25 20:14 ../lrwxrwxrwx
    14 Feb 25  2011 uams_clrtxt.so -> uams_passwd.so*lrwxrwxrwx
    18 Feb 25  2011 uams_dhx.so -> uams_dhx_passwd.so*-rwxr-xr-x
    10959 Jan 31 23:08 uams_dhx_passwd.so*-rwxr-xr-x
    5304 Jan 31 23:08 uams_guest.so*-rwxr-xr-x
    6996 Jan 31 23:08 uams_passwd.so*
AFP authentication might work if a uams_dhx_2_passwd.so authentication module was present and configured. It may not be a bad idea to raise this issue with your NAS vendor if you plan to use Lion in the near future.
Rumor has it that some NAS vendors intentionally disable DHX2 in netatalk because it’s a lot more CPU intensive. This could lead to longer login times when accessing AFP shares on NAS’ units with slow CPUs.
Update 2-26-2011: It has been verified that Lion is able to connect to a Linux host running netatalk 2.1.2 supporting the DHX2 UAM in afpd.
Update 7-15-2011: See Time Machine support in OS X Lion 10.7.

Now we also have to wait for 'Netatalk' stable release to be outed as that should resolve the Ubuntu via Webmin picture..(we hope).
I tried different work arounds and have reset them all back to what they were and will just have to wait for Apple to address this. Hope this snippet
    gives a little clarity
    Cheers,

    Hi Slammer,
I don't have a Qnap. The info between both == signs is to give an understanding of what’s going on.
Myself I have a HP Proliant 4 x 1 TB drives running Ubuntu 8.04.2 with 4shares for my Mac stuff under 'afp' and 1 share under 'smb', so my wife’s Windows work laptop can be backed up.
Now I have got all my connectivity back by using the terminal commands whichis now well documented but here is a good place if doing it on Lion as shown byMember 'ctendell'...
    http://charlestendell.com/os-x-lion-afp-nas-connection-error-fix/
I can now see my server and everything on it but still no Time Machine backups because you need Netatalk 2.2 to be loaded on the server in my case and millions of others into Ubuntu.
(The version I am sporting at present is Netatalk 2.03).  This I can do by using Webmin and will do it after the update to Lion due shortly. I could do it now, but I won't.
I should never have updated to Lion, and do what I have always done, and that was wait until at least 3-4 updates have taken place and review all the discussions on this forum to see if issues have been resolved.
With regards to DH....Things may have been fixed in the next update which has been seeded and a selectable choice option to use the prior DH....over the new version may be on the cards. The Netatalk latest version is still in beta format though it can be used and has been implemented by NAS manufacturers, but as I understand its due to become  'stable' and no longer in 'beta mode'.
I dare say that S.Jobs will not want to alienate a huge group so a fix will be the right thing to do but given the mountain of cash they have and most of the revenue coming from iPhones, iPads etc, they may decide not to and of course that means 3rd party fixes.
Patience is a virtue but Apple sometimes sorely tests it.
    Cheers

  • OSX Mavericks won't connect to Wifi automatically after recent (security) patch.

After the recent OSX Mavericks software update I am having wifi connectivity issues. My MBP (retina) won't connect to my preferred wifi automatically and I have to do it manually. Am I the only one having issues after the update and are there any fixes?

I am also having the same behavior, after updating to 10.9.3 WIFI won't reconnect.
I have to turn-off wifi, then turn-on wifi to get connected.

  • Mac OSX lion does not connect to wifi automatically

    Hi there
My mac osx lion does not connct to wifi automatically , or when i open the lid it doesn't connect either...
could you please help me with this problem?

    Bump
is there anyone else with a Mountain Lion Mac and a TP-Link TL-WDR4300? I am almost sure that it's this combination that doesn't work. All other devices I have (Apple and non-Apple) can work perfectly on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, but the settings on the WiFi adapter on the Mac are the same for all Wireless networks, so I just don't get why it would work on 5Ghz but not on 2.4Ghz...

  • OSX Lion won't boot after Bootcamp installation interrupted

Hello, I started a Bootcamp installation on my OSX Lion Mac Pro. Once I realized that I could only use Windows 7, I had to hold off on the installation until I located my Windows 7 disk. I had set the Bootcamp partition size to 100 GB on a 500 GB Drive. Due to threatning weather, I shutdown the computer.
Now the OSX Lion does not boot! I have been reading much information on this topic to see about fixing the problem. I talked to Apple Support and so far it is still not working. I was able to boot using the recovery partition "Disk Utility -> First Aid -> Repair Disk". When I ran Repair Disk there were some errors reported and repaired, then OSX still not booting. I installed Lion on another drive using recovery and that works OK. I was hoping to install Lion on the original drive and still not disturb my data files like music, photos, etc. That volume with OSX is greyed out and does not mount. I am thinking that the GPT had been modified and since Windows was not installed on Bootcamp, there is no way to boot on the original drive /dev/disk2. I read about a backup GPT, so I am wondering if I can use the backup GPT to fix the boot problem.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    David

Thanks for the fast reply. Ill try this again. Did this the first time, but wouldn't boot again. I've since done a,fresh install of Lion, and it created the proper recovery partition. I didn't have this before, because I cloned my old drive, when I upgraded to an SSD drive. Didn't know about the recover partition. Ill try again, and see if I can get it to work.
Just need to figure out the driver situation, with my Nvidia Quadro Mac video. Not worth trying again, if I have to use default generic video drivers.

  • Macbook Air (Lion) won't connect to Airport Express (and won't remember network)

My new Macbook Air 13, with Lion, will not connect to my Airport Express.  It throws the following error:  "A connection timeout occured"
This Airport Express is setup as a bridge.  So it extends my wireless router.
The new Macbook air sees this setup as 2 seperate WIFI networks.  It will connect to one (the router), but will not connect to the other one (the airport).  It will then not remember the router, so each time it restarts or wakes from sleep, I have to manually reconnect to the correct one.
For reference.  I have 4 other wifi devices in this household.  A win 7 laptop, an IPad 2, an iphone, and a Macbook pro with Leopard.  All 4 of them are working as intended.  They see one wifi network, connect to it (and move between the two points as necessary), and they remember their connections.
    Any thoughts or advice?

Glad it's not just me. I have D-Link and TP-Link routers set up in the same or a similar way. My iPads, iPods and Windows laptops all show a single SSID and switch between them happily. My new 13" Air was showing two networks (2 SSIDs) and wireless was patchy at best. I changed one router to be N only and that improved things somewhat, but still loosing the network. In order to see which router was being used I altered the SSID of one. The "N-only" router is giving the best coverage with a strong signal - but then it just drops out and the wireless icon shows "Searching". Turning wifi off then back on fixes the connection.
When it comes to internet browsing my iPad 2 is significantly faster than the Air.
I'm also having trouble keeping or attaining connections to my Windows shares, drop-out, even when I still have internet connectivity.

  • OSX Lion won't download?

    Hi All!
I have two Macs, one Mac mini which is up to date running OSX Mavericks, great.
The other is a Mac Pro, running OSX Snow Leopard which I'd like to upgrade to Mavericks, ultimately.
The Mac Pro is an 8 core, Intel Xeon processor with 24GB of ram so it meets spec requirements as far as I can make out when I checked with Apple.
Both these Mac's are authorised to the same Apple ID (mine) and they both download updates to software from the app store. They are the only 2 of 5 Mac's I have authorised to my Apple ID. Maybe it's worth mentioning that they are in two seperate locations, Mac Mini at home, Mac Pro at the office.
When I try to download OSX Lion on the Mac Pro it asks for my Apple ID password which gets accepted, then the icon flies to the dock. When I mouse over the icon it says 'Downloading' but does nothing else. After 15 minutes or so the icon occasionally dissapears.
    What's going on? Please help!
    Thanks,
    Ian

  • Airport Express won't connect to Extreme by ethernet

    Hi,
    Here is my setup:
    a) Airport Extreme (802.11n 2nd gen) connected by ethernet to cable modem
    b) Airport Express #1 setup to wirelessly extend network
This has worked fine for quite some time.
Now, what I tried to is add a 2nd Airport Express via ethernet, so
    the new setup is:
    1) cable modem via ethernet to Airport Extreme
    2) ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to D-Link 8 port gigabit switch
    3) ethernet from switch to several devices (Tivo, GoogleTV,etc) and also to an in-wall ethernet connection to another part of my house
    4) ethernet from that in-wall ethernet to another D-Link switch
    5) ethernet from that other switch to printer (currently works fine) and to Airport Express #2
    6) Airport Express #1 still connected wirelessly
Problem: Airport Express #2 will not connect.  Won't show up in Airport Utility.  Nothing.
I have tried several factory resets.
After many tries, I finally tried connecting it wirelessly.  This worked, and I was able to see AEX#2 in the Airport Utility.  But, when I then tried to connect it by ethernet, it shut down my entire network.  I can not anywhere find step by step instructions on how to connect the AEX by ethernet to the Extreme.
I have reviewed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145 but find no help there.
Looking forward to some great help.
    - Blue

If I switch Express#2 (the one I would lilke to connect by ethernet) to "create" a network, with the same SSID and PW, then I can only see Express#2 in the utility and the Extreme and Express#1 dissappear.
As soon as you set the Express #2 to "Create a wireless network, the setting for Connection Sharing will change from Bridge Mode to Share a public IP address. That is likely what is throwing you off.
Setup Express #2 to "Create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, same wireless security and same password.
The next...and last....and critical....step before you click Update must be to change the setting for Connection Sharing from Share a public IP address to Off (Bridge Mode).
Now click Update and wait for a green light on Express #2.
Then, you have to power cycle the entire network.
Power off everything in any order you want.
    Wait a minute
Start the modem first and let it run a minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    Then the switch, etc.
You get the idea....keep starting devices one at a time until the entire network is back up.
Now all the AirPorts will be on the same subnet and visible in AirPort Utility.

  • Osx lion cannot establish connection to laserjet cp1025nw

I have a new LaserJet CP1025nw. After working a couple of times I get an error message (it just says 'error') when I try to print. If I open the HP Utility the device is listed  but no details of device information are displayed. If I switch off and on the printer,  details of the device information appear, but then if I go to 'all settings' 'information and support' I get a message that the computer cannont establish a connection with the printer. It feels like connection is only established  briefly when the printer is first switched on. Connection is via ethernet. The lights on the back of the printer show the connection is OK, and I have tried changing the cable.

Did all this twice with considerable hassle. Firmware update programme would hang. Only responded when I turned printer off and on before launching it. There are some changes in behaviour. If I try to print, I get an message that just says 'error', without referrring to the driver. The HP utility is able to report device information. At what point can I say this is broken? The amount of time I have spent trying to make it work with Lion is quite inordinate (compared with less than a minute to install my old Epson C65. My options now are to (a) return it to the vendor, always difficult with an issue of this type. Or (b) smash it to pieces with a large rock to stop me wasting any more time on it. Thanks

  • After bootcamp, OSX Lion won't boot.

I tried to create a bootcamp partition on my 2009 8 core Mac Pro. I run the bootcamp utility, it partitions the desired drive (tried partitioning my SSD main drive, and also a spare 7200 rmp internal drive). It partitions, then shuts down. It boots to the windows loader, tells me my bootcamp drive isn't able to install windows. So I reformat the drive (inside the windows loader). Does its thing, and loads windows.
Windows starts, I can play around in it. I use the DVD that was created (has the Apple windows drivers). Once that installs, screen goes blank. I can tell its trying to do something. I have a Quadro 4000 Mac video card, and after cleaning the drive, I work my way to this step again, except I went to Nvidia's website, download and install drivers. Same thing happens. That's issue 1, inside of windows.
The main issue, my Mac Pro will no longer boot to Lion. I hold option, brings up the boot drive option. I choose my Mac OSX drive, then it does nothing. I end up having to erase the drive and reload OSX, and use time machine to put back to normal.
Windows works just fine with parralels, but my intention was to bootcamp, then direct parralels to use the bootcamp for virtual machine.
Every time I've gone to reload the osx, I've reformatted the windows drive, because once I tried installing drivers, I never could get a picture on my monitors. If I clicked the mouse buttons, the pointer would show on occasion, then disappear.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • After adding password to router, Mountain Lion won't connect

I added a 128-bit WEP* password to my FiOS router today. As soon as I did so, my iPhone and iPad both prompted me for the password. Mountian Lion wouldn't. It claims to be connected to the router, and acknowledges that it's password protected with a lock icon in the menu bar WiFi menu. But it never prompted me for the password and as a result it can't connect to anything.  What I've tried:
    * Turning WiFi off and on.
    * Rebooting
    * Ensuring there is no password saved in Keychain
    * Deleting the "remembered" WiFi spot in System Preferences->Network->WiFi->Advanced
    * Testing the Mac on a different WiFi network (it works fine).
    * "Join Other Network" where I entered the network by name and its password. The Mac said it could not find that network.
So basically I'm stuck. If the Mac doesn't prompt for the password, I can't force it to take it.
    Thanks for any help,
    -K
    * Oh, and before you ask why I used WEP and not WPA2, the latter did not appear as a choice in the FiOS router setup. It was WEP or nothing. Ask Verizon why they prefer lesser security. ;-)

  • OSX Lion won't let me log in

Ok sorry everyone, I've been searching all day for answers on all forums everywhere! I'm baffled and I really need your help.
Most threads seem to be written last year, surely there is a now a common standard in how to fix Lion hanging after restart.
    So here's my timeline:
On my MacMini 2010 320Gb - Just upgraded to Lion last night from Snow Leopard (a moment of madness worrying about iCloud, thinking to get a head start).
    Installation ticks along as normal.
All looks well and asks for a restart.
After restart, the screen hangs on dark grey screen and cursor becomes the pinwheel.
So, did Recovery boot, reinstalled Lion - nope, still hangs.
Repeat, then did Disk Utility, Mac is verified, all my files are there, can only do another Install, nope still hangs.
Right, reset PRAM (could help maybe?), then Safe Boot, Hooray!
Wait, can only get into my secondary log-in account, not my Primary, it just hangs on the pinwheel.
When in the secondary account I cannot see my MacHD drive (because it's in Safe mode?)
No little about Verbose mode, anything to sniff out files I need to be walked through step by step.
    Please help me someone!
    Cheers.

Wow, three applications? And I feel confident in saying that none of them were able to completely rid you of that Trojan.
With Flashback variants A-N (at last count) some of which install at least two types of Trojan, not even three A-V vendors will guarantee you that they were able to eliminate all of it.
That's why the advise given here from the time it was first discovered is to (courtesy of Linc Davis):
You need to take the following steps immediately:
    1. Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Boot from your installation disc, launch Disk Utility, and erase the internal drive.
    3. Reinstall the Mac OS.
    4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process. Import from your backuponly user data and settings, not applications or other files.
    5. Run Software Update.
    6. Change every Internet password you have. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions.
    7. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated.
    8. Learn safe computing practices.
If you are unable to do that and know which variant of Flashback you were infected by, I may be able to help you avoid reinstalling it.
And some tips for avoiding future infection, since it would appear it's going to be with us for awhile (courtesy of magmatic.com):
Mitigation 1: Disable "Open Safe Files.." In Safari->Preferences->General.
Mitigation 2: ONLY DOWNLOAD FLASH FROM http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Mitigation 3: Disable Java or manage the Preferences. http://www.magmatic.com/apple-security-muse/2012/2/23/java-hardening-tips.html
