Patch: 8.0.5.1 on glibc-2.1 based SuSE Linux 6.2

See the top of my homepage (http://www.csn.tu-chemnitz.de/~mha/)
The package opatch.rpm there is for SuSE Linux 6.2, a glibc 2.1
based distribution. Oracle 8.0.5.1 needs to be patched if you
want to install it on glibc2.1-based Systems (however,
upgrading an already running Oracle-System from glibc2.0 to 2.1
works without any patches to Oracle - the problem is that Oracle
is relinked during installation, and it must be linked against
glibc2.0).
The package also takes care of some other bugs in the Oracle
installation process. It must be applied to the Oracle
installation
tree before installation, which means you cannot install from
CD. I don3t think this will be a problem - you should have 475MB
left
for running Oracle anyway (475MB is the size of the tree of
Oracle 8.0.5.1 Enterprose Edition)!
PS: A similar (pre-installation) patch for Oracle 8i is on the
way.
null

I would not blame ORACLE - I think the problem is
with the EGCS and the libraries.
I have emails from the linux.devel on these.
For e.g. a simple program such as
#include "stdio.h"
FILE *fp = stderr;
main() {
gives error on Redhat 6.0, Caldera 2.2!
It works on Solaris, IRIX, AIX, Redhat 5.2 and
even with Visual C++ 6!
I have had other programs such as pdksh (ksh) also
dumping on Redhat 6.0 and Caldera 2.2
(even after I compile everything from source!).
I have also had nothing but trouble with other databases
on 6.0. I think new kernels should go through a lot more
testing before being released like this.
I am also debating whether to move back to Redhat 5.2!

• Patch for Oracle

Hi all,
From where can i download p3006854_9204_LINUX.zip. I don't have metalink userid and also from google i am unable to find any information. Is there any other site from where it can be downloaded free.
Thanks in advance.
Swadhin

Thanks Nicolas,
Actually i have downloaded the Oracle software from Oracle site only which was free.
While installation i got the following error
"Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library: /tmp/OraInstall2003-10-25_03-14-57PM/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so:
symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference"
The answer to this problems on net was
"To resolve the __libc_wait symbol issue, download the patch p3006854_9204_LINUX.zip "
Can i use p3006854_10102_LINUX.zip file for Suse Linux 9.1. In the readme file it is written that it is for Red Hat Linux.
If no then which file i should use for Suse Linux.

• Glibc-patched 8.1.7.0.1 has undefined references during link

I am receiving the following errors when running 'make -f ins_rdbms install'
after installing the glibc patch for 8.1.7.0.1:
/lib/libnsl.so.1: undefined reference to `svc_getreq_poll@GLIBC_2.2'
/lib/libnsl.so.1: undefined reference to `__strndup@GLIBC_2.2'

/lib/libnsl.so.1: undefined reference to `svc_pollfd@GLIBC_2.2'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I am running SuSE Linux 7.1 and have installed all pertinent updates from
the SuSE ftp site. Installation
of the Oracle 8.1.7.0.1 distribution ran flawlessly (after I unset LANG
before running runInstaller).
I downloaded the latest 'glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz' patch from
technet.oracle.com and installed per the directions in the READMEglibc213.txt file. When
I ran 'setup_stubs.sh', everything appeared to run fine (no visible errors).
I even remembered to fix the root.sh file per the instructions from the SuSE
web site.
Yet when I attempted to build a database (via dbassist or manually), I got
the following error when running svrmgrl:
oracle@mars:~ > svrmgrl
Oracle Server Manager Release 3.1.7.0.0 - Production
Copyright (c) 1997, 1999, Oracle Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
SVRMGR>
I discovered that the reason for this was that the 'oracle' executable was
not present in $ORACLE_HOME/bin (I later discovered that a number of other
files were missing as well). Then I noticed that the 'setup_stubs.sh'
script uses 'make -i', which ignores errors. When I ran 'make -f
ins_rdbms.mk install' from $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib, I got the link errors
shown above. Of course, this explains why I don't have an 'oracle' file in
$ORACLE_HOME/bin; it was never created during the patch install.
I tried manually running all of the other relinks manually and all of them
worked with the exception of ctx. When I ran 'make -f ins_ctx.mk' from
$ORACLE_HOME/ctx/lib', I got this:
gcc -o
ctxhxx -L/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/ctx/lib/ -L/u01/app/oracle/product
/8.1.7/lib/ -L/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/lib//stubs/

make: *** [ctxhxx] Error 1
I found that the /lib/libc.so.6 library contained the necessary definitions
to these references. However, I am not sure if it is safe to add this to
the list of libraries used during the link.
What concerns me most is that I know a lot of folks have used the patch
successfully, but I cannot think of what I've done wrong. Any ideas?

In case anyone else is having this problem, here is the answer:
The problem only occurs if you include the Oracle Parallel Server option
during installation. In order to get the oracle kernel to re-link after
installing the glibc patch, you need to add -lnsl to the
$ORACLE_HOME/lib/sysliblist like so:
before: -ldl -lm -lpthread
after : -ldl -lm -lnsl -lpthread
Then relink the oracle kernel:
cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib
make -f ins_rdbms.mk install

a *very* quick guide
you can change the details to suit your environment
# = run as root
$ = run as regular user
# pacman -S abs
# abs
$ mkdir -p ~/abs/core/glibc
$ cp -R /var/abs/core/glibc ~/abs/core/glibc
$ cd ~/abs/core/glibc
$ vi PKGBUILD
modify the --enable-kernel line so it reads 2.6.18
$ makepkg
# pacman -U <your new glibc package>.xv
You might also want to add glibc to the ignorepkg line in pacman.conf. That way, you'll just be notified when a new version is out and you can repeat all of this. You don't need to resync the entire abs tree though, the following command will do it for one package
# abs core/glibc
One other tip - make sure you have a copy of the regular glibc package before making any changes just to be safe

I have followed the instructions to a tee on the Suse website on how to install 8.1.7 on Suse 7.1. I manage to install 8.1.7 EE fine, run the glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz patch, but cannot run dbassist. This is what worked for me:
Uncomment and/or modify the following line in /etc/profile.d/oracle.sh
NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8; export NLS_LANG
I also added it to the /home/oracle/.profile
When I couldn't find anything in the forums about the JNLS error I was looking at the Installation Instructions for Oracle 8.1.7 on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 7, available at:
http://www.suse.com/en/support/oracle/docs/817_sles7_install.pdf.
On page 9 it mentions /etc/profile/oracle.sh. When I saw that the NLS line was not in use I tried uncommenting it. I'm not sure whether it was uncommenting it or ADDING the line to the .profile but dbassist now runs fine. I've been able to launch it several times - each time on the first try (provided I type unset LANG before doing so). Good luck!

./so-7-pp5-bin-linux.bin -patch [path to network installation] -v -debug --> A window pop up with "INSTALL_INFO flag is missing ExitCode 9".
What does it mean?
BeforeI have patch no. 4 installed with no problem. On my second computer with Debian OS I have no problem to install patch no. 5
Next I do: Remove SO7 competely and install again. The same problem, but now I cant install an earlier patch again too.
I removed an unused earlier installation of OpenOffie also and install SO7 completly again. Nothing. I cant install any patch
What can I do?
Regards
Udo

This will probably not be much help; SO7 was unstable when installed on a system with glibc 2.3.1 (Libranet 2.8 Debian). The applications would start but would shut down after a few keystrokes. When patch #5 arrived, I installed it and noted that the instability problem was gone.
I am now wondering if the compiler used for the patch 5, which now apparently has backward compatibility with an older glibc version may be incompatible with the version used in SuSE.
NB I have reported separately another strange incompatibility with SO8 and KDE 3.2.x. SO8 segfaults under KDE but runs perfectly under other windows managers on the same system. I have reported this to Sun/SO and am awaiting a response.

• [SOLVED] Building Toilet, glibc b0rked sys with pacman --force

Solution:
Installed base-devel, which initially b0rked the system as it was far out of date (ran pacman -S base-devel --force, careful!)
However after refreshing system and installing base-devel without the associated critical failure, Toilet did in fact build.
should be an expert plumber by now.
The end.
OK, I've been on quite an adventure trying to get Toilet to build, and I'm practically at the giving up point which is pretty sad. So hopefully one of you can help me realize what I'm doing so horrible wrong. : )
Here's basically what I've done so far;
I so very much wanted Toilet installed, and here it is in AUR! https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/toilet/
Simple enough, small program. It has a 'special' dependency, this library: https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/libcaca/
No problem with CACA, pacman grabs and installs it. Pacman doesn't find Toilet, it's only in AUR, so naturally I grab the tar and build script and run makepkg. Well guess what? (note, the package script runs configure as; ./configure --prefix=/usr).
checking for CACA... no
configure: error: you need libcaca version 0.99.beta18 or later
So obviously the first question is "what version of libcaca did I install again?", should be good, we clearly have;
libcaca 0.99.beta18
OK. So I maybe the script can't find the files, or they aren't there? Possibly the install went awry, so I check /usr/lib, /usr/include, /usr/local/lib, /usr/local/include, all the caca files are there, headers, libs, looks good.
I'm confused.
So I go to the Toilet website and they assure if you run their build process it'll work, which involved executing ./bootstrap then ./configure, but bootstrap requires automake > 1.5.
No problem! I'll grab that from the repo.
pacman -S automake, returns automake 1.12.5.
Crap.
OK, find, I'll grab this from AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/automake-1.9/
makepkg, package created successfuly! ... but wait, I don't have a xz file as a result in my working directory, so how exactly do I get pacman to install that?
Even if I got automake 1.9 installed there's no guarantee it'd install Toilet all of a sudden, that's just a last resort anyway.
I tried other ./configure options to try and force the script to see libcaca, no success.
So from this point forward you don't even want to know what I tried, I'll lightly mention that I tried moving the caca header files to the Toilet src/ directory, changed all the source files there to reference the header in the current dir, tried to modify the makefile's and configure scripts to force it to see the file by writing absolute paths where I thought necessary... to say the least that didn't work,mostly because the config/makefiles which are auto generated are a labyrinth of complexity that I couldn't understand after 3+ hours of crawling through.
The configure script is cryptic enough that I can't actually tell how it's determining the version of libcaca, I would have just echo'd out stuff around the condition statements to see what it's doing, so I've decided finally that apparently I'm an idiot, so I'm going to stop getting no where and ask for help. : )
Why would the Toilet ./configure not find libcaca in arch? What else could I do to try and get Toilet installed?
I hope someone here has some ideas.

Something went horribly wrong when I pacman -S base-devel... no commands work, at all.

I can echo and exit however.

• Glibc2.1 (RedHat 6) Patch Available from Oracle

I found a glibc2.1 patch for Oracle 8.0.5.1 on the
ftp.oracle.com server (/pub/www/otn/linux). It's dated June 2,
1999. Filename is glibcpatch.tgz.
Here's a snip from the README that's in the same directory:
Oracle 8.0.5 certified on GLIBC 2.1 system (e.g., RH 6.0)
Below are instructions for the patch which certifies Oracle 8.0.5
on Linux distributions that use glibc 2.1 (e.g. Redhat 6.0). The
RPMS that will allow rebuilding a package under a glibc 2.0
environment on a glibc 2.1 distribution are part of a
compatibility suite included in the Red Hat linux 6.0. They may
be downloaded as described below.
The RPMS should work fine on most glibc 2.1 based distributions
(e.g. Redhat, Caldera, SuSE). Debian users may have to use a
program called 'alien' that knows how to install RPM packages.
The same program might be available to Slackware users.
For existing 805 installations, you may selectively relink
offending executables from their respective product directories
instead of applying the patch glibcpatch.tgz. This must be done
after installing the compatibility RPMS from Redhat. e.g. to
relink 'svrmgrl', issue the following command in
$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib directory to use i386-glibc20-linux-gcc
instead of gcc:
% gmake -f ins_rdbms.mk isvrmgrl CC=i386-glibc20-linux-gcc
LINK=i386-glibc20-linux-gcc

• [SOLVED]How to patch the kernel? And other questions

Like the same user who started this thread I'm suffering from hibernation resuming troubles using kernel 2.6.38. In that thread was posted a soluttion that involves patching the kernel.
The patch to apply is this:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … e3e9fc8684
Waiting for the bug to be corrected and a new version supplied is not an option, because this laptop is my main computer and I heavly rely on hibernation.
Here's my trouble now. I don't know if it is possible to patch without recompiling the whole kernel, or it has to be compiled with that patch applied. I have seen the archlinux's wiki guide about compiling the kernel, but found nothing about applying patches (maybe I didn't searched with enought depth).
In case there is needed a full compilation, should I use the vanilla kernel, the Arch Linux one or any of the AUR ones (I said AUR because they're the first that came to my mind)? Should i expect a performance gain with this (apart from fixing the hibernation bug)?
Maybe i'm just doing a bunch of dumb questions, and the only thing I need is to search deeply on the wiki. In that case, please tell me. If not, I rather get some answers around kernel patching and / or compiling questions.
Edit: In addittion, it is possible that all this questions are just newbie ones, I don't know, but as I am willing to learn from this I will appreciate any info or documentation about it.
Thank you.

From the source tree (/usr/src/linux-whatever) execute
patch -p1 < /path/to/fix.patch
then recompile kernel from the source tree.
Basically that consists of executing the following commands from the source tree:
make menuconfig
make
make modules_install
cp -v System.map /boot/System.map-CUSTOM
cp -v arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-CUSTOM
mkinitcpio -k 2.6.38-CUSTOM -g /boot/kernel-CUSTOM.img
and you need to add menu entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst
-k 2.6.38-CUSTOM should corespond to /lib/modules/2.6.38-CUSTOM (replace 2.6.38-CUSTOM with the name of your module directory, name depends on the kernel version and suffix that you gave in menuconfig). Regarding kernel configuration in menuconfig - I can't help you, you could use arch stock kernel config (zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux-whatever/.config)
I do these kind of things this way - maybe someone else have a more elegant solution.

We are installing the Oracle on x86_64 using Novell SUSE SLES 10.

Dear Hannes

Hai,
Please check the oraInst.loc file has the correct entry or not.
File oraInst.loc should have the entries similar to the below:
inventory_loc=/oracle/SID/oraInventory
inst_group=dba
Check the permissions of this file as well, atleast the file should have read access to others.
Also check the permissions of /oracle/SID/oraInventory, it should be owned by ora<sid> user and group dba.
