PC went to sleep 3 hours into a migration assistant transfer to MBA.

Is there any way to recover?  The situation was complicated by the fact that while the screen was dark on the PC, I must have inadvertently hit the close box.  I turned off the sleep function on the PC (too bad the migration assistant didn't remind me, although it did tell me to turn off software update).
The migration assistant on the MBA remained on the whole time.  When I restated MA on the PC, I was hoping it would resynch and continue on.  It did not.
If I restart it on the Mac, will I get a bunch a duplicate files or will it know where to pick up?  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

the system should have gone to sleep only after the migration was finished.
compare folder sizes / folder to verify everything is there.
to be on the safe side or if you spot data missing, I'd just start over from scratch.

  • "21 hours remaining": Is Migration Assistant meant to be this slow?

I'm trying to migrate from one Lion machine (upgraded from Snow Leopard) to another new Mac Book Pro. 140 G total. It says it will take 21 hours? Is that normal? And when the system looks like it is sleeping, is it?

Wifi. But I dumped the Wifi, SuperDuper!-ed the old Mac to a drive, then am now migrating from the drive. Says it will take 2 hours.
I was surprised the Migration Assistant didn't determine that the machine was set to allow it to sleep. Should at least be a warning about that.

  • Migration Assistant transfer hangs up

In the week since I received my new iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.7, I have been reading archived threads here about my options to transfer data (including applications) from my old G4 running Panther 10.3.9. Although I read mixed opinions about it, I decided to try Migration Assistant (MA). The iMac got set up perfectly, all of its original software got updated, and I installed Rosetta in order to recognize and run PowerPC applications migrated from the G4. I checked the G4 with Disk Utility (from its original install CD) and it reported no problems. I repaired permissions as well.
Both computers were on an Ethernet LAN, but when I proceeded with MA and chose wired network, it told me to start MA on the old computer. As the G4 did not have MA (introduced in Tiger 10.4), I could not use this method. (I saw that problem here in an archived thread, so I foresaw it as possible for me too.) So I used a FireWire connection via Target Disk Mode (TDM). Rebooting the G4 into TDM worked fine, and MA saw it. I chose most of my main G4 User account to migrate, deselecting a few insignificant items (such as time zone) but transferring Applications and essentially all other files. MS counted about 45 GB.
The migration appeared to start OK, estimating it would take 11-12 hours. Since it started last inght, I let it run overnight. After about 11 hours, it was approx. 40% complete (by progress bar) but said it had 10 h 15 min to go. After about 13 hours total, it said it had 11 h 17 min to go, with no significant change in the progress bar. I checked the Console, and it had 4000 messages (which may be a limit, as older ones disappeared after a few minutes to stay at 4000-4001) reporting every few seconds an error related to com.apple.storeagent. Those had started at least by 4:50 AM. They included the phrase "Job appears to have crashed: Trace/BP trap" and a phrase related to trying to restart. (Unfortunately, I had to leave for work and cannot report more details at the moment, though I can later.) All messages appeared to relate to com.apple.storeagent.
Is MA really hung up, or could it be stuck on one file or category of files that takes much longer than others? The Console messages did not look good to me. Is there anything I can do on the iMac, particularly related to storeagent, than I can do to resume migrating? If I cannot, can I just quit MA (there is no Cancel button) and about 40% will be migrated successfully? If I can fix the storeagent problem, could I probably restart MA? I think I cannot do one User's migration in parts, can I? (Meaning perhaps to choose Applications and certain settings first and then run it again for other files?) I think not, because the old User will have been migrated on the first run, and MA will not repeat it with that User exisiting on the new iMac. I could, however, rename my User on the second run to get the other files. Is there any advantage to that if MA hung up on a particular item in some category?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I am not in a big hurry, as I have another iBook and a Windows PC, but I would like the migration of my G4 files to be achieved as successfully as possible.

I have been gradually transferring content from the old G4 PowerMac to the migrated User account on the new i7 iMac. That has mostly been done via Ethernet LAN (which is fast enough and much faster than attempts to migrate via FireWire). I discretely copied over certain Library folders that were not already in place on the iMac. I have run installers again whenever they were available. The new account seems to be working fine. (There is a deficiency with AOL Desktop for Mac being unable to read individual files that are in AOL Mail format, as saved by the predecessor AOL for Mac OS X, of which I have thousands saved over the last 21 years, but I am dealing with AOL to try to resolve that.)
However, I have continued to have problems with a FireWire connection between the two computers, which I have resumed diagnosing this weekend after receiving a new FireWire cable. I tried to make a Disc Image of the G4 using its own Disk Utility (10.4.4) to save to an external USB HD, but it always gave the error "Device busy." When I mounted it on the iMac via Target Disk Mode, Disk Utility on the iMac was never able to finish making a Disc Image, terminating with an error after several hours of trying. Verifying the G4 via TDM using the iMac's Disk Utility said that it had problems (after the G4's own Disk Utility repeatedly said it did not), and then attempting to Repair those problems led to its saying the G4 drive could not be repaired. I booted the G4 into its original installer disc and ran Disk Utility to repair any problems the iMac's connection may have caused, and it was fine.
Problems have been occurring using either of the two FireWire ports on the G4, any of three different 400/400 FireWire cables with a new 400/800 adapter as well as with a new 400/800 cable. An external LaCie "Super Writemaster" CD/DVD drive was able to write a music CD connected to the iMac via FireWire, but it was repeatedly unable to write 4.25 GB of files to a DVD-R disc. The errors were to the effect of "a file was modified while being copied." Through a USB connection to the iMac, the LaCie copied the same files to a DVD fine. The LaCie then copied 4.33 GB from the G4 via FireWire just fine.
I am coming to suspect that the problem is the FireWire connection (port or controller?) on the new iMac. Is it possible for a FireWire connection to "mostly work" (enough to copy hundreds of MB of files but not GB) but fail during larger transfers? Every disk I have connected has mounted (so the symptom is different from that of other people who have posted problems related to iMacs' FireWire, who could not mount disks), but large transfers have always failed. I have also reset the System Management Controller.
I know this has digressed into a different topic from Migration Assistant hanging up, but your guess along the way might be correct as to the physical problem: "There's clearly something wrong with the old Mac, a Firewire port, or cable, or something"...except that it may be on the new iMac. Should I post a new question about this problem? I would like to diagnose the iMac's FireWire port. Apple's Hardware Test claims there are no problems, but I do not know if it could detect one like this. I have made an appointment at an Apple store next Saturday (while the iMac is still under warranty), but the nearest one is over two hours away and I am dubious that they will be able to determine a specific cause. I may end up keeping a new iMac without a reliable FireWire port. It is problems like this that make me dread buying new computers. I have had this iMac almost a month and cannot give up my G4 yet in case the iMac needs repair that takes it away for two weeks between visits.

  • Missing hard drive space after failed migration assistant transfer

When I first got my 13" macbook pro (about a month ago), I attempted to use Migration Assistant to move my files from my old 15" MBP. After starting the transfer, my old MBP locked up (or so I thought) & I had to quit the process. When I looked to see if anything transfered to the 13", I couldn't find anything, but there was hard drive space, maybe about 15 GB, missing. I looked everywhere I knew to look, in all folders all over my computer but came up emptyhanded. Although I've been using macs for years, I have little knowledge of all the inner workings/hidden files, etc. so I've reached the end of my abilities. I've searched all over & have been unable to find an answer. I had originally decided to just let it go & deal with a few missing gigabytes, but I just have to know what's going on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Problem solved! Ran Disk Utility not in recover mode again, and it identified that the logical size wasn't right. Repair Disk while logged in - and at the upper level "Macintosh HD" on the left sidebar - fixed the issue, and I'm going to not attempt to run Boot Camp again for a while just in case :-p

  • HT2518 migration assistant (transfer files from windows PC to Mac)

  • Migration Assistant--Transfer an individual application only?

I have two computers--one a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and another a MacBook Air running 10.7.
I have Adobe CS3 on the MacPro and wanted to transfer it to the MacAir.
However, the Mac Air is already set up and I have already used Migration Assistant to set it up, but did not transfer the Applications.
So now I want to transfer only Adobe CS3 to the Mac Air, but no other files.
This is because the MacAir will not let me install CS3 because it is a PPC app
My workaround idea is to try to transfer it through Migration Assistant without transferring my entire Application folder
Any way I can do that?
Many thanks in advance for your help

Not sure about that, seems to want to work for Photoshop CS3, but I don't want to re-install it to prove the point:
It also looks like that it can be installed by just dragging the Photoshop folder to the Applications folder:

  • HT4796 How long does the migration assistant transfer usually take?

This transfer seems to be taking a really long time and no real change in status. How long does it usually take?

I originally tried to migrate from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac via wifi. 30 hours, and it never finished. Tried again, same result. 3 days later, and never finished the transfer,  I connected the two via ethernet. Less than 4 hours to transer files (had a lot of high quality pix), but now up and running with no problems ... although I now have two main users. Read somewhere that there's a way to fix that. Don't EVER go wifi for Migration. Especially if you have others in your household using wifi, or a lot of high MB files. Or even if you've put you phone on wifi.
Oh yeah: don't forget to set your drive auto shut down to "never." That info isn't provided. Crucial for both devices. If either computer sleeps (the drive, not the screen), migration stops and doesn't warn as to "why" your migration isn't progressing, and you have to start all over. Be sure to go back and adjust the computer shut dowm to "never." System Preferences," "Energy Saver."
I am Mac, through and through. Just wish they'd offer more "how to" upfront versus me searching online or making an appointment to see some Genius, or waiting on hold for Apple assistance, to solve problems which I believe many face.
3 days later, migration complete. Finally. Seriously, Ethernet is the only way to go when you move from one Mac to another.
Been there, done that. Wish that Apple would suggest Ethernet as the way to Migrate. Have as of yet to see a successful migration via wifi; and I have looked, Googled, searched the topic. Apple should suggest Ethernet as the best way to migrate. Period.

  • Migration Assistant & Assimilating/Merging Old & new accounts

    Hi,
I took a leap of faith by purchasing my latest new Mac, choosing the new Intel iMac and not a PPC. A huge leap in technology- G3 iBook 466SE Calmshell to a iMac 2.0 ICD 20" loaded w/2GB ram, 500GB Hard Drive, and worth the extra $75; 256MB of video ram. I totally dig the new iMac with the exception of a few minor quirks which I'll post them somewhere else in the discussions here.
Now on to my question at hand. When I 1st unpacked the new system I didn't use the Migration Assistant right away as I suppose I was excited and so were all of my friends and coworkers so I created a user account for my friends to play with at work for a day and for my other friends when we all got together one weekend to check it out. BTW Photo Booth and Comic Life rocks when showing it off! Anyway, I made a new account for myself and one for everyone else to use/play with. After several days went by, I decided to use Migration Assistant to move all my files from the iBook to the iMac. It took almost 3 hours! I suppose the length of time was consumed by Spotlight indexing the new data almost 40GB. My not so serious delima is that now I want to assimilate or merge all of the accounts into one. Not much to even worry about on the account I created for my friends to use, just a few Photo Booth pics and a Comic Life which I'm not worried about as I've made copies and emailed them out already. I want to merge my new account with my old one from my iBook without the loss of most of my email iTunes, music and new Safari bookmarks etc. Is there an easy way to do this or am I just unaware that this is almost a "no brainer"?
Thanks for any help, tips or suggestions.

Move the files you want to keep from one account into the /Users/Shared/ folder while logged in to that account, and then log in from the other account and drag those files to your current home folder. Once you've moved everything you want out of an account's home folder, use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete that account.

  • Problems w/ Migration Assistant

I just got my new MacBook Pro in the mail and foolishly launched into it without doing much reading up... I used Migration Assistant to move everything from my Powerbook G4 over to my new MacBook Pro. The transfer got to the "about 2 minutes" remaining point and then more or less froze. After about a half an hour I unplugged the firewire cable and the computer sprang back to life (after a warning about disconnecting a drive), and asked me to set up a user account etc.
Now I have 2 admin user accounts on my computer, the one from my old Powerbook and the one that the setup assistant had me create. My other problem is that I had Migration Assistant transfer all of my programs, including ones that don't run on my new intel computer and others that I don't really need any more.
My question is; 1) can I delete one of the user accounts and then delete the individual programs one by one, or 2) Since it is a new computer and all of the stuff on it is also on my old computer can I just some how wipe out the hardrive on the new computer and transfer the stuff again, this time being ore judicious about what I transfer?
    Thanks...

    Hi jvancil,
Sorry to hear about your problem.
You can use either option (i.e. deleting the second account or erasing the drive and re-installing OS X, then using Setup Assistant/Migration Manager again).

  • Cannot download account in Migration Assistant as person is a File Vault User!

I just received my iMac back from the Apple Store with everything brought back to scratch and the operating system (Mountain Lion) reinstalled. I was trying to re-install two accounts which belong to my wife and I. Everything went well for mine but the one which belongs to my wife didn't appear. It was only when I went back into the Migration Assistant that it showed all the boxes ticked except for my wife's which was hidden the first time around and it said it couldn't migrate hers because she is a File Vault User.
I am no expert and if I set her up as a File Vault User it was in error. I would be very grateful if someone could spell out in detail, step by step how I can migrate her information unless it is lost forever!
    Many thanks

The easiest way by far to handle this would be to do a full-sytem restore.

  • Migrate assistance / Mail application Problems

    Hello,
I bought a new Macbook Pro Lion, after I powered the mac, went to utilities app to use migrate assistant app to install my time capsule back up.
Because I used the same name of the home folder whenI first booted the mac, it asked me to open a new user (standard user) in order to transfer from the time capsule back up to replace the admin user.
I did so, everything went fine, until I opened my first admin user and apparently the name has changed, and now in the users folder I can see 2 home folders one xyz and the other xyz1, so it is kind of confusing. the xyz has most of the folders but empty, as the xyz1 has everything but the application folder emply.
I opened most of my applications to check if the info were transfered successfully, from iphoto to itunes, etc.. mostly everything apparently was fine, but not MAIL, I open the mail, it took most the accounts but it does not show the main window for mail, and if it is open it does not allow me to quit the app, so I had to forcequit couple of time, and still when ever I try to open it, it doesn't work.
Now I m thinking about restoring my Macbook Pro to the factory setting, and start fresh, but I don't know from where and how to do that, can you please help me.
    Thanks

Setup Assistant is usually recommended instead of Migration Assistant:

  • Migration Assistant won't do verification

I have read the migration assistant tips and tricks, and questions on this matter and I cannot find an answer, please help.
This is my first apple computer (MBP Retina) and I want to migrate email, calendar etc from my Windows 7 desktop PC.
I installed Windows Migration Assistant (WMA) on the PC.
I connected an ethernet cable directly from the PC ethernet port to the MBP thunderbolt port.
I started the migration assistant software on both computers. On the MBP I select 'Migrate from PC to Mac'.
The MBP recognises the PC by name, so I click on the displayed name and 'Continue'.
The MBP throws up a 6-digit verification number and tells me to verify it on the PC.
BUT.... the PC WMA software never displays the verification number. I can wait for hours. The migration assistant will not proceed without the verification number appearing on the PC.
I have restarted both computers and the same thing happens.
    Please help me.
If there is no solution, what is the 'unassisted' way to migrate from PC (Office 2010) to Mac?

That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

  • How to migrate Address book and Stickies without using Migration Assistant

Can anyone direct me on how I can copy over my address book and all of my stickies from one OSx HDD to a new HDD?
I noticed when I went into the Migration Assistant, that some of the options were greyed out such as "Other Data" in my profile and seemed to be pretty huge. So I don't want to use the Migration Assistant because I did a clean install on this machine and I am worried about migrating garbage from my old installation.
    Thanks.

    Hi
With Address Book you can simply open the application, go to File/Export/Address Book Archive, and save. To import on the target Mac/Installation go to File/Import/Address Book Archive.
If the system has become a non bootable system but you can mount the drive then simply go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/Application Support/ and copy the Address Book folder to the same location on the target Mac/Installation.
For Stickies data simple go to the relevant users home folder ~/Library/ and copy the file entitled StickiesDatabase to the same location on the target Mac/Installation.

  • Possible solution to Migration Assistant "Looking for other computers"

Like many I ran into the Migration Assistant problem of not recognizing an attached drive.  I found one solution which worked for me.  Obviously, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to work for others but I thought I would post it in case it is useful to someone.
The problem:  My MBP 2012's internal HD was getting old and slow.  Time to switch to an SSD internal.  I purchased a Crucial 512 GB, placed it in an external enclosure and formatted it with Disk Utility.  Then I removed the internal HD, replaced it with the SSD and put the old HD in an external enclosure.  I attached it with a USB 3 cable.
I restarted the MBP and got to the Restore screen and chose to transfer all data from another disk.  It then opened Migration Assistant.  When I selected the option to transfer from another drive it went into the dreaded spinning ball hopelessly "Looking for other drives".  When going back to Disk Utility, it showed me that the external was properly mounted and visible so that was not the problem.  It appears from what I read on other posts that when Migration Assistant starts, it somehow unmounts external drives, possibly by logging out of whichever account was used last.
The solution I stumbled upon is this.
    - Restart holding command R (I think) so you get the screen w 4 options: Backup from TM, disk utility, re install OS X and a fourth one
    - Select OSX install. It will install a new system through Wifi.  It only took about 5-10 minutes.
    - Then after it finishes the system installation, it will automatically go into Migration Assistant. Select Backup from other drive and this time it will recognize the external and allow you to copy all files and settings from it.
    Hope this helps someone.

One other caveat, which I learned in my search...  Apparently if you are restoring via Migration Assistant, you can't restore to a user account that you are currently on, and you can't restore to a user account with the same name as the one you are restoring, without replacing the former.
Yes, other than using Setup Assistant when your Mac first starts up, that's the only workaround.
See option #4 in Problems after using Migration Assistant
And unbelievable that this would be the way Apple intended the process to go.  I still am not sure how I could have gotten this to work from the start within Setup Assistant, which obviously you're supposed to be able to do,
That's not how it's supposed to work.  Setup Assistant should have found the sparsebundle and shown it in the Select the Source window.   Usually it does.
It's possible the backups were slightly damaged.  It's also possible clicking Continue on that window might have, uh, kick-started it, as it did for a couple of other folks.
I agree that Setup Assistant "should" have found it, but it didn't...  That was what my last sentence was referring to as well.
For what it's worth, I had tried clicking on the grayed-out continue button like people here suggested.  For me at least, it acted like every other grayed-out button has, and did not respond.
You may be right that my backup .sparsebundle was damaged or something, but I'm not really sure why that would be or how one might know, or even what to do about it if you did suspect that to be the case.  (It checks out on Disk Utility, and Finder has no problem with it.  Heck, even Time Machine recognizes it as an "Other Disk" backup and lets me browse it.  I just couldn't get the Setup & Migration Assistants to recognize it.)
I figured now that I got it to work I'd document my experience here for the benefit of the next poor guy who has to spend his Christmas eve Googling for this thread...
