Partitioning still useful?

I had been looking at SQL Server for a new project, but have determined that record-based security will be important, so I'm now looking at Oracle (which I'm not too familiar with). I've been trying to get my head around Oracle and how it works. I think I understand RAC's and their value. And I understand why they are better than the sort of 'clustering' SQL Server uses. But, I also see that Oracle supports several types of partitioning. Is this for backwards compatibility, or is there still some relevance for partitioning if you can use RAC's? The only thing I can think of is that you might construct multiple clusters, and partition tables between clusters rather than between servers(?)

Oracle's partitioning is not intended to allow you to distribute parts of tables across multiple nodes of a RAC cluster. Partitioning is more of a logical separation-- the physically separate RAC nodes will share access to a partition of a partitioned table just the same way they will share access to a normal table.
Partitioning buys you a few different things:
- Managability: Data warehouses can greatly simplify administrative tasks with partitioning. If you need to drop data older than N days, your purge process will be a lot faster & more efficient if it merely drops a partition rather than DELETEing from the table. Your backup process will be a lot more efficient if older partitions can be moved to a read-only tablespace.
- Performance: If your query can only scan one partition, rather than scanning the whole table, that will obviously be a great benefit.

  • I'm still using Snow Leopard because heard too many horror stories about upgrading to Lion. But I can't upgrade Safari unless I upgrade OS. Is Mavericks any better than Lion?

I'm still using Snow Leopard OS because I heard too many horror stories about people upgrading their OS to Lion.  But I can't upgrade Safari anymore unless I upgrade the OS. I get messages constantly telling me I need to upgrade my web browser, and have increasing problems correctly viewing pages (like L.A. TImes, NY TImes) because Safari needs upgrading.
I can't really tell what the advantages are to upgrade to OS Mavericks or OS Yosemite because it seems most are intended for mobile apps, and I only use my desktop.
My last upgrade to SNow Leopard wiped out 2/3 of my iPhoto collection. No idea why and no fix. Macs used to be the epitome of compatibility for upgrades — not anymore.
What are my options? What issues would I encounter if I upgrade OS to Mavericks or to Yosemite? WHat are likely problems, advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks for any help sent my way.

If you do want to upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    Do a backup before installing.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

if i download windows with bootcamp does that mean i can still use Macintosh and if so how

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you installed Windows properly, you can still start in OS X and use it whenever you want. However, Boot Camp changes the startup partition to Windows, so you may note that you can't use Mac OS X.
There are two ways of starting in OS X:
    1. Hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting until you see all the bootable partitions in the screen, and choose your OS X partition.
    2. Hold the X key while your computer is starting.
If you have a iMac or a Bluetooth keyboard, make sure you hold the key after hearing the startup chime.
If you want to start in OS X by default, after starting in OS X, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose the OS X partition

  • Deleted windows partition still in MBR

Hi, I searched google all day long and found out some clues about what could be the problem (even found someone having the same problem as I have) but no solution to repair beside formatting and reinstalling from scratch.
What happened is that I had a Vista partition on my primary HD on my Mac Pro. I bought a new HD to move windows to this new HD so Mac OS can regain some space on its HD. I tried to use Winclone as mentioned on some forum but was not able to boot on the new partition after the restore process. So I did go ahead on deleting the Boot Camp partition on the first HD and reinstall from scratch on the new one. But now, when I use option at boot time to choose my start up device, I see 2 windows disk. One which is the new install, but one that lead to a missing operating system error. I did tried to remove my new HD to see if there would still be a windows option and yes, there is one and it is the missing operating system one.
So for what I understand from reading around the web is that probably, my protected MBR in the EFI partition still has the information about the Boot Camp partition that was once there. So I tried to rewrite this by creating a new Boot Camp partition on the first disk and then deleting it again in case the Boot Camp Utility had not made fully its job the first time, but with no luck. I then tried using rEFIt to sync the GPT and MBR but again, with no luck.
Also, now that I have rEFIt installed, I see 4 windows option at boot time. One legacy OS, 2 windows and one that offer me to boot windows with EFI.
So if someone as any idea, is in front of a similar problem or do know how to update/restore the EFI partition please let me know.
    Best,

    Hi,
Another little update after a couple of unsuccessful tentative to fix the situation.
I tried to use rEFIt to sync back the MBR from the GPT, but I got this error:
Status: Analysis inconclusive, will not touch this disk.
Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi
So, I tried to use Time Machine to restore my main HD after a complete repartitioning/reformat, but even after that I still got the same issue: 2 Windows partition from the start up preference pane in Vista and at boot time after holding the option key and although I only see one Windows partition under the start up preference pane in Mac OS, it tries to boot Windows from an non existing partition and display the missing operating system error.
I am now out of idea and since I don't have time for a clean install, I think I will try to live with it for now. Thanks for all suggestions.

  • Can i still use Fast Web View for PDF/A files?

Can i still use Fast Web View for PDF/A files?
In other words, just becasue I am using PDF/A, can I still select the page i need in a long document and see it before the entire file has loaded?

macjack has a very valid point, so you might want to consider a second drive for files.
To partition, you need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on restart. Select Disk Utility.
Step 1 - select the hard drive.
Step 2 - select the Partition tab.
Step 3 - select the current partition and then use the lower right corner to push up and resize the partition.
Step 4 - click the plus sign to add a partition. Then select the new partition.
Step 5 - Name the new partition and select the format. The one shown in the screen shot is generally recomended.
    Step 6 - Hit apply.
This procedure can be reversed at a later date if you find your Time Machine backup needs more space.

  • Can I still use my external HD?

I just switched over to Mac when my old IBM lap top died and I'm so happy with the switch! But I have a TM question:
Can I still use my external HD as a place to store files I don't want taking up space on my macbook?
I got the HD when my iTunes library got to big for my IBM, so now I want to continue to do the same for the Mac. I just reformatted the HD to work with TM, but can I still house my iTunes library on it? (keeping in mind that I'll probably be adding things to my iTunes sporadically
    Thanks!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You should probably partition the drive so that your iTunes library is on one partition and Time Machine is on a different partition. The way Time Machine works, it will just continue doing backups until the drive or partition is full. Then it will notify you and start overwriting the oldest backups. If your iTunes library is on the same partition, there would be the possibility that Time Machine could start overwriting the iTunes Library, which you do not want to have happen. So it would be best to either have a separate drive or a separate partition for TM.
    Good luck!

  • New G570 partitions not used?

Looking at my new G570 partition list I have 14.75 GB 100% free partition that I assume should have the recovery tools in it. Trying the OneKey Recovery program and selecting the System Recovery icon allows me to reboot into the "system recovery environment" and looks like it would complete if I hit the final "Start".
What has the laptop wasted 14.75 GB on then?

I've found that typically, on our OES linux boxes however, when I generate new certs via iManager/Repair default certifidfates, the new certs do not translate over to the cert used by httpstk/Remote Manager.
On this one server, as an example, it's still using an old cert that was issued 2011, and says it's good until 2015.
Do I have to manually export and import the new certs? (and if so, why isn't that built-in to the repair certificates function in iManager?)
Furthermore, this old cert lists no CA in the chain. We definitely had one. This isn't' the first NRM cert I've seen exhibit this behavior either.
How do I get these certs to sync up with the ones the server is actually using in eDirectory?
    Thanks
    Paul
httpstkd will use the default OES certs.
However, I've seen on MANY occasions:
    1) After repairing the SSL certs, I need to reboot the server for things to take effect
    and
    2) NRM can use LUM. LUM (namcd) has an annoying habit of sometimes not replacing the actual certificate files. In other words, when you repair the eDir SSL cert, do a namconfig -k to re-pull the SSL certs down, it won't actually overwrite the file that's already on the file system that's corresponding to the updated SSL cert. I've (many times) had to manually delete the cert files, and then re-run namconfig -k and restart namcd

  • HT204074 All of our devices have the same apple id (2 iphone 4's & 1 Windows Comp..) How can we seperate them but also allow them to still use the same itunes account?

I tried to ask a similar question before, however did not understand our issues well enough to even form a comprehensive question and the kind replies.
I apologize, unfortunately I've yet to resolve our problem.
All of our devices are under the same Apple ID & password (an IPhone 4s, an IPhone 4, and a Dell Laptop that uses Windows 7.) How in the world can
we separate them (so we can both use our free 5GB under the iCloud storage that each of our IPhone's offer, but "also" still use the same shared ITunes
    account?
As it stands right now, my son's phone (iPhone 4) is set up under our Apple ID & pw-which enables him to use the free 5gb's under the iCloud.
I cannot take advantage of the Free 5gb's iCloud on my IPhone 4s, because it's all "my info." on my son's phone (my email address & pw=what we've always used for our shared ITunes acct.)
A big fat mess I know, and don't even want to confuse things by asking about these SMTP's...1 thing at a time!
Not sure if it is still on his phone, however in trying to resolve this issue last time I set him up with a MobileMe address. I believe I entered my info back into his phone because it created a bigger mess!
Thank you in advance for any suggestions/help! It's taken me some time to gather the patience and courage to ask for help again in resolved this
    issue!

I don't know if I'm asking this all in a way that can be understood? Thanks ED3K, however that part I do understand (in the link you provided!)
What I need to know is "how" I can separate or rather create another Apple ID for my son-who is currently using "my Apple ID?" If there is a way to let him keep "all" his info on his phone (eg-contacts, music, app's, etc.) without doing a "reset?') Somehow I need to go into his phone's setting-create a new Apple ID and possibly a new password so he can still use our combined iCloud & Itunes account?
Also then letting me take back my Apple ID & password, but again allowing us (my son and I) to use the same iCloud & Itunes account? Does that make more sense??? I'm sincerely trying to get this cleared up once and for all----just need guidance from someone who has a true understanding of the whole Apple iCloud/Itunes system!
Thanks again for "anyone" that can help me!!!

  • How do I use my time capsule as a wifi extender and still use as a backup in Time Machine

I purchased a new airport extreme and want to use my existing time capsule as a wifi extender in another part of the house.  How do I set this up so that I can still use the time capsule as my backup (time machine) hard drive?

    Hello BNOLTNER,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please see the directions in the following article for configuring your extended network.  Your Time Capsule will still be seen on the network, and may still be used as a backup destination.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

  • Can I use Extreme with Time Capsule to extend my gateway router and still use Capsule as "external HD"?

Bought Airport Extreme with Time Capsule version 7.7.2 with 2 Terabytes Feb 2014. It was probably an expensive mistake, but after searching for weeks for a external hard drive, it seemed reasonably priced to just use the capsule as my external hard drive for the price I paid. Spend an hour with Apple Care to get it working-had to use ethernet cord to my iMac OS 10.8.5 processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5. I did not "need" the airport as we have a Winstream SAGEMCOM modem/router (Sagemfast 1704) But, I was desperate and about to lose my old external hard drive with literally had 3 computers worth of information on it. It had already "died" once, but got it back, so once I got the airport/capsule and was told I just paid for an expensive HD, I had no time to take it back to get something else-I had to transfer my info right then. We (Apple Care) could not get it to work as a HD wirelessly. It may be because it was being set up for the first time; I don't know. I was hoping I would get a transcript of all done so I could do it myself if needed later on, but when I looked at my email-they didn't do that. (Don't know if that is normal, I was used to other "techs" sending the email.) So now I really want to try to move my airport and "extend" our wifi as it said on the "box" that you could do...
Our Windstream router had to be placed in the lower level at the bottom of our stairs. The stairway is "open" (no door going down the steps). I want to place the Extreme at the top of the stairs so that we can use some things in our offices or not have Netflix on our TV lose connectivity when we all are on our computers.
I know I need an ethernet cord to connect directly with the modem/router to the Airport Extreme.  I don't know what I will need to do after I connect it as it was so goofy when we set it up the first time (With the app it would disappear and not show up..) But my biggest concern is will I be able to still use the capsule as my hard drive and will I be able to do it wirelessly? (Even with it connected by ethernet, every day I have to re-connect to it before I can click on anything on the hard drive. It never shows up on it's own as my old HD did. That drives me nuts.) I do back up using the Time Capsule feature as well. I appreciate any help.

I am still willing to plug in the ethernet cord to the modem/router and try it IF I was able to get a step by step instructions..
Connecting the Time Capsule (TC) to the existing Winstream by Ethernet would be the basis for a roaming type network. This type of network allows you to basically "roam" with a wireless client and connect to either router. This, in essence, would provide you with an "extended" wireless network. The Apple routers can work with just about any manufacturers' routers in this fashion.
The keys to having a successful roaming network are as follows:
The routers must be interconnected by Ethernet.
Both routers will broadcast their own Wi-Fi network, but MUST use the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type (WPA or WPA2), and wireless password.
The TC MUST be reconfigured as a bridge.
Connect a single Ethernet cable between one of the Winstream's LAN ports and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the TC.
    The basic steps are:
    Power-down the Winstream.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the TC. Leave the TC powered-down after the reset has completed.
Connect the TC to the Winstream using an Ethernet cable.
Power-up the Winstream. Wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to initialize.
Power-up the TC. Wait at least 5 minutes to allow it to initialize. (Note: Since we just reset the TC it will be performing as a wireless router that will be broadcasting an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN)
Connect your computer to the Winstream's Wi-Fi network.
Run the AirPort Utility. select the TC, and then, select Edit.
    Go to the Network tab.
Change the Router Mode option to: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Select the Wireless tab.
Verify that the Network Mode option is set to: Create a wireless network
For Wireless Network Name, enter the Wi-Fi network name used by the Winstream.
For Wireless Security, select the equivalent security type that is used by the Winstream. (Note: Use "WPA/WPA2 Personal" if the Winstream is using WPA/TKIP. Use "WPA2 Personal" is the Winstream is using WPA2/AES.
For Wireless Password, enter the same password used by the Winstream.
Select Update and allow the TC to restart.
As far as your external HD, yes you should still be able to use it as before.

  • Time Capsule with HH3 but want to still use HH3 Wi...

    Hi folks,
I'm thinking about getting an Apple Airport Time Capsule (2013 version) but need to check compatability with my HH3 first.
I've seen other posts here regarding TC and HH3 but not specifically for the configuration I want.
I only want to use the TC for backup and do NOT want to use it as a Wifi router.
I want to continue to use my HH3 for my Wifi network (mostly because I dont want to reconfigure all (10) of my computers with a new Wifi password).
I'm thinking the best way to set this up would be to switch OFF the wifi on the TC and connect it directly to the HH3 using an ethernet cable. In that setup would computers connected to the HH3 via Wifi then be able to see the TC?
Or is there a better configuration?

    Hi.
I have a Time Capsule and have it configured in a similar fashion with my HH4. I still use Airport Utility 5.6 and in the Internet section if you set the Internet Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)" it will disable DHCP and any device you connect to it will get its IP address from the HH. It will be visible to any other device on the network. As you say by switching off Wireless Mode you can continue using your HH for this, although the wireless capabilities of the time capsule can come in handy. I have used it to set up a "guest" network and I have also used it in WDS mode to use an Airport Express to extend my network to a non wireless device (PVR) rather than using homeplugs.
    Hope this helps.
    Andy.
