Page Item: upon loading vs via select

well, that subject header is fairly cryptic....
I know how to link from a value on page 5 to and item in an HTML region of a DML page 6.
I know how to make page 6 be a parameterized report, so that I can have an item that's a Select List, and the reports in other regions will update accordingly.
Is it possible, and how would I go about doing it:
if we go from Page 5 to Page 6, the item in the select box will be the linking value
if we go from a menu directly to page 6, the select box will be null, waiting for a selection

There are various ways to navigate from one page to another. The most common methods are using a branch or a re-direct from a List item. Each of these methods provides a way to set page-items with specific values.

I am trying to generate values for a page item using a PL/SQL function body. It parses and concatenates many rows of our databases. In one case I need to return some generated javascript code to pre-load a auto-suggest class. In the other case, I need to concatenate a variable number of comment postings for a given article "to create a threaded blog view" (the number of comments could get quite large).
My problem is that APEX is maxing out at 32767 characters. When I defined my function with a VARCHAR2(32767) I got a buffer too small error. When I tried to run it using a CLOB I got a "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error string". I'm assuming this happens when it tries to exit the PL/SQL function and return control back to APEX (some type of CLOB -> VARCHAR2 conversion - but once again i'm just guessing).
I tried to verify the code works fine by running it in sql developer. When using DBMS.OUTPUT.PUT_LINE I got the same ORA-06502 error. When I replaced the return string with a "function completed" message instead, it ran fine and printed out the success message.
To validate it wasn't the contents of the string, I changed the function to put a DBMS.OUTPUT.PUT_LINE on each iteration through the result sets that builds the large concatenated string. Every line printed without issue and no errors were generated...
So, my question is...how can I generate text > 32k in size and display it to the user through APEX?
Please don't respond and say that I shouldn't be loading that much into a webpage initially and that I should be using AJAX to search through values and load them on the fly. That could work for the select list (if I can get past APEX's very particular URL parsing system) but it is not suitable for the "blog comments" functionality.

I honestly don't know enough about how APEX generates it's page items and the overall page to be able to answer your question. All that I can tell you is that its a simple "display only" page item that has a before header "Computation" on it powered by a PL/SQL function body.Sorry, I missed the "page item" and focused on the "PL/SQL". In that case you've hit a hard limit in APEX. Page items, report rows and various other things have a maximum output size of 32K.
I could do multiple page items each limited to 8k as you suggested and strategically concatenate them behind the scenes too - however this is extremely ugly. I need to consider how other people will be able to work with this code in the future.Absolutely—I really wasn't suggesting separate items as I was talking about buffering output from <tt>htp</tt> methods.
For handling large items, see the Save Large Value demo app. As you can see, this is not "out of the box".
For display-only purposes, APEX reports or dynamic PL/SQL regions are a better fit for the use cases you describe than page items.

What is the best way to get the UID of any selected page item (frames, rectangle etc)?

I need UID of any selected item on page and also array of UID's in case multiple selection happens. How can I achieve it?
One way I know is to write an observer and attach it on every new page Item created, but that way the system might become slow and also
the behavior will be unpredictable in case of multiple selections.
Can some one suggest a better way to do it?

The selection subsystem hides most ideas of direct adressing (e.g. UID of page item(s) or story) into the concrete selection, while from the outside you only work on the suite interfaces of the abstract selection. So you don't ask whether the selection is some kind of page item and you don't peek at the actual items. Instead you ask about their capabilities and applied values.
Attaching observers to page items has nothing to do with the selection, because they only notify about changes on those page items - which could also be caused by scripts or anything else. Even then, the most relevant changes go thru the kDocBoss as single point to attach an observer, rather than thru all those page items.
Regarding speed - the selection has many optimizations, for example "lazy" notifications can be deferred until they become appropriate for an UI update, they might even become aggregated / optimized away.
One starting point into the selection when you come from nowhere would be ISelectionUtils. Your selection observer might also pass interesting parameters.

The latest version of Firefox loads with the Ask page and doesn't retain the selected home page. How do I change this?

I downloaded the latest Firefox version. Upon loading it it doesn't retain the previous Home Page setting and always reverts to the Ask page, which is always indicated as the Home Page. This is annoying. How do I overcome this problem?

How to get notified when ever I select any frame (any page item) ?

I have added a observer class in my plugin which derives from ActiveSelectionObserver.
But my observer constructor is not getting called when i select a page item. (In short, I am not getting notified about the selection)

This will load all the items and refresh the data. The problem is as the number of items and content increases the delay in clicking the option and getting the content visible is significant and cannot be ignored. This is more annoying since the data
is static and once loaded, it never changes. I am thinking of improving the data refresh rate and looking for ways to load only the data for the selected item and not for all the items listed above.
Anyone has any good suggestions?

1. How to restrict LoadData() to load only the selected item? Since this will only load one item performance will be better on selecting the option. Is there any way to limit "this.Items.Add(new
ItemViewModel()" so that once an item is loaded, the flow jumps to

true;
2. Is there any way to create multiple LoadData() instance and connect them using Case/Switch to the available option? This will only initiate the LoadData() for that particular instance of selected item.
2. Take the performance hit once. Since the data is static and do not change later on do we have any option to load data once and prevent it from refreshing later on every time an option is selected? Will this impact any features depending on system (like
theming)?
3. Create multiple pages, one for each ID, and then somehow link them to the selected items in the list? I am able to achieve this, but this makes my project unnecessary bulky and difficult to manage.

1) After I create the new data model, and start the EP_LOAD_MAIN how can I see the sales history table in the colaborator workbench? I am assuming that before starting EP_LOAD_MAIN, data is present in the staging tables (T_SRC_XXX). So once EP LoAD MAIN completes data should be available in Items, Location and Sales_data tables. Then whenever you try viewing data on the worksheet through the collaborator Workbench (Contains links of the worksheets) based on the aggregation levels(item,location and time) selected in the worksheet definition, the data is displayed on the right side of the worksheet.So in your case, check for the levels and the members under the levels that have been selected in the worksheet. Analytical engine is for generation of forecast (either by Batch / Simulation / Other profiles) and has got nothing to do with the empty graphical background of the worksheet.

In the PL/SQL developer the SQLD_PK doesn't exist
The error message itself points to some Constraint violation in the procedure. Check the procedures that have errors after the rebuilding of Data model. Recompile them and then try running the Engine Administrator.

Muse,Page items slow to load - eliminate render blocking java script?

Everything was running smooth until I tried to cut and past new items into master pages. Now I have master page items loading out of sequence and very slowly at that. I went to google's page speed insites and I scored a 72% with a reccomendation to "Eliminate render blocking java script in above fold content" as well as "leverage browser caching"
Well... I have no idea what that means
any idea how I can improve the performance of my page? I've already compressed the images significantly, I don't think that's the problem. Google talks about expirey dates on cache items being too low or non existant causing delays on pages, and setting priority over viewable items. Can I do this in Muse?

I've actually been having the same problem - the interesting thing is that I've only really noticed it in the past several weeks (before, everything loaded fine). Could there have been a change in Muse in the way it's loading scripts that is slowing it down?

On the second site, I can't remember if I crunched the images, but on the first one, I used Image Optimizer to crunch down all of the pngs prior to publishing. For reference, I'm publishing both sites via Business Catalyst; one using a free CC account, and one using a paid eCommerce account.

Firefox crashes or closes upon loading page in 2nd tab.

Since upgrading to FF V10.0 I can't open certain pages and FF closes/crashes upon loading a new page in a second tab.
FF won't open at all while having 2 startpages, even in safe mode.
No crash report submitted. the last crash report was in V9.

How to populate another page item based on cascading select lists?

I've created cascading select lists based on the examples (using Javascript and AJAX) that i've seen on this forum. Thanks for help on that!
Now that I have these LOV's being populated without needing to submit the page, how do I take the value that is presently in each LOV and concatenate them together to populate another page item? I'm trying to build the URL string that will execute an Oracle Report once the user clicks a button.
Previously, when I had multiple Select Lists with a submit, the URL was being put together using an After Submit Computation that would set the value for an item (P26_REPORT_URL) on the page. Notice that a report parameter (i.e. parameter name and Select List value) is only included if the user has provided a value. The page item that holds these values is then referenced by a button for URL redirect. The URL Target for the button currently is: javascript:popupURL('&P26_REPORT_URL.'), but will not work at the moment because P26_REPORT_URL page item is not changing based on what is selected in the LOVs. Since I'm not submitting anything (do I need to?), how do I put together the values needed?

This is a great suggestion! After I posted, I started looking at a Javascript solution and figured it's probably what I had to do.
However, now the cascading select list no longer working for some reason after I added the function to concatenate the item values. When I remove the showReport() function the select list works again.

Pivot Table page-item as a multi select

Can this be done? When placign an item in the "page" shelf of the pivot table, the default is to allow a single valeu selection, but can we allow multiple selections.
For instance, if I place region in the Page item area, can I allow the user to select "West" and "East" as opposed to just 1 distinct value?

Why not just use a prompt with a multiselect box then?
It looks the same for the end user, only now he have to wait when he chooses another combo... in stead of that he had to wait only in the beginning something longer

Reset data picker page item by selection page item in Apex

Hi,
Need to create a report based on date ranges and for this created a interactive report and two page item datepicker fields P15_fromdate and p15_todate. Report works fine with this criteria.But user wants one more field quarter(P15_quarter), When they select the quarter the range values has to get reset and as to get applied to report.
Issue here is unable to find a way to set the page range item values based on the quarter field selection
Need help how to reset the page item fields.

You're right to think this is pretty laborious stuff. A co-worker wanted to do the same, to make sure users didn't lose a change when clicking Cancel. I suggested he look at calculating the query checksum before and after, which he tried. But it got very cumbersome very fast and he ended up dropping the idea. He's fairly new with Apex, but he's also a quick study, so it's not like he's a novice coder.
I don't have his implementation details anymore to even share with you.

Report Refresh on selecting All from Page Item

Hi,
I have a report that has the academic years as one of the page items. If we select the first entry '2004 - 2005' and then select 'All' from the page item, the data doesn't refresh.
However if we go ahead and choose any other value, for example '2006-2007' or any other entry and then select 'All' the report does refresh normally.
I've tried to search if this is a known bug, but I was unable to find any information. If any of you can help in this regard, reference to a known bug or if there's a workaround, please do let me know.

Items on page not set when called via hyperlink from charts

hello anyone who can help me on this thorny issue,
i have a barchart on one page (page 39), where if you click on the bar chart, page 40 opens and variables are passed on to items on page 40. the variables depend on which bar was clicked. looks somethiing like this:

this generally works - BUT, once in awhile, the correct page opens, but the items are NULL!
only when i press F5 to refresh the page, do the variables correctly pass to the items and the proper query is performed...
after some testing, it seems to happen when i click quite fast. quickly get back to the page 39, click a new bar and then i'm back at page 40 again.
if i do this slowly, maybe wait a couple of seconds, it generally works.
for ex., the URL would look something like this:
http://daidalos:7777/pls/apex/F?P=102:40:2118535974571692::NO::P40_DATE,P40_JAHR:2008.12.16,2008
- i know the variables are correct when i look at the URL
- yet the new graph on page 40 shows null values, and a click on the "session" button confirms that the items are null!
- once i press F5, the URL is the exact same, onle the items are now "refreshed" and the proper processing can take place.
so, can anyone tell me what is going on here and how i can avoid this?
the items are set as "hidden" (not protected). there are no computations or default settings to the items, and they are not reset to null at any time.

I suspect that the chart on page 40 is being rendered by an APEX database connection that is not the same one that renders the rest of the stuff on page 40. So, it is possible that the database connection rendering the chart does not see the new values for the page items set in the URL as these may not have been committed to the database yet.
You could try this.
Change the chart query to be
