Output 1080psf 23.98 to DigiBeta 29.97

I encountered a lot of problems trying to output my 1h30 project to DigiBeta.
The project is 1080psf 23.98, using the ProRes422 (HQ) codec, and the source format is HDCAM.
For the sound editing, they need a DigiBeta. So I have to output from my 23.98 project to 29.97.
First, after doing all the rendering and begin the output, FCP launches again another render (though everything, from ''need render'' to ''preview'', is rendered), I guess it is to render the frame convert. If there is a workaround to avoid that, I'd be please to learn it.
Second problem: the frame convert adds a few frames each second (because there are more frames in 29.97 than 23.98), but FCP does NOT change the audio speed. So after 30 minutes, I can notice slight audio sync out, and at the end of the tape it's more than 1 sec off.
This topic is one of the many problems I have dealing with a heavy feature length film project, I don't know how the others are dealing with those problems (sudden crashes, render files getting lost, frame off during output etc.)
Thanks for your help.

Hi there, never posted here before but stumbled across this and thought i should mention...
Most sound post facilities are still running their studios at SD video frame rates (PAL or NTSC) as the equipment used cannot sync to tri-level or "slow-PAL" video ref. ProTools is a good example: at the studio where I work all the sound editorial, playback and recording is done using Pro Tools systems and they can only happily sync to PAL or NTSC video reference. There are also other bits of kit which won't do tri-level or slow PAL so 24fps/23.98fps is not an option. We are capable of running the picture at film rates (24/23.98) while the rest of the studio runs at 25/29.97 using the gearboxing inside our synchroniser but the sound teams that come in to mix usually cut the sound at 25/29.97.
When ALL the equipment being used in post is tri-level savvy then sticking to one frame rate will be an option (and a welcome development!).
Hope this helps

  • Output 4 track audio to Tape

    Hi,
I am trying to find out how to output 4 channels audio to digibeta via sdi from FCP S2... all advice highly recommended...
    thanks!

open your File menu > Audio / Video Settings... window and switch to the Device Control Preset tab
edit your current preset (or a duplicate) and change the Audio Mapping to 4 Channel
now in your sequence, open the Sequence Settings and switch to the Audio Outputs tab
change the Audio Outputs to 4 Channel and the Grouping as required
in the sequence you can assign your tracks to the various output channels by right clicking on or around each track's track lock / auto select icon and assigning from the context menu

  • Capturing Digibeta Via FireWire

Im running FCP 4.5 on an iMac with an external LaCie hard drive.
Can i capture Digibeta footage from a J30 Deck via firewire or will i need to buy a capture card?
Would upgrading to FCP 5 make any difference?
Final product is a showreel to be output as DVD only.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

Don't know the deck. Can it output or do conversion from Digibeta to DV and send it down a firewire connection?
If so, yes FCP will accept the DV via firewire.
If not, you will need an external capture box (the iMac isn't going to take a card) such as a AJA Io to bring the material into your machine. If you want to edit it in it's native format, you are going to need a very fast hard drive as well.
FWIW - The iMac is not a very good choice for uncompressed formats. It has only one firewire bus with no possiblity for adding a second one which is what you will want.

  • General Error 92

We are attempting to output 1080psf 23.98 Apple Pro Res 422(HQ) clips to HDCAM using a Kona LHe card. These files were transcoded from Red R3D files using Log and Transfer. On two clips, we are getting a General Error 92 when we try to perform an assemble edit. I should note, we have set the sequence timecode to match the media start timecode of the clips. That said, we have also changed the sequence timecode back to start at 1:00:00:00 as a test with no success. Another interesting factoid, the source timecode of these clips begins at hour 22 and ends at hour 0. Should that matter? These clips are roughly 93 minutes in length. We have used the Kona deck control cable as well as a Keyspan adapter with no success. The deck we are using is a Sony F500. Our sequence matches the clips and is FULLY rendered. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We did try breaking the clips into shorter lengths with intermittent success. The beginning and ends of the clips seem to work, but the area from about 23:45:00:00 to 00:05:00:00 doesn't seem to work. We have tried modifying the timecode of the clips without success. We have also re-transcoded both clips without success.

  • FC Pro same as Avid?

Why is it that is not possible to get the same video quality output from FC Pro as in a high end Avid? I use Final Cut Pro and work with film and Betacam SP video format, also, I hate Avid but has work some projects with it, none the less the final product is trully broadcast quality, this is not the case with FC Pro...
Is there a thecnical answer for this?
    PowerBook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.67 GHz - 2 GB DDR SDRAM

Is there a thecnical answer for this?
There is indeed - it's because you are wrong.
You are clearly unaware that FCP handles video (or HD or whatever) at any desired quality depending on the hardware you choose to add to a base system. This is exactly the same as an Avid - the software front-end lets the hardware back-end decide what it can handle.
    A. If you have FCP installed on an MacPro (say) and are using a firewire camera or deck to output or monitor, your FCP system will only be able to (directly) output DV quality video - which is fine for offline but certainly not high quality.
It is configured like a 'low end Avid'.
    B. If you add a $300 card and a fast drive to that same setup, you will be able to output full-spec broadcast quality Digibeta quality video. (Just as good as an Avid).
It is now configured like a 'mid-range Avid'.
    C. If you add a $2500 card and a very fast RAID to that system you will be able to produce uncompressed 1920x1080 HD which Hollywood chaps like David Fincher and Angus Wall use to make feature films.
The same system is now configured as a 'high end Avid'.

  • Outputting via SDI to DigiBeta thru Blackmagic Decklink Extreme

I'm running Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 on MacOS 10.4.8. I've edited a 23.98FPS - DVCPro50 sequence. I can preview using the Decklink Extreme card fine. I can output via compenent out to a regular beta deck (UVW-1800) just fine, which is also the deck I use for monitoring while I am editing. I plug the SDI output from the decklink card into our digibeta deck (DVW-A500). I also send the audio over SDI. I see both the audio and video in my digibeta deck. If I just PLAY the sequence out, the digibeta sees and hears it fine. No problems.
This is my problem. Whenever I try to 'edit to tape' it usually starts out fine... then I get A LOT of digital drop outs / squares / digital distortion on the digibeta. They come up randomly and it also digitally distorts the audio when you play the tape back.
The digibeta deck is fine, as we use it to output via our Avid Media Composers every day...no dropouts or problems. It has to be with FCP / DeckLink Card when you try an 'edit to tape'. I've also tried a 'print to video' with the same results. Have you guys heard of this problem at all? Hopefully you have a fix for me...
    thanks.

Awesome - the Out Ref fix did it!
When I did the edit to tape I tried both insert editing and assemble editing - both ended up the same.
On a side discussion - how do you sync the FCP machine with the black burst generator? I'm still a bit new to this - what exactly does the genlock do on the Decklink Extreme card? Is this where I sync with the black burst?
I assume the digibeta deck will also get synced with the same black burst generator. Does this go into the reference input on the back?
    Thanks for your help,

  • Digibeta output looks horrible

I edited together three episodes of a series. The video was imported from Digibeta NTSC via SDI though a Kona3 card Uncompressed 8 bit. I created the sequence and then output the final sequence back to Digibeta using edit-to-tape through the Kona3 via SDI again.
The final master looked horrible with interpolation and aliasing all over the place.
I am not sure what the problem is. Should I have captured 10 bit, is there certain settings I should be using to output the final sequence. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info let me know.
    Thanks!

I had the wrong input chosen on the deck... I was recording composite instead of serial component - no wonder it looked horrible!!!!!

  • Outputting a DVCPROHD 24p project to DigiBeta (SD 60i) w/Kona Card

What's the best way to get my DVCPROHD 24p sequence outputted to DigiBeta (SD 60i) w/ the Kona Card? Is there a way to let FCP downconvert and add the 3:2 pulldown on the fly, (or with a render?) or should i export a cut 24p DVCPROHD quicktime movie to after effects, and then render out a 60i KonaSD codec quicktime with 3:2 pulldown to bring back in to FCP to layoff in an SD 60i timeline?
I want to use the method that will get the best quality downconvert and 3:2 pulldown results, since this SD digi is the final product...
    Josh

I don't know about the best way, or the best quality, but if the Kona card you have is the LH, I've heard it will do this live from the SDI output. I suspect this quality would be pretty darn high, though I don't know if anyone has done comparative tests. I think the Kona 2 won't do this for 24p, but will for most everything else.

  • Digibeta output through MXO

I have a couple of shorts to output to digibeta (originals in DVCProHD 1080i) and am wondering if it is worth hiring a deck to output via my MXO or better (certainly cheaper!) to take them on a hard drive to my friendly post house and get them to do the transfer using a Kona3 or similar?
The question is, will the MXO provide a better transfer than any other method?
Thanks very much for your help.
    Dominic

NO, there is no difference in quality between outputting with an MXO or a Kona or Decklink card.
I have output to beta with it, not digibeta. But I know there is no quality difference....I know many people who have output to digi via the MXO...just none of them post here.

  • FCP output to DigiBeta

Can someone steer me in the right direction here? I need to output footage to DigiBeta, BetaSP etc. Need to know what deck i need.

Thanks for getting back to me. Etc meant etc. Meaning a multi-format deck. <</div>
That doesn't help but I'm not helping either so we're even. You want to talk to a turnkey systems intgrator. This, after all, is the FCP forum.
We have several old BetaSP 1800s. Great decks after all these years. I have never used the bigger dogs. DigiBeta is not cheap, 200 model is $40k baseline. A mutliformat deck as in BetaSX? You don't want one of those. $20k for the baseline. You got the card to provide suitable output to these?
You can drop by B&H's Web site and get an idea of what these puppies cost. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

  • 911: Output to Digibetta for Dummies?!

    Hi,
My boss is insisting that i learn how to lay off my HD fcp timeline to digibeta by the end of the day today.
Can someone please take my hand and walk me through, step by step, what i need to do...both in FCP and with all of my connections. We are using a Kona Card.
    Thank you SO much!

See...this is why you need one-on-one tutoring. I thing what Tall did was great, and above and beyond, but your questions show a lack of very basic knowledge of editing video...and without that, I can't see how one could expect to know how to deal with high end video formats.
    DF/NDF. DROP FRAME and NON-DROP FRAME...timecode.
Stripe the tape past where bars start...meaning record a black video signal and timecode up to about 00:59:00:00...because bars and tone typically start at 58:30:00, and you will be doing an Assemble Edit so all you need is that much of the tape striped with code.
    Patch 422...that is deck control.
And there is NO WAY that we can say on the boards how the actual deck works...what do to and what menu does what. I guess there is, but that will be a lot of typing, and visuals will be needed.
Dude...you need on had help...you need to get taught in person how this works. I have no doubt that what Tall said contained a lot of jargon that was intended to see how much you really know. And it is apparent that you don't know that much. No offence...when I first saw a digibeta deck I was intimidated. It is a complex beast. And it took a few tutorings from other editors to know how to do things.
    Get actual in person help.

  • Outputting to Digibeta

I have an independent film I edited on Final Cut Pro which I need to export to a Digibeta master with separate music & effects tracks. The audio configuration the distributor wants is to have the stereo composite mix on channels one and two, and separate music and effects tracks on channels three and four. I have the separate tracks, but what I'm trying to figure out is how to arrange them in Final Cut Pro to make the Digibeta tape. Is it as simple as putting the tracks on tracks one through four in the FCP session, hooking up a Digibeta deck and just hitting play in FCP, recording straight to the Digibeta? I have no idea how to do this...

    See this:
    http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/ljmultaudio.html
    It worked for me.
    Hey Patrick,
just read u'r post. read larry's article too. so just pls. lay it down for me once more....i'll have to dump out once with two audio channels, say 1&2, (since my decklink has two xlr outs only) and do a two channel,3&4,
audio dub out later. IS THAT IT ??? i'm asking this cos i'll have to hire a d-beta recorder to try it out & it does cost a bit down here !!
    thanx much in advance,

  • Help! Outputting 24fps timeline to Digibeta for 1 hr show

    Hello
We are looking to assemble to tape, a show cut with a timeline of 23.98 and making certain that the program times out to EXACTLY one hour for network broadcast. As we are assembling to digital betacam for the downconverted version, it appears that the exact 1 hour program is now 1:00:03:22 when outputting to DF, NTSC. Any ideas as to what may be happening that the show is extended by 3+ seconds? We greatly appreciate any help as our deadline of course, is yesterday!
    Nemo

NDF timing is different that DF timing. Because video runs at 29.97fps and not 30fps, it runs slightly SLOWER....so to make up for this, DF code was invented. To ensure proper accurate timing.
Now...23.98 timelines do not have DF code, they only have NDF code. So you need to figure out the difference in timing.

  • Help outputting using Panasonic AJ-SD955 / Blackmagic Decklink Extreme

    Hello to all,
Anyone out there able to walk me through connecting and outputting to a Panasonic AJ-SD955 and getting a reference signal? I am using a Decklink Blackmagic Extreme Card and FCP 5.0.4. I've been capturing all night, literally , from the deck, but am unable to Edit To Tape/output. I need to black and code a tape and output with picture starting at hour 1. I do not seem to be getting picture or reference to the deck.
Picture shows up on my monitor when playing straight from the timeline when viewing via the Blackmagic card.
When I park on the timeline and push the record button on the deck and view via the deck, I have picture on my broadcast monitor.
The picture is jumping every few seconds, hence my thinking that I am not getting reference.
On the front of the deck the SDI light and Analog video are lit up. They are not flashing.
When I tried black and coding the tape timecode laid to the tape but no black.
When I try Edit To Tape nothing is going to the tape.
From the Blackmagic Card to the deck the connections are the following:
    (14) Genlock is going into the top Ref. Video In -- The 75 termination switch is on.
Analog Composite Video Out is going to line B on my Sony monitor and provides the picture from the deck.
    (16) Deck Control to Remote IN/OUT.
    (13) SDI out to SDI IN on deck (top port)
    (15) SDI in to SDI out on deck (top port)
If you need any other information please let me know. I am posting in several places in an effort to get an answer fast, because what would life be without deadlines? LOL!
    As always, thanks in advanced!
    Peace,

  • Output 24pn video for television?

Here is the situation. I’m working on a video which I shot 720p 24pn on my HVX200. I need to output the video onto tape to play on local TV channels (so I'm assuming i need to make the tape NTSC 29.97 interlaced, 720x480)
I’m using fcp 5.1.4. My sequence is set to 'DVCPRO HD 720p60' with the frames per second set to 23.97.
*This is my question- What is the best workflow step by step going from the 720p24pn timeline to a NTSC tape?*
Can FCP add the pulldown to the 720p 24pn footage? Id so how do I do that? If not, do I need to use an external plugin like Graeme Nattress GAddPulldownDown to do the pulldown and then convert the frame size with compressor? Any other suggestions? Then do I bring that converted video file back into a FCP DV NTSC timeline and print to tape?
I am not familiar with handling progressive footage and 24fps footage so any advice is much appreciated- I just want to make sure I do it right and it looks the best it can.
    Thanks

Where in Montana? I lived half my life in Missoula, and went to college in Bozeman.
You gotta talk to the channel as to what they will take. SD 29.97 NTSC doesn't say much at all. BetaSP, Digibeta, DV, DVCPRO 50, 3/4" Umatic, MII (they had MII at the PBS station in Bozeman...ugh). Don't figure on anything...ask them. Just because it is Montana doesn't mean it is completely backwards. I have no doubt they have beta and digibeta tapes. But, being as low cost as the TV stations must be, I'll wager that DV and DVCAM are more the norm.
If you have a DVCPRO HD deck and you are ouputting DVCPRO HD, ONLY THOSE DECKS will remove the pulldown. And an HVX-200 isn't a DVCPRO HD tape mechanism, that is DV. You cannot downconvert from DVCPRO HD to DV via firewire, much less remove the pulldown, and just dropping a DVCPRO HD 23.98 clip into a DV timeline and rendering won't do it either. FCP is horrid at removing the pulldown. Find a deck and export, or export a self contained file and take it to someone with a Kona or Decklink card.
Man, the faculty at MSU have approached me with the idea of teaching as an adjunct for a year. That is heavy on my mind...
