i was wondering if there was a way to see the text in
text boxes in other programs when the user has their
mouse over it or just any text box in general. i am
trying to make a program that uncovers the asterisks
in a password but i am stuck on how to do this. is
there a class in the java api that does this? if
anyone could help or give me a website address that
could help id greatly appreciate itTake a look at the implementation, there isn't ever anything other than asterisks echo'ed into a password textbox--the password never makes it into the box, so there isn't anything to "uncover".
i would also like to be able to read the keys that the
user types while my program is running in the back

does anybody kknow of a way to do this?We used to do this with a hook into the keyboard driver--interupt chain--in assembler and C. You can also do it by peeking into the system event queue. In any case you are not going to do it with Java, but you can set up JNI to read from a dll you develop in Assembler/C to do what you want.

Firefox regularly hangs after an unspecified period of use, and causes other programs to hang, and a forced system shutdown is necessary.

The firefox browser hangs after an unspecified period of time. Anything from a few minutes after system startup, up to 5-6 hours of use or perhaps more. Attempting to use other programs including windows explorer while firefox is hanging causes those programs to hang also, making a forced shutdown necessary. Occaisionally I've noticed firefox will respond, perhaps after 10 or more minutes. There seems to be no hard disk activity while the program hangs. Memory usage of firefox on my system is usually upwards of 190,000.

I have circumvented this mostly by running internet explorer, and using Firefox only for browsing when I need to make use of it's addons. In this way I've had the problem re-occur maybe once or twice in the past two weeks. It's not really a solution but it does seem to help, and I'm no longer sure the problem IS firefox but using it certainly exacerbates the problem.
I've only just updated to firefox 6, so I am not entirely sure how that will go just yet.

How to Load Photoshop 5.0 LE & other programs on PC with Windows 7?

I have had such a problem, but found the answer in here. Where there might be another
way that works at times, the only way I found was given by Financetech back in 2011.
His answer was the following:
"you can copy across an old XP installation.
On an XP machine copy the Photoshop 5.0 LE program folder from C:\Program\Adobe onto a USB stick. Then also copy the all the DLLs from C:\Windows (there are usually 6 or so), and also copy pcdlib32.dll from C:\Windows\system32.
On the Windows 7 machine copy the Photoshop 5.0 LE folder from the USB stick across to C;\Program Files and also drop all the DLLs into the Photoshop folder.
On the Windows 7 machine in the Photoshop folder right click on photosle.exe and choose Properties -
Compatibility tab and then choose "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (service pack 3).

Well, after trying several other methods I had found, this one was the only way it worked. BUT .... it also worked
well on a program that was designed to be used in Windows for Workgroups, 3.11. Long before Win 95 came around.
That was the last 16 bit OS of Windows where a user had absolute control over his computer. DOS was NOT
inside Windows as it is today. DOS (being Disk Operating System that makes a PC work) was a separate loaded
program before Windows was installed. One could even fix his computer by going to DOS if his PC crashed and
would not let it open. In DOS the PC could be 'fixed'. Even some of the garbage that MS puts in their OS's could
be removed without causing harm to the OS. Today, if Windows doesn't come up, neither will the DOS.
Anyway, that old 16 bit program did load, and does work now in Windows 7 using the above method. Since XP was
a 32 bit OS, many 16 bit applications would load in it. Not all, but many. So, if your 16 bit program will load into
Win 95, 98, 2000, and XP, you can load it in Win 7.
I copied the instructions to keep on hand in a file so that I will be able to help others who do not get into this forum.
(Maybe also due to the fact that I forget a lot these days.)

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

Regarding the script error, if I'm reading the script correctly, it is related to accessing your Flash cookies directory. It seems the publisher's support forum is not currently available for searching, but that might be a good next step.
In the meantime, could you check whether the script has the correct location for your Flash cookies directory? If you can't access Tool > BetterPrivacy, you could check here:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''bpr''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) There should be a bolded setting named '''extensions.bprivacy.DataDir''' which looks approximately like the following:

Do you have a similar value? If you paste the path used by BetterPrivacy into a Windows Explorer window, does it open? Also, click a couple levels in the folder, can you see:
Flash Player \ #SharedObjects
If the value is wrong, right-click the wrong value and choose Reset. BetterPrivacy should update the value the next time you try to access it.
If the value is blank, you could try inserting a sensible value and see whether that helps.

When this happens, please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and see how much RAM and CPU Firefox is using. If they're sky high, then... Well, that kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
#run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
#update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
#enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
#do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
#disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix you issues with Firefox, proceed;
#check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

That is because whoever programmed the web site used Internet Explorer extentions. These will only run in Internet Explorer. So, use a computer with Windows to use that web site.

Thanks for the help. I installed CC and it fixed everything but Photoshop. I guess I will have to use my old laptop for images until Adobe fixes the problem. Do you know of a place where we can send issues like these to Adobe?

How to close Internet Explorer and other programs running on Windows?

In order for Flash Player to be installed or updated, any programs that use Flash Player must be closed. This includes Internet Explorer or other browsers, instant messengers, Skype, etc.
These programs may be running in the background, not as visible windows, but need to be closed anyway.
To close such programs use the Windows Task Manager. To start Task Manager, take any of the following actions:
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
Right-click an empty area of the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.
Once the Task Manager is running, select the Processes tab. On older Windows version you may need to click on the Process Name or Image Name header to sort the process names.
Now right-click on every process that the Flash Player installer needs to close (e.g. iexplore.exe), then select End Process.

I bought the Officejet 6500A Plus about one month and have experienced the very same problem. I tried to remedy this problem following suggestions in a number of different posts (static IP, router, firewalls etc), all to no avail. Last week I called support. The support I received by the tech over several hours and different days for a week was very good. However none of his suggestions corrected the connection issue. After today's recommended fix failed, he advised HP is aware of this issue with the 6500 and other affected printers. He claimed HP was working on a firmware upgrade. He did not know when the update would be provided. The tech also claimed HP acknowledged this problem in a written announcement. He agreed to email the announcement to me. I haven't received it. This has been the only problem I've had with the 6500

Finder won't stay selected if other programs open and can't open new window

I have just noticed a new problem. If other programs are open, Finder won't stay selected program. If I alt tab to it or click on it in dock, it shows on menu bar for a half second and goes away. If I right click on icon in dock and select open new window, it will not do so. If I select a folder from the desktop, it opens in Finder with no problem and I can move within the Finder at will.
I have updated all software. I am running the current Macbook Pro 15in. No other problems noted so far.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Stuffit AVR has been a big one, if you have that use the Pref Pane to turn it off, but others have been implicated too. Check System Preferences for a Stuffit Pref Pane and disable AVR.
