OSX Tiger wont install on iMac G5  17" (2006)

hi all
I am trying to update my bosses' iMac G5 from OSX 10.3 to OSX Tiger 10.4.7 and it's hanging up at restart up with Garbled error text. Some of the text appeared in Japanese. Is this a firmware or Apple hardware issue? My boss does have the installer Disk 1&2. What can it be?
Thanks
Jim

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).
Also check this web store http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521

  • OSX Tiger 15" install disk on a 12"?

I just got a new computer and its the 15" (old style but happy). Anyway, can I use the 15" OSX disk which has Tiger on my older (but still very cute although envying John Holmes 12")? The install disk says its for the 15" and the 17".

    Diane:
OS install disks are computer specific and if it is still on one computer it is a violation of the license agreement to install it on another computer, assuming it can be installed. You will need to get a Full Retail Version of Tiger. Try AppleRescue
    Good luck.

  • Harddrive from a powerbook g4 17  into a powerbook g4 1.33 ghz with OSX Tiger already installed.

    Hi,
    Quick question.
    I have put a harddrive from a powerbook g4 17  into a powerbook g4 1.33 ghz with Tigeralready installed.
Was this and is this a bad idea or is it ok if I just check/repairpermisions or wil this cause lots of problems and I should reinstall OSX?
I know with windows this would never work but I don’t knowif OSX really controls how the mac runs of if its just the firmware alreadythere.
First boot it worked and I was in Tiger for about 5 min but then I added ram and it just try’s to boot into OSX now but after 20min of waiting I reset the powerbook.
    thanks.

thanks, I think your correct normnod but Im not sure if it includes updates and if they are machine Specific.
It was from 17 inch 1.67ghz to a 12 inch 867Mhz and like a say it boot the first time but now I get a small
blip sound when I press the power button and no dong sound so maybe I did mess something up.
I did try pulling the battery and using shift > control > option andpower and I got no boot and blank screen again
(this is model A1010) sorry its wrong title.
and then the second time I got fan sound a dvd rom drive running but nothing on the screen and again no dong.
seeing if leaving it without its battery overnight will help by resetting everything.
I might have apple jack installed on the harddrive already if thet will help? but i still need a dong to get into that.

  • OSX Maverick WONT INSTALL!

I have downloaded OSX Maverick but when i try to install it it says  "Update requires version osx 10.9''. Isn't Maverick 10.9?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have downloaded OS X 10.9.1 from the Apple website, and that's an OS X 10.9 update.
Instead, you need to open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks from there. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the OS X Mavericks installer will appear, so follow the steps. You will have OS X 10.9.1 after upgrading

  • Macbook: OSX tiger re-install problems

Just got my replacement OSX install DVD's today and am having some issues installing the OS. Basically what happened was I blew away my HD and then was un-pleasantly surprised to find out the burnt back ups of the org. install disks that I had lost in a move wouldnt work, which resulted in a macbook that when booted simply displayed a folder icon w/ a question mark.
So now that I have My replacements, I have been trying to install but when I get to where you select which volume to install on, I am not able to select the HD. I see it, but Im not able to install on it. I have tried holding down the "C" key when starting up and also the "option" key. Both methods have the same result.
Anyone got any ideas? Any helps is most appreciated.
    Regards,
    John

    hi John,
Did you try with your new install DVD's Disk Utility
(Utilities Menu as soon as you get it during first install steps),
    to run a Disk Repair?
Check also what Partition Scheme it has. It's GUID Partition Table for Intel Macs. In case your's formatted for PPC Macs,
reformat your new drive then (still Mac OS Extended Journaled though).

  • OSX Server wont install from clean boot

    Hello
I cannot get my Mac Mini to install osx server 10.5.4 straight of the DVD.
Only way i got it working was by installing normal leopard and then running the upgrade from within.
Please can i be told to how to install straight of the disk?
(When i try normally, it just reboots into osx/or gets stuck in a reboot loop?

In this case, you will have to have [whatever version of Mac OS X client is appropriate for this particular box|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159] installed or reinstalled, then start the installation of Mac OS X Server per [HT3479|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479]
If you've an unbootable installation on your disk as is likely the case here, use Disk Utility in the installer to erase the disk, and then roll in the backup you made prior to starting the installation of Mac OS X Server or roll in the Mac OS X client software from the DVD that came with the box, and then follow the steps defined in [HT3479|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479].
As for the proposed sequence, you likely won't need to update the 10.5 Mac OS X software here (once that software is reinstalled or reloaded or installed onto the box), and can probably go straight to the Mac OS X Server installation, and can then update Mac OS X Server to current.

  • OSX update wont install

The new OSX update (10.6.6) would not finishing "writing" files even if i leave the MacBook Pro running for days.!!
    what shall I do.?

    Details in the following.
Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html
If you only have a Time Machine backup, ensure that you can reliably restore it to another disk/volume/partition before updating/upgrading.

  • Mac OSX Panther wont install

all my tech stuff is write my computer meets the requirements but it has an error and it says "not reconizable startup disk"

    ClassickRocker:
To check the Volume Format you can go to the Apple Menu and select about this Mac. Click the More Info button. This will open the Apple System Profiler. In the left column click on ATA under Hardware. The specs will show up in the main panel. File System should be HFS+.
To format your HDD/Partition in Mac OS Extended (HFS+) boot from the installer disk, Go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel and the Partition tab in the main panel. Volume Format should be set at Mac OS Extended (which is the same as HFS+). You should also check the checkbox to Install Mac OS 9 Drivers. You can set the partition(s) (most users prefer a single partition on an internal HDD), name them select the Volume Format etc. for each and click partition. If your HDD is already formatted in Mac OS Extended and Mac OS 9 drivers are installed, do nothing.
    Good luck.

  • OSX Software wont install on MB pro after crash

I have a macbook pro that crashed. This happened once before about 6 months ago and i replaced the drive. This time i ran DU and it repaired drive. I also ran Drive Genius 2 and it said there was nothing wrong with the drive but i can not install my OS. I tried to install both Snow Leopard as well as Lion and they keep stopping part way through saying there were errors.
Im thinking it is still the drive but does anyone have any ideas?

If you boot from your Snow Leopard disc and run Disk Utility, is your drive still coming up with errors when you try to Verify disk? Most OS X installers check the reliability of the internal (or external) disk that you're installing the OS on. If the drive doesn't pass the test, you'll usually get an error message.
Try verifying and repairing the disk again before proceeding with install. If you come up with errors again the disk may just be bad.

  • OSX tiger wont boot up, Help me please anyone!

Well this morning i was talking on the phone and all of a sudden my comp went blkank and my phone died so i'm thinking i had a surge of some sort and now when I try to boot up my comp I get the grey screen and the apple icon and then it goes to blue and the OSX startup bar loads , but then it just sits there on blue screen with my cursor working. I tried the commandoption+PR startup but that didn't work and then I tried restting the SPU or whatever by unplugging power and holding the power button hwile plugging in but that didnt work iether so any helop would be tremendously appreciated, I am a student with tons of projects do so, please.

Hi, RIDAHwon. Likewise, welcome to the Discussions.
    1. After a power outage or surge like this, the first thing to do is assure there was no hardware damage. Run the a href="http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html">Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mac.
Since you have a desktop Mac, I recommend you seriously consider investing in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
    2. If the Apple Hardware Test fails, you should have the machine serviced before proceeding further. If the Apple Hardware Test returns a clean bill of health, then:• If your Home folder is protected with FileVault, try the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: FileVault - How to verify or repair a home directory image."
    • Otherwise, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.3. If the blue screen issue still remains, the outage/surge may have corrupted a Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

  • Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install tiger discs version 10.4.10. Is it safe to downgrade or not please help

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:

      L2 Cache:

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
