Page numbering: 2 questions
1) I'd like to begin numbering on the 2nd page (labeling it as "2") of a document. I can only get numbering to start on the first page ("1") and so on. Or, the second page gets labeled "1" and then continues on.
and,
2) Can I put the numbers outside the margin, way over in the upper right corner, for example. I can't figure how to get there.
Thank you.
Remove any existing page numbers. Open the Format Inspector and click on the "Section" tab (every new document has at least one section by default). Put a check-mark in the "First page is different" box. Put your cursor in the header on the second page and select "Page number" from the "Insert" menu. Make you're top margin smaller so the header is closer to the top of the page (put a couple of carriage returns after the page number to bump the top of the page body down).
You're done.

Hi can anybody help with this.
I am looking for a way to batch page number documents. I need to add in a lot of A pages and doing it by hand is unfeasable. Does anybody know a plugin or a way of achieving this?
I'm looking for a solution where, for example I can tell acrobat that page 200 should be 199A. I know I can do this with the page numbering feature, but I need to do it on a large scale, so need to batch it.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
I have Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.oh thats right i dindt think of that, because i usualy do my graphics in illustrator, never occured ot me to make an oval on the master pages and then add the page numbers, but just for the sake of making things hard, what
happens if you made a design in illustrator that cant be made in indesign and want to make it into page numbers??!? -
First of all, wanted to say "Thanks!" for the answers I've found here. I've solved a lot of problems just by searching this forum.
So, here's what I'm trying to do... (FrameMaker 9, Unstructured, Win7)
Our books are numbered with <$chapnum>-<$curpagenum>. This works just dandy. However, when we have a change package with large bits of added material, we'd like to insert added pages with a 8-4.1, 8-4.2, etc. It saves having to print many changed pages for text that rolls to new pages. (In my latest book, this would be ~200 pages of rolled text. In one chapter!)
Our current workaround is to break up the document into two docs, then insert the .1 pages in a separate document in between. Then we manually type in the page numbers, and manually adjust the TOC and all that. There has to be a more elegant way!
I have created new Master Pages for the left and right .1 pages, but I can't figure out how to "freeze" the previous page number. In other words, the page before inserted material is 8-4. The inserted pages will be 8-4.1, 8-4.2. I think I need a variable something like <$previouspagenum>, but I have no idea how to create it.
Obviously, we'd like the .1 pages to be picked up in the TOC, Index and all that.
I'm sure I can come up with a variable to use to increment the .1, .2 numbering, but help on that would be appreciated, too, since I'm here.
I hope I've made this clear enough. I *think* I'm on the right trail, but need some help.
Thanks!
AnnaTo learn how to manage page numbers, see "Restarting Page Numbering in a Section" on page 61 of the Pages User Guide.
To have page numbers appear on both top and bottom of each page, Insert > Page Number in both the Header field and the Footer field.
The Pages User Guide is a great resource, free to download from the Help Menu. Easy to read, very informative.

I know how to do regular numbering on my ipad. But now I need to the number the first few pages with lower case Roman numerals, (i, ii, iii, iiv, etc. . ) and suppress the first two. Then I need to start numbering with regular numbers starting at 1 (on like, the 5th page). This is for my Dissertation. . . which is completely on Pages for the iPad.
Does anyone have any idea how I might make this happen? Or even how to do a work around? Ultimately, this all has to be submitted electronically, and the document is 190 pages long.Look at this similar post https://discussions.apple.com/message/18078902#18078902

Page numbers not working in pages
Help!
I'm working on a document that will be 100+ pages, printing it double sided to be bound together. I would like to have the pages numbers listed in the footer on the outside of the page as well as some text in the center of the footer. Working with Pages '09 version 4.1.
I have "facing pages" selected. "Left and Right pages different" selected. "Use previous headers and footers" selected. I selected "Insert Auto page numbers" and told it to put them on the outside.
The problem - only some pages have the numbers on the outside like I selected. Pages 1-12 have the page numbers are all left justified. Pages 13-16 are correct. Pages 17-23 have the page numbers are all left justified. So on and so forth. There is no rhyme or reason why some of these are different. I do have different sections in the document - but sometimes it's in the middle of the section that it decides to change the formatting on me.
On top of that, I added the text I wanted in the center. On some pages it's there, others it isn't. And again, no rhyme or reason as to why. Sometimes, the page numbers ARE in the correct place, but the text IS NOT there. Sometimes the page numbers ARE NOT in the correct place, and the text IS there. Leaving me with very few pages that are 100% correct.
The only thing I have going for me at the moment is that every page has a page number on it! I suppose that's something. And I believe I know how to go in and change the footers individually. But, like I said, this will be 100+ pages, I'd really like to just do it once, not individually for each page.
Help please! Thanks!Hello black94,
Ok I can load the WinForm project and know part of your game, although I'm not so sure how to play the game. I cannot understand your language.
When I checked the WPF project it seems you build the UI with WPF and only write events here, I haven't find binding related xaml code. Anyway, can you quote the problem or code about how you insert the white cell in WPF?
For the printPreviewDialog, I see you already asked about this question before:
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/ee97efd9-9245-4972-8576-a5230fb520e7/printpreviewdialog-in-wpf?forum=wpf
So the following place is where the error raised?
PrintDocument printdocument = new PrintDocument();
System.Windows.Controls.PrintDialog printDialog = new System.Windows.Controls.PrintDialog();
System.Windows.Forms.PrintPreviewDialog printPreviewDialog1 = new System.Windows.Forms.PrintPreviewDialog();
//this.printPreviewDialog1.Document = this.printDocument1;

Welcome to Apple Discussions
This forum is dedicated to the productivity application, AppleWorks. It is not a "catch-all" for how Apple computers work. Questions about Pages should be posted in the Pages ‘08 forum.
In Pages a title page can be created by placing the cursor in the body of the document then, in the layout inspector, click the Section tab & check First page is different. -
Page numbers from XML output file
Scenario:
We have a situation here where we would need to create an XML document and a pdf file produced by an Oracle 11i EBS report. The XML document will need to have the number of pages the report (in pdf) has produced.
For example, if I have two sales orders in the pdf report. And, the first order has three pages and the second order has five pages, we would need to create an the XML document with:
<order>1
<page>3</page>
</order>
<order>2
<page>5</page>
</order>
Question:
Is there a way for us somehow to capture the number of pages for the order (using my example) in the XML template? We want to capture it and use it to populate our XML document.
Thanks
Kamalakar.GHello,
If you know at which xml (data) branch you should break for each page, and your format template is setup to do so, you should be able to predetermine your page numbers using node counting.
I have used node counting only one or two times myself and (at the moment) can not even find the report(s) I used it with (sorry, just way, way too many reports around here... :-( )
Anyway, it is pretty straitforward and is documented at:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/x-tipnodst.html#1
A google search on XSL and node revealed many other sites with examples as well.
(ex. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Web_Languages-Standards/XML/Q_21875961.html )
Good luck and if I ever find one of the reports I actually used it in...I will post my code.

Report Generation Toolkit: Page Numbering
When creating a Word Report using the Report Generation Toolkit, I am using the Word Set Page Numbering.vi to display the page numbers in the footer of each page of the report. This works fine when the include page x of n switch is turned OFF. However, when the switch is turned ON the numbers only show up in the left footer regardless of the position setting.
Is this a known bug?
If not where do I report it?
I guess I just did...Hi Drugar,
I have filed a CAR (43K9NBF2) regarding this issue. I will look into fixing it for the next version of the Report Generation Toolkit. If you want to workaround the problem for now, go into vi.lib\addons\_office\word.llb\Word_auto_text_entry (for page number).vi. You can get a reference to the "Selection" property of the Application class. Then under Selection, get a reference to "ParagraphFormat". Then, you can set the "Alignment" property of the ParagraphFormat class.
Thanks for reporting this issue, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Page Numbering w/ASP and Dreamweaver CS3
I am new to this so please bear with me if this question has been asked a million times. I have a single search parameter searching for a "Department", the result displays on the next page (The Results page). This works fine. I am using DW CS3 and I am now finding out that when I use it with ASP it only allows the Previous, Next, First, Last, Specific records to be displayed.
I really want it to display the total amount of pages by numbers Example: (1-10, 11-21, etc...). Can someone please help me? I have searched the web and came across this site http://www.dmxzone.com/go?12449. I am not following where to put the code he suggest. Can someone please help me?
Thanks for any help in advance.

I am going to send an example page of want I my page to look like when I said page numbering (I don't want first, prev, next, or last). I want numbers like the results you will get from this page. http://www.gcfa.org/Department_Resources.aspx Can I do this with ASP?
If so so can someone please show me how? Thanks in advance. Maybe I have the right question this time. -
? how to add page numbers in pages 5.2, starting with page 2. Pages '09 had an option to not show folio on page one. Also any idea how to do left and right folios for a Tabloid? Many thanks . . .
Hello jacquemac,
Your first question:
There might be a better way of achieving what you wish to do, but following these steps could help you out.
You might want to blend in Thumbnails and Invisibles either with (cmd+shift+i and cmd+alt+p) or over the View section in the Menubar.
1. go for Documents (right end of the Toolbar) -> Section
2. place your cursor at the very top of your second page and click "Create new Section->Starting with this page" in the side bar on your right.
(what you are actually doing next is setting the pagenumbers for each section you created. You can see your sections in the Thumbnail view.)
3. click on your first page (the first and only page of your first section) and mark the checkbox "Hide on first page of section"
4. click on your second page (the first page of your second section) and "Insert page number" -> start at 1
Your second question:
Im not quite sure i understand what exactly you want to do here. One page, two columns, each column with another page number? As far as i know this is not possible.

Pages 5.1 can anyone help with removing previous page numbers please?
Hi. in the new pages 5.1 I have made a section break at page 10 in a document and found how to start numbering from page 10 as page 1. Can anyone please tell me how to remove the page numbers from 1 to 10 that preceed this section?

Adjusting page numbering in the Table of Contents
I have a question regarding adjusting page numbering in the table of contents. I have manually adjusted my page numbering to start at page 3, which is now called page 1. But my table of contents still show this page as page 3, while I want it to be shown as page 1.
How do I do this?
I tried to find an answer somewhere on this forum, but I couldn't find one. Neither could I find a solution in the help file.
I hope you understand my question. I also included the document, which might be of help. Thank you! This answer assumes that your document uses the Default page style for physical pages 1-3. You are going to need two different page styles to accomplish what you want. (I'm guessing you have used a page number offset of -2 to get your physical page 3 numbered as 1 and this simply will not work in the TOC.)
Put your cursor in the Title page (physical page 1) and open the Stylist (F11). Click the Page icon (4th from left) then click the New Style From Selection icon (2nd from right). Give it a name like 'Body'. Before you close the Stylist double click on Default just to make sure you did not change the style of the 1st page.
While you are still on the 1st page click into the footer and remove the page number field assuming you do not want it.
Put you cursor in the FIRST (1st) paragraph of the 3rd page and do **Format > Paragraph > Text Flow tab. In the Breaks section, check the Enable box, if not already checked, then check the With Page Style box, select the Body style from the drop down menu and set the page number to 1.
If the page number field is still in the footer on this page then delete it and insert it again. It should now show 1.
Click into the TOC, right click and select Update Index/Table.
Just in case you have trouble translating this to your version of SO I have fixed your document and have attached it.
* *To change to a new page style while writing your document do Insert > Manual Break > Page Break and select the new style. If you want a new page number you can check that box and set the new number. -
InDesign CS4 page numbering not displaying correctly in Pages Panel
Hello,
I searched the forums for a solution to my problem before posting. I am sorry if I'm doubling someone's question but here I go:
I noticed this problem I have about 6 month ago. When I create a simple document with automatic page numbering everything is fine. When I try and create a section (i.e. I want my numbering to start at 1 at page 3) it actually works however in the Pages Panel the pages are displayed with their basic numbers. You will agree this is rather confusing. I've tryed different files, same files on different computers and so on. The problem has to do with my installation of InDesign CS4 and I suppose it's some kind of a display option I accidentally turned on.
Could someone please suggest a solution? Thank you! -
, Page Numbering/TOC in InDesign CS5
Hi, I am using InDesign CS5 and need some help showing the page numbers for a section that will be added after printing.
I have almost completed a low volume 400+ page book (60 copies) and need some special numbering.
I am using 8 & 16pp signatures in this book. The first section is: Front Matter, the second section is for Front Text, the Center Section is a color photo album with 40pp (2-16pp & 1-8pp signatures), and the fourth section is Back Text.
The Center Section will be printed on a color printer and hand inserted at the binders. I have no problem with the numbering of all the sections, but I would like to have the center section to be included in the Table of Contents of the book. I could update the TOC manually but as I move things around that would be a lot of work and I might have errors later. I hope that I made this question clear enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I would add the pages for the color section and any headings you want to include in the TOC, and simply not include it in the PDF you send to the the monochrome printer, and include only that section in a PDF for the color printer.

Page numbering in InDesign CS5.5 not working
21 Chapters have been added to InDesign CS5.5's Book File feature. However, only the individual chapter numbers are shown, not the cumulative numbering system. Can anyone please help resolve this issue.
Eugene, sorry I can see how my question is not clear. My issue is this: I've added 21 chapters of a book to InDesign CS5.5 Book File. When I did so I expected all the chapters to paginate with consecutive numbering. But all I see in the column beside the chapter title are the page numbers (folio) that were created in each chapter. Since all my chapters start on the right hand page the beginning number is alway 2. Each chapter has used the same Master pages template and are spreads.
Hope this clarifies my issue. Thanks.
