Page based on template don't update image path

When I create a new page beased on a template in the
templates folder some of the image paths don't update.
A div in the template has the following style code
"background-image: url(../images/leftframe.png);
background-repeat:repeat-y".
When the new page is created, and before it is saved in the
correct folder the code turns to: "background-image:
url(file:///MYDISK/CLIENTFOLDER/client_webpages/images/leftframe.png);
background-repeat:repeat-y".
This is perfect, because the new page still don't know its
correct path. But in CS3, and earlier versions of Deamweaver the
path was updated when the new page was saved. That does not happen
in CS4.
Linked css files and other image and file paths are updated
as it should, but this div style is not.
I know the work arounds; move the div style code to the css
file, open the html page in an other html editor correct it and
paste it back...
I don't want to spend time changing my templates or perform
work arounds when it is obvious that there is a bug in CS4.
Others with the same experience or a way to solve the
problem? Or should I send Adobe a bug report?

Here's a better one - make the link root relative rather than
document
relative.

  • Name of editable instance inserted on page based on template

    I use a template that has an editable area named "scripts."
    The code, when I open the template in Dreamweaver, looks like this:
    <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="scripts" --><!--
    TemplateEndEditable -->
    However, when I use a browser to go to a page based on that
    template, the word "scripts" appears at the upper left corner of
    the page. You can see an example here:
    http://www.ellenfinkelstein.com/powerpoint_tip_link_and_return.html
    When I view the source in my browser, the code reads like
    this:
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="scripts"
    -->scripts<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
    Why does the name of the area appear between the tags and
    therefore on my page, when it's not in the original code? I've just
    modified the template and uploaded all the changed pages, so I know
    that they reflect the current template.
    Thanks for any help!

    Change this -
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="scripts"
    -->scripts<!--
    InstanceEndEditable -->
    to this -
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="scripts" --><!--
    InstanceEndEditable -->
    in the child page.

  • Template don't update- but views pages

    I develop a html web site and used 5 template pages.
    1. Then transferred the files to my clients computer.
    2. They them made changes to a few pages
    3. I tranfered the files over that they had changed
    4. Then found out the templates did not work?
    Who do I get them to work again. When using the templates it
    said that it is viewing pages buy does not update.
    Thanks for you help in advance

    A couple things to look for - are there any other elements on the broken pages that have the ID "Accessories"? If so, GoLive might be generating the extra ID to resolve the conflict. Also, did you move any of your Layer CSS code to an external CSS file? GoLive has issues with that and may re-create the Layer styles back on the internal page CSS.

  • Updating pages that use templates takes forever!

    All I often have to update pages based upon template changes,
    and I have a huge site 10,000 pages, it take dw forever to look
    through evryhting, to find the corect pages. Is there anyway I can
    specify what folder to find the pages rather then it looking
    through the whole site?
    thanks!

    The maximum practical site size for which a *Templates ONLY*
    approach makes
    sense is about 100 files. You are 100 times greater than
    that.
    Unfortunately, you are now stuck. The best thing you can do
    is to slowly
    work your way out of Templates and into server side includes
    instead.

  • Dreamweaver template won't change images

    I am using Dreamweaver 5 on a Macbook Pro and I have been trying to change the Header image in my site.  I would go in and change the image using the CSS panel but the image itself will not update.  I've tried deleting the old site definitions and recreating them only to have the same problem.
    Nothing will change on my template. It won't aknowledge my changed image "i have saved it under the same image name". i've tried changing the name of the image, re-loading it and still THE OLD IMAGE APPEARS!. What the heck is going on? Can someone please tell me where it is getting this image from when I have clearly changed the image, looked at image to confirm it is in fact the changed image prior to attaching it.
    I am completely puzzled and Desperate as my client expects these changes. Thank you.  In the mean time I will try to just upload the changed image to the web and hope the template uses the updated image on the server.
    Thank you for any help you can offer.

    Dreamweaver 5 means Dreamweaver CS5 correct? Can you give us a bit more info on your workflow? How's your site set up? Where does this image reside in comparison to the root of the site folder (make sure the image gets saved to the site folder)? Is the file path to the image correct? Make sure to turn live view off and back on again?

  • Preloading an image in a page based on a template

    I have a fairly simple problem here, there must be a simple
    solution. I hope!
    I have a site whose pages are all based on one DW template.
    On each page, there is a single image (a different one on each
    page) that I want to have preload. It is not part of any rollovers
    but is a significant graphical element and it is distracting that
    it is the final component to load each time. All I want to do is
    add it to the preload list in each page's <body> tag, but I
    am unable to do that, as it is not an editable area. I tried going
    into the template and adding an editable or optional region within
    the <body> tag, but it won't let me do that, and inserts it
    after the tag.
    I don't want to detatch my pages from the template, I am sure
    the client will have future site-wide changes.
    How can I do this? Thanks in advance for any help.

    > I tried going into the
    > template and adding an editable or optional region
    within the <body> tag, but
    > it won't let me do that, and inserts it after the tag.
    editable regions can't contain the head or body tag.
    select the body tag in the quick tag selector (bottom left
    margin of design
    window)
    then go to Modify-->templates-->add editable attribute
    and add an onload attribute.
    in the child page, use modify->Template parameters to add
    the preload.
    Or- use some other javascript preloader inside of an editable
    region in the
    head section.

  • Modifying a Template will not update the pages

    I have a template that is having problems to update all the
    pages built with the template. When I edit > save > Update
    template used in these files, everything looks fine- the updates
    log shows that it has updated 12 of 12 pages, BUT, when I check the
    pages, they won't have the changes made. Here are some things that
    I have being trying:
    1. When I created each page based on the template - In the
    new document log > page from template, I checked the option
    "update page when template changes"
    2. I tried changing the area that I edited (Menu Botons) to
    repeat region, then to editable region, and so on... But the
    problem persist.
    3. I chose modify > Templates > Apply Template to
    page.... and nothing.
    4. I re-read the DW Help, tutorials and watch the adobe
    videos on this topic...
    If somebody can tell me what I might be doing wrong, I will
    appreciate your help

    Why are you using the gotoURL behavior on your menu images
    instead of an
    ordinary hyperlink? In other words, you have this -
    <img src="
    http://www.prueba.turocpr.com/images/boton_sa_sobreturoc.gif"
    name="sobre_turoc" width="195" height="24" vspace="2"
    id="Image6"
    onclick="MM_goToURL('parent','index.html');return
    document.MM_returnValue"
    onmouseover="MM_swapImage('Image6','','images/boton_sa_sobreturoc2.gif',1)"
    onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()" />
    and you should have this -
    <a href="index.html"
    onmouseover="MM_swapImage('Image6','','images/boton_sa_sobreturoc2.gif',1)"
    onmouseout="MM_swapImgRestore()"><img
    src="
    http://www.prueba.turocpr.com/images/boton_sa_sobreturoc.gif"
    name="sobre_turoc" width="195" height="24" vspace="2"
    id="Image6" /></a>
    Anyhow, since you are using IMAGES for the menu buttons it
    complicates your
    solution a bit, but you can use this method -
    Put this in script tags in the head of the document -
    function P7_downImage() {
    var g7="<imagename>"
    var g7url="<pathname>"
    if ((g7=MM_findObj(g7))!=null) {g7.src=g7url;}
    and this on the <body> tag
    onload="P7_downImage()"
    Then on each page you would need to make two edits:
    Set g7 to the *name* of the button (not the file name but the
    HTML name -
    e.g., "productsbutt"), and g7url to the pathname to the
    button (e.g.,
    "images/nav/button3.gif"), and bada bing, bada boom!
    There is an excellent tutorial here -

  • Quits when updating pages with new template

    I have DW MX 6.1 on Mac OS X (10.39). It's a large site, over
    300 pages. DW quits everytime I try to update the pages based on
    the changed template. HELP! I don't want to update them all
    individually. That will take forever.
    Stokesy

    That's a good workaround, good idea.
    With the BLOG and 'new entries' I can just duplicate a given entry and use that as a 'template' so that should work.
    Still... it seems incredibly cumbersome to me.
    In Illustrator, if I modify any images that I'm using in a document it lets me know as soon as I open that document and I can automatically update those images and see how they work without altering any of that documents layout etc.
    In iWeb... even if I modify an image by a pixel I have to create a new page, and replicate any layout modifications I'd made to actually see how those new images are working in my design.
    Incredibly cumbersome and anti-iterative process, especially for those trying to slightly modify a given template with custom imagery. This type of work should be a snap to do... here, it's more like a crack over the head with an iron girder.
    ...sigh...

  • Template No Longer Updates Site Pages

    Hi, everybody.
    I am using Dreamweaver CS3 to build a web page.  I created a template file, called "Template1.dwt."  I then created all the other site pages based on this template.  When I updated the template, it asked if I wanted to update all the other files.  I clicked yes, and all was well.
    Today, for no reason I can discern, saving the template no longer makes any changes to the other files.  It doesn't even ask me anymore.
    The code in the beginning of the site files used to read, in part, "template="/Templates/Template1.dwt."  I think.  It now reads, "template="/Templates/Template1.php," which I don't think is even a real file.
    This is the second time this has happened.  The first time, I just rebuilt the whole site from scratch using a new template file.  I don't want to have to do that again, if avoidable.
    Does anyone know what happened, and how to fix it?

    Hi,
    Here are 2 common mistakes that will result in changes not propagating from Template to child :
    Rename the Templates folder
    Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server without also uploading the changed local files corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page is brokenSimple trickImproperly create your child pages by simply opening the template, adding page specific content, and resaving the template with an *.html extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if this is the case by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything like <!-- TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done). If you *have done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DWCS3) using FILE | New > Page from Template, select the template and click CREATE.
    First of all, try this little trick : Advanced > Recreate Site  Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing them. This will recreate a corrupted site cache. It often work ...

  • Pages and Child Templates Not Updating

    I'm having a problem in Dreamweaver CS5 where pages and child templates are not receiving updates made to the parent template. When I update the template, sometimes some files using that template will update, and some will not. Repeatedly updating the template sometimes forces the changes, but other times it does not.
    For instance I was working on a 50 page site earlier, made up of 1 master template with 5 child templates. I made changes to the master template, and it went through the update process, saying all the child templates and files have been updated. However when I open some, not all, files, they are not updated.
    I manually went through the entire site and hit 'update page from template', and that seemed to work. I opened a different site with only 1 template, did an update, and it only updated some of the files. I updated the template again, saved, and it then proceeded to update a few more randomly selected files.
    This was happening sometimes in CS4, but in CS5 it has become a bigger problem. Please let me know how this can be resolved.
    Edit: This is on a freshly reinstalled CS5 with all updates.

    Murray - Can share your book title with us, please?
    Sure. It's Dreamweaver MX Templates by Brad Halstead and myself - ISBN 0-7357-1319-7.  I spend quite a bit of time explaining nested templates.  Sadly, nowhere do I say you should avoid them.  But you should.
    There is a master template that controls top level navigation and then five child templates that give different left-side navigation based on which section of the site the user is in. You can see this in action at www.homerenergy.com.
    You should see how easy this is to do with server-side includes and a single template file.  It's the best of both worlds.
    You can see this in action at www.homerenergy.com.
    Yep.  http://validator.w3.org/unicorn/check?ucn_uri=http://www.homerenergy.com/&ucn_task=conform ance - even if you would leave the nested templates in place, you would sure want to fix those.
    The section-specific navigation is very easy to manage either with template conditionals or with server-side includes.  You can see this site - http://www.ent-sys.com - where I have done the section navigation on interior pages with template conditionals.
    However, your site is small, and simple.  Nested templates can work OK in such circumstances.  But I have never seen a use of nested templates that couldn't be done more simply with some other approach.

  • DW keeps asking me to update files based on template when I switch windows

    I have a page based on a template.
    Whilst editing the page from a template I am switching back and forth between a word document and windows folders to process the files for DW
    EVERY TIME I click on anything outside DW I get a dialog box asking me to Update Template links.
    I cannot get rid of it.
    If I press Update the box freezes for ages (I cancelled after 30 mins)
    If I press Dont update then it goes away until I click on anywhere outside DW again.
    I've never had this before so why now?
    It's so annoying it is preventing me from getting work done.
    I only have 5 pages so far - thank goodness I've not got a hundred pages!
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thenk you in advance
    Terry

    Try this:
    If that doesn't work, delete your DW Personal Configuration Folder as described below:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/49481
    That's from the thread I started today about this issue. So far, that has seemed to help. I can actually get some work done without getting prompted to update files every 10 seconds!

  • Any way to turn off errors when updating pages from the template?

    I'm using Dreamweaver MX. My site is huge. It's an intranet
    spanning dozens of departments. Some of those departments have
    subsites that don't fall under the intranet's control, although
    they are embedded within our site's folder structure. When I make a
    change to the template and update pages, every time I hit one of
    those subsites I get tons of errors, from "template not found" to
    "unmatched body tag". The errors that pop up each have to be
    clicked on before the updating can continue. I get hundreds of
    these.
    Is there any way to make errors not pop up while updating
    pages from the template? Or even to exclude certain folders from
    being checked? (Cloaking doesn't do it.)

    > I'm using Dreamweaver MX. My site is huge.
    Both of these are problems, I'm afraid. Combining that with
    templates is
    really trouble.
    > "unmatched body tag".
    Errors such as this are definitely caused by errors in your
    page itself.
    Can you show me a page where you would get this?
    > Is there any way to make errors not pop up while

    Valid code will not produce these errors. Unfortunately, the
    only way to
    avoid them is to remove any validation hiccups from your
    pages.

  • Updating child pages from a template in CS4

    I built a site that uses one template.  Everything was going along fine I'd make a change to the template and I was able to update all the child pages.  I made changes to the template yesterday and nothing updates.  I try using the update the site... I choose the files that use  and the one template I have and none of the pages update.  I've tries re-saving the template file as a template and still nothing updates.
    It has never immediately done an automatic update to the pages.  It always seems to be a while before the update these pages pallette comes up.  And again sometimes it will update all the pages, but most of the time not.
    I've done a search of the discussions to see if I could find a solution, before I posted this.  The ones I found do not have a solution that works for me.
    So does anyone know what to do?
    On a related issue... I usually create a page save the page to the site folder and then apply the template.  I have tried to create the page from the template, but the graphic in the background of the container div doesn't show up.  I usually have to then apply the template to the newly created page to get that to show up.  So what's up with this?
    Thank you!
    Nina

    Try saving the page to the site after creating it, even though the graphic doesn't show up.  It should appear when you save it.
    Just for drill, here is my "Seven Common Mistakes" post - do any of these cover your situation?
    Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes not propagating from Template to child -
    1.  Rename the Templates folder
    2.  Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other than root level
    3.  Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4.  Make changes to an editable region of the Template (which will not propagate)
    5.  Assume that Template changes will be effected by just uploading the changed Template file to the server without also uploading the changed local files
    6.  Corrupt the site cache so that the link between Template and child page is broken
    7.  Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the Template, adding page specific content, and resaving the Template with an *.html extension rather thanits *.dwt extension. (you can tell if this is the case by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything like <!-- TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done).  If you *have done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DW) using FILE | New > Page from Template, select the Template and click CREATE.
    The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing them.  Have you done any of those?
