Outgoing email alleged to be "SPAM": ominous and serious privacy implications

I attempted to send a link to a friend, and Verizon's software prevented me from sending the message, with a message saying "....the mail server responded 5.7.1...determined to be spam."
By using the old standby workaround--guile, trickery and deceit--I was able to convey the info to my intended recipient.
But as I think about it, it's clear that Verizon must be scanning *every* email a customer sends!  What other method could Verizon be using to determine that a messge is objectionable, other than scanning the message?  And if Verizon is doing that, what is it doing with that information?  Is it reporting the info to someone, like CIA or NSA?
Now I'm wondering:  does Verizon maintain a list of "bad" addresses?
The fact that Verizon blocked this URL is additional support for something I noticed long ago:  the folks at Verizon are not too bright. First of all, the target URL contains innocuous, unoffensive information  But even more significant, how could I be attempting to spam someone if I'm sending my message to ONE individual--and at that, an individual who;s a friend, and to whom I've sent hundreds of messages?
(Nor was it easy to find this forum!  But I can see why Verizon would want to keep customers from complaining, when other customers could see that info.)
These Verizon folks are so dumb (this is not the first problem I've had with Verizon) I'm gonna start looking around for  an ISP that's not a "legacy" company, as Verizon is.

Turtles:
Yes, I'm aware that gazillions of emails are sent daily.  It's also clear that Verizon has software (not humans) that *does* analyze messages you send--I've had the experience a few times now of trying to send innocuous, clearly non-spam messages that Verizon refused to send.
I got around it by finding the part of the message (as I recall, always a URL) that Verizon did not like and altering it in one way or another.
And the dangers are *real*, not imaginary, as you believe.  Clearly, humans have to be involved, and both humans and machines must cope with an extremely large numbero f emails, and "suspects".  We know for a certainty that the . phone companies have coopoerated with CIA and NSA, even without those agencies having to present warrants for their snooping.  And it's equally clear that it's done by computer.  No doubt NSA takes "suspicious" or otherwise flagged messages and looks at, for example, the sender and recipient, and adds those names to a database.
I would guess that the messages sit in the database until there is a sufficient level of activity to warrant raising an alarm, e.g. a sufficient number of messages to some individual on a watch list.  Then---if I were managing a NSA or CIA effort that examined emails--I would have the software kick out a list of "names to be followed up on", with priorities attached.
I personally am not worried, because anyone reading my messages will go bonkers with boredom in a short period of time.  But clearly the potential exists.  And if you doubt me, then clearly you are not aware of recent US history, e.g. various efforts the Army, FBI, and other agencies mounted decades ago (even opening snailmail!)in which innocent individuals had their privacy seriously invaded, illegally.  I would be happy to give you more details if you wish--details that are a matter of public record.

As stated in the Spam FAQ page, you will not get any response when sending the message to [email protected] for review. You attach the message that you are unable to send, and they review it. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the filter will either be updated to allow the content that was previously blocked, or it will be determined to be a legitimate block and no changes will be made.
Some troubleshooting steps you can try:
If you have a signature, try removing one line at a time from it and attempting to send the message again. Some signatures look like "ads" to the filters, apparently.
If you are using a pop3 client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) try sending your message from the verizon.net website. If this resolves the issue, then it is something that your client is adding to the message that is causing it to be blocked.
If the Subject line of your message has a whole bunch of "Fwd: Fwd: Re: Fwd:" try removing some of them.
Remove any links/URLs from the email one at a time to isolate if one of them is causing the block.
Some people have suggested sending the message to [email protected] for investigation. This may work for you as well.

For my work I have manuals, certifications or other regulatory docs that I have uploaded either to dropbox or adobe reader apps on my phone because I travel I find more often that I get request for these documents on an email chain and need to add a pdf to it. It seems I have to start a new email from the app the pdf is in as you stated. This defeats the purpose of responding or forwarding. very frustrating and not very professional. Is their an app out there that may help with this situation.

  • Slow Outgoing Email after 10.5.4

Two weeks ago, I downloaded and installed the OS 10.5.4 Upgrade. Since I upgraded, the outgoing email on both my user account and on my wife's user account take between 27 and 37 seconds to go out, even if they are one-word messages with no attachments. I have spoken with my ISP and tried sending an email using Thunderbird. It shoots out a message in about a second - just like Mail used to do, so the ISP isn't at fault! Using Mail, the message does go out - eventually!
Trashing my own mail plist wouldn't account for the fact that this Mail slowdown is global on our Mac.
When I run Activity Monitor with Mail, I see that Mail is trying to handshake with my ISP for most of the time, but when the handshake has been made, the message goes out immediately.
I have no problem receiving email promptly and my Internet upload and download speeds are just fine. I have fixed permissions, but that does nothing.
Everything points an accusing finger at Mail after the 10.5.4 Upgrade.
Before I do an Erase and Install of Leopard, does anybody have a possible solution?

I was also observing an inordinate delay for sending Mail messages, which led me to this thread. Thank you for offering the solution to manually add the DNS addresses to the computer's System Preferences. That did the trick for me.
In my case, I located these two IP addresses (primary and secondary) in my router, which in turn had retrieved them from the ISP as a function of DHCP. I wonder if earlier versions of Apple's O/S populated these values in System Preferences or whether this behavior has more to do with changes (or a bug) in Mail itself.

  • Outgoing Email in SAP with out Mail Client

    Dear All,
We are able to send outbound email from SAP CRM via outgoing Email Activity. I have lotus and outlook installed on my system for testing.
However Business USERS will not have Outlook or Lotus on their systems, they access emails via WEB MAIL. Can they still use outbound Email sending feature from SAP (via outbound Email Activity ).
    Thank you.

    Hi Sweta.
For sending outbound e-mails from SAP, the SAP system only supports integration with Outlook or Lotus Notes.

  • Server outgoing email fails

I have a fresh install of OS X Yosemite, Server 4.0.3 installed. I have a/29 subnet of Static IP's, everything works well except outgoing email. DNS entries are set and propagation time allowed for. Clients can connect and receive from within the server. I.E.    one act to another. The can also receive from the outside world. just cannot send to the outside world..
Relay issue?? my ISP does not require it, however? ..... any ideas would be greatly appreciated... Thank you i advance. (I am familiar with servers. just new to OS X Servers.... Previous experience with Linux and Unix based systems.)

Turns out that configuration files generated by iPhone Configuration Utility 2.1 are not necessarily compatible with iPhone4 -- even when they're compatible with iOS4 on 3GS and 3G.

  • My Mac Mail is showing my outgoing emails as offline

I have been using BT Wifi with FON a nationwide hot spot while my home broadband has been set up. Since I have been using my home broadband (yesterday) my outgoing mail box shows as offline. If i log in to the Hotspot it works fine again. Outgoing email works perfectly on my phone and ipad on the home wifi

Change the name of the computer in the Sharing pane of System Preferences to one that has no spaces, apostrophes, parentheses, or special characters.
If you have a BT Home Hub wireless router or something similar, you may also need to change the computer name in the router's settings as described by vincentfromcork on page 2 of this thread.

  • Receive emails only from anti spam server

iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 Patch 2 (built Jul 14 2004)
    libimta.so 5.2 Patch 2 (built 19:30:12, Jul 14 2004)
I have a Symantec Security Email which is also an anti spam server..all incoming email from outside are supposed to go to this server first before reaching messaging server..the problem is some of the spam emails bypass the anti spam server
My question is could I configure messaging server to only accept emails from the anti spam server and reject email that bypass the server ?
    Thank you

I have the same problem as spams bypass our anti-spam firewall and send to our email server directly.
To solve this trouble, I want to edit entries in the mapping table.
Considering we also have MS Outlook users, would the following mapping tables work for us?
    PORT_ACCESS
! 10.100.100.100 is our anti-spam firewall before the mail server
! this is to enable mails from the anti-spam firewall to get through
    TCP|*|25|10.100.100.100|* $Y
!This is to enable normal MS Outlook users to send emails from port 25
    TCP|*|25|127.0.0.1|* $Y
!This is too, to enable normal MS Outlook users to send emails from port 25
! 10.100.100.200 is our mail server, would this entry be necessary?
    TCP|*|25|10.100.100.200|* $Y
! This is to reject other connections to the mail server's port 25
    TCP|*|25|*|* $NInternet$ access$ not$ permitted
Would it work for my goal?
    Thanks.
    It is iMS5.2.

  • All Outgoing Emails Marked as SPAM

As of today, the primary PC we have used for years for our main .net account has all outgoing email marked as spam and blocked. Even single addressee, no content emails are bounced back as SPAM. I can still receive on the primary PC, and still send from other devices with the same account. I have deleted and re-added the account on the PC to make sure the server and port settings are current to no avail. Any thoughts on what might have happened?

  • Verizon marking my outgoing email as spam; thanks, thanks a lot

Is anyone else as sick as I am of Verizon's "know more than you" "big brotherish" attitude to us customers.
I'm trying to send email (not mass, just one email) to a client, and Verizon marks it as spam.
This is a critical email the customer is expecting.  Couple of links in the emai.
Fios is nice, but not THAT nice if I can't even send a freakin' email... I might as well go back to Earthlink or Cox!  In fairness, about 95% of my outgoing email goes through just fine, but 2-3 times per week, when I send an email to someone, I get the dreaded {word filter avoidance}response from Verizon which says...
and yes, i send the "offending" email off to the {word filter avoidance} genius people at [email protected], but can you contact these ivory tower {word filter avoidance}?  No.
No, the only thing we can do is hope and pray these jerko**s unblock us and let our email get through.
    Verizon, if you're listening...{word filter avoidance}

This is not a personal attack, but your answer “free email solutions” doesn’t fly.
I pay for email service from Verizon. The cost of Verizon e-mail is built in to the dsl service.
Yes, e-mail from Verizon is advertised as a “free” service. However…
You can only get that “free email” if you purchase service.
    And that’s not free.

    First, the good news:
I rarely get spam from the Verizon server (I have 6 accounts/sub-accounts thru Verizon, using outlook express, 1 or 2 spam a month).
    The bad news:
I have enhanced dsl and have been experiencing random spam blocks.
Yes, I took the time to read the spam faqs and dozens of the postings in this forum.
Yes, I have the latest setting for outlook express http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/Internet/fiosinternet/email/setup+and+use/questionsone/...
    Yes, I know the e-mail limits, 100 names per e-mail, 500 e-mails per hour
    https://my.verizon.com/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=vzc_help_policies&id=EmailPolicy
Yes, I have repeatedly sent the same email to [email protected]
I understand the difficulty of filtering spam, but it seems there should be means test that says if I send 1 email to 1 person, that’s probably not spam. After all, if the spam filter is really just a program, then it is using a numerical assessment, and the parameter has been set to ignore this..
Thank you for your time to help, but telling paying customers we don’t really have that good  of service  as we advertise, isn’t a solution, it’s an excuse.
    Respectfully,
    Norm
As a fellow paying customer (note that this is a peer-to-peer forum), I'm not making excuses. I'm stating facts. There are free email offerings that are better than ISP provided email. Period.
If you want to use Verizon's email, that's your choice. If you want to switch to another ISP and use their sub-par email product, that is also your choice.
It just doesn't make sense to me to trade excellent internet for not-as-fantastic internet just to use a "better" email product when there are actual better email products available for free that are not ISP-dependent.
