Pc to macbook transfer

I bought a macbook. First time mac user. My former home computer is a dell desktop pc. It got infected and started shutting itself down after a few minutes so I took it as an opportunity to buy a mac.
There are hundreds of photos and years of emails on microsoft outlook I would like to transfer over but I do not have the chops to do that.
I own a macbook, time capsule and microsoft office which has microsoft entourage. I also signed up for that mac protection service.
Can somebody point me in the right direction?
That you people.

I thought I would post up how I transfered my photo's over to my Mac. I understand this sort of thing is second nature to most of you guys but it was new to me. The following is for and beginner computer person who stumbles unto this site.
To transfer photo's from my desktop ps with XP.
I bought a 4 gig tiny plug in thing called a thumb, but others seem to call it a memory stick.
I plugged it into a hole in the front of the pc.
On the pc I clicked on 'start', then 'my computer' then 'pictures'.
On the top of the pc I clicked on the top tabs until the drop down gave me a chance to click on 'select all'.
Then I right clicked on my mouse and selected copy.
Then I went down to the 'start' again and clicked on it and selected 'my computer'.
I was looking for a symbol that identified the 'thumb' or memory stick. When I identified it I clicked on it, when it opened up I put my cursor in the blank window and right clicked again and selected 'paste'.
I then started copying the photo folders.
It looked like it was going really well until it got close to the end. I ran out of room. Arrrrrgh
Not one to panic I selected all the files already copied on the memory stick and deleted them.
I went back to the my pictures file on the pc and did some much needed edits. I ended up deleting not needed videos and photos.(Note, a larger memory stick would work)
I then repeated the above process and Bob's your uncle.
I them took the memory stick out of the pc put it in the mac and a few clicks later and the photos started copying.

  • New Macbook - transfer previous data from Ext HD

    Hello -
Before my little iBook died, I transferred its data to a LaCie external hard-drive.
I now have a new Macbook and want all my old stuff e.g. emails, music etc transferred from the external hard-drive.
I copied the old stuff using Carbon Copy Cloner but it won't let me select my new Macbook as a target folder.
How do I transfer my stuff?
Many thanks if you're able to help..
    Dem

If your external HD shows up on your desktop, you should just manually drag the files you want on to your new Macbook. I would not want to import something else that could cause a conflict with the new computer. YOu should have an idea what to move over. Mostly your home folder items and extra applications. If yu find out you forgot something, you can go back to your HD to get it. Good luck!

  • DAT recordings MacBook transfer

    Hi,
what would be the best (i.e. lossless) way to transfer my DAT recordings from my DAT recorder
    http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4231062111.pdf
    to my MacBook?
    Thank you very much

i think you need a toslink to mini-toslink cable...
    http://www.amazon.com/6ft-Toslink-Mini-Cable/dp/B000FMXKC8
...or if you have a toslink cable, there's also an adaptor to mini plug...
    http://www.amazon.com/TOSLINK-TO-OPTICAL-MINI-ADAPTER/dp/B0002MQGRM
using an adaptor adds another air-glass-air interface, but as long as everything is clean this shouldn't matter for a short connection

  • IPhoto/Hard Drive/New Macbook/Transfer?

    Hi Folks
I have a problem I'm not sure how to go about tackling.
I have just bought a new Macbook. On my old Macbook, I have had my iPhoto Library on an external hard drive. I want to be able to do the same thing on my new Macbook, using the same hard drive where all the photo's are stored, without disturbing the photo's. The hard drive used is also partitioned into three sections, just in case that is of any relevance. (iPhoto, music, and miscellaneous files)
I would greatly appreciate any advice as to how to go about this. Please explain in laymans terms, as I'm a bit stupid.
    Many thanks
    Gary.

Simple. You not clear as to what you want
If you want to use the existing set up on your new computer unmount and disconnect the EHD from to old computer and connect it to the new computer, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to point to the EHD
If you want to duplicate the set up connect both hard drives to your new computer, partition the new EHD and drag the thing you want to it, unmount and disconnect the old EHD and move it back to the old computer and on the new computer option launch iPhoto pointing to the EHD

  • Lost Applications after Macbook transfer

I recently bought a new mac, and i restored the contents of my old macbook to this one. The new mac had updated Apps such as iPhoto keynote etc. How do i get those back now that I've restored my system? since updating or getting those apps now costs me £10 for iphoto for example
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Savage854,
when MacBook Pros came with grey installation DVDs, the iLife apps were on the second grey DVD. Now that they don’t come with any installation discs, the iLife apps are recoverable by downloading them via the Mac App Store, even though you didn’t buy them through the Mac App Store.
I’ll repeat my previous question: have you tried holding down the Option key as you select the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store, to see if it that will allow you to redownload your new Mac’s iLife apps gratis?

  • How do I transfer an App store purchase from my MacBook to my iPad-WITHOUT an Internet connection?

I live on a boat in an anchorage. My iPad won't connect to the wifi in the anchorage; my MacBook Pro, with an external radio, will make the connection (sometimes). I want to purchase a couple of apps from the App Store and download them to my computer.  I won't be able to connect the iPad to the Internet--ever--but I can of course connect it via USB to the MacBook Pro.  Can I
    - purchase the apps from the App store
    - download the apps to my MacBook Pro
    - disconnect the MacBook from the Internet (it costs about $1 per minute for my connection)
    - sync the iPad to the MacBook
    - transfer the newly purchased apps from the computer to the iPad
Just a reminder--I _can't_ connect the iPad, ever, to the Internet.  The signal just won't reach that far.  I don't want to take either the computer or the iPad on a (wet) dinghy ride to try to get close enough to the wifi hotspot for the iPad to connect (maybe).  Both the iPad and the MacBook Pro are registered to the same ITunes account, but there isn't any way to connect the iPad to iTunes central for their servers to confirm this--only the MacBook Pro can be connected.
I also don't want to erase any info on the iPad--I have waypoints, navigation info, documents, etc., stored in various apps. Do I have to sync first to avoid losing this data?  (Hope it's not cloudy tomorrow and those solar panels will be pulling some amps!)
    Thanks,
    Sue
PS--I have OS 10.6.8  and iTunes 11.0.1 on the MacBook; iOS 6.0.1 on the iPad.

Yes, you should be able to buy/download apps from the iTunes app store on your Mac and then sync them to the iPad - neither the iPad nor the Mac should need to be connected to the internet to sync the apps over to the iPad
If the iPad hasn't been synced to that computer before then you may find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • IMovie '08 Capacity Full and Cannot Transfter DVD's into Macbook

I recently purchased a 13" Macbook Unibody off eBay. The unit is in good shape and the previous owner has installed a Zagg Invisible Shield over the entire Macbook and the battery holds a full charge. I bought the Macbook to use editing some old VHS footage I had converted to DVD.
When I try to import a DVD to my desktop so I can edit it using iMovie '08, I get the error "Unable to create 'DVD Video Recording.dmg' (Input/Output Error). At the bottom of the screen it says DVD Video Recording Capacity 2.1 GB
    Avaiable 0 Bytes
    Used 2.1 GB
    Number of Files 4,293,886,887
The Space Utilized indicates: 20.09 GB and Space Free: 277.69 GB. When I received the Macbook I inserted the Applications Install DVD and entered my personal info. I thought this was the clean install you are referring to?
When I purchased the item, the previous owner stated the only blemish was a dead pixel at the bottom of the screen and he showed a picture of it in his add. After re-installing the applications DVD, this one dead pixel is no longer there. I don't know if this is a clue, but I am including all the info I can.
I checked out System Memory in the Activity Monitor and it indicates
    Free:2.97GB ; VM Size: 31.57 GB
Wired: 414.92 MB Page Ins: 167.48 MB
Active: 322.36 MB Page Outs: 0 Bytes
Inactive: 45.57 MB Swap Used: 0 Bytes
    Used: 782.80 MB
When I click on Disk Activity in indicates:
Reads In: 34065 Data Read: 1.4 GB
Writes Out: 11885 Data Written 703.89 MB
Read In/Read Out and Data Read/Data Written all say 0 Bytes
When I double clicked on Activity Monitor it indicates:
Real Memory Size: 18.43 MB (this fluctuates between 18.39 and 18.50 MB)
Virtual Memory Size: 420.77 MB/421.00 MB
    Shared Memory Size: 0 Bytes
Private Memory Size: 8.54 MB/8.71 MB
    Virtual Private Memory: 42.45MB/42.67MB
Why do these numbers fluctuate every second or two?
Why won't my Macbook Transfer DVD's into the hardrive so I can edit them with iMovie? Thank you for your help.
    Curtis Bradley, R.Ph.

have you tried my workaround for importing from DVD?
    CLICK
.. ok, works only in 95% .. some people complained not all files get converted with this method.. haven't found out why..

  • How do I put a disc in my iMac?

I have software on a disc that i need on my mac. There's no dvd/cd slot.. can i put it on my macbook & transfer it maybe?

    Justine84,
If you don't mind saying, what is the software?
I ask because there are very few modern software packages that are shipped on DVDs any more.  You should first check that the software version on the DVD is still compatible with you current Mac.  If it is compatible, then you should first check the manufacturer's website and see if they offer a downloadable version.  Most modern applicaitons are offered as downloads at this point.
Also, if the software happens to be something that came with a printer, camera, scanner, etc. then I would suggest that you likely don't need the software at all.
With a few more details we might be able to provide a specific solution for the particular software.

  • Trying to understand WDS

    Hi all,
I'm using three AirPort Extremes to form a WDS. For the sake of brevity, I'll abbreviate their function and MAC addresses as:
    Main14
    Relay07
    Remote2C
All three airports are run in Bridge mode.
Main14 is at the north end of my home. It is connected by ethernet cable to my DLink router. Main14 is set up as the WDS Main and it has been told that there are two remotes, Relay07 and Remote2C.
Relay07 is at the south end of my home. It has been told that the main WDS is Main14 and that there is one remote, Remote2C.
Remote 2C is in an outbuilding south of my home. It has been told that the WDS main is Main14.
    I'm puzzled by two things:
    1) If I pick up my MacBook, fire up Airport Utility and open three config windows, one for each Airport, and click the wireless client option so I can see what clients are being served by each Airport, and beginning at the north end of my home, I start walking south. When I'm next to the main WDS, I see that Main14 is serving the MacBook at a 54 rate. As I walk away from the main toward the relay (and even further south, the remote), the rate drops. I walk past the relay and the rate to the main keeps dropping. I get out to the outbuilding and I see the MacBook transfer from the main to the remote, Remote2C, and the rate goes back up to 54. The MacBook never transfers to the relay. Why not?
    2) Going back to Airport Utility, and again with windows open for each Airport and looking at wireless clients, I can see the three Airports talking to each other. As a typical example,
Main14 sees client Relay07 at rate 11 and also sees client Remote2C at rate 1.
Relay07 sees client Main14 at rate 54 and also sees client Remote2C at rate -1.
Remote2C sees client Main14 at rate 18, but does not see Relay07 at all.
I don't understand two things here. Why doesn't Remote2C see Relay07 as a client? The relay is much closer to the remote than it is to the main. Second, how are any two units talking to EACH OTHER at different rates? If Main14 is talking to Relay07 at 11, shouldn't Relay07 be talking to Main14 at the same rate? But it isn't; Relay07 is talking to Main14 at 54. This doesn't make sense to me.
The practical reason I'm asking this, beyond simply trying to understand how the WDS works, is that my wireless connection in the outbuilding is very erratic. One moment I've got a full strength connection, the next I'm utterly disconnected. So I'm guessing that something isn't quite right here. But I don't know what, and I don't really understand how the system is working, so troubleshooting is a bit of a challenge.
    Thanks for any help!
    -brian

    Hi Brian,
I'm having exactly the same problem, with the slight difference that I'm living in a flat and that the distance between WDS main and WDS relay is 4 meters (with direct line of sight) and the distance between WDS relay and WDS remote is 5 meters... My flat is built around an 'L' shaped corridor with main, relay and remote being each at one point of the 'L'.
Tried also to scan for used channels and took one of the free ones.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Buebeli

  • To anyone who has had the trackpad problem and had it replaced...

So if anyone has had the trackpad problem where it doesn't click or erratically doesn't move the cursor, and HAS gone to the apple store and had it fixed, does your new one work properly now?
I have an appointment this evening to have it looked at (and probably replaced) but if this is a consistent problem with all models, its not going to fix it. I am wondering if I should wait until Apple catches on to this, and does something about it.
    Anyone have any success stories?

My suggestion would be to KEEP your MacBook. There are several other discussions with the same issue.
It seems as though this issue is widespread.
Why copy data, wipe the old one clean, trade out for a new MacBook, transfer all the data BACK .... only to find your issue unresolved?
It's not worth the hassle. My guess? Apple will issue a firmware update for the trackpad issue.

  • My iPad 3 is not charging on my macbook pro mid-2012. It was working yesterday and it is not working now, and I'm trying to transfer files between them. How do I charge my iPad with my macbook without having to be a completely new computer?

I am trying to transfer files between my ipad 3 and my macbook pro mid-2012 and they will just not connect. I connected them yesterday and it worked fine. And i can not air drop these files into my ipad it has to be done through itunes. And i can not afford to buy a new computer. How do i get these two to connect without having to buy a completely new computer?

Computer USB ports, regardless of the computer maker, have a relatively low power output and thus are not good chargers. They will charge but it takes a long time. You should be charging your iPad from wall power, or a more powerful source like an in-car charger.
Buying another computer will not change that.

  • I am switching from a pc to mac and want to know how I go about transferring files from one to the other.  There is a chance that I will have to hand my pc back before I receive my MacBook so I will need to transfer on to some sort of external hard drive.

I am switching from an acer laptop to a MacBook Pro.  I may have to hand in my laptop before I receive my new MacBook. What is the best way to back up my files so that I can transfer them to my MacBook.  I cloud cannot be installed on my laptop because it uses a version of windows that is older and doesn't support it.  Hope someone can help.

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the  PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it.
