Pacman error
Hello
I have just installed Arch 2007.08-2 and everything went well (dual booting with Ubuntu), however when I try to add packages with pacman I get "error: failed to add target '.........' (could not find or read file. Here is my pacman.conf:
# /etc/pacman.conf

It looks ok as far as I can determine. I also have uncommented the server in /etc/pacman.d/core, community and extra.
The first thing I did after installiation was to pacman -Sy, then pacman -Su everything appeared to go as it should have so the internet connection is fine.
Am I missing something simple, I have read through the Wiki and went back through the forums several months.
Please help, Thank you in advance
with the risk of sounding dull
I refer you to the man page as well as the wiki page
for the -U command.
also these two wiki pages may come in handy in understanding when you might need -U

Wiki.Arch / ABS
hope you will have a pleasant experience of arch!

[SOLVED] Pacman error when installing Arch from installation cd
Hey I''ve been checking the wiki, forum and even google and I've found some responses but they don't seem to apply to my problem and I just need a little help.
I'm at the 4th step "Select Packages" and when I select it I get "Pacman preparation failed! Check /dev/tty7 for errors"
the error on tty7 is "pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libalpm.so.4: cannot read file data: Input/output error"
I apologize if this is an easy fix but its been almost a year since I've used arch and I'm a bit spoiled with ubuntu.
****The cd was outdated. Burning a new copy fixed it*****
Last edited by Rabbit (2012-01-03 01:40:33)I'm afraid it might be too old. I'm going to try to burn a new copy tomorrow when I can borrow a friends computer. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something real simple before I gave up.

Pacman Error: No such file or directory, please help
This morning I decided to make a package using the ABS and I noticed this error when executing Pacman.
error: /var/lib/pacman/local/pacman-2.9.8-1/desc: No such file or directory
Consequently, the custom package (Gaim Beta 4) kept complaining about dependancies, when I knew those packages were installed in the system. I did some searching around and it appeared that my local database may be currupted? At any rate, one of the posters suggested to forcefully reinstall the offending package, which I did. Upon doing so, it appeared that I had found a solution. However, after installing another package, the error appeared again. Repeating the process resolves the error, but only once before it occurs again.
Upon further searching, another poster suggested that I should remove the offending directory, and then reinstall the package. When I attempt to remove the directory, I get a kernel panic and my entire system freezes. Since there is so much output, I've take a photo of the error (X just freezes).
I apologise for the dodgy flash, but you can see the output. If anyone could offer any suggestions/assistance, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Tate
EDIT: If it helps, I'm using the latest 2.6.18 stock Arch Kernel and LVM2 with ReiserFS.try this:
cd /var/lib/pacman/local
mv pacman-2.9.8-1 pacman-2.9.8-1.old
pacman -Sf pacman
verify /var/lib/pacman/local/pacman-2.9.8-1 folder exists
verify that following files are in folder: depends, desc, files, install
verify pacman -Syu works
rm -rf /var/lib/pacman/local/pacman-2.9.8-1.old -
Pacman error loading libalpm.so.6
Hi, my Arch installation worked flawlessy for 6 months, yesterday everything stuck while doing yaourt -Syu, rebooted after an 1 of waiting and retried, asked me te update pacman but it stucked again and now I can't use pacman anymore, every pacman command I try to use I get:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libalpm.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Any advice?Downloading the package from a mirror (using a browser), and manually extracting it should solve the issue. Be sure to check afterwards that the version pacman thinks it is is actually the version you have "installed".
EDIT: Be sure to back up your pacman.conf if you just overwrite everything.

(SOLVED) Pacman error: GPGME does not exist
Hi, I have also just been struck with the same issue - a broken pacman (and for no reason that I can fathom). Was working perfectly yesterday and all I did that wan't usual was to uninstall clamav.
Anyway, I have read this post and done a pacman -Syy, which upgraded core and archlinuxfr only. I then ran pacman -Syu and received this:
[grant@ARCH ~]$ sudo pacman -Syy
[sudo] password for grant:

Should I do a reinstall of pacman using the CD? I know this is clumsy, but anything I have missed?

[Solved] pacman errors out after a hardlock
Hi, I experienced a hardlock today due to a bad memory stick during a pacman update. Now pacman tells me this (with --debug):
looking for inter-conflicts...

debug: returning error 33 from compute_download_size : package filename is not valid
error: failed to prepare transaction (package filename is not valid)
I deinstalled openoffice-base but I still get the same error.
Oh I think I found the culprit, in /var/lib/pacman/sync/extra/openoffice-base-3.1.0-1/ all files are empty.
I'm removing this directory now...
execute pacman -Syu again
still doesn't work
someone on IRC suggests pacman -Syy, this forces a synchronization of the database
I did that and now I do pacman -S openoffice-base.
This works, it's downloading openoffice-base from one of the mirrors now.
I thought I'd share this. Thanks for sharing, I'm sure it'll help out someone in the future.

[Solved] Pacman error after incomplete upgrade
Hi
I was updating my archlinux when my X11 crashed (I was restarting it after tweaking my gnome 3) .
Trying to update after that indicated that my system was already uptodate. Installing anything indicated that pacman was running else to delete a file /var/lib/pacman/db.lck , which I did.
Now I can install but get these errors (for an example of re-installing pacman):

[SOLVED] Pacman errors
Hello,
I've been trying to install fluxbox on my freshly installed arch linux (with updates) and I've been following a guide on how to do so. The problem is that I can't really install anything but 'pacman -S xorg', like for example if I try 'pacman -S hwd' I get this error:
http://rs51gc.rapidshare.com/files/1985 … G_1785.JPG
and this happens to pretty much every package that I've tried.
I've googled a lot and I've found some suggestions but none have worked =/
Please help.
Thanks.

[SOLVED] Pacman errors/weirdness
Hi, I recently installed Arch Linux on my PC. I have had experience with the Arch Linux distribution before so I roughly knew what I was doing. When I sucessfully installed Arch Linux I logged on and setup my wireless connection. After that I updated my system with:
pacman -Syu
It told me that there was an update for Pacman, but I wanted to update my system first of all so I skipped it. It installed during the package update process anyway. When it installed the new pacman version it created a new "mirrorlist" file as "mirrorlist.pacorig", so I deleted the old one and renamed the new one. But it seems to be having some bother, it is going really slow (probably nothing to do with the "mirrorlist" file) and it is detecting that I have a newer version of some packages than in the repositories. Why is this?
I apoligise if this is just a small error on my end but it was really fast before this update and functioning really well.
EDIT: I will reinstall my system just incase I have done something wrong somewhere.

There's nothing wrong. You need to comment out, or move ftp.archlinux.org to the bottom of the list. It's heavily throttled so people don't use it as their primary server. Unfortunately, there really isn't a good way to have a default server list. So, find mirrors close to where you live, move them up to the top of the list, move archlinux way down or off of the list, and everything will be fine. -
[Solved] Pacman errors: "call to execv failed", system not booting
Recent upgrade (yesterday) - problems went like this:
1) pacman -Syu attempted "filesystem" upgrade and threw errors about some directories in /usr/local being 775 not 755.
2) that was because I had a non-standard package in there. I changed just those relevant directories to 755.
3) reattempted pacman -Syu but got a bunch of errors: "call to execv failed"
4) system was immediately borked. Reboot now throws me into a shell.
This is a 32 bit system.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

1) used Arch LiveCD. Mounted boot and / partitions
2) pacman -r /path/to/root -Syyu glibc filesystem
3) reboot gave "Unable to find root device error"
4) ran LiveCD again following these instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … onger_boot -
[solved] Pacman error on nvidia 180.22 update
When I try update to nvidia 180.22-1 on testing appears the following error:
:: klibc-extras: needs klibc-jfflyAahxqaliwAofrf_fdf5upI
:: klibc-kbd: needs klibc-jfflyAahxqaliwAofrf_fdf5upI
:: klibc-module-init-tools: needs klibc-jfflyAahxqaliwAofrf_fdf5upI
:: klibc-udev: needs klibc-jfflyAahxqaliwAofrf_fdf5upI
I don't know why this appears. Is a pacman bug?

I don't see any problems to use testing at last priority, so I update to testing only programs which I want testing (and your dependences).
I think which the problem is on testing/mkinitcpio dependences.
Because, if it depends klibc>=1.5.14-2 then mkiitcpio also depends klibc-extras>=2.5-2, klibc-udev>=135-2, klibc-module-init-tools>=3.5-1 and klibc-udev>=135-2. On current PKGBUILD (http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/m … iew=markup) the stable versions of klibc-* are dependences.
I know when this packages gone to core this problem is disappears because of the update all packages klibc together. But I think which if the version dependences were implemented, this error wouldn't appears.
Thank you guys for support.
YES, changing the dependencies of mkinitcpio could workaround your problem. BUT
1) The current dependencies are fine and are NOT wrong. They just don't support perfectly the partial usage of testing, but as I said previously : PARTIAL USAGE OF TESTING IS NOT SUPPORTED
2) This is not a show stopper. If you knew what you were doing, you could solve the issue yourself without changing any dependencies.
3) Plazmic made a fine suggestion : if your goal is only getting the latest nvidia driver, it would be much better to simply use nvidia-beta on AUR, rather than trying to use testing partially without knowing what you are doing and bothering everyone here. -
[SOLVED] messed up yaourt output (could be due to pacman error)
Don't know if my yaourt issue is related to this pacman one http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=94378 but this issue is fairly new. Now when I run a

it starts fine but when fetching for AUR updates it starts showing core/extra/testing packages as they were in AUR (i.e rsync, ruby, thunderbird, samba) complaining it cannot find them in AUR (sorry for the French error messages):

Last edited by alphazo (2010-04-02 18:22:23)It seems your sync database got messed up somehow, especially based on your other post with issues doing a pacman -Syu. I suspect the advice to run pacman -Syy (or yaourt -Syy) should fix this problem as well.

Weird Pacman Error! [solved]
Since last night, I've been getting this weird error when I run 'pacman -Syu' as root. What's going on?

I was running in a semilar problem!
I forced the update from gstreamer0.10-good with
pacman -Syf gstreamer0.10-good
after then I run again
pacman -Syu
and all run normal.
You can also read here in this topic about it

[SOLVED] Pacman error: failed retrieving file : No address record
I just installed Arch on a x86 laptop using the cd as the package source. I wanted to do a net install, but when I attempted to (regardless of the mirror) I got many responses from pacman in tty7 of "No address record". This happened despite having a network connection and being able to ping any site from the cli.
After installing, I am still having the same problem. The laptop is plugged in via ethernet, and I can ping any site I want, but a call to pacman -Syyu just returns numerous errors such as
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.rit.edu : No address record
And just as a test, I was getting replies when pinging mirror.rit.edu.
Last edited by process91 (2011-11-18 18:21:17)Try the following steps:
1 - Set the VirtualBox Networking option to NAT
2 - Start the arch machine in the VirtualBox
3 - Edit /etc/rc.conf as a dynamic IP:
HOSTNAME="arch"
interface=eth0
address=
netmask=
broadcast=
gateway=
4 - Run dhcpcd
5 - Try to ping a couple of sites, or your router
If you still can't ping or anything, I suggest you start a new thread specifically about your problem. Include the output from "ipconfig -a". You're not going to get much help from posting in a thread marked "[SOLVED]".
