PC and Mac not talking - why?

I have a PC running XP and a G4 running OS 10.5.8 They are both connected to an ethernet hub which is in turn connected to a cable modem. Both machines hit the internet fine, but neither seems to know the other exists.
File sharing is turned on for both machines, both are on the same Workgroup and each has a designated shared folder set to allow all users to read and write to it. When I browse the PC network connections the Mac is nowhere to be seen. When I "Connect to Server" and browse from the Mac, the PC isn't there. I've tried connecting via IP address but no luck, though I was a little fuzzy on how to do it and it could've been me. I'd post screen shots of my settings, but there are so many that I figured I'd start with this brief explanation first.
I've had both machines for some time and have never had a problem connecting in the past. It's always been as easy as setting a mutual workgroup, sharing a folder on my PC and browsing for it from my Mac, but since I upgraded to OS 10.5 I've been unable to make it work. I'd be happy to post specific settings, but the basics are sound (above) and I'm not sure what advanced settings are relevant.
I see a lot of people posting this problem on several forums, but no one seems to have a fix. There seems to be a feeling in the community that this could be a bug, so I don't want to pull my hair out if this has nothing to do with my set up. This problem is a huge inconvenience and has me constantly transfering files to and from flash drives and CDs to move them between machines. I need this to work. Is anyone else still having these problems? Has anyone figured it out? Much thanks in advance to anyone who can get my machines back together.

One more thing - When I upgraded to Leopard I also did a fresh install of XP on the PC and switched antivirus software, at a friend's recommendation, from Norton to AVG. I searched online to see if anyone was reporting networking issues with AVG, but I don't see any. I thought maybe it was a firewall setting of some kind.

iMac with SL 10.6.2, homebuilt desktop PC Windows XPpro SP3, all updates current, Norton Internet Security 2010 on the PC. Same problem as many describe, was able to see shares on XP with MAC, then suddenly failed about the same time as upgraded to SL on the MAC. Could see the XP workstation, ping it, but unable to see folder contents. Tried just about all the fixes in these forums (using IP instead of computer name, including port, etc) but nothing worked. Was quick to blame SL but I was wrong.
Brought home a Dell laptop with a fresh virgin install of XP pro, SP3, all updated, no aftermarket software. Hooked it up to my network, made some shares and lo, the MAC could see them no problem, so it appeared to be something on my desktop PC. Found a lot of threads discussing AV intrusion detection, port blocking, etc. so I tried disabling everything, no joy. Then I tried connecting to the desktop PC with the Dell laptop. Big surprise! Could see the shares but when I tried to view contents got windows error "...not enough server storage is available to process this command". Definitely something wrong on the desktop PC.
Searched Microsoft KB and found article 177078 describing this error. A parameter called "IRPStackSize" needs to be created and increased in value. Requires a fairly simple addition into one of the registry keys. Not hard but be sure to back up your registry first. I set the value to "18". Be sure and carefully read the KB article. I have no idea what this parameter does but apparently it's used by AV software (Norton and others).
After a reboot of the desktop PC everything is perfectly normal again. MAC sees the PC shares just as before. So does the Dell laptop.
IMHO I think there are several problems going on at once with all the SL network issues, but I also think that many are caused by AV software. Norton must have pushed down something about the same time I upgraded to SL that caused the IPRStackSize parameter to no longer be big enough. Anyway, took me several days to find this but the fix was actually pretty easy once I found it. If you try this please post results.

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting

Battery has died and am not sure why

Hi, my macbook battery has completely died and I cant work out why, I accidently let it run to empty and now when it only works when connected to the adaptor and the battery icon in the top right simply has a X in it and it doesnt register that theres a battery there. The battery is securly fastened and wasnt removed at all before this happened, Ive taken it off and wiped the connectors, but there was no obstruction of anykind and its not been near water or anything. Can any one help, will I need to take it to an apple store or is there something else I can do? Many thanks

weird. I don't know what to say.
it doesn't matter if you leave it to die because no matter what it should work.
I'm a student with a low health battery caused from constant use so my laptop dies completely 5 times a day and the battery still works for 4 years.
leaving the battery to die should be a problem.
the X definitely means your battery is dead. this could have been caused by a sudden electric shock, maybe while you were away. since you already cleaned your battery it means it is still dead. get a new one.

Ipad and mac not syncing with icloud

I am unable to sync my photos and contacts from my ipad with my Mac through icloud. The ipad and mac both have the latest update.

For icloud email on your device, you must have icloud turned on, but also have the Mail app set up to connect to icloud. In Settings>Mail, Contacts,... look in the Mail section under Accounts. You must set up your icloud email account there in order to use the Mail app to read and send emails.

Igoogle costantly redirects and will not open why? Cookies are ok.

Whenever I enter igoogle in the address box or click on igoogle in the bookmark bar a box appears with a message stating, redirected, do not try again as it will not work or words to that effect. How do I access igoogle? Tracking cookie are not blocked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The setting in "Tools > Options > Advanced > General" is meant as an accessibility feature, as you can see by the label of that section, so that people with disabilities or people who use screen readers do not get confused and is not meant as a safety protection to stop redirecting.

ITunes download plays on iPad and Mac, not on iPod?

Music download plays on iPad and MacBook, not on iPod. Skips out, or skips to next song.

Assuming the songs play fine in yor iTunes library
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Why are my ITunes playlists on my iPhone, iPad and Mac not the same?

I don't understand the ITunes. I have an Iphone, Ipad and new Mac Probook with Retina Display. When I add songs to ITunes my playlists do not synchronize. I have to manually delete the playlist on my Mac, create new ones, then synch with USB to each device. Isn't there an easier way to manage the playlists?

You can't drag and drop content onto smart playlists, only regular ones.

I am on Mac OS 10.6.5 and have downloaded Firefox 3.6.12. There is no 'options' under Tools. There used to be and do not know why it is no longer. Anyone else have the problem? Thanks, Chris

I have tried a couple of times and same result.

1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
2) Deleted the existing profile;
3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.

[TroubleShooting]Continuity Wi-Fi issue. iPhone and mac not on the same wifi network

Ive been following this and other forums since Yosemite came out few weeks back & i can see many other people are having this issue as well.
The issue is that I'm not able to make/receive calls on my MBP using my iPhone via continuity.
Ive tried all of the possible solutions made here and elsewhere on how to resolve this issue. [playing about with settings and iCloud]
When I'm at home all of the handoff and continuity features work apart from making and receiving calls. Tells me my mac and iPhone are not on the same wifi network, even though they are.
Now, the solution?
Now this is where tourbleshooting comes in. Ive taken my mac and to my homegirls house & all of the features worked including phonecalls, without changing anything, except?? THE ISP and the router at her house.
Personally i live in London, Uk. At home i have sky, and my girl has TalkTalk.
So im 99.9% sure this has nothing to do with the OS X, but rather its the ISP or the router.
Now I'm asking for help from anyone that understands the ISP's and routers, on what kind of issue there might be. Im no computer wiz kid, but I'm guessing it could be something that has to do with the NAT type. (Call of duty on ps3 haha) At my house its moderate and my homegirls - open? could that be the issue? if so are there any router settings i can play about to see if that solves the issue?

IPhone Indbox and .Mac not in Sync

Just did some house keeping on my iPhone inbox (moved messages and deleted some). When I logged onto my .Mac account through a browser, the mail I moved into folders has been moved, but they are still in my inbox as well. Why doesnt my inbox in .mac through a browser not reflect whats on the iphone inbox, I thought they were supposed to be in sync?

They are, you can check this when launching Mail.app on your desktop Mac. It's just a display issue on the webmail client.
Delete or move any message in or out of your inbox on the webclient, and the view will be correct.

Server logging duplicate identifier on topic error for push_notify and apspd - not sure why or how to stop

Need some help here -
I have been running OS X Server for a little over two years now on a MacMini and recently have found that the Server app is eating resources - pegging the CPU to 100% but not really sure why.
The system is supporting Filing sharing - not a big deal, two websites - again not a big deal, and Mail for two different domains - and appropriate DNS records.
All has had been good. As this Mac Mini is also the iTunes library repository for the house, if it is taxed for some reason I see that show up in delays getting movies - and thus found that the server was maxing out the CPU.
What I see in the Log files is not helping much - I am getting repeats of the same apparent error --

This goes on and on - then something else gets logs, and then this starts up again as the logging event of interest.
As I do review my logs from time to time, I am pretty certain that it was not doing this prior to the upgrade.
Any help and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Well I never setup an Exchange account, but with other accounts, when you go into Settings, then Mail, Calendar etc Settings. I can go into any of my mail accounts setup and there is a flip switch to just turn off. It leaves all the settings to be there later when you turn that account back on, but turning it off fully removes it from the Mail app.

IMessage on iPad and Mac not working since 9/9/14

All of a sudden, iMessage stopped working since 9/9/14. So here is the weird thing. It is working on my iPhone 5S, BUT I cannot send any iMessages to my mother in Austria. The weird thing is, my mother still can send iMessages to other friends, just not to me, not even on my iPhone. The other weird thing is, i cannot send any iMessages anymore on my Mac or iPad. It says on my Mac that ".... XXXXXX is not registered with iMessage", while I can send an iMessage from my iPhone 5S without any problems to that number.
So I tried EVERY trick in the book: Restart, logging out everywhere, Cmd+alt+p+r reset, resetting Mac, resetting iPhone and iPad, nothing worked (so please do not tell me anything with logging out and back in, resetting etc., I appreciate any help, but I already did this in any possible combination).
Clearly, there is something wrong with the iMessage servers. What else can I do?

I'm thinking there's some bug involving the window.open function that BC attaches to your login link. You have a few options. Here's what the facebook login button outputs:

I think if it is the window.open function that is messed up in iOS. It could be that the target "_fblogin" isn't valid with that underscore or maybe even that there is an empty value for the first parameter in window.open which hshould be the url to open.
You might be able to take advantage of BC's {system_visitorDeviceClass} module which will output "desktop", "phone" or "tablet" depending on their device. You can write some javascript that if it's a phone or tablet you can remove the onclick attribute on the link so it just uses the HREF instead like a normal link. The link's href attribute will still work since it leads to the Facebook permission dialog but in the same browser window. You could try:

If you insert this at the bottom of your page that has the login button or the bottom of your page template it could work, you'd bypass (remove) the onclick for phones or tablets and use the regular link URL which should lead to the permissions FB prompt anyway-- just not using window.open to do it.

alright so i have my image that i have traced, its all chucnked up into groups (hair, eyes, etc...) but if i try to select say the hair and try to fill it, it does it really bad

i do not understand what important piece of information i missed, i thought i could just trace something and fill in the colors, apparently its not that simple.
this programs works in shapes right? i dont get why that even though everything looks closed off, and is connected to my knowledge, i cant get it to fill
(at least correctly)
cuz it feel like could do this in flash in no time, but i'd like to do this kind of work using programs that are specifically designed for it.
any sort of help would be greatly appreciated.

The tracing results in separate paths. The straight lines show where the open filled paths start and end.
In the first sample, you may drag with the Direct Selection Tool over the top where the straight lines meet and Ctrl/Cmd+J to join the the paths; you may do the same elsewhere to create continuous/closed paths (hopefully, you will only drag over the two endpoints, otherwise you will have to find and delete superfluous Anchor Points).
This may be better than just cheating with the Live Paint Tool because the artwork becomes more coherent.
