So some thread called the scan_next() routine in the Apple.Atheros AirPort driver (Atheros is the brand of Wi-Fi chip in the MacBook and MacBook Pro), which called change_channel() to change the AirPort channel, which told the driver to drain the transmit queue of any outstanding buffers (ath_draintxq().)
Unfortunately, when the driver was done doing that, it tried to free the associated mbuf, which was already free.
Many experiencing this bug have had Azureus, Parallels and/or Little Snitch installed and have found uninstalling one or more of those has resolved their panics.
However the panic traceback above indicates this seems as if it is a general case bug in Leopard and removing the applications named may simply destress the network infrastructure such that the panic no longer occurs. However it is also possible that the kernel extensions associated with the applications above is calling a Leopard analog to a Tiger routine improperly, causing the panic.
Either way, several people have reported the bug via the Apple Bug Reporter at this time.
Please post here if you have concrete evidence of something above (e.g. you had the panic, you removed Little Snitch, the panics are now gone.)
Please don't post rants or simple "me too" posts, but please do post if you are having the panic but have none of the applications mentioned above installed (not running, but installed).
Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

Log of the panic is attached below. I have neither Azureus, Transmission nor Little Snitch. In fact I did a clean install of Leopard because I thought that was causing the problem, I didn't realize everyone else was having the same issue as well. If anyone has a temporary solution to stop the KPs please do share. I'm alright with waiting for the next patch but I'm wondering if all this constant rebooting might kill my hardware before then.

  • Kernel Panic / Blue screen of death on brand new MacBookPro 2.6 GHZ

I thought it was quite normal to get one system crash with a brand new computer (MacBook Pro 2.6GHZ, OS 10.5.1 pre-installed, everything updated) , so I wasn't too worried when it occured yesterday. But now it happened again...
    1. I use Mail and Web browser.
    2. The wireless internet connection goes down. (The connection icon indicates that everything works, but no application can reach out).
    3. The system crashes, after a short while.
The computer is brand new. No Haxies installed. (Quicksilver, is an application, not a haxie, right?)
What is installed: iWork, iLife, DevonThink, MSoffice, Quicksilver, Adium, Adobe CS3, EndNote X1.
Does your new MacBook Pro crash as well?

The system crashed again. Does this look familiar to anyone? Does this look like a hardware or a software problem?

  • Kernel panic in os x.5

I have never had a problem with sudden crashes with my mac or os x. In fact, that's why I preffered os x to windows and had decided to make mac my primary computer.
However, in the past few days, I have had 3 "kernel panics" which have crashed my computer. Being technologically illiterate, I googled my problem by copying the words from the error, and I found out it is the mac equivalent of the spontaneous "Blue screen of death" error in windows os. As much as I appreciate how the developers at apple have made the sudden crash error more aesthetically pleasing than its windows cousin, I would like it to stop.
Below, I have copied and pasted the readout of the errors (saved in Library/Logs/PanicReporter) in chronological order of occurance. Can anyone who is more tech savvy than I am tell me how to stop this from happening? I have not downloaded or installed any hardware or software lately.
The only change I made was bringing the mac pro tower home for the memorial day vacation (5 hour drive) to my parents house, and installing mac drivers for a belkin wireless network adapter. Any help would be appreciated.

Though I not very sure what is going on, I have this feeling that this has something to do with hardware (could be ram or disk). Another possibility is that some incompatible drivers (as you said) for your external hardware cause this when you connect these hardwares.
My first advice is that you repair your disk and permissions using disk utility.
Try to update all softwares and drivers for leopard. did you upgrade your OSX with leopard or clean/archive install it?
I could assure you that I have been using Mac OSX for more than one year and just had one or two kernal panic ever which is primary reason I am sticking to Mac forever.
With little experience with kernal panics, just another piece of information i could add is that Kernal panics are mostly because of illegal or corrupt memory address referencing, in short disk or memory issues.
Though I would agree Tiger is ten times more stable than leopard. I am sure things will be better with future 10.5 updates.

  • Kernal Panics since 10.5.1?

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.5.1 my macbook has suffered 4 kernal panics, it didn't happen once under 10.5.0 or under 10.4,
i have reset the p-ram, repaired permissions and fsck-fy is single user mode, is there anything else i can try?

    Nope, not a RAM problem,
bought 2GB of Ram yesterday and just tonight I woke up because of a KP while I had iTunes running. I only had iTunes and Mail running.

  • Regular Kernal Panics - please help.

    Hey,
No issues running Leopard so far, it's failed to wake a few times but otherwise a good experience. That was until yesterday when my MacBook decided to repeatedly panic causing a transparent black box to appear with a power logo telling me to restart the computer .
When it restarts this is the report it chucks out. This has now happened more than 10 times in as many hours. Always the same info in the report. Any ideas - suggestions - ANYTHING!?!

I think that you got the same Panic as I have on my brand new MacBookPro. I have no usb devices attached, so I think you can safely rule that one out. Zapping the PRAM will not help. My machine crashes frequently as well. (My machine also failed to wake up once, and then I got this same crash message, so that might be this very same problem again.)

  • Airport Use = Kernel Panic

    Hi there,
Just last night I had my first kernel panic on my MacBook in a long time. After suffering several more, I discovered that my airport connection stops functioning shortly before the kernel panic. The only thing that I can think of that has changed was that I installed an update to Transmission. I reinstalled the old version, but that did not fix it. I read that people were having similar problems when using Azureus, but not Transmission. It could very well be that Transmission is unrelated to my problem, but it's the only thing I can think of. Here's is the log of one of my kernel panics:

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've ran into the same thing a couple of times running Leopard. It's happened with Azureus, and yesterday I was going to upload a file via FTP with Transmit, and it happened again. All network activity stops, and soon after, the KP curtain drops.
It has to be a Leopard bug. I would suggest sending the logs to Apple after the KPs happen, and let them know what you were doing when they happened.

I have been having a recurring kernel panic on my Intel Mac mini since upgrading to Leopard. I run my Mac mini as a home server, so after logging in I tend to leave it alone downloading a few things.
However, when I return to it after a few hours it has suffered a kernel panic and asks me to hold down the power button.
Here is the backtrace I get. I would very grateful if someone experienced could give me any idea of what is causing the panic (is it something to do with the airport?). I've submitted the crash report to Apple several times.

    Thank you!
    Harry

I'm curious how you installed Leopard - was it an upgrade install (the default option), an archive and install or an erase and install?
If either of the first two, did the mini show any signs of instability at all before the update to Leopard?
Also, what software is installed on the device, and peripherals connected to it, and while you describe it as being used as a 'home server' exactly what is it that it does?
You could be suffering kernel panics as a result of several things, not least that there is something still on the system from the prior OS that Leopard isn't compatible with and which would have justified an erase and install and a full reinstall of software; that there is software in use which is not fully Leopard compatible; that there is an external device which is causing the problem; that there is an internal hardware problem - typically RAM.

  • Kernel panics with Leopard 10.5.0 and 10.5.1

I'm consistently getting kernel panics that seem to be connected to my airport extreme card. These kernel panics are much more likely to occur when using an application that is network intensive (such as a bittorrent application).
The panic reports also indicate that the issue is caused by the airport driver; here is a copy of the latest panic report:

  • Kernel panic(s): please read and help if you can

I've had a couple kernel panics in the past few days; I believe that two of them happened when I was away from the computer and the computer then (eventually) shut its display off, so that when I returned to the computer, it was completely unresponsive except to holding down the power button for a little while and then restarting. I've pasted the last few k.p. log files here; can anyone tell me if they are related, and what they are? (and perhaps also a quick k.p. log file primer, so I'll know what to look for in the future?)
    thanks!

hi French, thanks for the input here. Mac ran for a week and half without any issues. Problem only happens when using 3G internet USB device as explained below.
My Mac has now for the 2nd time given me the restart message, couple of minutes ago. The only mobile device connected to this is a 3G Vodacom internet USB stick. I'm using 2 different service provide mobile broadband connection managers software installed at the same time. I think this is what is causing the issue. I'm going to uninstall one of them and see how it goes. Unfortunately our internet service providers don't own up to any software/hardware related issues towards there items, so its left to yourself to figure out what to do.. so frustrating. Will send updated message again soon. Cheers

It means you triggered a bug in native code. In this case, in the JVM itself. I would follow the instructions and report a bug.
If this keeps happening, you could try Java 6u7 which may be more stable for you.Java 6u7 also has this problem. I will report a bug follow the instructions.

If anyone can make sense of this, I'd really appreciate it!

It was caused by something in networking. This could just be a glitch unless it's happening regularly in which case you may have a bad network card or corrupted networking extension.
