Pause before sounds are played

I just noticed that I posted *[an iMac question|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2054360]* in the wrong forum. I didn't get anywhere in that forum. Here's updated question text for the iMac folks:
I have a 24" iMac6,1, late 2006, plastic case, 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB memory.
If no sound has been played in the last 30 seconds or so then there's about one second delay before a sound can be played. This is bad enough but the delay also holds up whatever app is causing the sound. This is really annoying.
The problem has been around a long time: see [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6689782] and also [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3479343] but I haven't found a solution.
For example, I use the terminal a lot (unix sw development etc.). Filename and command completion using the tab key are pretty important to being able to work fast. The shell beeps if there's an ambiguity in the attempted completion. That's a normal part of work. But when it inserts 1 second delay in your typing, that's really annoying.
Similar problems in Xcode. System beeps are common. And typing stops while Xcode waits for the sound HW to wake up.
There's a really old app called "keep sound awake" (or something like that) designed to deal with this problem. It plays a silent sound periodically to stop the sound device from entering sleep mode. But it also prevents the system from sleeping, which is not good, is ancient and buggy. I can't use it.
It's still driving me nuts. Does anyone have a clue what to do about it?

Try zapping the P-RAM

also are you using external speakers?

  • My game sounds are played with noticable delay!

    hi.
    i'm writing a graphical game by java2D API .
i have many threads to run,so when i use an AudioClip
object to play my desirable sounds (.wav files),it would play
    with a noticable delay.
i decided to use windows APIs through the JNI.
    but i must first write a c++ code (.h file)then convert it to a
    .dll .
i don't know how i can call "sndPlaySound" function of "winmm.dll"
    library in C++ code.
    can you help me please?
    or another recommendation!
    thanks a lot.
    bye.

Generally it is not hard to do such things. sndPlaySound takes apparently a string and an int to specify the sound and how to play it. You would simply define a native method in your class, use javap to create the native header file and then make an implementation for that native method. The method would take a string and an int and convert them to the format expected by the sndPlaySound function, then just call it and you are done.
I'd suggest passing an array of bytes rather than a Java string. Since a C string is really an array of bytes it is easier to work with it this way. You can do things like converting a Java string to bytes and adding the required NULL terminator from Java code where it is easier to do.
Unless you don't know any C++ coding at all, in which case this could be hard to accomplish.

  • Sounds are paused in OSX Mavericks, usually in Safari. App Nap?

    Hi guys,
For the past time I have been noticing strange behavior on my MBPr (13", Late 2012, i5 2.5Ghz, 8GB RAM) running on 10.9.3 (Mavericks). It seems like sounds are being held back. It usually happens when sounds are played in a non-active tab in Safari (I don't use other browsers unless I need it for testing or when a site/webapp requires Chrome or Firefox, so I can't confirm any such behavior in other browsers). What happens, for example, is that I recieve messages on Facebook (which are displayed as notifications in OSX). Sometimes I recieve messages from multiple users. If I then switch tabs to Facebook a few minutes later, I hear the "new message" sound from Facebook multiple times in a row, once for each message recieved.
Another example is from a few weeks back. There is a website in the Netherlands called iBood (it's in other European countries too). Once in a while they have a so-called "iBood hunt". What happens is that they offer a single product at a time at a really attractive price (usually) but the products usually sell out within a minute. When a product sells out a new product is displayed. There is a third-party website that offers a auto-refresher (http://iboodhunt.1dagskoopjes.nl). Whenever a product sells out the website produces a *boink* sound, when a new product is available a *ding ding* bell sound is played. However, If I open the page during a hunt and switch to a different tab, all goes quiet. If I then switch back to the tab I get a flashflood of sound: *ding ding* *ding ding* *ding ding* *boink* boink*. This effectively destroys the purpose of the sounds which are supposed to alert me when a new product is placed so I can quickly look if the offer interests me, but I don't need to stare at the tab the whole time, allowing me to do other things in the mean time.
However, today I observed similar behaviour, except it wasn't in a closed tab. This morning I had sent an e-mail with Mail. A few hours later ( ! ) I plugged in my headphones to listen to some music. As soon as  I plugged in my headphones, with Mail running in the background but not open (CMD+W'ed), I all of a sudden heard the "finnished checking for mail" sound a couple of times in a row and then the "flying away airplane" sound you hear when you have sent an email.
I'm guessing that this behavior is being caused by some/one of the power saving features in Mavericks. I don't want to deactivate app nap for a whole bunch of apps on my computer just to not have lag in my sounds. I was wondering if more people have experienced such behavior and if they have found any fix?
    Cheers

  • Audio pop/crack when a sound is played!

Hello! I have a 2008 Macbook and i get a loud audio crack or pop when a sound is played. For example: I turn the volume up with the keyboard and when i push the key it hangs for a short time then comes the crack and the usual sound that is played. After that i can click the key again and it doesnt crack anymore but if i wait some seconds and push the key again then it cracks again with the first click. I installed an older osx version on a different partition with all updates and have same problem there. I did a vram reset and that didnt change anything. Someone please tell me how to fix that problem.

I think that's just the way it is. I have it, too, although it is not very loud and I have gotten used to it. I read something about this some time ago - some chip or circuit goes idle when no sounds are played for a while and when the chip/circuit gets activated a pop occurs. Here's a long cantankerous thread on the subject; there are bound to be others.

Error -36 is an I/O error, which could indicate a damaged Catalog file, corrupted bitmap or (even worse) a dying HD.
I would recommend to run Disk Utility and perform a 'Verify disk'.
If lots of errors are found, try to save as much files as possible to another disk.
Then perform a 'Repair disk'. Repairing a catalog file or bitmap might cause loss of files, that's why I recommend to verify first and save the files, before repairing.

A small update to this issue....
I have been trawling the forums to find an answer but to no avail...
And... I've tried exporting and bouncing individual stems and the full session, either by muting all bar the stem or soloing the stem.....and still nothing.
Same problems.....everything is audible in audition but nothing plays on playback.
Since the 'prelisten' channel strip is Solo safe this would indicate that you have a track or channel strip soloed somewhere else, out of sight. Are the Mute buttons on your channel strips blinking?

  • Updates to itunes 10.6.1.7 and quicktime 7.7.1 all the levels in any sound I play on my pc are distorted.

Since updating to itunes 10.6.1.7 and quicktime 7.7.1 (updated both at the same time so not sure which is causing the issue) all the levels in any sound I play on my pc are distorted. The main track in the sound file will be muffled or really soft such as the main vocals in a song. The secondary tracks (harmonies instrumentals etc) are really loud. I thought it was just iTunes, however EVERYTHING has been affected since this update. Windows media player and games, all with the same issue.
Any one experienced this and have any feeback on how to fix it?

problem solved after updating itunes to 10.6.3

  • Sounds not playing on device all of a sudden (was working before)

    Hello All,
I am experiencing a weird problem: when I build my app to the device I don't hear any sounds that are played with AudioServices, Strange thing is i DO hear it when it's built to the simulator. What's even stranger is that the sounds used to play fine when I built to device. I verified that I didn't change the code or anything by building a backup copy of the app (that was stable) and the sound again did not work on the device despite nothing having been changed. Is there some kind of global setting in xcode that I changed or something? I tried resetting/restoring the iPhone too, no help. Thanks.

Sound files were too big for regular audio services; i had t use the audio que features (as in the Crash Landing sample app)

  • HT1711 Why do some of my songs shut off before they are finished playing?

Why do some of my songs stop playing before they are finished?

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • Logic Pro 9 When I open a file which contains a composition of many midi and audio tracks, no sounds play or some tracks are playing the wrong sounds. The project was working perfect when it was saved and closed down.

Does anyone else understand what is happeneing, its like all the tracks and plugins are confused and are playing all the wrong sounds if at all. I've checked the audio setting which seem fine but cant understand where it all goes horribly wrong.  Thanks

Is it just a Logic problem; can you for-instance play audio in iTunes trough the Tascam? And what about new projects; you get audio there?

Upgrading to firefox 5 and updating my plug-ins helped a bit. Frog is less 'sticky' now, but it's not solved the problem. Java needs to be up to speed or the frog goes into stasis....

  • Songs are "playing" but no sound?

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4s running IOS 7.0.4 and running spotifz version 0.9.3.212. Some songs play fine in my playlist but others are "playing" but there is no sound. Like I said this happens on random songs. Inheritly, when I try to play the song that is malfunctioning online using the phone (going to the artist's page) the same problem occurs (probably because spotify is trying to play the local file).
    Any idea what's going on?
    thanks for your help!

@AndrewAbo - it is correct that the "no sound" issue is all over the community here. You would normally assume that the Spotify development team would pay attention to such a critical issue that so many users encounter.
My suggestion to anyone would be to log this issue through this link so the issue will get on the radar. For now, it is trying to get used to skipping tracks each time at random the playlist stops playing.

  • I put iPod on "songs, shuffle" but the shuffle isn't random!  Same artist repeats often, same songs repeat before other songs are played.  With over 2000 songs on the iPod, I shouldn't be getting repeats very often.  Anybody else?

Shuffle is not perfect. What you are experiencing is normal.

  • When watching a video on youtube, if the monitor blanks for power saving, when it resumes, the video area is green (not refreshed) but the sound keeps playing.

    Steps:
    1. Video is correctly playing on youtube
    2. Since I'm just watching and not pressing any key or moving the mouse, the display will blank for power saving after some minutes
    3. I move the mouse to wake it
    4. The video area is solid green, while the sound continues playing
    5. If I switch tasks, the area from the other task gets painted over the video area, it seems like the video are is never refreshed after the suspend/wake

    Hello,
Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
