Pacman stopped working

I ran pacman -Sy to upgrade the database - and as usual it worked perfectly. I then ran pacman -Su to upgrade (I do it once a week) and there is nothing. Pacman will not respond to any command. I made no changes.
To be sure, I edited /etc/pacman.conf to conform with the information in the howto for setting up the mirrors, and edited /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist to reflect the correct part of the world (USA). No change. No commands work any more except pacman -V.
Since I made no changes to the system, what could have happened?  -- the rest of the system works perfectly. Can't even reinstall pacman from the database.

  • [ SOLVED ] Pacman stopped working after last pacman -S pacman

    Hi.
Today I tried to install a new package, and pacman prompted that there is new version of it, and I have to install it first. I accepted and installed the new version of pacman. They I updated the package list. After a while I had to reboot the machine, because my X crashed, and now pacman command is not doing anything. What can I do.

  • Sound stopped working

    Hi.
    It used to work.
I have problem with sound. Yesterday It does work, but today it stopped working. I'm not sure if it is because of some updates, I haven't noticed anything connected to sound. The only difference is that I uninstalled mplayer2. Then it stopped working - but I'm not sure if it was because of this.
    I tried:
    reinstall alsa, alsa-plugins, alsa-utils, vlc, mplayer2
    install pulseaudio, oss (without configuration)
    reboot
    unmute all chanels in alsamixer
    connecting headphones
    aplay -L
    null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Same for me after system upgrade on 2013-05-01:
    pacmatic -Syu
Since then, no Audio output via HDMI anymore. Mainboard is Intel DH67BL.
Before upgrade, it worked. Audio via normal audio connector also still works.
    $ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono
But on the connected (via HDMI) TV is nothing to hear. Video on TV via HDMI works. Checked also alsamixer volume setting.
With this, I hear the sound on the speakers connected with the Mainboard:
    $ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Wiedergabe: WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate: 48000 Hz, mono
    $ aplay -l

I've read this, but did not help:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta … chitecture
Here the list of upgraded packages:
    grep 2013-05-01.*pgraded /var/log/pacman.log
    http://pastebin.com/vXjp3Bw4
I also downgraded to the kernel version before upgrade:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-3.7.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
But that did not solve the problem. Also using linux-lts kernel did not help.
I have posted this also on the german Arch Linux board:

  • Dell XPS 15 l502x mini-Display Port stopped working after update.

After the updates on the 11-10-2014 my mini-display port (which worked great previously and is part of the Intel Graphics) stopped working.
Am running Arch 64bit with Slim + E19
    The symptoms are:
    1. Detects monitor from the laptop and xrandr throws no errors
    2. Enlightenment thinks the screen is connected and it appears in the screen setup as on.
    3. The monitor no longer recognizes that there is a laptop plugged in and just stays off...

As far as I can see my options are to try and roll back via pacman -U in my /var/cache... or to figure out how to make my Nvidia HDMI output work using Synergy...
I suspect this is some type of driver regression (kernel/mesa/xorg) but am not sure as I have not seen much information about this issue online.
Unless someone has a better idea... when I get time to try to resolve the issue I will update this post.
Ok I missed this from dmesg:

So I downgraded those packages and the kernel with no luck.
I tried to get the HDMI working via Synergy... and failed
I then tested the Display Port on Windows and it did not work there either - exhibiting the same symptoms as Linux - the OS sees the monitor but no data was transferred.
So I ended up using one of my Display Link monitors at work... the USB monitors were ok, just an irritation with a flickering mouse.
I hope it is the miniDP>HDMI adapter and not the port... very frustrated by this problem.
I hope to test another adapter soon.
I think as nobody else is experiencing this issue that it may well be hardware/firmware related.
Hope there is a happy end to this post but not feeling so positive right now.

  • USB ports suddenly stop working: xhci_hcd and ehci_hcdwontload[SOLVED]

Hello everyone.  I am having USB issues on my HP dv6t-7000. I was using my USB keyboard/mouse and the USB was working fine.  I then plug in a flash drive and ALL USB PORTS STOP WORKING.  So I tried the usual fix of reloading xhci_hcd.
    rmmod xhci_hcd
    modprobe xhci_hcd
but nothing happens.  I check lsmod and the module is not loaded. Neither is ehci_hcd:

A new kernel was just installed via pacman.  I haven't booted it yet.  Maybe that will fix it?
EDIT: This is happening with kernel 3.7.6-1-ARCH.  Especially after the computer goes to sleep.

Something else I noticed was that when I unplug the power cable to my laptop, the USB 3.0 stops and I get this in dmesg right after:

*NOTE is it possible to install the 3.8-rc kernel through yaourt? I have tried to compile it myself using old config and it never works.  EVER.

  • [SOLVED] Services on my server have stopped working...

    Hey,
During christmas some services on my server stopped working. When i was browsing a torrent tracker i noticed it said i was no longer connectable. Logging in to my router i saw that UPnP was no longer creating the forwarding port for my router, i tried forwarding the port manually but the port remained "closed". I also realised i could no longer log in to my FTP (bftpd), although i had just a few hours earlier. My httpd service and ssh was still working fine. I thought it was trouble with the router, but when i came back home i realised i couldnt access the ftp from within my network either. No settings or updated had been made.
When i do systemctl | grep service i dont see bftpd anywhere... i have reinstalled bftpd enabled /disabled / started /stopped many times, but i dont get any errors.Shouldnt i see it in the list?
I ran pacman -Syu when i first found the errors, and now again at home without avail.
Where do i begin searching for errors? My very limited skills let me set up arch linux, but not troubleshoot.
While i was writing this i realised that the latest -Syu fixed transmission; it installed a new version (2.75) and since then UPnP works again, and i cam connectable. I still cannot get bftpd to work though.
    EDIT:
Holy crap i'm a retard... Bftpd is not started with systemctl... but with bftpd -d command. Still cant log in for some reason, but yeah. I'm sorry to be a bother.

Reset the SMC, as per: > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) only wait a few minutes in step 3 instead of 15 seconds.
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds. a few minutes.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Also check for a bad cable or device if your USB overloads trip off again.

  • After update usbmouse stop working

    hi @ll
after i upgrade my system with pacman -Syu
my usbmouse stop working some times by using in mozilla or kde
when i put out the usbkabel und switch it again in then it work again
fine (but only 10 minutes or moving in browser)
before i update it work all fine without any problems
some one can help me ? how can i search for the problem
why the usb stop working only if i reconnect the usbmouse ?

I assume you are connecting via AirPort. It seems that the 10.4.8 update disrupts AirPort functionality on many intel-based iMacs. From reading all the threads on this subject, I would say your simplest and most effective solution is just to downgrade back to 10.4.7. Many users report issues even after they implemented Apple's recommended fixes.

  • Mouse buttons stopped working

Hi, I'm running the 64-bit version of Arch on a desktop (custom-built from components), with a Radeon HD 4670 graphics card using the catalyst-total package.
Everything was running fine until earlier today, when I plugged in my phone to download pictures. It's worked fine before and hasn't caused any problems (it has a micro-SD card that acts as a mass storage device in file managers). This time, after plugging it in, my mouse (wireless, USB) lost the ability to send button presses (or the x-server lost the ability to receive them, or to process them, or something). Moving the mouse works to change the cursor position on the screen, hovering it over different items makes the cursor change appropriately, wbar expands like normal, and tooltips show up. But clicking/scrolling does nothing.
I've tried rebooting, a full system update, and reinstalling different packages that would be related to the problem. (xorg-server, xorg-input-mouse, catalyst-total...) Any ideas on how to get my mouse working again? It's a bit hard to edit photos, etc.
    Thanks!

I don't think, that evdev has something to do with the xf86-input-mouse. But I belive, this is a real issue, because my good old configuration stopped working (buttons aren't customized) today as well. Looks like the reason is hidden somewhere in yesterdays pacman -Syu .

  • [SOLVED] Mouse buttons stopped working

I have a Logitech Marble Mouse (connected via a USB to PS/2 adapter).  It has no scrollwheel, so I set up the small "extra" pair of buttons to toggle "scroll mode" in certain applications (like Firefox & Chrome).  When activated, moving the trackball scrolls the page up/down/left/right instead of moving the pointer.
It's been working fine for months, but a week or so ago, the scroll buttons suddenly stopped working.  The settings are contained at the very bottom of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.org, and the only other file in that directory matches "ThinkPad HDAPS acceleromer data", so shouldn't affect the mouse settings.
(The buttons that don't work are "B" and "C", which both activated scroll mode:)

I've tried playing around with the button-mapping, even jumbling 4 5 6 7 to 5 4 7 6 (which, I thought, should invert the movement of the pointer), but none of this has any effect.  I've checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and I don't seem to have any mouse-related settings there... and I've read the wiki, but I can't see what I'm doing wrong!
    Can anyone help? :-)

I don't think, that evdev has something to do with the xf86-input-mouse. But I belive, this is a real issue, because my good old configuration stopped working (buttons aren't customized) today as well. Looks like the reason is hidden somewhere in yesterdays pacman -Syu .

  • Audio stops working after a while (30+ minutes uptime with audio)

I'm having one hell of a time with the audio on my machine hope someone can help...
(edit: forgot to mention, installed packages: pulseaudio-alsa, pulseaudio-gconf and paprefs, using i3 WM and SDDM. Switching to i3 and SDDM are the biggest recent changes I made before this started, although I did pacman -Syu at some point around then too)
    Here's what I'm experiencing:
Start up my machine, and usually watch some videos and play some video games.
After things have been running for a while (anywhere between 30 mins and a few hours) I'll quit my game, load up a different video, or do something else that involves quitting an application that plays audio.
From this point on, any new application that are opened (including new tabs in any web browser) will not play audio, even if other applications are currently playing audio.
I haven't been able to reproduce the issue reliably.
I've tried examining the output of "pacmd list", and I thought I had found some differences yesterday between when its working and when its not, bot today the output is different when audio isnt working than it was yesterday. (actually, I just checked again, and now it is the same as yesterday). I can post the output from when its working vs when its not working if that helps diagnose anything. The only differences that seemed significant is that there is a second module called "module-alsa-card" listed after the sound stops working, two new sources are listed for what I believe are my headphones and mic plugged in the rear panel, and a new card shows up which I think is the onboard audio. It almost seems like pulseaudio is taking over my soundcard when I stop using it, and in doing so prevents audio from playing.
There are a couple of times when it just started working again, without me doing anything at all. I'm really losing my mind over this, any advice is welcome!

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update, select 'View update history' in the left hand pane and then select 'Installed updates' link in the following window.
Locate update KB2962407, right click it and select Uninstall.  When done, restart the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update and select 'Check for updates'.  You'll see the update you just uninstalled being offered again - right click and select 'Hide Update'.
After this you may or may not need to delete and reload the Audio driver - if you do, the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.

  • [SOLVED] Audio over HDMI stopped working? (Intel/i915)

My audio over HDMI was working fine until recently and I can't figure out what's stopped it from working... My configs haven't changed and aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav gives no errors, but no sound can be heard. There are no errors/messages in dmesg either.
My graphics card uses the Intel i915 chipset (Asus laptop).
    Config stuff:
    /etc/asound.conf:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
    ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
    aplay -l:

card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]

card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]

    Any ideas?

Yeah I checked and everything is fine... this is really weird!
I've tested audio over HDMI on windows, so I know it's not the cable/HDMI port. I've looked through my pacman.log (I tend to update daily) and the only thing I can see which could affect it is a kernel update and intel-dri. I tried downgrading those and re-tested, to no avail.
I also installed pulseaudio and pulseaudio-alsa before it stopped working. This could have broken it, but I've since uninstalled them and replaced /etc/asound.conf with my original, so that rules those out; unless there is something else that pulse could have broken?
    Cheers

  • Wi-Fi stopped working about a week ago, workaround is available

    Laptop HP ZBook 15
Wi-Fi stopped working, did not change any configuration when it happened around kernel upgrade 3.16.2-1 -> 3.16.3-1, ~ September 17 - 19
Going back to 3.16.2-1 did not help, also tried to downgrade other packages, such as linux-firmware, used "pacman -U" to downgrade
Found a similar https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1451445, but the exact https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … ice_failed did not help. After some troubleshooting, here is what I do each time to connect to a Wi-Fi (I have a script):
$ rfkill unblock all # More details are in the other log below
    $ ifconfig wlo1 down
$ netctl start w # Now it will work
Unless there is a better one, this workaround can help the others, please consider amending https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … ice_failed

Try Disabling it then re-Enabling it.
If that does not work remove the Apple ID by using the Sign Out button and then re add it.

  • [solved?!] Sound suddenly stopped working (arch in vbox vm)

    Hi all,
I installed arch-i686 in a VirtualBox virtual machine a few days ago and at first, everything worked well, including audio. The guest additions are of course installed and running.
After making some updates with "pacman -Syu" the sound stopped working. There is no error message when I start e.g. vlc from a console and let it play an mp3-file. But there is no sound at all.
I already increased the volume of all the channels in kmix and alsamixer without success.
Can someone give me a hint?
Thanks in advance & kind regards,
    jamesbond007.

Well, after a reboot of the host (not guest) os it now continues to work!
I don't understand why, but I'm happy about it nevertheless.

  • Sound suddenly stopped working after reboot

I just got KDEmod installed and working.  Sound was working in it before I rebooted, to get ntfs-3g and hal working so I could mount my Win7 partition.  When I got back into KDE, I was notified that "The audio playback device *** does not work. Falling back to ."  I googled around all day, but couldn't find the cure for this.  Before the reboot, I installed hal and dbus through pacman, and added them to my DAEMONS=
I'm thinking it has something to do with hal or dbus somehow, is there anyway I can undo what I did?  Or is there anyone else who had/is having this problem that could help?

Same issue here after upgrading from KDE 4.2 to KDE 4.3.
Whenever a system sound has to be played, I have this notification:
"The audio playback device does not work Intel ICH6 with STAC9750,51 (Intel ICH6). Falling back to default."
Then it does fall back to default device and correctly plays the sound.
However, when I run JuK, after displaying this same notification, I have no sound, or rather, I rarely have sound (sometimes it takes a couple of seconds to start to play, more often it does not start at all).
I don't know if it's related, but video stopped working as well after migrating to KDE 4.3: Dragon Player just hangs when I try to open a video file ?
And yes, my user belongs to audio group, and video...
